Arrimus spoke extensively about subd workflow and few others, but I'm pleased that you brought it up. It's a small tip, but useful. Also, I'm really glad that you always find a way to show some small tips that people can use in certain situations, like vertex alignment and further cleaning of ngons with the limited dissolve option. As someone who has been teaching for almost 20 years, in my opinion, a short video form where you'll go straight to the point of the problem is the best approach. In comparison with the few so-called professionals here who are talking so much and actually show very little, you and Ryuurui really pop up. Keep up with the good work, guys. 😃

Subd really has it's place for specific shapes, great thing to have in the tool bag. Thanks!

@ddontyyI was about to say this, I have 500 hours in sub-d modelling and about 3 with Boolean as I’ve only just started using it to save time etc.
Blows my mind the default approach to modelling is Boolean, it reminds me of people using frequency separation in retouching, a very powerful tool that has a use case but people use it to skip massive chunks of the fundamentals.
It should be taught the other way around, sub-d first then Boolean to save time etc.

He has a point about not caring in terms of efficiency, but why would you want non-perfect topology in your portfolio? If you have triangles, it's not that difficult to quad them out, and it's going to make your topology look much cleaner. You can also bring that cylinder down to 8 and use grid fill. Great video tho man - love sub-d modelling

Nice video Josh, thanks for sharing!
I’ve no doubt you know this already so it’s more just putting it out there for another take.
Regarding the loop cuts, it would also be possible to go to orthographic front view (so the long section is pointing at you) and knife tooled from the left to the right and it would have cut perfect loops around the long section in seconds.

I'm starting to realize more and more that the workflow you're promoting looks a lot like what we achieve by doing solid modeling instead of surface modeling. I prefer to work in CAD software and the topology looks very similar. We work with STEP exported files and before exporting, everything is parametric.
Now I've seen that there are a few groups working on bringing a CAD-based workflow to Blender. Do you think that will be a game changer for these type of designs in Blender? I get the feeling that it will produce a lot cleaner meshes in the end.

I would really appreciate it if you did a video about mesh blending theory in general because there are ways that don't work in cases and some do and sometimes it confuses me and I am sure it confuses others too so it would be a great help

this video really isn't great if you want to understand topology. try Ian McGlasham's videos-I learned more from him than pretty much anyone else on YT

    Very interesting,
I learned hard surface modeling from you back in 2020, but I wanted to ask something. I picked up plasticity and I've been using blender for almost 5 years. I know at the end you mentioned you don't like CAD but is there an advantage using this method over plasticity? I enjoy using both software but for me I feel something like this would be much easier in plasticity.

Due respect, sir, after all these years of following you, your channel is still not the one I consult when I need topology advice. I think you ventured so far into boolean land you lost the ability to think in clean topology. Some of the solutions you suggest here are not quite rock solid to say the least. Also, the 'I don't care' attitude. For me, the foundation is the MILG11 approach, that's what I consider perfect subdiv - tho it was done in C4D, the general approach is software agnostic and transfers perfectly to blender. I can only recommend to everyone interested in a professional subdiv hard surface workflow. I'll still watch some of your quick boolean tips though, there's some valid use case to it. Don't take it as an offense.

Don't waste your time with these guys. They give you terrible advice to sell their addons. If you do pay for their stuff they spam you with emails multiple times a day. If you unsubscribe from their emails they will delete your paid account.
