  • Learn how to loom knit a colourful DIY patchwork blanket using the garter stitch. Or the Harry Styles sweater!
    You’ll like the sense of gratification each time you complete a square!
    STEPS
    0:00 Intro
    1:09 Cast on first square
    3:24 Garter stitch
    6:56 Bind off to finish square
    9:42 Join squares
    SUPPLIES
    • 6-10 balls of yarn
    • loom (round like 41 peg loom with gauge of 13/16th inch, or a long loom/rake)
    • hook
    • scissors,
    • yarn needle/crochet hook
    • measuring tape/ruler
    INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE SQUARES
    1. Put slipknot on anchor peg. Start casting on at the right side of your loom. Do e-wrap knit stitches all the way to the left. I personally used 15 pegs.
    2. After you knit the 15th peg, wrap that peg once more, then knit over.
    3. Then on 14th peg, do a u-knit stitch and knit over. Do this all the way to the right.
    4. Once you u-knit and knit over the 1st peg, your cast on is done. Remove slipknot now or very soon.
    5. Now purl every peg all the way to the left.
    6. Then do e-wrap knit stitches all the way to the right.
    7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you've made a square.
    My squares with my yarn and my loom and my knitting ended up being 7.5 inches by 7.5 inches (9 cm by 9 cm).
    I ended up doing 17 purl rows and 16 knit rows, but that's me!
    8. Once you have a square, do the basic bind off. Be a bit loose so the edge doesn't tighten up your square too much.
    INSTRUCTIONS TO JOIN SQUARES
    1. Arrange your squares on a table or bed to spread out the colours nicely and to alternate between horizontal squares and vertical squares.
    2. Sew squares together as strips.
    3. Sew strips together to make your blanket.
    4. Weave in all ends.
    Happy Loom Knitting and please subscribe for short and sweet videos with helpful captions.

    I was reading thru the comments and saw where someone asked if you could add another patch to the first one. I did a blanket like this but just in two colors My answer is yes, do not cast off do a slip knot of another color and keep going. I did 5 patches then cast off and start another set of 5 patches.

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anne, I cannot be sure of the results of this suggestion, but I'll put it out there. Your daughter could do simply e-wrap squares. Due to the nature of the stitch, they would curl. But what if you placed half of them with the purl (back) side up? Maybe that would balance things out. Just an idea.

      Absolutely, you can use your rectangular loom for this. Good luck.

  • @joncampos5551
    @joncampos5551 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Because I’m right handed, I like to cast on from right to left and then back to the right. Then, as I progress to the left for the next row I knit and purl each peg at the same time, with the working yarn in my left hand. This enables me to maintain the garter stitch without holding the working yarn in my right hand as I purl. I wish I could remember where I learned this as it saves me time and my work progresses much faster. With that said, I guess I should knit 33 rows, as opposed to 16/17?

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that would be 33 rows for you, as long as that turns out to be a square not a rectangle. Good luck.

    Excellent video, thank you! QUESTION: I'm going to make a Danish flag. The red sections will be 18 inches wide. Can those be made in one piece on a 22 inch (29 pegs) long loom? I'm not sure how pegs translate to inches, but I want to be precise in the measurements and proportions.

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you'll come up short. In this video on my particular loom, I used 15 pegs to get 7.5 inches. If you use 29 pegs, you may get around 14 to 15 inches, by my calculations. The best thing is to do a small swatch and then measure.

  • @DJC74
    @DJC74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So I’ve seen other videos doing garter stitch and they said to not do first and last leg with purl. And yours showed doing purl all the way. Is there a big difference between the two ways?

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question. If you avoid purl stitches on the end pegs, you'll get a smooth edge, and the stitches along the edge will look like the letter V. Many people prefer this look, and find it to be more polished. These squares would be slightly narrower.
      If you do purl stitches on the end pegs, you'll get a bumpy edge. I like this edge as much as I like the smooth edge, especially for blankets. In this pattern, the bumpy edge helped me sew the squares together. Also, these squares are slightly wider.
      So to sum up, both edges are good in their own way.

