  • Based on research in her book The Gendered Brain, neuroscientist Gina Rippon gives her opinion on why she believes we should rethink the idea of the human brain being 'gendered' and look again at what is really informing our ideas of gender identity.

    Saying we have found no clear cut findings in differences between male and female brains is highly misleading. What she means is that there are differences, as she will admit if you press her, but where there are differences they might be small so we should ignore them. She also never brings up that boys and girls show preferences for boy and girl toys (trucks vs dolls) from as early as 9 months. Even monkeys show gender toy preferences, which can’t be due to social construction. She has an agenda, she isn’t giving a full picture.

    • @ubaidbutt9709
      @ubaidbutt9709 ปีที่แล้ว

      She can have a agenda. However, they all are really making it complicated. Just tell us straight away. Stop beating around the Bush.
      However, I do believe that nurture plays a significant role as well as biology. Choosing biological determinism or blank slate is just polarising.
      People on right side of the political spectrum cry about emasculation of men and masculation of women. If gender was fully dictated by biology, it would be impossible to either feminise men or masculinize women. Because, something innate or intrinsic can't be altered through social conditioning.

    • @WeAreShowboat
      @WeAreShowboat ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ubaidbutt9709 Well said. Tabula rasa and strict determinism are both naive. As for emasculation of men that’s an interesting question. Testosterone is dropping in men. This is likely due to modern males being more overweight, lacking exercise, and EDC chemicals. Now these are caused by the changes to our biology brought about largely by our modern society. So do we file that under nature or nurture? Sometimes we nurture ourselves with nature.
      The social psychological emasculation of men that right wingers are upset about could also be happening, but some of it could be biological (not just psychological) as well, and some of it is likely exaggerated fear mongering to get views.

    • @ubaidbutt9709
      @ubaidbutt9709 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WeAreShowboat I mean if obesity is the cause behind decline in testosterone then it's obviously the case of nurturing ourselves with nature, which supports the notion that nurture plays a vital role too. The U.S. has highest obesity rate in the western world. There must be a reason for that.
      As for psychological emasculation it will be interesting to know the causes. The right particularly employs fear of men becoming weak to attract audience. Their idea of what it means to be a man is based on traditonal gender roles. I do see a shift here, and we have to recognise that modern economic reality doesn't supports the idea of women just sitting at home while men take on the financial responsibility fully upon themselves.

    • @WeAreShowboat
      @WeAreShowboat ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@priscamnguni6388 There’s been a study of newborns (literally like 24-48 hours old) that showed preference. Boy infants stared longer at things compared to girls and girl infants stared longer at faces compared to boys. That suggests at least some of the boy/object and girl/people preference is partially innate and not entirely social.

    Hilarious. So BBC. I said this to Gina Rippon after her lecture about the gendered brain. I was shut down by the host of the evening when about 2 radicals sitting together in the audience shouted “mansplaning” at my comments. However many ladies in the audience came and chatted to me afterwards in agreement.
    I said:
    1) you agree that there is general dimorphism (difference) between male & female brains
    2) women dominate many fields (vet, psychology, languages, PR, modelling, medicine) “yes by around 60-80%!” She says excited... “Is that a problem?” I ask clarifying, “I don’t think so”... “No” she says.
    3) Then why is it a problem when men dominate professions like engineering, surgery, programming? Could this be down to the dimorphism you mentioned? Especially at the extremities of the asocial technical proclivities required males maybe be disproportionately represented - by nature not nurture?
    4) At which ratio would you feel there isn’t ‘sexist prejudice’ within these ‘male dominated’ fields? 50/50? 60-65% female? Or is 70-80% male just natural - in great part down to nature not nurture much like within the female dominated fields
    5) Your colleague Simon BaronCohen disagreed, proved empirically that brain types of babies were already dimorphic before society could mould them... the work of Steven Pinker (& primate studies) also debunks a lot of the claims by the ‘social constructionists’.
    Could it be that your focussing on nurture maybe due to a fundamentally female “nurture” (over “nature”) perspective? *Cancelled*

      General dimorphism doesnt affect total functionality, social, academic or emotional intelligence.
      The problem with male dominated fields contrary to female dominated fields are social and not biologic, and its obviously under the logic that women have fought against neurosexism to earn those positions and men are gatekeeping theirs. Baron Cohen has been refuted before, same as Steven Pinker, because neither consider eugenetics and how primate brains are not rational and work under hormones, not like human brain. She's talking nonsense. As with all characteristics, everybody exists on a spectrum. On average, most men are taller than most women. This doesn't mean that some women aren't taller than some men, but overall, height is a male characteristic. These differences that she's trying to ignore are no different. While there are some brain traits that are primarily male traits, some individual females also have similar degrees of those particular traits ... but that doesn't mean the traits aren't primarily male just like some women being tall doesn't negate the fact that MOST men are taller. On average, males have certain brain structures and women have others. There is some overlap, but that's the same as with anything else. The video below does a great job of explaining it and actually features Gina Rippon as one of the guests.

