One thing to consider: some of the high-priced outliers might be autographed CDs, some of the low ones might be incomplete listings (only CD 1, no booklet, etc.)
I sold a CD copy of AC/DC's Highway to Hell that I bought for $5 for around $200 on Discogs. I had to do some real digging to find out what was going on, as other editions were selling for just a few dollars as expected. Turned out my copy was one of the earliest CD prints & it had been transferred directly from the original masters without any remastering applied, transferred as AAD, so it was the only "original" untouched mix of the album available digitally. All other CD editions after that - including all those released to streaming services - had been remastered & "fiddled with". That is why my copy was really rare and fetched such a relatively high price even though it was "just" a CD, not even mint. Because that specific mix as a digital release was very rare.
Discogs is the best database ever. I have about 3,000 lps and 500 cds but only about 1,000 catalogued. I'm not selling but using it as a physical locator for the lps. Besides that, it's just fun to read about the history and reviews. And eyeball all the covers.
Didn’t expect to see Coil on here! A pivotal 80s duo in the avant-garde/industrial scene. I see that boxset was released a couple years before the passing of John Balance. I’ve been loving the band this past year, so thanks for sharing some history about them I didn’t know previously! They have a great back-catalogue of genre-defying records if you’re still interested.
Me too, I know Coil from Peter Christopherson who was in Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. But he was also one of the three managers of the Hipgnosis record sleeve company, who made these iconic sleeves like Dark Side of the Moon.
I am pleased that Coil has a mention here. I followed John from Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, and also the Chris and Cosey project, and the end result is that I have most of Coil's catalog. Even though John is no more, I am not obsessive enough to pay such a price, but would gladly pay to view the Colour Sound Oblivion.
@@jlohmann13Coil were John Balance and Peter Christopherson. Both collaborated in Psychic TV before Coil. Peter was one of founders of Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV and Coil (among many others projects).
I've recently started collecting CDs of Japanese metal bands. The Japanese music industry is volatile to say the least and albums can quickly go out of print and can be difficult to locate. Some bands will release a CD with a limited run Boxed Set that includes a concert DVD or Blu-ray. Those can be extremely hard to find and I've paid as much as $180 for a rare box just so I can watch the 'extra' concert Blu-ray.
Discogs is a good site for pricing CDs to compare to other online sites. I’ve picked up a few CDs here and they were in good shape and a good deal compared to other sites. I buy box sets for the most part now. CDs that aren’t available for streaming. Thanks for the video. Rock on!
CD collector here, with some vinyl. Discogs is a great resource. I started cataloging my collection right after the 2017 Northern California fires. I have almost 70 successful purchases on there, but I always check seller reviews. I also cross-reference Amazon, eBay, cdjapan, ImportCD, etc. for the best price. I find the chase is better than the catch when trying to fill out my collection. Luckily, with my level of completionism, if I can acquire a physical copy of every available track through a retail $10 copy, then I don't care about the rare limited edition fanclub-only OOP pressing. But, it is an expensive hobby sometimes... I'm not proud of how much I've shelled out on box sets that contain the only CD releases of rare B-sides, promos, and/or previously unreleased material.
I'm one of the 23 with the limited edition COIL "beast box" live box. You should check out the albums Love's Secret Domain, Horse Rotorvator and The Apes of Naples. These are probably their most accessible work. Peter Christopherson was part of the art collective Hipnosis, which did many of the famous 70's rock album covers. In the 80's and 90's he did music videos for Van Halen, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Ben Folds Five...
That would be Hipgnosis, but did not realize Peter was involved with them. Even though I have nearly all of their catalog, I won't be getting this live one....simply too pricey.
I won an eBay auction for the Dylan boxsrt in May 2024. With tax and shipping, I got it for $881. No regrets - the box gives an insider’s look at the creation of three of the best albums ever created (Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde On Blonde). Totally worth it!
I have that Woodstock box set. Beautiful collection limited to 1,969 copies and comes in a wooden box. It's all of the music performed at the festival with the exception of three songs. That $3.98 sale is probably not the entire box sold but maybe the original 2-cd set or something.
I own a copy of that Woodstock box. One of 1969 copies released, although aparrently there's also a few promo copies. We bought it at the time of it's release and, from what I've read, we were one of only a handful of people who didn't have a problem with their copy! It was worth every cent! Although I'm continually tempted to sell it, as I would get about double what we paid for it, I always decide not to as once it leaves my possession I will never be able to afford to buy another copy of it.
