    I have 2 bulbs that I have been using for 12 years in an open lamp. They were to last only 8 years. It was expensive in 2008 but they are still working.

    I work at a lighting company, and i always tell my customer that the big stores (walmart,target,homedepot) get their led bulbs cheap due to poor components.

    With regards to heat dissipation of an LED bulb, installing them in enclosed fixtures will also greatly affect lamp life due to overheating electronic components of bulb. If you plan on using an LED screw-in bulb in an enclosed light fixture, you need to look for a bulb rated for use in enclosed fixtures, which should be noted on packaging and/or on bulb. These bulbs have more robust electronic components that can take the additional heat within the fixture. As for dimmability, not all LED bulbs are dimmable, and that aspect of bulb will be noted on bulb packaging. If you are going to use an LED bulb on a dimmer, make sure the dimmer is compatible with LED bulbs in addition to incandescent bulbs. Dollar Tree sells a 60-watt equivalent LED bulb that is rated for use in enclosed fixtures, but not dimmable (products most likely vary by store location). Make sure you read bulb packaging before making a purchase so you don’t end up buying the wrong bulb which will result in a short life.

    Sad thing is the incandescent would last forever so they had to design the filament to burn out within a specific amount of use for profit.

      It's a balance between efficiency and life. The hotter the filament is the more light it gives off, but it also melts away. A red hot spiral in an electric stovetop or a toaster can not burn out for a long time even in air. The "hundred year bulb" is also undervolted and too dim to be of any use. There are halogen bulbs that are estimated to last 2000 hours because they only burn at 2700 degrees.

      @j7ndominica051 is very right. In the 80's some company made incandescent 60W bulbs that lasted MUCH longer than other bulbs at the time. But they were about as bright as a 40W bulb.

      No, the don’t “last forever” in practical terms, they get dimmer and dimmer while consuming more and energy.

    I had replaced an incadescent that lasted for about 15 years in the living room, because we didn't switch on the specific light for more than 1 hour and not everyday, until we bought some arm chairs and then we started switching it on for about 4 hours everyday, and about 2 months later, it died and I replaced it with a CFL. The CFL lasted for about 5 years, and then I replaced it with an led in January. However, in less than a month the led died in a stormy day, after a lightning strike and I replaced it with another led that it's ok for now.

  • @j7ndominica051
    @j7ndominica051 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Basic bulbs last about the same time, but some manufacturers have scaled back the wild claim of 50k hours life and others haven't. If I buy an electrolytic capacitor, it is only specified for 2k hours when driven hard.
    A loose contact does kill them. I had 3 bulbs burn out rapidly until I accidentally heard buzzing inside the switch where the wires were not tight. Lower power bulbs should last longer because they produce less heat overall and contain more individual LEDs inside.

  • @Muonium1
    @Muonium1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Turning LED bulbs on and off frequently is irrelevant to longevity. LEDs can be switched on and off millions of times without affecting their life span. This is an old belief that comes from CFL days when the thermionic emitter coating material on the filaments inside would be sputtered off a little bit on every start up. Switching CFLs on and off frequently will rapidly degrade their life span. The overwhelming majority of failures in LED bulbs is the LEDs being run too hot and failure of the drive electronics.

    The REAL and only reason led bulbs don't last as long as the manufacture say they will is because the manufacturer LIE! Simple and straight. Consumers need help in holding manufacturers accountable to their LIES.

    • @flannelguydiy6458

      I think it also depends upon the conditions. Having a steady flow of power with no surges. Operating at certain temperatures. Not having them on a dimmer. reducing the number of times you turn them on and off, etc

    When they said last year that only LED light bulbs would be sold after Aug 1st, I bought probably a 30 year supply of incandescents (based on having 3-4 burnouts a year) None of the government's business what I use in my house and they can have this green energy nonsense.

    The top round part of the LED lightbulbs don't get hot, but I notice the base does get hot - is that normal? Also, I had a bulb start flickering in a lamp and I immediately turned the switch off and the light stayed on a few seconds, I think it's what they called a ghost light which LEDs will do, but anyway I took the bulb out and now I'm afraid to replace it because I don't know if it's the bulb or the lamp, so I guess my other question is: Do LED bulbs flicker like that when they go out? These are the Walmart brand. Thank you.

    I don't care about conditions. I've been buying my own bulbs for my home for nearly 30 years. I'm the type of person who turns the lights off when not in a room. I don't keep bulbs burning for hours on end. I have a good idea of how often bulbs are on in a particular room at a particular time of day. I don't know specific numbers, but I know that every single LED bulb I've ever purchased has burned out WAY prematurely. Every single time. And the "stop buying cheap bulbs" response is arrogant. I used to buy Sylvania 60w bulbs in a 4 pack from my local Shoprite supermarket on sale on a regular basis for $1.99. That's .50 a bulb. That standard ones, not the double life bulbs. Had them in bedrooms and bathrooms for over 3 years on average before they burned out. Iget 3 years out of a similar type LED that costs 2-4x that amount when the claims on the package state that given the time mine are on, should last at least 6-7 years. And I've tried more "expensive" bulbs too. not that I should have to. Why? Because they're BULBS! They're disposable! They die and they become garbage. But the govt eliminated the ones that were made of metal and glass and mandated that we must now purchase ones made of plastic and semiconductor materials. Of course they cost more! Even at the cheapest levels they're essentially made from computer components. We took what worked well and efficiently, and replaced it with a product that is considerably more expensive and does not work any better than it's predecessor. Now how is that more efficient? Last year my downstairs hall light finally went out. It was 10 years old. I know this because the last time I replaced it was when I painted my home. The hall light goes on when we enter the home, or leave the home. If it's on a total of 5 minutes on any given day, that's a lot. Had a CFL bulb in there. So what do I do? I replace it with an LED bulb. More expensive than what I typically buy, but I did some research and I thought I had purchased what would be a fairly reliable bulb that wouldn't need to be changed for many years. It's a difficult bulb to change. It's 12 feet up from the floor, and I have to borrow a ladder that high to change it. This LED bulb started flickering a few days ago, and burned out today. It lasted a year. I'm livid. And I'm tired of these bulbs. All of them. And there isn't damn thing I can do about it except continue to spend too much money on substandard bulbs. Bullshit.

      So true. When they came out, the producers used parts that cost more ( AC to DC converters, tiny tiney ones in the bulb ) hence the prices where nuts, life was longer. Now they are dealing with the loss of sales to the cheapest sellers. As with all things produced buy any company on the stock exchange, They cut cost to increase profit and maintain sales volume. We now pay multiple times what our old AC bulbs cost. Proponents say, "oh your saving energy", as if LED bulbs make themselves, are some how cleaner to produce and will miraculously save the whole world. Supply and demand can not let that be the case. You will pay 4 times the bulb cost and get the same life as your old AC lamps. Its mandated, but will take time.

    So, in reality, yes. They lied to us about LEDs. This is why a ban is not the way to go. LEDs simply are NOT appropriate for all applications. Take light bulbs in a garage door opener, LEDs may not last a year in that application.

    I wouldn’t mind getting 5 years out of a 10 year bulb, but these don’t last me a year. I use them all over and I’m constantly changing them. So very annoying. And then I have them in my chandelier and three bulb bathroom fixtures. One burns out within one, two years… try finding replacements that match. Have to replace them all! They are turning out to be much less efficient and cost effective than incandescent, which lasted FOREVER! Feel like we’ve been bamboozled!
