I do love how they did Hordak here. Usually villains get really angry when their minions (for lack of a better word) fail but instead Hordak sees Catra's potential and rewards her for it
@@Tylendal242 Spoilers. We even see that when he starts to get angry and punish Catra, it's not because of failure, but because she keeps lying to him. He might not like set backs and he is really harsh on himself for his own failures, but in his subordinates he values honesty over exclusively good news
I like how little you see Hordak in the first season; he just breezes in every few episodes as a scary authority figure, makes a pronouncement and leaves. Because that's how the underlings in the army - people like Catra and Scorpia - perceive him. (Presumably Shadow Weaver does know him a bit better.)
Grand Admiral Thrawn and Darth Krayt are two characters from Star Wars I appreciate for doing this. When an officer failed to capture Luke Skywalker in a tractor beam, Thrawn asked him why he failed, and the officer calmly explained everything he did, what went wrong, and how he tried to compensate, but couldn’t. Thrawn promoted him and tasked him with creating a new method to counteract the way in which Skywalker escaped. This had happened before, but the last person to fail in this task had just been incompetent, and blamed everything but himself for his failure. Thrawn executed that one on the spot. He rewarded those he saw potential in. Krayt betrayed his ally, Roan Fel, only to kill his body double instead. His head of intelligence, Darth Maladi, had assured him Fel would be present there, but she’d failed him. He lashed out at her for a brief moment, but then relented, and explained to her all the unfortunate things that they would all have to deal with now as a result of her failure. This wasn’t to berate her, but to make sure she understood, because now she was tasked with cleaning up the aftermath. “You have failed me today, Lady Maladi. Serve me better tomorrow.”
5:29 this is honestly such a huge part of adora's character. Due to shadow weaver's manipulation, she completely believes her worth as a person is deternined by what she can do for other people. She is selfless to a fault. It's one of her biggest problems as a person, but the fact that it's tackled the way it is in the show makes me love adora even more
Spoilers And we see her have to confront that, as well as the person who cares about her most and who she cares about most calling her out on it and desperately trying to get her to think about her own wellbeing.
*Catra:* You know, I'm actually glad you _did_ make it out of there alive, because now I can take you out myself! *Adora:* Catra, we're on a battlefield! This is hardly the time for a date! *Catra:* ... *Catra:* What? *Adora:* What?
From a tactical perspective it's honestly really clever of Catra to always play distraction, because she knows Adora will always focus on her. But from my heart's perspective it's painful seeing them fight. Also credit to Hordak for being a pragmatic overlord. Villains who get rid of their followers for failing are honestly kinda dumb. They're just weakening themselves by lowering their numbers :p
When Catra loses an arm and gets it replaced with horde teck, that slowly starts to corrupt her mind. The emotional turmoil for Adora trying to get her back is heartbreaking.
Yeah but I loved the long conversation with Scorpia about not being able to use hands the same way everyone else can. It really brought them together and showed just how good at supporting people Scorpia can be.
I mean, as always, Entrapta had good intentions for this one, but given what’s revealed about the tech later, it’s kind of a “gone horribly right” moment rather than deliberate malice.
It's classic Netflix. They do this a lot with animated shows: split a season in two so they only have to pay the animators once but advertise them as separate seasons. She-Ra effectively has 4 seasons, with 2-3 being season 2 (according to the original scripts, it was also meant to originally have 2 long seasons, so a lot of shenanigans must have happened behind the scenes)
"I forget her name." Nettossa. She tosses nets. It's in her name. :P I can't wait until you get to the episode that explains how Princess isn't normally hereditary but based on what sign of the Etherian Zodiac they're born under. Also the Etherian Zodiac itself is pretty wild, wait until they start pointing out constellations.
What? No. They have a prison. Well, technically it's a spare room, but it is more than adequate as a holding cell. They removed the cushions...Most of the cushions.
FWIW, the Brightmoon Guard (the closest they have to 'an army' since the earlier Alliance fell) was presumably keeping the Horde infantry out of the castle proper, while She-ra and co were focused on stopping the armored units that were attacking the Runestone from the open river wash. But the show focuses its attention on the protagonists as opposed to the background characters, so we didn't see the grunts fighting. It would have been nice to see a little more of the surrounding fighting, though.
