I love how open-minded the adults are when the gender of the children are reveled. They don't get defensive about their previous behavior, which is quite refreshing.
brits are also mostly non religious compared to the majority of america, which that can have an effect on traditional gender roles and how strict can they be on what girls and boys can and cannot do
Lots of the comments are taking this as transgender propaganda or gender neutrality. I don't think those are even the main issues at all! This seems to be much more about gender justice - giving women opportunity to develop logical skills, spatial awareness and be horoes or adventurers instead of (necessarily) housekeepers and damsels in distress. It's giving boys the opportunity to develop different aspects of their emotional intelligence, and yes, housekeeping skills too. I can't believe people are more concerned with farfetched conspiracy theories when there are such blatant and more serious issues being approached.
So it was necessary to dress the boy as a girl and girl as a boy then speak to the boy as if he is a girl and call him Sophie????? They did not allow the children to choose what toy they wanted. Also to suggest a Man or a Women cannot tell the difference between a boy and a girl is not believable. You don't have to dress a girl as a boy if you want her to play with certain toys just don't exclude them.
TheLovelyLuna Where is that article, you cannot change the way someone or something thinks in a few minutes so you missed me also what is boy and girl to babies/toddlers because they understand a lot but i don't think words just click in their heads like that.
tRigs15 But the way people explain these is awful Women/girls are emotional and they are bossy and they should be able to do this and that and be skinny and not complain and not open their mouths about anything that they see is wrong they are supposed to be submissive. Men/boys are strong muscular almost never emotional do all the work be the leader of the house, hold control over their woman and speak for everyove they are supposed to be dominant. Obviously their are more to add to both categories but people are trying to stop what these people think
As a girl with 2 brothers, I played with all the "boy's toys." Yet, my brothers still didn't play dolls with me nearly as often, and I had to turn to my mom to play. I think boys refusing to play with girls toys is a far more significant barrier these days, as girl's toys are far less likely to be used across genders
@@pratishdhiman4332 It's true--toys that are perceived to be for girls are often the softer, more passive toys. Boys get the toys that induce more active/intellectual play
They pointed out how boys toys help the brain to develop certain parts of the mind that girls toys fail to improve on. It's sad that they're more concerned with allowing the children to play with whatever they want rather than being more concerned with ensuring their children are using the proper tools to help their little brains develop properly. Genderizing toys isn't what matters, intellectual equality seems more important in this matter
My thoughts exactly. I think it'd be better though, if rather than worrying whether if it's for a girl or a boy, why not just design toys that are meant to help all children develop.
Katharine Lovegood girls you dont improve social behaviour. Boys toys are way better at helping a child develop their brain. My mom gave me "boys" toys ever since I was a baby. I would hate it if my mom gave me "girls" toys. Just saying
TBH the boys toys looked more fun than the girls. This might have worked better if there were not as many differences in the toys, perhaps just have some things that are different color/style, like make the pike pink and sparkle for the 'girls'?
Damn, people really missed the point in this one, it's not denying the possibility of differences, the video just shows how much of these behaviours are from social origins, rather than biological. It shows how we really exaggerate in the tiny differences there actually are and how we treat children, which should behave more or less similarly, in quite different ways, based on something that, although has some impact, is mostly irrelevant at that stage. The campaign wasn't "no more men and women", because, then, biological differences are more noticeable, but it is towards stopping giving so much importance to gender, especially in child. I see no reason for it being inheritedly negative.
You are the one thinking it's only about treating children the same. But it isn't. It is about destroying the concept of males and females. You need to do research on what leftists are standing for before making such ignorant conclusions.
What social origins? No one "forced" me to prefer cars, trucks, and guns. I was always attracted to such toys on my own. Barbies and dolls didn't interest me or attracted my eyes at all. And this is why toy companies market certain colors and toys to a specific gender. If they choose to market bright colored toys to boys (to show how "progressive" they are), they will start losing money because 99% of boys won't be interested. "Gendered" toys are based on a psychology research they paid for before producing their toys. I'm all for letting kids play what they want, but this video is a piece of gender dysphoria propaganda pushed by cultural marxists (leftists) to destroy western society.
ᛃᛟᚺᚾ I'm taking conclusions based on what the video claims and presents, not on what any other group or movement is saying or thinking. This video passes me a quite clear message that they are criticizing the different treatment among children, when they show the adults were giving the children the toys based on their (supposed) gender, not their preferences. Be careful not to generalize things, I'm speaking strictly about this video, not any other movement.
ᛃᛟᚺᚾ "99% of boys wouldn't be interested"? How can you know so? I doubt every single toy company makes rigours studies related to child development which lead to strong conclusions that what causes them interest in such subjects are the biological factors in play, not the fact they have all been raised in societies that reinforce that behaviour. If you have any proof of such studies, please, show me and I'd gladly try to analyse it.
Pedro Franca But this video is the direct reflection of cultural Marxism. This video isn't some sort of independent random work. It is funded by Marxist groups who want to destroy the concept of male and female. Don't be so naive. When I was in university, in one business lesson we talked about how corporations use psychology to maximize their profits. In one real example we talked about a study which was funded by a large toy corporation to see what boys and girls preferred the most. The study involved over a thousand children. Anything they show you on advertisements and tv is always based on psychology. Even Hollywood are pushing messages and brainwash their audience and it's all based on psychology. Without psychology they wouldn't know how the human brain works. If you want to disagree with what I said, at least, show me evidence. "I doubt every toy company makes rigorous studies related to child development...". This isn't a fact, it's your personal opinion. And toy companies don't pay for child development studies, they pay for what children are mostly attracted to based on their gender. It's for maximizing profits. Please tell me, why do you think boy clothes and toys are marketed towards boys and girl toys and clothes are marketed towards girls? You think there's some sort of a worldwide conspiracy to "gender" everything? And what is the problem with this? Will you wear a pink mini skirt on your hairy muscular legs to show how "progressive" you are? I'm just trying to understand how people like you think.