    Well... sure, elephants and whales are not "smarter" than humans and such statement can be justified by measuring their lower encephalization quotients. However, these big animals are still very smart in their own ways due to their brain size in absolute term. It is partly because bigger brains mean proportionately more functions (though, not necessarily so-called higher IQ or loosely-defined "intelligence" in general). I am disappointed by the quality of this video. Why even bother making it? You think you can reduce such an important topic into 3 mins? Huge mistake.
    So, generally bigger brain means "better".
    Pseudo-intellectuals spewing out PC-ridden cliche and truism something along the lines of "an individual difference is important (duh!)" and gloss over serious scientific facts either deliberately, or ignorantly due to being stupid is downright distasteful.

    I never quite understood this discussion. We are the fruit of our biology whether we like it or not, and also of our skills as a species. I say this because men and women have proven to have neurophysiologically different brains, in that they do not differ from other species, and these differences refer to different abilities as well as in other living species. Living beings of different sexes, although of the same species, play different roles in the struggle for survival and perpetuation. In the fight for survival, strength and physical resistance are determining factors, and the human species does not escape this rule. It is natural, then, that this ability has to say "dictating the rules" and the more present, the difference between the members will be more accentuated. Nevertheless, men and women fighting for the same goal have divided tasks adapted to their biological structures over time. The human species rationalizes their instincts and needs, and from there turns skills into advantages, that is, I am "better" and not just "different with other developed skills". The human being needs to judge and place the other in the "frame of importance of the species" to the point of making men more important than women, among many other judgments dictated by force. Man has never really understood the difference although he says he protects diversity. Sorry but this is the discussion.

    She puts forward a neurological argument but she does not include all the behavouoral psychological arguments as to the differences between men and women. Okay I guess you could argue they are a result of socialital norms and maybe that's true but that does then exclude the evolutionary needs which have results in difference in temperament ie. Women are more compassionate and show signs of more emotional distress due to their role in nature as child bearers and men ten to be more agressive and competitive in order to hunt and find a mate. Of cause there is an overlap, you have men with more traditionally female traits and women with more masculine traits. I just don't think we can conclude their is no consistent differences within temperament just because the functions of the brain is virtually the same. Then there's a further point to this which is there are clear biological differences. We categorise men and women based on their ability to give birth, xx or xy chromosomes and levels of the hormones. If we use biology as the basis to define gender then there is clearly two biological genders even if someone indentifys otherwise you can still see which one of these two they fall under. Granted if you change the definition of gender from a biological one and make it instead reffer to the temperament of the person then granted the line is almost impossible to call. I myself use male and female based on the biology not the numerology, so I would argue there is two genders but that doesn't mean am not happy for someone to live their lives identifying as the opposite gender as I support the rights of the sovereign individual, my of my exs was a trans women who I dated for a year and I saw so much hate during that time and I would always think to myself "why can't people just let her live her life how she wants to". What I am against is life changing surgical decisions being made at a time when someone is still an adolescent and their mind isn't fully formed, the horrors I have seen of people who have made the decision when they were still discovering themselves and the world then want to de-transition. I am alsp concern if we keep pushing the narrative that there are zero differences when there are clear biological and psychological differences, even if a just a result of societial norms or evolutionary reasons, that many young homosexuals will mistake their sexuality with their gender and under go the knife too early on in life. That is my main concern. The fact there is like 72 different genders can only be from defining gender based on neurology and temperament not biology and that does mean everyone's temperament and therefore gender could change over time and will vary and my second concern from that is if legislation gets involved like in Canada and impeeds on free speech laws, I respect and agre that people discrimination out of hate is wrong but the problem lies with the fact the imposed hate speech laws can be easily abused and used to convict people on the grounds of something which can easily be defined. Then my final concern would be the push for inclusions of trans people within sports, particularly combat sports as there are biological advantages for both genders and if you were to put someone who by biological defination was born female in an MMA ring with someone who was biologically defined as a male at birth, while there will be acceptions, this will get dangerous very quickly. Ultimately what I'm saying is I support the right to transition but I think it's unhealthy to dismiss the biological differences, we need to be cautious about the age we are willing to allow surgical procedures to take place and careful about bringing in hate speech laws - I see much of the liberals dismissing these concerns and I say that not identifying as 'right wing' myself. I also want to see these concerns being discussed in mainstream media without the people who share my concerns being labelled as just hateful people as everything I say comes from a place of care for both adolescents and trans people.

