Thank You SO MUCH for this! I've worn out several copies of the debut LP thru the decades. Always been one of our little 'inner circle's' faves. Long Live SU TISSUE!!!
Inspired to chime in. Way back on or around March 1979, my friend's band had its opening gig. Down in Long Beach. Now, this was not a legal venue with a bar. It was a tiny practice studio near Magnolia Ave. that three bands got together and made flyers. Voila! Instant weekend gig. Opening act was the Reactionaries (that was my friend's band. It later regrouped and got fame as The Minute Men. Closing act was South Bay's long-time favorite, The Alleycats. It's cut on the _Yes L.A._ record (a response to the No New York LP) on Dangerhouse Records, _Too Much Junk got lots of airplay on Rodney on the Rocks. In between these acts was the _Suburban Lawns._ Su Tissue stole the show and haunted the tiny studio with her shrill, possessed wails. She made Wednesday of the Addams Family seem like an inviting Sunday-comic in comparison. All the video footage shown is great, but it doesn't give justice to her presence. She was able to focus all the energyand redistributed to the audience of about 20 people. It was from her performance that I learned their word _catatonic._ But it should have been atomic catatonic. It was this show that I vowed never to watch another arena band and focus on the talent that was right here in my backyard. Life changing. After her performance, I do remember Su Tissue talking to her bandmates, and she squeaked out a "Thank you" when I told her how much I enjoyed the show. Yes, _Unable_ (put it in a bag) was the standout of their set (or at least that is the song I remember well after watching three amazing bands), and _Gidget Goes to Hell_ had not yet been released as a single, but I recall that was their closing number. When it did get released, it got a ton of airplay on KROQ (maybe it was still on AM too as the ROCKS, but I forget when KROQ went just FM. By late 1979, KROQ, started a playlist format that made it just another radio station, but from around 1977 to mid-1979, DJ's had the freedom to play whatever that chose) I digress. The greedy and possessive people associated with the Gidget Movie Franchise threatened legal action against the Suburban Lawns with a cease-and-desist order. The band capitulated for legal fees and the hassle was not worth it. So killed their shot to claim and fame, but enough copies and momentum survived to make them an underground legend. Thanks for highlighting this band. I hope good things to all of them and for making one very memorable adventure to Long Beach during my misspent youth.
Let's be honest: If she didn't want to talk to people when the band was touring and recording, of course she doesn't want to talk to people now. LOL I can imagine her getting fan mail or interview requests and just staring blankly at it.
Is that a Portuguese accent? I just realized I have no idea what Portuguese sounds like. Weird. Also, whatever his accent is, it’s very similar to the one used in early radio dramas for villains who were vaguely south Asian, likely because the real south Asian accent is not villainous to American ears & few Americans of the early 1900s had heard Indian accents. But he sounds exactly like a 1930s character actor whose name I cannot remember! It’s a little disconcerting but adds to the intrigue.
Holy hell, this is another band I never got to see or hear back then and I love them! I missed out big time! Sue's vocal style is hilarious, the music is intersting and they're FUN. I was a homeless teen when I lived in L.A. in 1986 so it was kind of hard to go to shows, it took a lot of work and planning but I still met cool people and had a good time. This is my kind of band, thank you so much!
Damn bro you go deep. Just when you think you’ve heard about pretty much everyone a dude like you comes along and proves ya wrong. Great channel my friend🤘
Thank you so much. I had never heard of this band. I am delighted. I'm glad she's enjoying her privacy. What an amazingly talented woman. I hope she's making a mint someplace doing voice over work.
The Suburban Lawn's regularly played at the Cuckoo's Nest in Costa Mesa, I knew the band socially, from the Nest and local parties, but that was years ago, last I heard Sue was a classical musician and was embarrassed of her punk rock youth and did not want anything to do with rehashing her past, this is hearsay though, The Suburban Lawns was always a fun band to see live.
In some ways I think the novelty of Su’s approach to singing influenced others like Nina Hagen, Cyndi Lauper, and even possibly Romeo Void’s singer Deborah. Su’s “style” of her singing tone went from a cool, understated, “diva-esque” into that hyper stylized “cupie doll” register that could be likely found in female characters in the form of a “gangster’s moll” or girlfriend. In early film and later in more comedy spoofs of the same genre there always seems to be a woman with an incredibly unwittingly high pitched, “little girl” voice. Think of the old black and white cartoons of Betty Boop. Regardless, it was definitely a bit of “punk rock” attitude in her delivery as well which is where the disconnected “could not give a shit” appearance to the mix of “rock-a-billy” guitars and angular rhythmic changes which were definitely considered “New Wave” by myself and my friends here in So Cal back in the 80’s. My very first exposure to their self titled debut was in 1980 at my junior high school friend’s house. His older brother had the album and played Janitor for me and the hair on my arms stood up. I never have forgotten it to this day and your deep dive into Su and her whereabouts is great!! I was aware of the documentary being made regarding the band and their influence on the early LA punk scene. Another band who I would consider may have borrowed from Suburban Lawns is Bow Wow Wow when you consider their guitar Rock-A-Billy stylings of Matthew Ashman and even covering a ‘50’s pop song Do You Wanna Hold Me. Great video again man!! 👌😉😁👍💯❤️❤️❤️
Love Suburban Lawns. Unique and Original Music. Apparently Su is a very successful Lawyer and just wants to remain private. Someone managed to track Her down a few Years ago. Gotta respect that.

@@standdownrobots_ihaveoldglory Thing is I heard some of Her Piano Music Album, and She’s obviously a very talented, and smart person. No matter How much Musical Genius any of that Art was.Though I’d LOVE to see a decent Interview with Her, She appeared never to have liked that sort of thing anyway.
Thank you for this introduction. I had not heard about this band before, but I watched the Jonathan Demme movie, Something Wild, 3 weeks ago or so, that I had not seen since 1988, and I remembered Su Tissue in the movie, she was that rememberable for me as a 10-year-old. But going to check this out now.

I connected with Su Tissue more than any other artist during these years. They really made the conformity of punk rock stand out. Love from Long Beach City, CA ❤💥💥💥
Suburban Lawns was possibly the only band that I can think of that was in LA...but shouldn't have been. Had they been part of the Athens-Atlanta scene with bands like Pylon or Love Tractor or the B-52s, they'd probably still be in "alternative" rotation to this very day. Right time...but 100% the WRONG city! Also, "Baby" hit the Nashville scene like a rogue asteroid when it dropped...you couldn't get away from "Flavor Crystals" for several weeks! But then...why would you WANT to? 👍
I only got to see them once, 1980-81-ish, but that's one show I can't seem to forget. One thing you didn't mention or show was Su's goofy, almost robotic arm movements.