My father bought my siblings and I both boy and girl toys . We played with all of them and like to think we've turned out just fine . Playing with toys that were for the opposite gender didn't make us gay or trans . We've all grown up and are happily married to the opposite gender. Now I have a child of my own and let him play with water he wants.
I am a 29 year old woman and all my childhood i played with boys and girls toys . I am a mother of 5 girls and they play with anything as well. Toys are toys . As long as they are having fun who cares !
As a girl with two brothers, I found their toys to be way more fun. Things to build with, cars, trains, tracks, legos, linkin logs, they’re really more physically creative materials. Dolls and most other toys marketed towards girls are more mentally creative as you often use your imagination with them like playing house with barbie’s. Both can have stories around them but from what I see toys marketed towards boys are generally more engaging for the mind. I think it’s dumb. Hot wheels and tracks were the shit.
It would be more credible if they'd just let the babies choose the toys. You can't put a toy in front of their faces and say "they play with it, they like it" rather than what they prefer. There's a Norwegian documental that talks about it, "the gender equality paradox", a little long but very interesting.
Thats the point though? The experiment is showing how kids are conditioned based on sex, the adults here encourage them to play with the toys that correspond with gender stereotypes. Not that men and women don't have differences, but the reason for that is both biological and social rather than one or the other
It says...The Experiment: Are you sure you don't gender-stereotype children in the toys you choose for them? The experiment is about the way adults see the children, not about the way the children are.
I work with pre-school aged children. I recognized that the girls wanted to play with dinosaurs and the boys wanted to play with My Little Pony toys, kids do not give two shits what you think if it's a "boy" or "girl" toy.
At my daycare I worked at, all toddlers fought over the baby dolls, regardless of their sex assigned at birth. They all wanted to take care of a baby 🥰😍 it was so sweet
When i was little, i outgrew the girl's toy section in a store very quickly and would often go to the boy's section because that's were all the electronics, pokemon stuff and t-rexs were.
Sameee like holy shit. It's not that I didn't like girls toys, it just seemed to be the same things again and again. It didn't have other toys sometimes even. So naturally I looked around in the boys aisle, and this is coming from a girl who loved pink and make up.
I'm the oldest of 3 boys and my parents dressed me in unisex and gave me toys that stimulated my brain without thinking about gender. They proceeded to have 2 more boys that got all my old stuff. Now that we're 17, 14 and 11 they give us stuff we want, still with no thought of gender. I believe that's what all parents should do.
I had 3 older brothers too. My parents would dress me in there hand me down clothes and treated me like one of them. Looking back I wish they had differentiated more. If I ever have a daughter Im going to make her feel special for being a girl.
Even that young babies are forced to play with certain toys. Toys in this vedio are not just toys. Im surprised how many these people dont understand what it actually means.
Pretty sure he has see all those words spelt right I know you're harping on the one wrong one like your mom did with you but some people know more than one language I know that might surprise you
Man I tried so hard to get my son into toys other than cars and tools but he has a keen interest in things requiring his fine motor skills, that being said he LOVES teddies and is starting to show interest in baby dolls. I lost my ability to stereotype when my younger brother was accosted by my family for playing with dolls. The devastation in his eyes has haunted me since and I encourage boys or girls who ever to play with what ever they want. Toys are toys.
So... you learned to let kids to play with whatever they wanted YET you "tried so hard" to get your son to like barbie dolls and teddies instead of cars and tools.... Yeah... your IQ seems to be unbelievably low.
A little over 20 years ago before Christmas my 1st child came to me crying because of the toy catalog for Toys R Us. I asked her why she was so upset. She told me that there was something that she wanted but it was for boys. I had her show me. She wanted Hotwheels or Matchbox cars and a parking or mechanics garage. I told her that just because there are only boys in the picture doesn't mean it is just for boys and that she can ask for whatever she likes. I don't like that advertisers depict gender roles for their toys.
Toy manufacturers go by what the average child wants and most girls want girly toys. It has to do with their biology and how their brains are wired. The same with boys, most boys don't want girly toys. When you start muddying the waters and forcing it on them from a young age we end up with children that are confused and wanting to identify as the opposite gender. No doubt in my mind these transgender kids are the way they are because of their leftist, feminist mothers and somethings fathers pushing them in that direction. Nothing wrong with either playing with toys of the other gender, I used to like the kitchen sets and doll houses that girls had. Playing with them at their friends house is one thing, buying it for them just because they show an interest is not good for their development. In the end you have to look at your children's social experiences. If you separate them from the social norms of other children, you will end up with a child that has trouble fitting in, gets bullied and misses out on many of the experiences other children have. Not all children are the same, but a child that fits in with their peers will have a much happier childhood and is more likely to be successful as an adult. It amazes me considering how hard trans and gay children have had it, so many parents promote these behaviors from birth in their children. Sexuality should not even be a concern till puberty, but if you're dressing your 2 year old boy in dresses and buying him dolls and other girly toys, you are promoting it.
I'm going to take a little guess that you aren't a psychologist. I know people who are of the QLGBT community. They have siblings that are straight. Their parents didn't force "opposite gender" toys or clothing on them. They were raised in the traditional way. The individual person just doesn't relate to the gender they have been born. It is not for us to decide what a child plays with or how they should dress. But that is what society has done. Just because a girl wants to play with trucks and more developmental toys doesn't mean they are masculine, gay, gender confused, or forced. Because a boy likes to play with dolls doesn't mean it either. What it means is that they just want to play with what they want. Infants and children don't think about sexuality the way adults do. The toys and clothing don't make the person...the person does.
