PS5 Pro Upscaling PS4 Games Tested: Classics, PS VR1, Broken Games, & More
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 ก.พ. 2025
- One feature Sony confirmed for PlayStation 5 Pro was the option to enhance the image quality and resolution of select PS4 games. An updated boost mode setting that in theory, might be able to clean up a lot of those unpatched 1080p PS4 games. And now that the console is finally here, it's time to put this feature to the test. What are the limitations? Do PS VR1 games work with it? How about the new classic emulated PS1, PS2, and PSP games? Does anything get broken with this feature on? All valid questions. And we can even answer them too! Pretty wild stuff. But hey, we gotta keep it professional now. We're not amateurs anymore.

Fun fact: FF15 on high mode has an infamous 1800p permanent judder that is seemingly fixed on the ps5 pro. The base ps5 couldn't fix the judder.
I actually noticed this. I had booted up FFXV back when I got my PS5 and it just didn't run very good. I just re-downloaded the game on my PS5 Pro last night and enjoyed a few minutes of the game and looking forward to playing it to completion after I finish up Dead Island 2.
Is High mode still 30fps on PS5 PRO? If so then sticking to the Lite mode.
@JeffreySmiles_ it's still just 30 fps tho right?
@@dragonsoul30 30 on every mode except Lite. It needs a PS5 patch

(Pulls out a 100x magnifying glass) well damn, look at those improvements.
What she said
Whoooooo yeah damn that pixel 200 feet away in-game looks amazing 😍
That's what I was thinking while watching the Digital Boundary review of the PS5 PRO🤣
Not watching through youtube on a phone.
It's a complete scam by sony £700 for sharpening software.
Is it just me or does anyone else find it difficult to see ANY difference between the comparison images shown ?
It’s you!
I mean, there’s variables like video compression, type of tv, and distance from that tv
You need to see it in person, really hard to show on TH-cam. Games like dead space remake run like a dream now.
You’re watching it on TH-cam that’s why
It’s a noticeable difference irl and with the right TV or monitor, looks amazing on a LG OLeD
It's still disappointing that the Last Guardian and Bloodborne are still stuck at 30fps even on the PS5 pro.
Last Guardian is 60 fps on disc version on 1.0
Illusion has a 60 fps patch for those games. Just needs a ps5 under 4.50
@DriveupLife22 It only works at certain points before it stops working properly and then you are forced to play the game at 30 fps and then uninstall it and then reinstall if you want to keep playing at 60 fps while using the disc version.
@@Donald_AllanIf you still have a PS4, you can upload your save to PS Plus or back it up to a flash drive. Then, use your PS4 to get past that part. Then, move the save back over. I think that would be easier than uninstalling the game.
@@DriveupLife22Batman: Arkham City is also 60 FPS with an unpatched disc.
The “Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 Games” is ONLY for 2160p and 1440p displays. It does nothing for HD displays, so I am guessing that it is somewhat similar to the PS2 upscaling that the PS3 had, which was due to higher density graphics being available, but where not fully used on the PS2. In the case for the PS5 Pro, it sounds like with the extra processing power, they are able to perform more graphic calculations to make the images appear better at higher resolutions.
"true HD"(1080p) "HD" is 720p
It just sharpens the image
It's like the 720p upscale on the PS3 for ps2 games.
The "Jafar May Need Glasses" meme just says it all...
Yes! I laughed so hard at that. Sums it up perfectly.
The PS5 Pro has already seen a price drop in shops where I live. Coupled with the fact that the Pro was, and still is, available to buy and collect from launch indicates to me that the gaming world has (mostly) come to its senses. These mid gen refreshes are unnecessary. What we want are supported platforms that provide great gaming experiences for a generation.
The ps5 pro is selling better than ps4 pro.
@deacubogdan2263 oh yeh?
Just say you couldn’t afford one my guy, no one will judge you
@@Soul_underground I can go and buy one today. The thing is, I'm not a consumer fool. Unfortunately quite a few are, and that's who these corporations prey on. You buy one? 🤔
@@RAZORREVOLUTION1 sorry I was enjoying these clean graphics you can’t get on ps5. What up?
what we need is a ps1 ps2 ps3 fully backswards compatibility for all games no upscalling bs

