They are used to increase population cap, they are also -used to detect stealth units- and they can also create that "blight" on the ground, also called "creep" which enables the player to build zerg structures. He's just using these units to block the other player's view. They are cheap to build and you can make 4 or 5 at once, even more. Someone correct me if i'm wrong, haven't played in ages. Edit: oh yes, i think they can also carry zerg units.

No passagers at the front first and the ones with some in the middle of the formation. Absolute troll tactic with low success rate, but my god was it hysterical to have the other guy panic and fuck up his micro. All of those good times thanks to this video's inspiration. < 3