Billy Fowler Dude, you're a fucking idiot. It's the other way around. By reinforcing these retarded gender stereotypes, we are telling children that if they want to do X or like Y, they must be the opposite gender.
I would take an educated guess and suggest that Toys R Us, Hotwheels and Matchbox use statistics to decide their target audience and then put them in the pictures. This is why we don't see 75 year old women in these pictures either. A target audience is extremely important in advertising if you want to sell product. You probably neglected to explain this to your daughter as well.
DumbVentriloquism she was only four at the time. So, no I didn't explain it that way. I put it in a context she could understand. You might not be as educated as you assume.
My baby sister likes swords. I got her a foam one to help her stop hitting people with rough toys but she turned it around and hit me with the plastic side.
A lot of people in the comments are saying this isn't credible because the children aren't being allowed to pick their own toys. Keep in mind, that's is NOT the question. They aren't testing which toys the kids prefer. They're testing to see if the adults have biases in the toys they give to the kids based on the gender of the children
Really interesting. I find this to have similarities with the concept of learning a language. I've always been told that it's easier for kids to learn new languages, that they are sponges. I now wonder if being more mathematical/practical/logical with boys as young as toddlers gives them advantage later on in their lifes at learning all those concepts better, and girls, on the other hand, aren't shown all those things, perhaps giving them a disadvantage.
@@AliciaGonzalez-pk3mwyes it does. Yet if we could just not make boxes maybe? Because I don't believe the ALL girls or boys did this and that. Maybe have more children in such experiments. I'm female, I wasn't into dolls at all and you could even say I looked like a little boy, my mom was more on the practical side, so I had short hair, practical rather than pretty clothes, though at occasions I also wore skirts and dresses and was fine with it. I always loved to move, jumping, running, climbing. Was the fastest in my elementary, even among the boys, and overall just super sporty despite being a very small person. Played mostly outside with all genders and also ages, and a lot unattended by parents. It went on with me being interested in all kind of stuff but especially science, I then studied engineering. Did Karate for 8 years, nearly made the black belt. Let's say there were around 25% females in the Technical university I was at, and that was a natural number as programms like "Girls day" to promote science among females were just beginning. I never felt transgender, I was a girl that just liked "boyish" stuff 🤷♀️ In uni, we girls didn't want 50/50, what we wanted was to be treated equally, no stupid remarks by the profs or males would have been nice, but not everyone was open minded, despite the girls often had better grades, because seriously which girl chooses engineering if they don't feel like that they can do it? While on the boys side you had boys that chose engineering because that's what boys do. Those boys weren't really good. So, are there differences? Yes, but it's never black and white, it's a spectrum snd we should just stop putting people instantly in boxes and just not prevent them to do what ever they like and stop judging the shit. If most girls then chose to be nurses and teachers and educators, so be it. Just don't make it hard flr the ones that don't. Likewise just leave the boys alone that love to be in a kindergarten, or be a florist rather than contruction worker. The only problem left I see, is the way certain jobs are payed, because they are considered womanly. We desperately need to change that.
I used to work at a toy store (i know, dream job) and it was really common to see some parents forcing their kids to choose certain toys. One day a little boy started crying because he wanted a Barbie doll and his mom didn't buy that, but got an even more expensive toy (a set of three little trucks). As a worker I wasn't allowed to say anything, in fact my boss made that pretty clear at first. This is a real problem, everything starts at home, and exposing kids to this stereotypes is a terrible move.
The little boy could become a stylist in the future. Actually "girl toys" have more practical functions like dress/undress, button/unbotton, tie shoe laces.
@@jennwheeler1430 I think they're partly designed for that purpose. Playing with barbies requires creativity and emotionality, but "boy toys/activities" like geometric puzzles or running and getting dirty make a child smarter and fitter. That's why girls are pushed into femininity and boys into masculinity. It is supposed to keep the status quo alive.
@@jennwheeler1430 Feminity on it’s own is not weak, but when it is shown in men it is definitly a weakness, the same goes for women who are masculine. It is a weakness in the goal of being a more attractive and normal female
I just played with every type of toy as a child. I had a nice little car collection and was quite excited when I got a toy car I had a few different hotwheels playsets for them too that I have great memories of. At the same time I loved to play house and barbie and had lots of those dolls too. The main thing is my parents never made a big deal about it like they do now I think it's better not to look so deeply into things unless it's a scientific study. real life does not need all this over analyzing
You should watch the full documentary. These prejudices adults naturally have mean girls don't get the same intellectual training during their early stage in brain development with things like spacial awareness which later mean they are less likely to be good at engineering based subjects and careers.
This video is important because it shows socially how something we find so natural nowadays can constrict and trap a child into a box. My mother was very much into trying to make me more girly, always trying to push me towards female things, pink things, longer hair. She would forbid me from cutting it, we would fight in stores because I wanted different clothes than she did, hers being more feminine than I wanted to wear for myself. I always felt constricted into a box, my brothers always having fun, doing "boy things". I believe that it starts by this unconscious leaning towards gendered things that can solidify people into stereotypes. I love my family and my mom, but we still fight over this concrete issue, she has become lenient over more than a decade. Social imprinting begins young and can stay with us forever, you don't label your kids what they play with or what they do. If you are open, I feel your child will grow up more creative and positive from that free space. I am not a mother or anything, but if I was, from a social standpoint i feel this test is pointing out the social consequences of consumer gender imprinting, cause these adults didn't hesitate in their toy choices.
My parents gave me a wide range of toys as a child. I had lots of cousins of both genders, so I had quite a rough-and-tumble childhood that had a good mix of "boy" and "girl" things. I didn't wear dresses, but I had bows on my head even as I scrambled through the dirt. I had pony toys and I had steel construction vehicle toys. So for me, it wasn't about what was for boys or girls, it was about what I wanted to play with.
