Bill was a veteran with PTSD who struggled to find his place in society when he finished service. He fell in with a gang that moved around constantly and used guerilla warfare tactics which probably made him feel some sort of normal, eventually seeing this gang as his family. Towards the end, Bill went with the guys that didn’t make him feel worthless and alone.

Ah, Bill was a lost soul, who just needed an occasional gesture that one cares about him and appreciated him to make him happy and give him something to hold on to or, so to speak, to provide him with an anchor to keep him grounded in life. If that had been granted to him continuously by the "good" guys in the gang, he would not have felt disoriented and hopeless, and drifted into unfettered brutality and lashed out against the world the way he did in between the games and in RDR1.

It's small details like this that make me love this game so much. I never understood why they thought he was dumb when he was a savage when I was younger. But when you see him in the 2nd game, it's like "yeah, how tf was New Austin so scared of him?" then you realize time has passed since the end of the 2nd game. Bill being a heavy alcoholic, probably screwed himself psychologically big time, and it helps explain his beginning lines in the 1st, "No more Dutch, and no more you." After all, he wasn't so sure who to side with as he definitely had some respect for Arthur, but Dutch being his daddy, he sided with Dutch. And then probably realized how crazy Dutch had gone, and left while in mental pain all about it. The dude really lost it man. Sad to see a goofy character just flip like that. Damn

John was very angry about being left to die by his family. But that was Dutch, Micah and Javier. Bill was already on the train, so it was no more his fault than Arthur. So while he could kinda justify going after Dutch and Javier. Bill never actually betrayed John even though their friendship deteriorated significantly. Its why he tried talking with Bill to find a way out of their legal problems together- while he didn't try that at all with Javier and Dutch.

Out of Bill, Javier and Dutch, I would agree Bill would be the only one who could be convinced. Javier and Dutch are revolutionaries to the core, whether truthfully like Javier or just as a means to boost their ego like Dutch. Dutch said before he jumped he couldn't fight his own nature. Bill on the other hand was just angry at everything, he could've probably been talked down, though he would've been executed anyway.

The interaction feels like they put up with each other, like a mature married couple. But a time has passed since the RDR2. But in general the voice acting is way better in the sequel, even if it is the same actors. This conversation feels scripted to the point of awkwardness. If Abigail broke John's balls in RDR2, he would flip out at her - in this he is like 'yeah whatever you say woman'. The chemistry they have in RDR2 is way better than RDR1 in general and that's because you know who they are by the time you play the sequel.

I feel like Bill threatening to castrate Kieran was a reference or nod to what Bill would do to that town in red dead 1, where the barn had a naked castrated man hanging
Two things that this made me think, first being it's a clever foreshadowing of who Bill would later become, the second being it's a scary thing to think about. Bill was a killer like the rest in rdr2 but never seemed the sadistic and murderous type who enjoyed it. I wonder if everything that happened finally broke him to doing those things or if like Dutch, he was hiding the worst parts of himself and after the gang split he had no reason to hold back anymore
I actually find Bill likeable in rdr2, except for his casual racism of course
Bill seemed more stupid and prone to anger in rdr2 but still very loyal and seemed the kinda guy who you knew you could depend on for help when things got bad

  • @zoroasper9759

Unfortunately this is really the kind of conversation where it really shows the limitation of Arthur not existing in the lore when this game was made; I know all about how they are supposed to move on and forget but this exact memory is tied to Arthur now. John wasn't the first to see that things were going south or at least if he was the first he wasn't really the first one to act on it. Leaving the gang for a while wasn't because they were no longer a family at that point.
I just cannot see how this conversation can take place without mentioning how it was Arthur that tried to save as many people in the gang as possible during Dutch's downfall.
Obviously I'm not really complaining, there's simply no way to add Arthur retroactively, but it kind of feels weird when you see stuff like this in the first game now

I doubt Bonnie would do that.
And I doubt Abigail would ever do that for another man other than John.
Also I suppose bonnie was eager for adventure and shooting because she grew up on a ranch, comparatively dull life.
Abigail has led a much worse life already and been on the run with Dutch's gang for years, she's seen the proverbial war.
She's had enough of death and crime and the dangers it brings because she's lived it already.

@@LuvEvoI I agree, when RDR1 was written, Arthur hadn't been thought of yet. But we can recontextualise that comment about John knowing "first" to mean that John knew before Bill and the others, and they hated him (and Arthur) for it because they didn't want to believe it, and when they did realise, they felt duped.

Someone already mentioned the PTSD and gay hate, but it's more than that. His own gang treated him like shit. Hosea and Arthur laugh at him to his face about being a "sheep in wolf clothing" and even Dutch calls him out for having "a tiny little mind" when they're going after Bronte. They aren't wrong, but when his own family beats up on him (pretty much nonstop) of course he's going to build resentment.

Which really paints him in a tragic light. If mental health was an issue that was addressed back then would Bill ha e became a violent alcoholic, or would he still have been "Marion"

Back in 2010 I really hated Abigail.
But through rdr2 I learned that Abigail would never give up on John even when he gave up on her and their kid, she never let go of John and gladly accepted him back after he abandoned her for a year.
Unlike bonnie who still naively thinks such a life is an "exciting" life.