    I have a question. How do males and females bond with each other? I don't see how men and women can bond (especially romantically) with each other.
    Women can build incredible friendships and become very close to each other in a way men can't bond, and science shows that women can bond very well with each other. Generally, women are even more social than men are. After something bad happens, a woman quickly rushes to talk to all of her female friends to get support, whereas a man can isolate himself and grief alone.
    Women tend to be more emotional, more caring, more empathic, more compassionate, more affectionate, more loyal, more nurturing, more understanding, more sympathetic, more sensitive, more kind hearted, more peaceful, more calmer, more gentle, more expressive, more intuitive, and more outward than men are, and thus bond more with other women in a special way that they can’t with men. Men, on the other hand, are not that emotional, and thus can’t bond with other men in a special way.
    Women are more comfortable being around with other women than they are with men. They have a type of bond that usually men with women won’t really have, or with men and men. Men are usually much lonelier than women are. Men don't often talk about their personal problems with their male friends like how women do with their female friends. Females produce a lot more oxytocin than males do. And that's a reason why women tend to hug a lot more and be a lot more physically affectionate than men do.

      @@rachidvanheyningen Women feel a lot safer in general with other women than they do with men if either is alone with each other, and it is easier for women to trust other women more than it is to trust a man.
      Men are usually much lonelier than women are. Men don't often talk about their personal problems with their male friends like how women do with their female friends. Females produce a lot more oxytocin than males do. And that's a reason why women tend to hug a lot more and be a lot more physically affectionate than men do.
      Most daughters have a very strong bond with their mother, while they don’t have one with their father, and most sons don’t have that strong of a bond with neither their mother nor their father. Most females have a very strong bond with their sisters, while they don’t have one with their brothers, and most males don’t have that strong of a bond with neither their sisters nor their brothers.
      A big reason why many women hope to have a daughter instead of a son when they are trying to get pregnant is for the experiences one doesn't get with a son, like shopping for her prom dress together or going for mother/daughter manicures. In many cases as a girl grows up, she becomes closer to her mother whereas boys aren't generally as close with their parents. And also, it's also harder for females to bond with their brothers than it is with their sisters for the exact same reasons.
      The bond that two females have with each other is the strongest bond of them all, and that's one of the reasons why sayings like “girls always have to stick together” exist. The friendship of males and females can hardly be as good as a female to a female relationship from a woman’s point of view. How can a man and woman have a special strong type of bond with each other if women have a special strong type of bond with each other while men don’t have one with each other?

      i suggest you to watch the documentary "the mask you live in", it talks precisely why men are less emotional, why men don't bond like women, why men don't talk about their problems

      and when you stereotype women as emotional chatterboxes and men as cold, you're completely ignoring that there are introverts and extroverts in both women and men, and you're also ignoring that people's temperament is also influenced by their attachment style, you can find women who are cold and don't bond with others, and men who are submissive and tolerate women's moods, in online male circles referred to as "betas"
      films and tv shows are full of male protagonists who are hopelessly in love with some woman and do anything for her

      @@FruityHachi I heard that lesbian relationships are healthier because they understand each other. If both partners understand each other, they won’t want to break up with each other. I also heard that women have higher rates of depression when married (in straight relationships). There is a very small percent of women that are happy in heterosexual relationships.
      So it's very hard for men and women to bond with each other and have a strong bond with each other. Both men and women think differently, behave differently, react in a different way.
      The more similar two people are, the easier it is to relate and understand each other, resulting in a better, more fulfilling connection. I also read somewhere that even with the divorce rates what they are, most heterosexual marriages that don't end in divorce are still unhappy, and can absolutely relate to experiencing significantly more depression while married than while single.

This is just one of those woke videos that is incredibly biased by trying describe male and female brains from a politically correct point of view that men and women are completely 100% equal to fit woke narratives and make anyone who suggests that biological differences exist between sexes brains are primitive out dated line of thinking such as how in the old days scientist discovered that mens brains on average weighed more than female brains but is clearly wrong because whale brains are much bigger than homosapiens male brains and therefore both male and female brains are completely the same yet fails to take into account differences in brain structures, grey/white matter and neuronal connectivity between male and female brains which do actually on average differ between both sexes albeit slightly of course, yet they do differ significantly enough on average that they are indeed different!!

Is it just because they were socialized to be creative and produce brilliant music or could it be because of a neurological drive that the majority of women just don’t have? Anyone _with_ a functioning brain knows that just because you’re the same gender as someone else doesn’t mean your brains are going to be identical.