I think it was more of the carer's influence than the toddler's, the careers picked the more "girly" toys because the child was identified to be a girl. Edward is even seen having an interest in the robot at first which is a more of a "boy" toy.
Pedro Franca Of course they did! They don't know the kid! If you don't know the kid the safest thing to go for is to pick things kids like that generally like! They were told the boy was a girl so they get girly stuff, makes sense. This is not society forcing norms but adults following the average interests of small kids depending on what they know about them!
After having my first child, I was acutely aware of how uncomfortable girl’s toys made me feel. When my son started playing with a baby doll in the pink aisle at our local store, I struggled to not think it odd. Instead, for Christmas, we got him a baby doll of his own. (He’s 2) I help him take the clothes off and feed the dolly and change it’s diaper. It’s adorable really. We’re having another and, if this one is a girl, we will not be modifying the toys in our home. My son has loads of cars and trucks, but mostly it’s puzzles and games. Any daughter would have that too. It’s hard though because even cartoons seem so gendered. It’s actually a struggle as a parent to provide gender neutral toys.
lol My kids play with whatever they get second hand. My Son gravitatates to cars and trucks, but will alsop play pretend with animals and people and LOVES a good cuddly toy. My daughter likes doing things with hewr hands, if she gets a fluffy toy it's for whiping around lol I own very few gender specific toys and love watching them learn and discover, but I also see things they are doing that do fit some steryotypes with no help from me. I wish people would just chill out.
When I was a baby/toddler I LOVED lego and building blocks, my parents and grandparents never deprived me of playing with them because I was a girl. I really loved baby dolls and pretending to be a mummy too. I remember one Christmas I got a baby doll and a giant box of blocks together, it was the best.
You can't deny that psychologically men are inclined towards things and women towards people, generally speaking. And that's why adults tend to give gender specific toys to children. But I didn't heard someone to prohibit a boys to play with dolls and vice versa. I think that we shouldn't suggest children what toys they should play with, but to ensure the availability of various toys and let them choose.
I put my daughter in boys and girls clothes. One day she’s in a dress and the next she in an outfit picked from the boys section. Why? Because the boys clothes fit her better She plays with both boys and girls toys. Why? Because she’s a child and all toys are fun. She doesn’t know the difference and she doesn’t care.
Melanie Barksdale 19 months in a few days. She likes to pick her clothes already so it’s funny to see her in a shirt that says ‘cool dude’ with a bright pink skirt
Encrenciel Studio excuse your hateful. self. My child will be raised in a way that makes her happy. In a way that makes her healthy and respect both men and women. I’m not forcing her into a role. I’m letting her pick. And as I mentioned certain boy outfits FIT her better. When she’s older she may decided she prefers dresses and pink clothes and all the glitter but for right now she’s 19 months old. She does not care. For heavens sake it’s people like YOU that make me worry about having a child into days age. You care not that my daughter is being raised happy healthy. And instead judge simply because of clothes. It it you that is a disgusting human being. And I pray you never have children and spread such hateful talk.
I gave my children both kinds of toys, and the boy was attracted to toys that included movement (like cars) whereas the girl was not interested in them at all, and preferred dolls in an unquestionable manner. The boy played with some dolls too, but only by taking them for a ride in a dolls-stroller... (I myself like both kinds of toys, so I was cooperative in both cases.) So all these experiments...
I played with dirt. My parents worked outside most of the time, so I was with them, and they would frequently forget to bring toys, so I got dirt, odd scrap wood, and tools they weren't using. And spoons. I had a thing for spoons apparently.
I am 1/2 of a set of boy/girl twins. Because we were twins we always shared toys and played with all different types. It was clear from early on that I had a leg up from my female peers just due to the toys I was playing with. Even into adulthood, it's clear I developed a much stronger sense of spatial awareness and affinity to STEM subjects.
Hmmm. That's just you. I'm female. I was handed down boy and girl toys from my older siblings. I loved dolls, tea sets pretty things, but preferred playing with trucks lots of cars, Lego and a toy helicopter , my favourite. The boys toys all belonged to my brother seven years my senior. I got a Science degree after high school and then became an airline pilot. My brother, not so good at stem subjects got an Accounting degree then became a flight attendant after I took him flying. I have kids, boy and girl. Boy only wanted balls and cars to play with. Girl only wanted dolls, balls and lego. Both are extremely academic and musical and both want to pursue a career in the arts. Go figure.
I remember being in kindergarten and getting in trouble with the teacher because I wanted to play with the building blocks on the boys side of the room. I thought that the little girls kitchen was boring with all of its little plastic fake food and miniature dishes. I wanted to build bridges.
Mary Light I have an 18 month old girl and a nine-month-old boy and they play with the same toys. My boy really likes baby dolls so I bought him one. So then he has his own baby doll that his sister won't try to take away from him.
@@irrelevance3859 As the video said, how they are raised has a lot to do with it. And, despite all their differences, it is completely impossible to tell a female and male brain apart.