Very surprised to see Coil in this list but it only goes to show that even relatively unknown projects still maintain their relevance even after their mentor’s disappearance. But, of course, you don’t need to spend that high to access their brilliant catalogue.
Some great info Aaron! Thanks for sharing. I understand that there were 500,000 people at Woodstock but over 1,000,000 people claim to have been there. I made that up!
Not to be snarky, but, as a classical music fan, saying you had to look up how to pronounce "Herbert von Karajan" would be a little like me saying I needed to look up the pronunciation of "Beatles" or "Elvis Presley." He's probably the biggest (and most controversial) celebrity in classical music in the 20th century.
I'm curious if #7, Runner, is the same band formed by singer/songwriter Steve Gould after his band Rare Bird broke up. They only released one album, in 1979, that I'm aware of. Hell of an album, too.
Good question - I looked it up again on Discogs and Steve wasn't listed as a member (assuming the info there is correct). I need to check Rare Bird, thanks for the tip!
Does anybody know how that Woodstock release stacks up against something like the releases from the Woodstock Complete Project? I have the 2012 version with 26 discs, and it's a great listen, start to finish.
I bought a few compact discs that were hard to find original print and some wasn't original print was a re-release that was rare. We're talking 75 to $100.
There should be an asterisk by any of those high prices bought during the lockdowns. People went insane and wasted so much money on plush dolls and action figures.
Look at the 2001 Japanese release of South by Heather Nova. Not the promo version, just the standard version: Low: 663 yen (less than $6) Median: 3756 yen (a little over $30) High: 310,895 yen (conversion rate fluctuates, but when it sold that was somewhere around $3000) That had to be some sort of money laundering scheme, right? It doesn't make any sense. There are ten copies for sale on there right now so it's not exactly a rare item, and most of them are priced in the $10-20 range. The copy sold for that outrageous price was apparently mint, but then a mint copy of the very same CD sold for just 1,910 yen (less than $20) less than three months later.

One thing I always wonder about is how much these “whale” buyers and sellers impact keeping Discogs afloat and free (and with very minimal ads.) While Discogs probably doesn’t have a ton of offices or employees, it probably costs quite a chunk of change in hosting and storage costs, paid off of commission from user to user sales.

Hi - please check the Klaus Schulze limited Deus Arrakis Box Set on discogs and the sales history of this set. And then again: Do you really want to tell me that discogs is good for rating the value of vinyls, cds etc? Really? I do not think so.
Discogs is way over rated on value. Ebay shows very recent sales unlike Discogs that’ll show like 5 sales withing a 3 year span and somehow that’s supposed to tell you what it’s worth. Maybe I’ve been missing something about it for the last few years.
Excellent video! The price of these particular CDs is too high. Speculators would like to deceive fans. How do I fix this problem? Inform, warn against thieves and do not buy exorbitantly expensive records: CDs, SACDs, vinyls. Let's respect our own work and the money we earn hard. The case of Karajan's set of albums is simply a cabaret. Not funny. The world is not made up of millionaires.
I understand your point and agree these prices seem high, but there are always folks in any hobby willing to pay a lot of money for items they value at that price, regardless of what others thinks. For instance, I'm always blown away by what Pokemon card collectors pay lol. Thanks for watching!
I never understood, when I look up any album sold list on Discogs it normally only shows a handful of sales withing a 3 to 5 year spread and somehow that’s what their worth at the moment? Thousands of an album sells, but we’re going to base value off of 5 or so sales?
You have a strange definition of "important". A rare, expensive michael jackson recording is one of the least important things I can think of. Expensive and rare do not equate to important.
That's what makes this hobby so much fun, we all have different opinions of what's important to us and the good news is, no one is right or wrong. Thanks for watching!
How about doing a top 10, 45rpm singles. There were numerous articles published over the years but I am sure that information is long outta date by 2025. The most I've paid is $125 but it was a private label release limited to 500 copies and only had local appeal.
There were 23 copies of Coil because they propably have 25 fans or so. If you were stupid enough to buy this at $2500 or whatever you will never ever be able to recoup your money as there is no market for it.
I think you make a fair point but perhaps those buyers never plan on recouping on the cost. People pay a lot for collectables in other hobbies too. I understand the feeling that it's too much though, lol. Thanks for watching.
Why people talk about it online ? Hyping some CDs to increase prices even more ? For example I collect CDs NOT LISTED ONLINE AT ANY DATABASE OR EVEN ZERO GOOGLE RESULTS.
Fair point but I don’t see this is as hype more like information. You’ll see most people in the comments aren’t running out to spend this kind of money lol. There are high priced items sold in every hobby 😊. Thanks for watching!