I personally favour frame rate over fidelity any day. If the Pro came with a beefy CPU upgrade that would allow open world games to run at 60FPS I’d be a lot more interested, but I think base PS5 still offers really good value.
Um, almost all the open world games run at 60fps on the regular PS5. The Pro lets you play those games at a much better resolution though, and possibly with other extras too.
I’m experiencing higher and more stable framerates in open world games that struggled on the base PS5 such as Baldur’s Gate 3 & Dragon’s Dogma 2. Both games are CPU intensive. Idk how the devs managed to make that work, but it did.
The CPU must be the same minor higher clock speed otherwise it will cause Compatibility issues
@@DeesBees85 there are lots that target 60FPS on base PS5 but are not consistent and can drop in busy areas with lots to load. Examples of this include Cyberpunk, The Witcher 3, Hogwarts Legacy, the newer AC titles, Ghost of Tsushima and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor.
I understand why they didn’t go all out for the CPU as they don’t want to abandon the original console and leave it the dirt, but I think for me personally that type of upgrade would have made me more inclined to purchase it. No matter though, base PS5 performance mode is still smooth enough until the next console releases :)
@@sandwhichbag I’m glad to hear it man. As far as I can tell most people who have purchased the console seem very happy with it so I’m happy. I do have a 4K TV but I’d love to upgrade to an OLED at some point so I think I’m going to save my money for that first of all. Then something like the Pro would be a much more valid purchase for me :)
Shouldn’t the base ps5 already do this lol. Why should I pay $700 to get PS4 games from 2013 look 0.01% better
The base PS5 doesn't have the AI inferencing hardware that enables this filter to work. It's the same silicon that PSSR runs on.
@@KillahMate If its just a sharpening filter.
Then yes it can be added. Lol.
It's not PSSR.
@@MatrixAlphaCWX It's not just a sharpening filter - it appears to be AI-assisted. Lol.