When I was younger, I aleays asked queations like "Why can't I have that blue shirt?" or "Why is my watch pink? I wanted that dark blue." At school my first friend was a girl and at that time I thought that I couldn't be friends with boys. Today many of my friends are boys because I prefered their clothes, their toys, and I learnt that boys are not just heartless animals, they actually supported me a lot more than my girl friends. People always used to say that I 'was in love' with them even though I was adamant that we were just very good friends. Girls started staying away from me and I heard one call me a 'mixup'. She was a spoiled brat anyway though, everyone was happy when she left. My point is, all our parents had pushed it onto us that boys are blue, girls are pink, and that girls are dresses and boys are jeans. We need to make sure that doesn't happen, and if you include the point of the video, refusing to buy your daughter a 'boy toy' ( typing that was disgusting.) may have more damage than you think. -i also hate when you go against the stereotype and people start calling you trans. that's not how being transgender works. not that it's bad to be trans, we're all beautiful, even if your parents tell you to get a boy cut because it 'doesn't look right', ignore it
its lowkey sad to see girls still turning on each other to this day. like, c'mon, i thought we would be over this already. gender is only a social construct. also literally why does everything involving two people of the opposite genders immediately cause others to refer to romance? either they're friends, or they're not. i've seen absurd ships being made 'cause, "well she's a girl and he's a boy"
I remember when I was younger at my daycare they had roads you could stick together to make a little town, both girls and boys would take the cars and pretend they were people and they would have relationships with other cars and there was always lots of drama ahaha. It was great :)
Dear BBC, thanks for such an interesting experiment! I have translated it into Simplified Chinese and have the ASS subtitle file. Would you like to add it as an option for the viewers? Please let me know.
When I have children, for the first year or so of their life, I'm going to buy neutral toys like blocks, wooden trains, and such. If I get them stuffed animals or blankets, they won't be pink for a girl or blue for boy, they would be neutral colors like green, purple, yellow, and orange. As they get older, I will let them decide what toys they want to play with.
No need to avoid specific colors. My daughter had both dolls in pink dresses and blue and green soldiers and action figures, I don't see a problem. Although in the beginning I did just what you said, tried to avoid stereotypical toys for girls or boys, after a while I had no problem with them either. My daughter loved pretty much all of her toys :D
When I was a kid even though I had many "girls toys" I also enjoyed my dad's box of toys when he was a kid like, hot wheels, this walking robot dog, cash register, space lego sets, action figures. I didn't really understand we're my dad had got these toys when I was little because my parents always geared me towards looking in the girls section. Later on my mom would leave me alone to look at items in the girls section. And I remember this one time I found this awesome outfit of grey basket ball shorts with green waist band..... and REAL pockets, and this awesome grey hoodie with short sleeves. I really wanted them but my mom was sorta raining on my parade, saying this like how bout this teeshirt with a cat on it, or girls will look at you and won't be your friends. I eventually got her to buy it. Just saying I sorta suffered the gender gap even though I loved girls things and boys things.
When my little brother Jed was a little boy, he slept on a Dora the Explorer bed. He also had a stuffed horse, which he named Horsey. He also played with my Barbie dolls and stuffed animals while I was in school. He also sang lullabies to my baby doll named Emily. Now, he's 20 years old. He is now a sensitive person who knows how to talk to people. He also knows how to calm people down. He is also very polite and forgiving. His friends are all girls. When my youngest brother Jeremiah was a little boy, he loved soft toys and superheroes. He loved feeling my faux fur boots and my faux fur jacket. He also loved babies. He loved his teddy bear. He is now 15 years old and will be 16 years old on September 17th. He is very sweet and cute. He always tells Mommy that he loves her whenever he goes upstairs. If you're wondering about the teddy bear, we still have it. It still looks brand new.
A funny thing I have noticed as a long time preschool teacher is that for the most part, little boys are as attracted to shiny and glittery things as the girls are! They love shiny dresses and glittery shoes - just all the sparkling things! With the children I teach, they are only 3 and 4 and quite often boys do want to play dress up and wear dresses. I really think it is because they don't understand the gendar bias there is. I think that once they start getting older and more self aware they start to think "Oh, this is not a boy thing." This is part of why I love young children so much. They have not learned to care about what others think they should be doing and they play with what makes them happy
Good notes, but you seem to believe it is better not to guide them to learn cultural norms. Why? That is a philosophical/religious value, not a scientific standard, and some people believe differently. But consider if staying out of teaching gender differences is different then staying out of directing the kid to play somewhere other than the street - if these are fundamentally different kinds of lessons then how so?
I think its good that boys and girls play play with toys of the opposite gender. Boys become more caring and senstive and girls become more confident and less timid.
I remember being shocked when my male second cousins were given fun toys to play with by their grandmother, while the female second cousins were given Bible covers. A few years later, when they were teenage girls and I was making jewelry, I made the girls necklaces. I didn’t give the boys anything. Gender specific, yes, but jewelry was what I was doing. I just wanted them to get something fun.
My parents kinda treated me like a girly girl when I was a baby, but as I got older, they started to give me gender neutral items, and eventually, boy things. Heck, I even asked for boy toys in my happy meals at McDonald’s
I remember my Kindergarten time (I was there until 2000 and then for 4 more years, during school for the evening, because this kindergarten also had students form the primary school there) and they didn't forced you into gender toys. The only things that really where for specific genders where in the role play areas and it was no problem for me as a boy, to wear a dress. I had a dress that I really liked and wore it sometimes. It's doesn't changed me. I'm not gay, I don't wear women clothes. I only liked that dress and spin with it. My most favorite toy was still Lego and especially the tiny room, where we could keep our builded things. Okay I lied a bit. The most favorite toy was my Gameboy color. In primary school we where allowed to bring our Gameboys during the holidays and play the whole day. The holidays here where 6 weeks in the summer, 2 for Christmas, 2 in autumn and 2 in spring for Easter. The kindergarten only had open half the time but still enough to play Pokémon.
