  • How to pronounce 50 European city names in British and American English. Many people mispronounce the names of cities and other places when they speak English. (good idea this fast (normal) english parenthesis in black and white even if the reason here wasn't really educational :) )
In french when it's differently written and/or when pronouciation is very different:
      Edinburgh is Édimbourg [edɛ̃buʁ]
Brussels is Bruxelles BUT the "x" must (or should) be pronounced as "ss" (the last s is not prnounced as usual in french)
      Geneva is Genève [ʒənɛv]
      Venice is Venise [vəniz]
      Copenhagen is Copenhague [
      Warsaw is Varsovie [vaʁ.sɔ.vi]
      Cracow is Cracovie [kʁa.kɔ.vi]
Kyiv is Kiev [kjɛf] or [kjɛv]
      Moscow is Moscou [mɔsku]
😊😊 the english pronounciation of Naples is very troubling 😊
Hamburg isn't it where Kennedy said "i am a..."?

Unless you learn another language, it can be difficult. Even then, learning French doesn't really prepare one for understanding that the letter J is most commonly very like Y or I. And then there's Spanish, and I guess Portuguese.
I wonder about our pronunciation of Trojan.
Can you really distinguish between Australian and English accents? A lot of poms can't.

Hey Max, I'm from Birmingham, Alabama, and we actually do pronounce the 'H' here. However, I am aware that the Birmingham in England does not have its H pronounced. I would imagine many Americans who are used to hearing/saying the name of the US city might miss pronounce the English city by including the H.

    • @EnglishwithMax
      @EnglishwithMax  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing.
That reminds of something similar in Australia. There is a town called Exmouth in the UK and in Australia. In the UK the "ou" is a schwa ("Ex-mehth"), but in Australia the "mouth" is pronounced like the part of the face :D ("Ex-mowth").
And you don't want to know what we've done to some French names 🤣 .
E.g. Sans Souci -> San Suzy
