Wow I never noticed it was missing - I had tested netflix for the HDR but only actually use it on the aTV. Looking it up, they only licenced it for the 19 models so yep you are right, that is a big deal.
I have the 2019 Pro and rolling with just the standard 16GB of internal storage, I started running out of space. Like you, I pretty much just use it for Plex and directplay my locally stored content from NAS to my home theatre. As time goes on and you download apps here and there, 16GB goes quickly. So a small but important feature - the Pro offers two USB-A ports so I have the ability to plug in an extra 3.5” external drive for additional storage. I didn’t anticipate running out of storage (my original intention was running Plex only, but once Android was throwing up low storage notifications and closing apps b/c of low storage, I was glad I had the USB-A ports.
@CO Guy Stuff you would have to go with higher tier (SanDisk Extreme or higher) microSD cards to get comparable read/write speeds. but for me I would have to spend money on a card vs plugging in a 3.5" external HDD, which I already have, and when you think about the extra money you have to spend for the microSD, the price difference between the Pro and the Stick is minimized.
I have the 2017 shield pro, model P2897 and i absolute have loved it since the day I bought it, except for the original remote which you covered. The model I purchased also came with the game controller. Both sucked, but went in the trash. I bought the new remote and have been fairly happy. I use mine with a Synology 2 bay NAS that my entire Movie, TV Show and Music collection resides on. I have literally (seriously) tried every possible video and audio player that is available for the Shield. I discovered a free Video player Called Nova Video Player, and I was immediately sold! This app is free, it automatically indexed all my video files, including full descriptions, category, year, movie/tv show poster etc. Absolutely amazing app. I use Kodi for my music. I'm about 60% satisfied with Kodi. Though its interface is more complicated than necessary. I really wish there was a simpler music player, but it has all the features that I want, like reading the mp3 tag info, album art, categorizing artist, album, etc...
Correction! @1:39 The 2019 model is expandable on the internal storage. By simply plugging in a SSD or a HDD external hard drive And simply selecting make this drive a internal drive. Which will marry the drive you select (mine is a 4 TB) with the Nvidia shield. If you select external it’ll make it readable through other devices. 2017 model can do the same!🥂
I’m using WD PR4100 for Plex, so I guess I don’t need to get the pro version to stream 4K True HD/Atmos, correct? Providing that I own atmos capable TV and Receiver.
I only use Kodi 2017 is more than enough, right? the 2019 upscale AI also works on this application? I think in Basic mode the quality is the same. given that the last model was released 4 years ago, I ask if it is not better to take the cheaper one, keep your money and buy the next one, which may be released, hoping in 1 or 2 years
Yes AI Upscaling works for every app. If the 2017 does what you need, then yes save your money, if the upscaling doesn't matter to you and you don't need the other features
If I want to stream games from my desktop to my TV upstairs, will I be kicking myself if I don't get the pro? Does that extra Gig of ram make a difference? If not, I think the cheaper one sounds good
It's Logitech's harmony remote - Search Amazon or Google for "Logitech Harmony Companion" remote & hub - ain't cheap but absolutely brilliant with a shield 👍
Another great, great video. My favorite video up scaler are the defunct oppos with their Dolby Vision upconversion. They do different things but when I can compare I'd prefer the Dolby Vision upconversion and this is basically juicing the contrast by doing fabricating meta-data so scene by scene you can juice the contrast. The oppos will not only juice HDR to DV but standard definition discs to DV. However the oppos only work on discs or disc images. The new 2019 shields work on a greater variety of sources including a lot of streaming, so it's a great complement to the oppo disc capability. I will stick a finger in your eye on your characterization of Dolby Vision which is kind of the standard line from most sources. Dolby Vision is vastly superior to straight HDR. Yes HDR is amazing and I can watch it and be completely satisfied, but when you even do the up conversion to Dv from HDR the the difference is dramatic. As far as the general capabilities of Dolby Vision I think they become obvious when you watch a 4K HDR disk of an animated movie versus the streaming Dolby Vision copy; it's just not even close as the Dolby Vision just really pops. why am I seeing things differently? Well that's the difference here with Dolby Vision upconversion you are only as good as your settings for SDR, HDR, and Dolby Vision; one really can't compare without great settings/calibration for all of these modes. thank you once again for bringing attention to the Nvidia 2019 units AI upscaling. Others elsewhere have been very lukewarm to it. And for the record I like the highest level of AI scaling juice as much as possible, but agree the middle setting won't disappoint Even the most ardent purist. thx and my tv is lg 2017 OLED. LG is known for excellent Dolby Vision performance, and other TV technology types with Dolby Vision or even Sony oleds with the exact same panel may not show as great a difference favoring Dolby Vision.
@@COGuyStuff Thanks for the confirmation.. I believe this device will have no challenge in playing Dolby Atmos True HD / DTS-X True HD. Can you please confirm
Thanks for the info. I recently purchased the Sony X900H 85 and was hoping to use the native apps for most of my viewing, but I noticed a couple of issues with either existing or unavailable apps. As such I'm now using an Amazon Fire Stick to 1) access AT&T TV Now for sports and other live/network programming and 2) Disney+ and AP for Dolby Atmos content (the native apps on the Sony only support 5.1 for some reason - Netflix is the opposite with the 2). I believe the Shield has all these apps and would support DA, but I'm curious if you'd reccommend purchasing one just for the AI upscale with AT&T TV?
I'm still so impressed with my old 2015 model which I use in bedroom & a 2017 in lounge. I simply just bought the 2019 remote & 2017 gamepad (as the original remote is terrible as you stated & the 2017 game controller I find much better than its older 2015 pad. Great video btw thank you as Im looking to get the 2019 tube model & wasn't sure of the difference s 👍
I don't play games on my Shield however I've received a notification for not enough storage and that I need to expand. So I've googled and the reason was because of Kodi/Plex. I have almost 10.000 movies/TV shows on my NAS and Kodi/Plex needs to download all the movies information and posters, backgrounds etc.. So people with a massive local collection need the Pro as well :)
Nope. As I clearly said, the new tv version has a microsd card slot. As far as that goes, it can handle exponentially more than the pro as far as internal chip space.
And it’s not plex just kodi. Plex serves it all from the server on demand. I wish it stored the metadata locally though, scrolling loading would be faster.
@@COGuyStuff, OK didn't know about the micro sd slot. Do you know if it stores metadata locally for Kodi? PC does scroll more smoothly that the shield.

If Dolby Vision and questionable AI upscaling aren't required by users the 2017 Pro is a better device than the Tube.