Makes sense. To be fair though the princesses are so far above the average power of an aetherian that it makes sense they are the frontline expeditionary force, while leaving a pair of princesses behind on guard, the veteran lesbian couple. Basically the show is the elite forces of both sides bouncing off each other, because left unchecked either group would decimate normal troops.
That, and the writers probably would have struggled to credibly portray medieval armies doing anything in a fight against sci-fi laser robots and troops other than be massacred. A consequence of She-Ra's tech level being all over the place.
@@annak2597 good point. Arguably most of the princesses are part sci fi tech as well, what with the first ones integrating their tech into everything including their bloodlines and the runestones.
its funny, in this episode hordac actually satisfies catra's need for validation, without really knowing how much she craves that. Contrast that with Shadowweaver who would punish or belittle her no matter what she achieved, or even steal her accomplishment the one time she did something Shadowweaver deemed worthy enough to take credit for, while still denigrating Catra. He was also the first person in power to not dismiss her out of hand. He may have not cared about her, but at least so far treated as fairly as anyone else, a large step up to her position under SW. It's sad when dispassionate leadership is a major step up.
This is honestly one of the best instances of the "power of friendship" trope I've seen. Normally, it feels a bit nonsensical, but I really like how here, Nate's taken the time to explain the actual in-universe mechanics of how it works before it actually happens. The Princesses are connected to the Runestones; the Runestones, as Entrapta told us, are connected to each other via a vast underground network of First Ones tech. So, when the Princesses align for a common goal, their runestones likewise align and can tap into their full potential. Except - what we saw here _wasn't_ all the Princesses working together. Scorpia and the Black Garnet are still in direct opposition to the others. Which means _this wasn't even their full power!_ And that's why Brightmoon doesn't have an army. Why spend all the resources training and equipping thousands of soldiers, when just a few Princesses can do just as much damage?
"No...Catra...NOoo...don't do it!" Catra is so well portrayed as a cat personified, you can basically envision her giving you THAT look as she knocks the flower pot off the shelf, staring you dead in the eye as you tell her no.
It becomes interesting to see She-Ra absorb all the powers to give it back to each rune stone individually while dragging Catra to rub her nose in the mess she made after this whole mess. It was very much upset cat moments from Catra
Admittedly, Catra’s feline mannerisms are adorable, the hissing and the hackles on the back of her neck when Adora breaks out the accursed spray bottle…
The Aetherian kingdoms don't really have armies or militaries in general. They rely on the power of their princesses for Kingdom on Kingdom conflict and military type action. They do have guards and militias to deal with things below a princess' purview: Bandits, border skirmishes, etc. Most of Brightmoon's guards and militias are protecting and organizing the refugee camp (the one Adora busted in on in episode 3) as Brightmoon relies on the whispering woods to protect their border. This is a diegetic explanation for a non-diegetic problem, not enough budget to animate large armies
to be fair when one princess can launch razor sharp projectiles from thin air, the average soldier dies, fast, especially if the height of long range weapons is a bow and arrow.

11:24 "Why is it just four of you and a fucking horse?" That with the face you made made me laugh so hard 😂 16:53 Fun fact: When Nate Stevenson was asked what this giant rainbow wave represents his answer was "the gay agenda" :D
Even though they’re never shown, I choose the believe that Adora keeps all the scars she gets throughout this series…Coincidentally most of them being from Catra
Catra being able to hold her own against She-Ra is pretty impressive. As strong as She-Ra is Catra can do damage, back in the Mermista episode a big surprise was Catra gut punching She-Ra and her actually feeling it.
I think the lack of guards or an army from bright moon in this episode is probably a budget thing. Although you could always argue that they don't really have a great organization when it comes to the military aspect, cause they've been fighting the horde for years and they haven't made much progress.
Probably also an age rating thing; if they showed all the soldiers, and they wanted the battle to initially favor Catra and the Horde, they would have had to show some of those soldiers getting hurt. It's totally okay for the Hero Squad to blow up thousands upon thousands of robots, but show one living person get injured, and you're pushing it. Hell, I'm surprised they went as far as Catra slashing up Adora's back; that level of violence is normally never seen in shows geared toward a very young audience.
"Why is it just four of youse and a fucking horse?" Because the Horde is winning, and have been for a long time before She-Ra came into the picture. When Brightmoon loses soldiers, those soldiers are lost. When the Horde loses some robots, they just make more robots.