Hes already covered them prior, now hes just covering this less known feature as it isn't a well known one as Sony didn't advertise it at the forefront.
😂
You guys might not notice PS4 enhancements and stuff when watching on TH-cam but in actual use, it’s really nice. You definitely notice a crisp and smoother image.
Some 14 year olds online are saying it’s a waste of their parents money though.
4:25 - I actually think this is because the 3D elements in Tekken 7 are rendered at 1080p but the UI is rendered at 4K and overlaid. I think the naive upscaler is only turned on if the signal is purely 1080p. It has no ability to distinguish between foreground UI elements and 3D graphics.
I keep trying to convince myself that the PRO is worth it, but all of the review videos are incredibly underwhelming.
as an owner, I recommend to wait for more games to receive pro patches. Right now there isnt a whole lot of games that can take advantage of the pro.
I don't know what reviews you've been seeing, but Digital Foundry displayed impressive results. Speaking personally as someone who preordered it, there's a lot of UE5 and PSVR2 games that struggled with low framerates, bad frame pacing, and dynamic resolution often dropping as low as 768p. The Pro fixes that. You can use the Quality graphical settings and still get enough frames to reach the 48 Hz minimum for VRR. Games like Metaphor, Remnant II, Vertigo 2, Rise of Ronin, Dragon's Dogma, Lords of the Fallen, Ghostwire Tokyo, etc. are finally playable with VRR at higher resolutions. In addition to performance and 4K upscaling, PSSR fixes shimmering and other TAA artifacts common in games today (Digital Foundry demonstrated with Stellar Blade). And as for PS4, the AI upscaling they're using for that looks really good in most games. I'm expecting game studios to start targeting it with future titles, as seems to be the case with recent announcements.
The only game i see is improved was FF7 Rebirth, it was like a new game
@@mmstick I appreciate your comment. I do see a lot of owners praising the system in the comments sections of review vids. I'm really waiting for Ryan's "final verdict" video with some gameplay of newer games.
Depends on if you have a vrr capable display and what games that you play.
In my honest opinion, I believe the PS5 Pro are for gamers who play their PS5 games on fidelity mode. I usually play all my Sony games on fidelity mode because I like graphics. Now, I can play in fidelity mode in the upper 50 - 60 fps rather than the locked 30. It makes a huge difference. No so much for performance mode gamers.
Even if this was a free upgrade for base PS5 I wouldn't be too fussed about it 🤷
I've actually lost faith in Sony completely after finding out that PS5 is designed to fail!!!
Why? Liquid metal comes into chemical reaction with the core which creates a thin heat exchange barrier between the two🤯
There was controversy early in the PS5 that the liquid metal would seep through the barrier and leak into the main board and cause the console to overheat. There were articles about it. It was mainly for users who put their console vertical. Ever since I read that, I put my PS5 horizontal all the time. I haven't heard any issues about it since. This was almost 3 to 4 years ago.
@TheSoxor123
this issue is different to the leakage. I watched a well known guy who fixes consoles and he said that he discovered that liquid metal in contact with the core forms a thin layer between them, which over time can cause worse heat exchange and overheating. So I think no matter how console is used (vertically or horizontally) some sort of damage is likely to happen. Imo this new and controversial cooling method hasn't been tested long enough. Sony does their testing at customers' expense...
@pp1mh Until these problems occur, then it's just all speculation. If Sony did ship these knowingly with defects, then it'll probably be the last Sony console I buy.
@TheSoxor123
These days a lot of manufacturers do their products so that they fail sooner or later. It's not meant to last like it used to years ago...prior 2000 or early 2000s. Quality of products drop every year. It's so annoying 😬😢
If Sony walked up to me and said "for $100 right now we'll upgrade your current ps5 and the games will automatically look like this now."
I'd tell them that's worth like $25 at most to me. It's not even worth it to pay the $10 for the ps5 upgrade of ps4 games because you get so little in return. Slightly more pixels wew lad
This isn't hate, just common sense. If anyone wants to blow the money on it, go for it
Hey Ryan. The best content on TH-cam! Thanks for the video. Always happy to hear your input on Playstation. Cheers!!!!
I’m loving the pro. Everybody likes to jump on the bandwagon and hate because their favorite TH-camrs hate something. Currently replaying borderlands 3 and the framerate is significantly improved for both 60 and 120.

Ps5 Pro announced, online haters seethe, etc etc.
@Soul_underground Don't forget the dualsense edge got hate, too. It's currently rated among the best, if not the best, Pro controllers for the PS5.
I still remember all the hate for the ps3...
There’s no difference between them , not sure why Sony spreading lies about their hardware specs
Hopefully Sony can add 1440p to the list and not just 1080p for these older PS4 games that benefit from PSSR. Then we can finally get an image boost to Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5 Pro.

@Tdog_player For sure. I do think the Pro will start to come into its own in a few years, as games get increasingly demanding, but it's not like the PS5 is crap. If I had a base PS5 I almost certainly wouldn't have bought the Pro.
Man, I totally forgot the name of this channel and thankfully, just stumbled upon it randomly. Subbed this time so that doesn't happen again!🙃