Interesting idea but I think it would have been better to see how the same people treat boys vs girls rather than only letting them interact with one child
Personally I'd be more inclined to give the babies softer toys regardless of their gender. I would probably think that babied are more drawn to soft and cuddly object because they're soothing.
having work with young children have long let go of these stereotypes. i let them play with whatever they please, and be free . as long as they arnt hurting themselves or each other
DarksideIsTheNewBlack that's the point: to show what interests them is not necessarily determined by biological factors, as they'd be fine with all kinds of toys, but, instead, by people who, like those adults, impose stereotypes into the kids
Steven Glansburg I am not saying that you'd have to be transgender to like behaviours society deems ss for the opposite gender, that's not my point and I believe neither is the video's
I️ see some people in the comments disagreeing with the video, saying that boys actually prefer “boy toys” and girls prefer “girl toys”. Well, I️ think that children prefer what is most interesting to them, which tends to be bright colors, smells, and sensations. This goes for most children, regardless of gender. I️ however don’t think that we should get rid of the idea of boys and girls. But if a kid wants to do/wear something that girls or guys don’t usually wear/do, let them go for it if it makes them happy. It doesn’t necessarily mean they will be a certain way. Just let children be children!
Man I realized this years ago and have been emphasizing personality traits, intelligence and virtues over saying your beautiful only. We don't have to switch clothes for this realization. Also this does not mean we have to throw out completely conventional gender ideas.
Look. I’m a woman. When I was little I had dolls and a kitchen, and HotWheels and YuGiOh cards (as an example I had both “girl” and “boy” toys) and I grew up normally. I’m not a lesbian nor transgender so don’t say shit. I completely pretend to do the same with my future kids. Let them choose any toy they want without growing up with the “girl/boy” toy thing just because ones are pink and the others are blue. I work at McDonald’s as a cashier and one day this man came with his son and when I showed the child the toys we had (which are all plushies with big glittery eyes) the dad asked me “don’t you have BOYS toys?” and I internally got mad. I hope this kind of mindset changes.
This is why my son has a doll. I was adamant he learn to be gentle with animals and babies. But also has puzzles and other things to engage his brain. Same stuff I've used in my pre-K classrooms.
It is one thing to offer a little girl a truck to play with, or offer a boy a set of toy dishes. But to change their attire and give them new names - attire and names opposite to what they are - brings about immense confusion to the child. Shame on you, BBC, for promoting such confusion in little ones.
When my little brother was young his favorite movies were Barbie movies and he loved the color pink but that didn’t make him any less of a boy and it still doesn’t
I played with the same toys that were passed down to me by my 8 years older brother except his G.I Joe dolls that I didn't want, I had Barbie dolls instead of that.
Clothes are clothes and toys are toys. I'm a mum of five children and a Meemaw. The only things they've wanted is love and understanding. Letting them make their own voices hear in decisions that affects themselves.
I'm an only child, so my parents let me choose all of the type of toys that I wanted. I ended up sleeping not only with baby and animal dolls on my side, but also plastic gun and mini cars, in my childhood. And I grew up fine.
lol same here! I liked so-called "girly" toys, like "barbies, baby dolls, kitchen sets," but I also enjoyed cars, action figures, sketch pads, and guns...
Wait, are the adults the test subjects? If it's the babies the experiment is very biased and not accurate at all. They weren't offer a choice instead they were occupied with the toys the biased adults gave them.
Ahhh yes. I felt this as a child, I wanted to play with remote control cars and helicopters but wasn't allowed to touch my brothers toys and instead was given dolls. One time we went to the mall because my mom wanted to buy us a present, I chose a remote controlled car but my mom talked me out of it. As a child I remember thinking that the boys toys was so cool and amazing and I want to play with it too, instead of paper dolls and Barbies.
I begged my parents for years to buy me legos. Then my younger brother got them. He did not want to play with them so they became mine. That is something I will never forget. That and no new bicicle for you unless you have straight As at the end of the school year. And me saving for months for a new computer just for my brother to get a better one in three months. They blamed me for not sharing when I complained for not getting it but having to save. At the time he was spending more time on my computer than I did, and whenever I would say to him to go out of my room, he complained to parents and then got what he wanted. He never had to save for anything and got everything on the plate. He got a car for finnishing highscholl. I got a pizza for finnishing college... All because of the fact that he was a boy. My mother is thinking they were the better parents to me than to my brother. "He always got jealous because we treated you better." No, he would complain whenever I would be treated well. I never complained when he was because it was futile. They always sided up with him. Always. He never had to do any chores either.
I’m so sorry. Reminds me of a story someone posted online where they worked at a school and a mother and four kids, two boys, two girls come in. The mother allows them to pick one toy each. One girl picks a pink and fluffy stuffy, the boys pick arrows and the other girl picks a dragon. The mother takes the dragon out if her hands, saying it’s for boys. The girl instead grabs a green dog and the mother refuses and tells her those are toys “Gay Girls” play with. The girl sobs and the mother leaves after paying to the stunned cashier.
Tomáš Baršváry I mean it would be better to have a variety of babies to account for differences in how they are viewed. But it’s worth remembering that they are observing the behaviour of the adults not the kids. And they do show several adults being tested.
When I have my kids the *only* difference I'm making between them as far as things like toys, clothing ect will be with their diapers. & that's down to a purely a physical/biological difference. Because boys & girls do wet their diapers in different areas. Apart from that no differences - if I have a girl who wants to play with trucks then she can play with trucks. If I have a boy who wants to wear a skirt going with me to the shops then I'll pop him in a kilt. Just so long as they're confident within their own skins then I'll be happy.
Being a boy or girl is a natural thing that we can't change, but this video is clearly pandering to the people who would believe that gender is something that is based on nurture instead of nature. This video, while I don't care what toys a child plays with, is clearly trying to prove the opposite point of biology, by having the children play with the toys that are considered taboo for them. While there are boys that play with girl toys, they are just the minority in the group. Often times boys will choose the toy that are commonly addressed as boy toys, and girls will choose the same way for their gender.
I also think they left out the control group here. Boys dressed as boys and girls dressed as girls. I'd be interested to see if the kids would be more interested. It may be just me, but I think most of the kids in this video look quite bored with the misgendered items. That is, until the boy dressed as a girl insisted on playing with the spin top rather than paying attention to the puppet.