As for season 2 and 3, they are technically part of the same season, but they were broken up to try to get episodes out faster. As an experiment, it didn't really work, so they didn't repeat it for seasons 4 and 5.
I do also hate that brightmoon doesn’t have an army, especially since Angela never shows use of any of the moon stone’s light based power like Glimmer does. Shoot some lasers, summon some sorcerers from the academy, get some fighters out there! What the fuck?!
So, for the record, no, they don't have an army. Etheria doesn't seem to be a world where large scale battles happened before Hordak showed up and started taking over. Any big threat was swatted down by the resident Princess and they have a handful of guards to deal with minor problems. So not only are they under staffed in the military department but they're also outgunned as Etherians sided more to the side fo magic rather than developping tech so the Horde has things like tanks and cannons while Brightmoon has people with spears and arrows.
@@Katwind I mean, you could theoretically call the bf squad storyline “filler”, but what’s going on In the fright zone definitely isn’t. And both storylines give us a huge punchline to drive things forward
@@kiarya7939 Yes, all that happens is great and/or emotional. Someone's parents are awesome, She Ra gets a dragon apparently, and Catra's parent... is awful. There is a great mirror development between both scenarios, but it doesn't give any tangible closure. Catra's development could even be considered a setup, which is the opposite.
While I hear your frustrations on the lack of an army or guard support, I do appreciate that they rewarded Catra's tactical acumen. She nearly straight-up WON here -- definitely would have if not for the other princesses showing up right in the nick of time, something that Hordak was wise enough to acknowledge. I appreciate shows that let their villains be competent.
There have been plenty of analyses, character studies, even fanfic, regarding how Adora and Catra were screwed over by the Horde in general, and Shadow Weaver in particular. Stevenson went with what she knew; it's most apparent in the final season... which you should see the trailer for, when you reach it. Catra's voice sings the theme song.
I like that in her stress she's actually noticing something wrong with the writing legitimately any Kingdom should have some kind of standing military and it wouldn't even change the story that much it would just make them look more competent to have some guys trying to stop the tanks
To be fair the Horde's army isn't much better... they've got lots of bots and tanks, but I think there's maybe 20 actual soldiers in Hordak's "Army". I mean Kyle is presumably worth keeping despite being about as suitable to the military as pre-super soldier syrum Steve Rogers (only more clumsy). Seriously though, themeaticaly Etheria is extremely pacifistic, I'm pretty sure any of the towns surrounding brightmoon pretty radically outnumber the horde, but the concept of organizing a militia, and training sufficiently to defend themselves is about as alien as creatures from another dimension. Etheria is a giant gay paradise that's status quo is so freaking @ peace with itself the giant beasts that populate it, that (unless messed with) are extremely tame, and only get ornery when protecting something. It's a good thing an actual army doesn't come from space because they'd pretty much take over the world in 3-4 days.
Season One of She-Ra is a bit like Season One of the Owl House, okay for the first 3/4s then amazing for the rest of the show. Just wait until the episode where Adora goes back in time to save the Dragons from an evil wizard, or the episode where she teams up with Hordak's nephew to prevent the Whispering Woods from burning down, or the episode where Catra masquerades as the Queen of the Magicats.
Braking news: Horde soldiers killed by GAY, now over to Scott live on the scene where apparently 12 horde soldiers were killed 3 days ago by a giant wave of gay, and later to night seals
i think it’s funny how adora is repressed and singularly focused on her destiny but her feelings for catra blatantly shows up on the battlefield with the way she always gets distracted by her.
I liked how disappointed Hordak looked when he acknowledged Catra’s effectiveness. He wondered if this timeline would be any different, but he’s come to accept by now that Catra rising to power is ultimately necessary for events to lead Bow to becoming Hordak. Now he just needs to make sure Bow becomes the Prince(ss) of Time *before* the transformation, this time. For that, he needs to keep an eye on Catra, close at hand. It’s a delicate game he’s playing.
I don't believe this is a spoiler, but seasons 2 and 3 of She-Ra are each shorter because they were intended to be one season. I think it was because Netflix wanted to look like the show had more seasons or something. So, when watching, just keep in mind that seasons 2 and 3 are one arc not 2 :)
2:07 honestly, it feels like NBC is a lot harder on reactors than Disney is. They have arguably the most popular and well-respected animated series, even above Disney I'd say. I get that they need to protect the copyrights, but this is fan engagement with their products. It may be small numbers compared to what they're looking for, at least on an individual level, but taken as a whole, that's a lot of people that are interested in your work.