For 950 EUR. For teh playerz.
I think you may be confused - this video is not showing the graphical capabilities of the PS5 Pro. This video is about a minor image enhancement feature for some old games that's available as a bonus. You should definitely not be buying the PS5 Pro to play PSVR1 games on it, for 950 EUR or otherwise.
@KillahMate apart from fps boost, and pssr for lazy devs, the pro is not doing enough. if anyone support a device and featurelist of this amount, sony will be more and more anticonsumer :(
@@nattila7713 if you believe that PSSR is for 'lazy devs' then I should warn you to be prepared, because you're very much not going to like the PS6 when it comes out.
However we also had a lot of that kind of attitude on the PC side when we started getting DLSS in games, and people changed their minds once they had some hands-on experience with the technology. So maybe you'll change your mind.
@KillahMate look, horizon2 had the best ps5pro iq so far and that game has no pssr.
yes guerilla has the talent and money, other devs don't so for them pssr is an easy solution.... for the 5% of their ps customers :(
ps6 will be different: 100% of users will have pssr2.0 and perhaps all the experience of pssr1.0 will also help.
dlss1.0 was a joke.
would like to see ps4 games like Shadow of the Colossus, ac black flag/unity, gravity rush 2, gow3 remaster, gta triology remaster, ps4 tearaway & especially the broken games like dynasty warrior 9 etc. basically a "megavid" for all ps4 games side-by-side would be impressive
I look at the side by side comparing and all I think about is that meme from the office where the girl goes “it’s literally same picture” because it truly is in this case.
I really like my ps5 pro but i cant tell a single difference in any ps4 game ive played with this toggled on. Maybe they will improve it in the future.
Can confirm tomb raider definitive edition - which never got a ps4 pro enhancement - looks great
I think Digital foundry covered this Game and it runs at native 2160p on Ps4 Pro.
I could be wrong tho.
Is it just me that notices no difference?
Emperors new clothes?
Me too I really can’t see anything different. I’m not trying to hate either but the ps5 pro really doesn’t seem worth it at all.
@@Alexander_l322 I mean no one should be getting it for this feature. It's just a small bonus. Sony barely even mentioned it existing.
Most of the games are just ever so slight. Driveclub is a big difference and the others are likely more noticeable if you are seeing it on a 65" 4K TV on the actual console and not via TH-cam you would see the difference. I booted up Dead Island 2's PS4 version and even though this feature is only to make PS4 games look better but the game also ran smoother. So much so I needed to make sure I was playing the PS4 version.
i don't have a ps5 i got a pc instead of paying scalpers 1200. i will be getting a pro. ..... going off of y'alls comments my 10700k is bottlenecking my 3070???? i know it was for my 7900xtx.
This sounds like a gimmick they selling people.
I noticed that leaving this setting turned on increases input lag, even while playing PS5 games.
If you already own a PS5, this isn't worth it.
i have a regular ps5 but i wanted a pro so i bought it lol
The 2tb ssd alone makes it worth it tbh.
You could make the same argument about the PS4 Pro. You could also say the same thing about a lot of stuff many of us probably own.
If someone gifts it to you is it worth it???
Watch out for the consoooomers
Alright Sony now remaster ps3 games please!
Noce testing, subbed
Star Wars Squadrons looks identical to SteamVR on PS5PRO using PlaystationVR 1
For the most part, to our naked eyes, we're not always gonna be able to tell the difference for a lot of games. And that's ok. I'm glad the feature is available. It will probably be useful for future gaming content. We still don't have true PS5 games yet. I still have all my old consoles with the exception for my PS1. I don't I will lean to heavily on this feature. The fact that we can barely tell for a lot of these games means they were made as best as they could be made at the time. At this point its apples and oranges. Being a PlayStation enthusiast, gaming enthusiast, I'll still end up buying the PS5 Pro. :)
The features ps5 pro adds are nice but I'll wait for ps6 to see a more tangible upgrade
Yakuza Like a Dragon PS4 is broken aswell. It's way slower than it should be and can eventually crash.
That's barely noticeable to be honest, good thing they didn't market this as a driving feature of the console
The comments for this video seem to be full of people _very_ angry that this feature exists - perhaps Sony shouldn't have mentioned it at all tbh, and just had it run in the background with no toggle available so no one knows about it.
lol this shit does not justify 700 dollars
I can't tell a real difference on youtube. But I think the Pro will serve upcoming games more than enhancing old ones.
Let's see how GTA6 uses the Pro- as well as 1st party Studios.
Love how Melissa has to steal the show before the end of the video 😸
At least they're trying I guess, and maybe this will help with future PS3 backwards compatibility at some point, but yeah this is even more underwhelming than the updates for PS5 games.
I just wish that Sony would implement a decent 4K crt filter to PS1-3 games like Retrotink 4k does.
Tom Clancys Wildlands for ps4 on the ps5pro has that weird glitchy graphics pop-in as well btw. Farcry 5 looks and runs spectacular though.
Love my pro! It was my first ps5 so that may be why I’m so impressed but I think it was well worth the money!
Okay now i finally say.
Its not worth it
I am lovin the PS5 Pro. I see a solid difference in the PS5 games. And am looking forward to booting up some PS4 games soon!
Spider-Man 2 at 4K 40 with all the bells and whistles is stunning
Only game makers enhanced versions you can see noticeable improvements
A simple 16x Anisotropic filtering and Ambient occlusion on a system level would have been much better than this nonsense upscale
I was playing Dead Nation and it cleaned up the image for 4k nicely
I was amazed at how good bf4, titanfall 2, AC ezio collection, and syndicate looked. It did not work well with black flag though. Will be looking for a used copy of unity to try that.
So the ps5 pro is the world's most expensive upscaler...cool😂
The pro for me is for ps5 games, but it’s nice there is something for the ps4 catalog. I’ll use my standard ps4 or 5 depending on those titles. I noticed a few ps4 games without a pro patch look worse in the standard ps5. They are muddier. The titles I remember off the top of my head are Tomb Raider Remastered, Battlefield Hardline and the Air Conflicts series.
Instead of talking about new sweet games, we are talking about this useless crap. What a time to be alive.