I always loved "boy" toys (trucks, pirate stuff, building things, etc) and my brother always loved barbies and cooking toys. People would always get is the opposite, because of our genders, and we would inevitably switch 😂😂
I played with toy racecars when I was little. Me and my female cousin both got a toy carwash roller coaster for Christmas, same color and everything and we grew up just fine lol.
I think the subject of raising your child gender neutral/not falling for our gender stereotypes is important, and that we should let kids decide what they want to wear, and what they want to play with/as. HOWEVER, from the beginning I didn’t understand why they referred to them as the opposite gender, and called them different names. This is unrelated, because these are not their real names! And also, it makes it seem like they are (temporarily) forcing their children to act completely different from their original gender/sex. The whole point is letting the child choose.
I think the reverse gender thing is to show how the kids responded to being handed toys that are not "for them", and how the adults rationalized the childrens' preferences before and after they knew the real gender.
It's about the adults and not the children. They hand them different toys and treat them different based on the gender they think they are. Also they is no "acting like they gender" at this time of age. They are just babies they are not aware of what they are.
As a kid I played with toy trains, cars, and sports balls which are considered boys toys, and I also played with dolls sometimes, baby dolls, and horses which are considered girls toys. I am a 14 year old girl currently and I think my parents allowing me to do what I wanted really helped me. I also hang out with the boys at school and because of that, I haven't really gotten the attitude most girls my age have. I feel like being ok with playing with anything helps just as you grow older as well so you can be open minded for your kids and maybe be a better person.
An interesting, but maybe incomplete experiment. It would be more interesting leaving alone the babies with the toys and see which kind of toy they choose.
I think you're projecting your own thoughts. The child looked pretty interested. Maybe a little tense when the woman made noises - which is understandable since the child didn't know the woman well.
There is an 18 year gap between my little sister and I and she had a huge range of girl and boy toys growing up. Dinosaurs, Star Wars toys, Hot Wheels cars, Barbies, pink plush animals, my little pony stuff etc. She is now 8 years old and is pretty much only interested in plushies, dolls, and videogames. I don't really have a point, but let your kids play with whatever they want.
I was a girl who took all my older brother's toys. Then when I was 11 and my brother 16, my sister was born. My brother would take her to the toy store and say you can have anything you like but make sure it's something I can play with also so she had to choose boy toys. I bought her a bob the builder toy set with a real metal miniature hammer because I didn't like how the brat dolls were dressed so provocatively. I did buy her a cabbage patch doll & a toy Corning Ware set but she wasn't interested. She at 26 is an engineer today. As for me who took my older brother's toys, I'm the only woman on an other wise all male trading desk.
I love how open-minded the adults are when the gender of the children are reveled. They don't get defensive about their previous behavior, which is quite refreshing.
brits are very open minded and accepting lol
brits are also mostly non religious compared to the majority of america, which that can have an effect on traditional gender roles and how strict can they be on what girls and boys can and cannot do
Ratio
I agree
@@evanator1237 When the ratio backfires 😎
Obviously their are more to add to both categories but people are trying to stop what these people think
yes! preach it
Well said👏
As a girl with 2 brothers, I played with all the "boy's toys." Yet, my brothers still didn't play dolls with me nearly as often, and I had to turn to my mom to play. I think boys refusing to play with girls toys is a far more significant barrier these days, as girl's toys are far less likely to be used across genders
Yes. Boys very early on in life tend to find ways to self-differentiate from girls.
My brother's played dolls.
And also boys toys are more interesting
@@pratishdhiman4332 It's true--toys that are perceived to be for girls are often the softer, more passive toys. Boys get the toys that induce more active/intellectual play
@@brynnhill8848 And boys will be judged by society of they will play with girlish toys
Op Mister Boy toys enforce intellectual improvement, girl toys improve social behaviour. Good parents give both to their kids.
Just saying
Op Mister I agree 100%
Pedro Franca
But this video is the direct reflection of cultural Marxism.

Thank you so much for existing
yeah, this is awesome! and if one or more of you were married to someone of the same sex, it wouldn't be because of the toys.

There's a Norwegian documental that talks about it, "the gender equality paradox", a little long but very interesting.
that's is why i don't believe in this experiment.
Yes, the babies are not choosing. They are being taught. I.E. Brainwashed.
trust You’ve missed the point. You’re making a strong argument for the wrong thing. Always read the question carefully! 😂
I work with pre-school aged children. I recognized that the girls wanted to play with dinosaurs and the boys wanted to play with My Little Pony toys, kids do not give two shits what you think if it's a "boy" or "girl" toy.

Billy Fowler
Dude, you're a fucking idiot.

Roboten Faffa GOD LIGHT SABERS WERE AWSOME WHEN I WAS A KID. I USED TO HAVE ALOT OF THEM! (Im a women)
I remember my mom telling me I liked ponies because it was part of my personality. But now I realized she only did that because of the stereotype.
“Why we got so many weak men nowadays”
So you think feminity is inherently weak? You think playing with dolls will make boys weak?
Stef In Canada - thank you. Well said..
1MaxN the point is that the adults weren't regarding the children's preferences and, instead, giving what they wanted/thought was appropriate

And Marnie was a girl but she liked the robot.
My brother when he was little played with cars, trucks and had a favorite brown teddy bear.
I am a girl. I played with cars and dolls, and also LEGO, I did not care what I played with as long as it entertained me. I am 12 years old now.
I bet you turned out just fine 🙃
Why? Because the boys clothes fit her better
She plays with both boys and girls toys. Why? Because she’s a child and all toys are fun. She doesn’t know the difference and she doesn’t care.
How old is she?
"She?" Did you just assume your baby's gender?
Casarez Family Videos
Oh dear I guess I did. That’s ok she can tell me different when she’s older lol.