Yes, it was very optomistic to see defensive armies here. But on a realistic sight (bad pun intended), the horse rebellion probably had something to do with it. At least they help against the cyborgs from Entrapta.
If you want to see more of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, there is an online petition on a continuation of the show, if you want a season 6 if you’re interested.

We did see troops near Bright Moon in episode 3 I think it was, but they're presumably elsewhere right now. I don't think Bright Moon has ever needed much in the way of traditional defennses due to the Whispering Woods. The Horde have been attacking the woods, but until now their progress has been slow enough that they were no way close to beimg able to launch a direct attack on Bright Moon, so they've probably assigned most of their troops to places that would normally be vulnerable to attack instead.
Seasons 2 and 3 are basically one season. Netflix did that thing they always do with their animated shows where they cut a season in half and call it two seasons for some reason. So if the “finale” of season 2 seems underwhelming, that’s why.

She-Ra: “We couldn’t animate an army due to budget constraints, as awesome as showing that would have been.”
Catra being able to hold her own against She-Ra is pretty impressive. As strong as She-Ra is Catra can do damage, back in the Mermista episode a big surprise was Catra gut punching She-Ra and her actually feeling it.
17:03 Friendship is Magic Rainbow Wave, ATTACK!!!! XD
And thus ends season 1 of CATRA NO!
16:53 TASTE THE RAINBOW MOTHERFUCKES! p.s shout out to Doug Walker for giving the world that awesome meme.
I think the lack of guards or an army from bright moon in this episode is probably a budget thing. Although you could always argue that they don't really have a great organization when it comes to the military aspect, cause they've been fighting the horde for years and they haven't made much progress.
I thought it was cause they lost so many fighters in the last war
Probably also an age rating thing; if they showed all the soldiers, and they wanted the battle to initially favor Catra and the Horde, they would have had to show some of those soldiers getting hurt. It's totally okay for the Hero Squad to blow up thousands upon thousands of robots, but show one living person get injured, and you're pushing it. Hell, I'm surprised they went as far as Catra slashing up Adora's back; that level of violence is normally never seen in shows geared toward a very young audience.
10:51 See? I told you so. Another Lion King reference
"Why is it just four of youse and a fucking horse?"
Because the Horde is winning, and have been for a long time before She-Ra came into the picture. When Brightmoon loses soldiers, those soldiers are lost. When the Horde loses some robots, they just make more robots.
15:57 True. But they give her some major Toph energy later on, which is something I appreciate.
There weren't a lot of He-man characters the studio had the rights to show but next season we get to see Fisto the sinister fister
6:43 - 6:54 😮…………😁I LOVE THOSE ODDS! I’m excited to be apart of it! Let’s do It!!
As for season 2 and 3, they are technically part of the same season, but they were broken up to try to get episodes out faster. As an experiment, it didn't really work, so they didn't repeat it for seasons 4 and 5.
I like how all these different elements are represented. Perfuma is Earth. Mermista is Water. Frosta is Ice. Spinnerella is Air.
Sea Hawk is Fire.
And Bow is Heart. With their powers combined, they form Captain Planet... I mean She-Ra Rainbow Wave.
Bow is Friendship.
Some say friendship's not an elemental force, but it is the way he does it.
But what about the metal element, also perfuma is obviously wood
@Willow Arkan Netossa is metal maybe?
@@willowarkan2263 She-Ra is metal. Metal sword, metal armor, a material Catra's claws can cut through without effort....
10:20 Come on, Adora, you always said you _liked_ that!
Dipping back to a particularly old meme, "Taste the rainbow, mother f**ker!"
I know you get stressed out at times watching these episodes. But I also love the way you get emotionally invested in various scenes.
GAAAAY WAVE ATTACK.
Bow also glowed :D He's also secretly a princess!
Spoiler; EVERYONE is a princess, even Hordak…
🏹 is not gay, he just have daddy issues. Swift Wind is the original swifty.
Frosta gives me major Toph vibes, and I kind of love it
Waiting for Mosco to break out the water bottle.
"CATRA! NO!"