And what comes to compressed TH-cam videos on small screens - meaningful differences can be seen there as well. But PS5 vs PS5 Pro does not have meaningful differences in quality.
The more important point is boosts in framrate without LOSING visual detail, which for PS5 Pro is happening with certain titles. That’s great!
Metal Gear Solid Delta is going to look gorgeous on PS5 Pro......
It’s going to look gorgeous on the PS6.
Besides some UI changes that are noticeable there are no real differences that I cam see. I'm looking and really not seeing a real difference
Maybe your problem is that you don't know what UI means
That's probably because you're on a small screen looking for differences in a lossily-compressed TH-cam stream. There's a huge difference in person. Games that support it have better image quality, while UE5 and PSVR2 games get large framerate boosts whether they're supported or not. Enough so that they can reach the 48 Hz minimum for VRR.
Fidelity mode at 60fps I understand you can't see the fos but come on ffs it was literally the selling point made by Mark cerny 🤦♂️

Red Dead Redemption 3 on PS6 in 2030.
PS6 would be two years old by then.
Would be great if Sony had a list of the games which use it but clearly this feature shows a negligble difference overall.
Are you going to cover how a Sony employee got bribed into leaking PSN users including hakooms sensitive information to the Bangladeshi black market for bidders?
Correct me if I’m wrong and let me know if you have more details to this scandal.
Many tell other story. That the picture quality of PS5 Pro have less contrast. Sometimes even less detail.
All this and Sony still refuses to give a bloodborne remaster or patch to play it with 60fps☹️

4:43 it's obviously works in 2160p, just look at the UI clearness. And because game says to the system that it working in 2160p PSSR doesn't activate itself.
Not a selling feature for PS4 games and older.
Some details in SOME games are a bit sharper with a massive 50x zoom on the screen.
90% of the time I just can tell what's better and playing the game even less noticeable.
120 fps on older games with same resolution would be much more enjoyable.
Where is KNACK 1 & 2 FOR PS5!?

what about PS2 games? They are packed as PS4 games if I recall correctly. I'd like to see Bully and Legend of the Dragoon, please
Ghost Recon Wildlands is broken too. The PS4 enhanced mode does the same thing as Just Cause 3.
I was at Walmart last night. 2 PS5 Pro's in stock.
The fact that people have to go around digging like this makes the entire feature a huge waste of everybody's time. Especially when it can lower performance or break a game.
Which game suffered from lowered performance? Also only 1 game has broken visuals with this setting turned on.
Until Dawn for example.