I gave my children both kinds of toys, and the boy was attracted to toys that included movement (like cars) whereas the girl was not interested in them at all, and preferred dolls in an unquestionable manner. The boy played with some dolls too, but only by taking them for a ride in a dolls-stroller...
(I myself like both kinds of toys, so I was cooperative in both cases.)
So all these experiments...

I like how the parents are accepting it instead of pretending there isn’t a stereotype
Yes!, same here !
Boys/Girls should be given the same toys & they shouldn't be about their genitals.
-the whole idea is gross if u think about it.
Mary Light I have an 18 month old girl and a nine-month-old boy and they play with the same toys. My boy really likes baby dolls so I bought him one. So then he has his own baby doll that his sister won't try to take away from him.
Mary Light I agree. But its not just genitals that separate boys and girls. It's their brains too. They work and mature differently
@@irrelevance3859 As the video said, how they are raised has a lot to do with it. And, despite all their differences, it is completely impossible to tell a female and male brain apart.
I didn't have this problem as a child. I got to select my own toys.
I'm a guy and I loved barbie dolls. If I have children, I will let them play with whatever they want.
I’m a tomboy. I hate “girly”stuff, especially the color pink. I love action figures and cartoons targeted to boys.
Dear BBC, thanks for such an interesting experiment! I have translated it into Simplified Chinese and have the ASS subtitle file. Would you like to add it as an option for the viewers? Please let me know.
Did Soros pay you?
I don't care which baby I get, I'm putting them on the car and driving them around
Kai A. Same
No need to avoid specific colors.
In other words, it is balancing itself out.

Heck, I even asked for boy toys in my happy meals at McDonald’s
Bcos McDonald does this shit. "boy's toys" are always better.
I would've just been like: Which one do you want?
how about you do the experiment in a non biased way?
let the children in a toy store and leave them ALONE so we see their preferences. how about that?
the point of this video is for the adults to realise that they are stereotyping kids based on their biological sex not about the kids' preferences
When I was younger I would have small cars and try to fit a Barbie doll inside them because I didn’t have a proper car for it 😂
Interesting idea but I think it would have been better to see how the same people treat boys vs girls rather than only letting them interact with one child
Personally I'd be more inclined to give the babies softer toys regardless of their gender. I would probably think that babied are more drawn to soft and cuddly object because they're soothing.
I actually gave a baby boy a beautifull soft doll as a birthday present but i think his parents didn't liked it
having work with young children have long let go of these stereotypes. i let them play with whatever they please, and be free . as long as they arnt hurting themselves or each other

DarksideIsTheNewBlack hello fellow Gavin McGinnis fan
DarksideIsTheNewBlack that's the point: to show what interests them is not necessarily determined by biological factors, as they'd be fine with all kinds of toys, but, instead, by people who, like those adults, impose stereotypes into the kids
Pedro Franca when .03% is trans, I think it’s safe to assume you have a “cis” gendered kid.
And the point of this study completely went over your head. lmao.
Steven Glansburg I am not saying that you'd have to be transgender to like behaviours society deems ss for the opposite gender, that's not my point and I believe neither is the video's
Man, babies will play with whatever you give them. Thats the whole point of being a baby, explore the world around them.
That baby looks adorable in that dress
Also this does not mean we have to throw out completely conventional gender ideas.
ya'll need to grow up this isn't even that bad, the kids are just playing with toys chill
You will be able to let go of a lot anger when you stop judging other people for how they choose to raise their kids.
This is why my son has a doll. I was adamant he learn to be gentle with animals and babies. But also has puzzles and other things to engage his brain. Same stuff I've used in my pre-K classrooms.
"be whoever they are"
Its not about that its about encouraging neural development at an early age gosh
It is one thing to offer a little girl a truck to play with, or offer a boy a set of toy dishes. But to change their attire and give them new names - attire and names opposite to what they are - brings about immense confusion to the child. Shame on you, BBC, for promoting such confusion in little ones.
they are babies, how could this have any influence on them?
When my little brother was young his favorite movies were Barbie movies and he loved the color pink but that didn’t make him any less of a boy and it still doesn’t

they should let the kid choose by themselves without anyone influencing then
I played with the same toys that were passed down to me by my 8 years older brother except his G.I Joe dolls that I didn't want, I had Barbie dolls instead of that.
Clothes are clothes and toys are toys.

I hate to think that “boy toys” are good for brain development, and you were deprived of that
I’m so sorry.
And that example is an example of bad parenting that led to envy. It doesn't prove gender differences don't exist.
I am sure 2 children are enough to conduct a comprehensive experiment.
We mustn’t attempt to rewire a million years of human evolution. Let Mother Nature happen.

I played with both toys as a child then age 5 bullied because I had a doll
It's more accepted for girls to play with boy's toys, for some reason it doesn't work the other way around.
Id play pretend with legos when I was a kid and make dinosaurs out of them.
Yall trippin
I remember loving cars when I was a girl, and also Barbies. But my parents threw the car to the trash.
Jo moody what's wrong with playing with both?
As a kid I played with toy trains, cars, and sports balls which are considered boys toys, and I also played with dolls sometimes, baby dolls, and horses which are considered girls toys. I am a 14 year old girl currently and I think my parents allowing me to do what I wanted really helped me. I also hang out with the boys at school and because of that, I haven't really gotten the attitude most girls my age have. I feel like being ok with playing with anything helps just as you grow older as well so you can be open minded for your kids and maybe be a better person.
Like all of the best scientific experiments, one data set consisting of two points with several variables and no control group. Whew, lad.
Guys, everything is a toy to a baby! X'D
An interesting, but maybe incomplete experiment. It would be more interesting leaving alone the babies with the toys and see which kind of toy they choose.