(spray)
And people say this is the weakest finale, it can't be, it ends with a giant rainbow beam.
The net girl is Netossa.
She tosses nets.
"...okay?"
The rainbow glow the most important thing in the entire show
I do also hate that brightmoon doesn’t have an army, especially since Angela never shows use of any of the moon stone’s light based power like Glimmer does. Shoot some lasers, summon some sorcerers from the academy, get some fighters out there! What the fuck?!
Gonna be a real treat when she finds out Hordak was Catra's real dad all along
Ikr biggest reval their was
Catra...I am your father.
The guards were fighting offscreen because animation budget. Lol
Seasons 2 and 3 are the ones that have fewer episodes. Storyline wise, they’re more like one longer season with a mid-season finale
Wasn´t the end of the second season a filler episode? At least, for a finale, that´s how it felt.
@@Katwind all of which is not filler
16:51: BY THE POWER OF GAYSKULL!
The magicats were a good homage to He-man and his cat. I liked that they slipped that little Easter egg in for fans of the first series.
Braking news: Horde soldiers killed by GAY, now over to Scott live on the scene where apparently 12 horde soldiers were killed 3 days ago by a giant wave of gay, and later to night seals
The rainbow glow foreshadows Bow getting princess powers. 🌈
i think it’s funny how adora is repressed and singularly focused on her destiny but her feelings for catra blatantly shows up on the battlefield with the way she always gets distracted by her.
Yes, seasons 2 & 3 are effectively just one normal length season. Narratively as well, imo.
"Where are your guards?"
On their lunchbreak, they have a union
10:28 that does not look right out of contex
I liked how disappointed Hordak looked when he acknowledged Catra’s effectiveness. He wondered if this timeline would be any different, but he’s come to accept by now that Catra rising to power is ultimately necessary for events to lead Bow to becoming Hordak. Now he just needs to make sure Bow becomes the Prince(ss) of Time *before* the transformation, this time. For that, he needs to keep an eye on Catra, close at hand. It’s a delicate game he’s playing.
"I'm so upset!!"- I couldn't tell ;)
Maaan I hope the Kipo reactions work out, I wanna see that!
NETOSSA! I toss nets!
15:46 That was NOT her gohan moment. That happens later ;)
I loved when She-Ra went Super Saiyan and got even more hair. It's just too bad that her final form is basically Blonde Cousin It.
Go on Gohan, She-Ra go on.😂
Adora: "The power of Gay compels you!"
You could say that Frosta is a wee lass..
Seahawk: ADVENTUUUREEE!
Yes, let the feels flow through you 🥲
Mosco:I am so stressed!!
Me: O.You.Have.Seen. N O T H I N G!!!!!
this is a interesting thumbnail for the video 😳
I loved the "we need a Gohan moment" 😂
Ayyyyy season 1 finished!
16:46 the power of gay, is what's happening!
anyway, time for season 2 fake spoilers:
- bow will go to college and get a degree in agriculture.
- catra will move on from adora and elope with scorpia.
- hordak will turn out to be a nerd and he and entrapta will bond over video games.
- glimmer will become frosta's babysitter on the weekends.
- swiftleaf, the lizard adora accidentally turn magical will return and go to adventures with swiftwind.
- the princess alliance will take a break from the war to play d&d.
We did see troops near Bright Moon in episode 3 I think it was, but they're presumably elsewhere right now. I don't think Bright Moon has ever needed much in the way of traditional defennses due to the Whispering Woods. The Horde have been attacking the woods, but until now their progress has been slow enough that they were no way close to beimg able to launch a direct attack on Bright Moon, so they've probably assigned most of their troops to places that would normally be vulnerable to attack instead.
i knew you'd be going "catra NO!" many more times LOL
catradora are like the sapphic narusasu
~~~The meaning is in the journey!~~~
You are correct! Season 2 and 3 are very short and belong together. It's best to treat them as one season imo :)
Seasons 2 and 3 are basically one season. Netflix did that thing they always do with their animated shows where they cut a season in half and call it two seasons for some reason. So if the “finale” of season 2 seems underwhelming, that’s why.
Mosco yelling at the queen over not deploying her soldiers same as I did first time.
Also I just noticed N there being a cinnamon roll.
there isnt an army. thats kinda the point. this world hasnt had a war in a long time and then the horde showed up out of nowhere
