I'm seeing a lot more praise for this film in recent years (rightfully so, IMO), versus the sort of _"meh"_ reception it got around the time it was released.
As I think another commenter pointed out, I think people were expecting a different kind of film. And now it can be appreciated on its own merits.

Part of the problem is once you have a movie like The Sixth Sense, then everyone is looking for that type of ending. The Sixth Sense caught everyone off guard and it's a mind-blowing twist. Now everyone picks at every detail of Shyamalan's movies trying to guess the twist.
Plus, Signs is a very different type of movie and the twist doesn't change everything about the movie you just watched. I think for those reasons people thought it was a dud. For me, all the symbolism in Signs and how Shyamalan tells the story makes it a much more satisfying movie altogether. For example, once you watch Sixth Sense, watching it again makes it a very different movie. You can watch Signs multiple times and find more signs and themes in it. It's one of my comfort movies......I just love everything about it.

I don't know if you go back to see if new comments come in, but here goes...
Shyamalan was born in India, his family moved to the US when he was 6 wks old. He grew up in Pennsylvania, attending first a Catholic grade school, then an Episcopalian college, so he was aways the "outsider", even looked down upon by teachers.
Signs was filmed in Pennsylvania; the 1st day of filming was the day after 9/11, & they held a memorial before rolling cameras. Recall one of the planes, likely the one headed for the Capitol Bldg or the White House, was brought down in a Pennsylvania field.
The scene where Ray is getting ready to drive off leaving the alien in his pantry was shot just after Shyamalan's grandfather had passed away, while things were still in process for Shyamalan's family.
It's no wonder Shyamalan produced such a sober and respectful story, with family at the heart.
The big deal about Shyamalan's films is that he was accused of being the moviemaker who made films with the ridiculous weird twist, like it was shtick. I don't think people really got what he was doing. Shyamalan didn't do mysteries, horror films, etc; he makes spiritual movies. The content is about spiritual matters. Yeah, he might use genres Americans are familiar with, but he was in a way telling parables.
Rod Serling did the same thing, writing screenplays for the Twilight Zone that used science fiction or time travel or ghosts or war or even cultural depictions (there are several episodes set in Appalachia), but a bigger story was told dressed in those styles. Serling came back from WWII having seen horrible things, so wrote episodes of Twilight Zone as a platform for what he wanted to say.
Shyamalan does the same in the way only an outsider can in reflecting human beings back at themselves.
No, Shyamalan doesn't stick a twist into the genre of movie he makes; he tells a story that's fully present from the start but lets it inhabit a genre to make it palatable to Americans. Sixth Sense was not a ghost movie. Signs is not a monster/SciFi movie. Unbreakable is not a superhero movie. But they speak to something beyond our definitions of "reality" at the same time they are recognized as familiar, even with the unexpected twist.

Growing up this was one of my favorite movies. It was nice seeing someone react to it. It did have great acting. The best part of this movie in my opinion was the concept that everything had a purpose. The brother losing his job was so he could be with them, and have his bat on the wall. The daughters problem with water was for the alien. The son’s asthma kept him safe from the poison. The wife died to tell the brother to swing away (which is why he lost his job and how they remembered the bat). So many things like that! I love movies that come full circle.

I really liked everyone's performance in this one. Overall it wasn't received as well because lot of people were expecting a big twist at the end, but now that some time has passed, it's easier to appreciate the film's story on its own merits instead of comparing it to other Shymalan movies.
Definitely recommend "The Sixth Sense" as the (excellent) film that made Shyamalan and Haley Joel Osment household names. While it's got suspense and some scary bits, the horror element is much more subtle and thought-provoking, and the story's driven by very likable characters. And then there's another great HJO movie, Spielberg's "A.I."

    • @sleepcrime
      @sleepcrime 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It wasn't that people were expecting a twist that the movie wasn't received well, it was that the plot was overall a little dopey. It's basically about a man rediscovering his faith in the Christian God, and a science fiction movie that's anti-science (or at least ignorant of it). I've heard a lot of criticism for this movie over the years and its never once been about a perceived lack of a twist in the end.

I get that art is subjective but the amount of hate his movies getj in particular is so confusing to me. They're well made, good production value, great casting/acting and anyone who says this dude makes horrible movies are simply haters who watched the Sixth Sense and feel like he hasn't lived up to his potential.

This is the first time one of your reactions really got me to tears.
“Dad, what happened? Did someone save me?”
Kimmy: (in tears) Yeah, your momma did…
Wow. I’ve never thought of it in this way.
I’ve always interpreted that it could mean Graham saved him, or Graham is thinking now of maybe how God did or “someone” or some force out there did save him. But Kimmy is spot on and I’ve never thought of it… to think that maybe in some way, if not coincidence, that their mum’s last words were the words she gave them to help save them. To think that even though she died and her death broke their family, that she didn’t leave without giving them something that would save them all is so powerful. And I guess this got me more emotional than the idea of Graham or some higher power saving them because I think it speaks just so much to the power of a mother’s love, of their care to protect but also their unique and special intuition for others. To think that her last instincts, while non-sensical at the time, were in some intuitively driven way linked to something that was in service of protecting her family is god damned heartwarming and beautiful.
    Amazing reaction! 💙

I love this movie, I think the directing and acting were masterful. There are so many little details you catch with multiple viewings. Even the title “Signs” has a double meaning. The crop circles and lights, etc. are the surface level signs, but the deeper meaning comes from the signs of fate and miracles that Graham realizes throughout the film, culminating in his epiphany at the end when he realizes the meaning of “swing away” and that Morgan’s asthma is what saved him from the poison.
My favorite detail is in the beginning when the dog pees on the floor, Morgan says he’s sick, and Graham says to call the Dr. and Morgan says he doesn’t treat animals. Graham just says, “he’ll know what to do.” Later, when Graham goes to visit Ray, you see the mailbox with his name and it says Veterinarian. Graham didn’t want to see the Vet because it’s the man responsible for his wife’s death.

