Cooking King Salmon in the Whole Foods Parking Lot (They Caught Me)

- In this episode, I attempt (and fail slightly) to cook a pan seared king salmon fillet on my tailgate in the parking lot of Whole Foods. I hit a few unexpected bumps in the road, including being approached by the Whole Foods security guard.

A lot of people in the comments seem personally attacked and/or offended by this video. I will admit here as I did in the video; it wasn’t a wise idea to cook in a parking garage and I’ll accept the fact that it was a decision lacking thorough foresight. That being said, we all make mistakes. Hindsight is 20/20 and I never had any bad intentions. I apologize if my actions triggered you. Have a nice day!

Kudos to Whole Foods. They hired a cool security guard. That salmon looked pretty amazing. You should probably cook outdoors - fresher air, better scenery, and less Karens.

A Karen is someone who is going to call the manager and have you fired for doing your job, not someone who reports an open fire in a parking structure

Thanks to the Security Guard for not being a bully, like they are at Walmart! Also, Jonathan there are probably security cameras all around that you did not see. So, it may not have been someone that reported you, but rather they saw you on one of their cameras!
OMG…who camps/cooks in a parking garage??? Every camper knows even at Walmart parking lot you don’t break out your camping gear or lawn chairs! Simply amazing that you did this!

The salmon sounds like it was tasty. Residual heat cooked. Yep, not wise cooking in a garage… In this day and age, a lot of people opt to let security do the talking. Cause ya never know how that person will react… but the security guy was cool and handled it very well. Keep on doing you! 🛻
similar thing happened in my town, but there was a slight gas leak in the car park that you couldnt smell and the gas tank ended up with the flames exploding. Guy ended up getting 3rd degree burns. Thats prob the only negative I would take away with cooking in an indoor car park, but yeah guess someone could have just spoken to you directly rather than complain.
You are an outstanding cook! I swear you know how to make things that look so good and I'm sure taste delicious.
As far as your hair, it looks good either way but I LOVE it short. God knows it's so much easier and cooler to deal with.

I'd be pretty upset too if I was holding bags of groceries and a toddler in tow, and all the sudden fire alarm goes off and here comes the overhead sprinklers...oh, and my convertible had its top down...

A fire alarm doesn't automatically trigger the sprinklers. That's just Hollywood.

@@jasonlee595 Fire sprinklers are set off by heat from a fire. If a sprinkler is activated, a water flow device will activate the alarm. If an alarm is activated by a pull station, a heat detector or a smoke detector (SD), the alarm goes off but the sprinklers do not. That's why you can have a false alarm because someone pulled an alarm station as a joke or sneaked a cigarette in a hospital bathroom and set off a SD. If Jonathan had a flare up big enough to set off a sprinkler, not only is he a bad cook but just that one sprinkler would be activated, not the whole parking garage. Still, not the best idea. :)

Normally I would say it's silly to be kicked out of a parking lot but this is a parking garage and you could possibly set off the fire system. I typed this before you mentioned it in the video.

What lens do you use??
My main lens that I use is the Tamron 17-28 f/2.8 E Mount and I also use a 24-70 f/2.8 G Master

That was a cool security guard. Open fire in an underground structure is a bit risky, anywhere. The people who reported you probably didn't want to approach you since it could mean their own safety...I mean, who knows, right? Salmon looked delicious!

More people should stand up against what is wrong these days. If you dont put a child in his place once in a while they start to think they can do whatever they want.
Come back up to Oregon this fall for some excellent fall Chinook (King) salmon fishing starting August 1st. Bays will be your best bet early, but when the fall rains come (hopefully), the salmon start heading upstream to spawn and you can catch really nice fish from the bank. The southern Oregon coast starting at Brookings all the way up to the Tillamook area has many fishable areas. You might consider going on a guided trip to guarranty a successful trip.
Skin on! Get the pan hot and cook the skin until crispy. Then turn the heat way down, flip the filet and cook the rest. A Japanese chef showed me that.
It’s iron cast it will finish perfect I turn my burner off after I flip it for fish

If you were cooking in an outside parking lot, I don't think people would have thought twice, but cooking in an underground parking lot was not smart. So don't blame Karen for this one 😂
I couldn’t hear the security guard completely, but I would have thought of it being in a parking garage with the open gas flame that was my main concern. At least the guard was cool and wasn’t a you know what. Lesson learned, but at least you got to eat your salmon while it was hot, lol

An outdoors man you are not! Why wouldn’t you go to a park…an outdoor park with trees and fresh air? It’s almost funny to watch some of the things you try. It always appears as though your videos are more important then you actually enjoying the places you drive too. It’s all about making money with your videos…you might try learning to like the places you visit..the scenery instead of stopping to shoot a video then moving on.

Some places also have fire suppression systems that can be set off by smoke. The salmon looked yummy. Outdoor cooking is always the best anyway. Take care, God bless and keep having fun.
Looks yummy with salmon or steelhead I do lemon juice.... slices of lemon on top lemon pepper a dash of salt a few slices of butter and some garlic or fresh peeled garlic cloves and put it in a foil pan on the barbecue I've never had it not come out perfect

My guess is security was watching you the whole time on cameras, but let it go until someone complained. Grocery shopping is not at the top of my favorite chores. When we were told to leave once when a bomb threat was called, all I could think was hateful thoughts to the idiot who called it in. Glad it ended safely for you.

Lol I noticed it right away. Hey you should leave skin on , I know I live in anchorage Alaska and I fish all 5 species of salmon and eat salmon lol. If after grilling you do not need to eat the skin but you can has the most of the protein, omega3 fatty acids. But grill on buddy.

Oh and you want to leave the skin on it to you cook it skin side down that way you're not charged with killing the bottom of the fish and you never flip it you just leave it that way till flakes perfectly

Jonathan, Jonathan.....There are some things you just don't do, having an open flame in an enclosed space, where there could possibly be other flammable fumes lingering. You should have taken all that to a local park and we all could have enjoyed proper prep of the meal. My kids are your age, and they do silly stuff too. Continue with your adventures, be safe out there.
I think ignorance and entitlement has amplified in todays youth. Yes I was both when younger but was more humble as well. Humble is almost non existent.

I no longer comment much on YT videos but want to say that I disagree with some folks. We don't know who contacted the store security. Not every concerned citizen is a Karen. It's entirely possible that he/she was immediately concerned about open flame in an enclosed space. Common sense and critical thinking are good skills to have :)