16 minutes of staring blankly at two identical images... Many will buy the Pro and think "wow this looks so so good" when in reality they pissed away an extra $300 to curb their FOMO. I usually try to purchase the latest/greatest but this one is REALLY splitting hairs.
700 for minimal effort upgrade? No thanks, my og system too sexy with the darkplates 2.0. I’d gladly pay a thousand for a system that allows me to play my ps1 to ps5 collection.
Interesting, I've been seeing that flicker in the Burning Shores DLC, will try turning on/off that ps4 enhancement to see if thats the cause
I see a difference in the uncharted 2 remaster, it looks noticeably sharper.
Dark Souls 3, for some reason, looks incredible on PS5pro. Just that game from what I’ve played.
The only game that I've played with the new pssr resolution thing for PS4 games is watch dogs that has a noticeable difference
I try it in heavy rain and different was huge, feels like 4k. Also try with Detroit and different was not so noticeable but still looks better
Good feature to have but no game changer which was expected.
good evening thank you for this video I have a question is the PSVR1 works with the PS5 pro?
if you were playing you wouldn't notice any improvement until you stop and squeeze your eyes
I heard it only applies the enhancement on games below 1080p output.
I got a pro because I didn't get a base ps5 when it came out. I'm still going through my ps4 backlog and ,honestly, I can't see a difference. I'm still glad I got it for the newer games I want to play, but I could've probably gotten away with the base model for those. I could've saved a few dollars. As long as my games don't crash, I don't really care about all of this. Would it be cool if it looked better? Sure! But I'm fine with how they're running.
120 frames on the PS5 Pro on the PSVR2 and you can really see a difference 🎉❤ Sony has outdone themselves 😊

4:19 no. Tekken 7 was 720p on base ps4 consoles and ran at 900p (kinda) on ps4 pro/base ps5. It released at this resolution in order to keep the game locked at 60fps.
According to Digital Foundry/Eurogamer, those resolutions for base PS4/Pro that Mystic claimed are about right. It was the Xbox One version that was 720p (and that version also didn’t receive a One X boost)
That said, fighting game devs are already well aware not aiming for locked 60FPS is a death sentence. The truth is, the console versions of Tekken 7 as a whole were very low effort/budget in terms of optimisation, it honestly doesn’t look out of place compared to 3D fighting games on PS3.
In fact on that note, it also had worse loading times on a base PS4 (after eating 40GB of the HDD, somehow) than Tekken 6 running straight off the disc on PS3.
Bought a PS5 Pro last night and it'd be really cool if we could get an unlocked frame rate mode now on these PS4 titles as well. Xbox series x could do it, so why not the PS5 Pro?
I'm pretty satisfied with the graphics of most PS4 games, so it doesn't come to my personal concern that i absolutely "desire" for remasters to be made for a select few PS4 titles. What Sony needs to focus on is remastering additional PS3 titles and bringing these PS3 titles to modern consoles and coming out with new exclusives for the PS5. No point in having a "graphically enhanced" PS5 Pro under the Christmas tree in 2024 when there are so little exclusives to play on the PS5. By the way, the graphic comparison and improvement from the 2020 launch PS5 to the PS5 Pro is pretty much nonexistent. Unless if you're a TH-camr who reviews gaming tech or a filthy rich person with money to blow, you're a moron if you buy the PS5 Pro instead of the PS5 Slim, js.
Do you need to patch those games or it upscales them by default?
Ghost Recon Wildlands does the same thing with the flickering