I own a few 1000 dollar boxsets one of my favorites i own is summoning's sounds of middle earth boxset. Billy rays some gave all goes for 500 at lowest
Awesome! Thanks for sharing and watching!
Agalloch - The Compendium Archive 1996-2006 . I bought it for $209.52 . There is only 250 copies worldwide.
The median prices are very high due to a few people paying over the top prices ,how can someone pay a 20th of what another person paid ,one freak reault means nothing
Yeah, I agree that's why I showed the frequency and pricing of other solds compared to the spikes. Thanks for watching!
most japanese cds are overpriced on discogs I find most alot cheaper on japanese auctions sites
Awesome. There are always deals to be found! That's why I go shopping every weekend. Thanks for watching!
@ForeverAnalog and cds that is not even 10 years old they want 2000us$ for I know it might be limited to 400 but 2 years ago it was 50$ some of those sellers are huge companies
Wish you would have just used single cd issues instead of rare special issue box sets, of course they will be valuable.
I can make another video down the road 😊
The most expensive CD I've ever bought was $400 though I have things that are worth more and I have seen it sold for as much as $1,400 elsewhere it's an old rap album called livin' that ghetto life a Cincinnati classic very rare as he has passed and it's never been repressed it's on TH-cam but I just had to have the real thing you can't find it on legitimate streaming
Awesome, thanks for watching and sharing!
Hi - please check the Klaus Schulze limited Deus Arrakis Box Set on discogs and the sales history of this set. And then again: Do you really want to tell me that discogs is good for rating the value of vinyls, cds etc? Really? I do not think so.
I will check it out thank you for watching!
Discogs is way over rated on value. Ebay shows very recent sales unlike Discogs that’ll show like 5 sales withing a 3 year span and somehow that’s supposed to tell you what it’s worth. Maybe I’ve been missing something about it for the last few years.
I need to put my weirder CDs on discogs. Someone may want them!
Weird is always better, lol! Thanks for watching!
Immediately starts with box sets, out the window.
Fair but I did mention single CDs in this video 😊
@@ForeverAnalog I understand your point. Sellers play on the emotions of collectors. They are also "collectors". They collect our money. All the best!
I'm still betting on 60's Easy Listening.
Thanks for watching!
Right out of the gate, Discogs does not allow bootlegs to be sold on their platform, so I’m guessing this was an official release ‘bootleg’.
Yep, that's true about bootlegs. Thanks for watching!
The Bob Dylan collection isn't a CD, and it has how many 45's?.
Fair point but it's categorized as a 18 CD boxset with 45s included on Discogs. Thanks for watching!
Discogs is not perfect, people are still getting riped off by crooked seller's that's why I still don't put my stuff on there 😠👎🏻..
I found some similar pricing for rare CDs on eBay. I still use Discogs a lot. Thanks for watching!
I never understood, when I look up any album sold list on Discogs it normally only shows a handful of sales withing a 3 to 5 year spread and somehow that’s what their worth at the moment? Thousands of an album sells, but we’re going to base value off of 5 or so sales?
I don't thing you can call those a top 10..... if some were box sets, maybe a double would have been ok🤷♂️
Yeah fair point. Maybe in the next video on eBay solds I will limit to only single CDs. Thanks for watching!
I'm stil collecting cds and lps.
Same!
Can't make it past "people of that nature"
Ooof
bootleg got more value than official 😅
Who will pay for Dylan???
Gawd pay money for Dylan not smart people left on this world
Suspect
Today i have no physical music, and it's all streamed and i absolutely love it..... "Less is more"
That works too!
I would not pay anything for a fucking Eminem record..hahahaa
One of the most expensive albums I ever bought was a Michael Jackson album. I am hoping we get a reissue of History this year.
Awesome!
People actually want to listen to Bob Dylan?
lol - there’s a fan for everyone in this hobby!
How about doing a top 10, 45rpm singles. There were numerous articles published over the years but I am sure that information is long outta date by 2025. The most I've paid is $125 but it was a private label release limited to 500 copies and only had local appeal.
Great idea!
Money laundering?
There were 23 copies of Coil because they propably have 25 fans or so. If you were stupid enough to buy this at $2500 or whatever you will never ever be able to recoup your money as there is no market for it.
I think you make a fair point but perhaps those buyers never plan on recouping on the cost. People pay a lot for collectables in other hobbies too. I understand the feeling that it's too much though, lol. Thanks for watching.
I dont go by any prices on discogs.