The "Signs" didn't refer to the crop circles. This isn't an alien movie, it's a film about a Preacher's faith. Joaquin was a failure as a baseball player, but he wasn't given that power for baseball. He would use it to save his nephew. The little girl drank lots of water so that one day Joaquin could use it to save the boy. He was given asthma to protect his lungs from the alien's poison, all these things are "signs" that point to something more.

This movie really rewards repeat viewings. Watching it again I noticed the dust outline of the cross on Merrill's wall, suggesting he took it down after his wife's death. Or how Merrill says he'll call Dr. Crawford about their dog, Houdini, and Morgan says "he doesn't treat animals," because Merrill wouldn't call the vet since he was the person who hit his wife. Or that both times the alien's "talking" was heard, the whole family was touching.

Guy in the car is the Director M. Night Shyamalan. He places himself in his films a lot. Honestly, looking back at this film its like an all star cast now. Gibson, Phoenix, Culkin, Breslin. All well known.

Good reaction ladies, you guys do know that with crop circles they have determined that some are man made but there are many many that have baffled scientists as far as how they were made. Very complex geometric patterns that are literally perfect down to the millimeter. They also cannot determine how the crops are laid flat without breaking the stalks, with corn fields, and with other fields the crops are not permanently damaged, and with boards and ropes that would not be possible.

I hadn't realised that the wee girl was Abigail Breslin. This film has become a bit of a classic. I know there is no redeeming Mel now but what an actor he is. Joaquins star has risen as far as Mels has fallen in intervening years.

I actually really liked this one since I was a lil kid, a home invasion by aliens really freaked me out back then. I do believe it is an underrated film from Shyamalan, better than his later-2000s work.

    Great reaction! Love this movie!
I notice new things every time I watch it, like how the news cast says that the aliens left quickly leaving their wounded behind - hence the desperation and vicious attack of the alien at the end. I also love how we see Meryl struggling with purpose and considering leaving the farm at the recruitment office.
    Subscribed! Have a great day!

A tremendously underrated movie and it's been bizarrely criticised over the years I've noticed when the name of the movie has cropped up on movie forums and other websites I've noticed. I've been a big movie fan for thirty years and this is up there in my top few movies personally. Great reaction.

I WILL NEVER FORGET GETTING TO GET MY MOM TO TAKE MY BROTHER AND I TO THE DRIVE IN TO SEE THIS...SHE WAS TERRIFIED BUT SHE HAD SO MUCH FUN WITH US!! SHE IS SCARED OF CERTAIN LIFETIME MOVIES AND WAS SCARED OF THE MUNSTERS WHEN SGHE WAS GROWING UP IF THAT TELLS YOU ANYTHING...BUT SOMEHOW SHE MANAGED TO SURVIVE THE ENTIRE MOVIE THANK GOD! I don’t think I’ve ever had more fun in movie going experience...Maybe seeing Twister at that same Drive In and a tornado ended up coming through our area (the wind was picking up like crazy!) We had no idea there was a tornado because we live in West Virginia where tornadoes just don’t happen! But on the way home we saw buildings roofs on the side of the road trees snapped at 90 degree angles or massive branches that seemed to have been on the road previously but cleared off by someone.
WHEN I WENT TO GO SEE CASPER AND POCAHONTAS AS A DOUBLE FEATURE (AT THE LOCAL DOLLAR THEATER)
OR WHEN MY MOM BROUGHT MY BROTHER AND I TO THAT SAME DRIVE IN (seems like all of my best memories were at the drive in or the dollar theater two movies for the price of one can’t beat that) TO MEET A FRIEND OF HERS AND HER DAUGHTER AND SON TO SEE ANACONDA AND LIAR LIAR. THAT WAS THEE FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH A “SCARY” MOVIE AND I LOVED IT! Now had I seen Scream or something more super natural I probably wouldn’t have given horror movies a chance until much later in life but instead the summer of 6th grade going into 7th I somehow convinced my dad to rent my friends and I a bunch of horror movies sometimes 2 times a week even. And up until I saw Darkness Falls (the tooth fairy I think was another name for it) in like 8th grade I didn’t get scared from any of them really. Darkness Falls, The Ring, and the devil from Passion Of The Christ were the only films to make me sleep with a light on in my pre-teen and early teen years haha... and of course Paranormal Activity I didn’t sleep very well that night I saw it in theaters but after that I was fine and can watch it again and find it stupid. But that first viewing not knowing anything going into it because it was opening night I was petrified thee entire movie thinking anything could pop out and scare the begeezus out of us at any moment had my anxiety at an all time high lol. And then the fact that you never saw anything later that night my imagination kept me awake for almost the entire night lol.