    Love this but mine are curling up at the end when I bind off . I think I might of knit to tightly . I did 17 purl and 16 knit but it came out like a rectangle . I heard you mention in the video you said make it like a square not a rectangle. Any suggestions please

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the bind off, you can try making your last three stitches quite tight, and that might help. Maybe another knitter out there might know a hack? And about getting rectangles, I recommend either increasing or decreasing your row count to get a square. Hope this helps.

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you have lighter yarn, you can double or triple them up and see how that goes. Try your best to make the squares all the same size, even if it means using fewer or more pegs than usual. Traditionally, the patchwork blankets of older generations were not perfectly harmonious, so I personally feel open-minded about giving it a stash-buster feel. So give your leftover yarn a try.

  • @rebeccaleech4731
    @rebeccaleech4731 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    so when you’re loom knitting, do they have specific looms for different yarn sizes?

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally, yes. If you use a large gauge loom - 3/4" between pegs - you'd use thick yarn, like #5 or #6. If you have finer yarn at home, you could try using two or three strands at once. BTW I did a loom review of these Loops&Threads Knit Quick looms. There are four looms in a pack, with different gauges. So the little loom with little space between pegs needs thin, light yarn.

    I have a question. So I just started making my first square the width is about 4 inches long ( I only did 10 pegs instead of 15. I double up on my yarn since I don't #6 bulky yarn.) So I wanted to ask you about how many square will it take me to be able to make this blanket?.

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't done the math, but here are some thoughts. I did 30 squares (5x6). Since your squares are much smaller, maybe make either 80 squares (8x10) or 99 squares (9x11) or 120 squares (10x12). It would depend on the final size you are looking for.

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds like a very small difference, so I wouldn't overthink it, personally. I had a few lopsided squares myself. Maybe you were knitting a bit tighter at the beginning, and a bit looser at the end. No big deal though.

      I'm not 100% sure how to fix this, but I would try to tighten the knot more on those two squares, and try to stretch your square into the shape you want. On your next squares, try binding off more tightly on the last three pegs. I hope this helps. Maybe someone else who reads your comment will respond as well.

    What makes up a row. If the instructions require 20 rows does that mean to do 20 knit and 20 purls to knit
    or would I consider each to be a row.

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      20 rows would be 10 rows of knit and 10 rows of purl.

    Is there a way when you are working the square, that after you have worked up to the length for your square, you can also work another square connecting to it, with a different color?

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am sure it is technically possible. It would be what we call modular knitting. But I have not tried it myself, at least not on this project.

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, yes, for sure, I'm actually working on a seed stitch patchwork blanket right now. Also, in theory you might be able to do squares only in the knit stitch, and then when you sew them together, you could flip half of them over, so you have a knit stitch square next to a purl stitch square. Maybe try with four squares first to see how that turns out. Good luck.

    So, I made this blanket and it looked awesome but I made a few mistakes so it ended up falling apart unfortunately. The biggest mistake I made was not making my tails long enough. The second was cutting the tails off once I knotted them rather than sewing them in. One thing I did differently was I crocheted the strips with a single stitch which looked pretty cool and then I crocheted the entire rim on the outside. It was so cute when I had it done but those two major errors I did messed up the whole thing darnit!

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      #4 might be a bit holey. Probably two strands would be better. But only you would be able to tell - by making a swatch.

      You could try to block your square to make it more square-like, and maybe your bind off is a bit too tight.

      You can certainly make a patchwork blanket with different types of squares. For example, you could make squares of the same size, but use different stitches like the seed stitch, rib stitch, cables, etc

    What did you do with the tail from the beginning that was slipped knotted on

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, sometimes I used the tail to join another square, and so I would tie yarn to it as needed when I needed more length. And when it wasn't needed for joining/sewing, I would weave it in the square to hide it.

    • @hellomsyarn
      @hellomsyarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, I would suggest that you measure your own width since it will depend on your loom, on your yarn and how tightly you knit. For me personally it was 7.5 inches wide, and if I remember correctly it ended up being 17 purl rows and 16 knit rows. But this may be different for you.
