  • 3.6L engine ticking noise in your Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, RAM or Promaster?
    If your oil level is ok, there is a very good chance you need to look at your valvetrain. In this video we will identify where the tick is coming from and perform the repair, in this case the right cylinder head (bank 1) valvetrain on 2015 Promaster (same engine found in many FCA vehicles, like Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Caravan etc.). Also this same fix applies to more then 50% of all the misfire codes for this engine.

    This video is perfect!!!!!! I had a damaged rocker on the right bank intake side. It must have been bad for a long time as it destroyed the lobe on the camshaft. I managed to pick up a used complete cylinder head and changed over the rocker and camshaft ( only $125 for the complete unit ). Saved a ton of money , and really the job wasn't all that bad. I just jammed a piece of wood between the phasers and put a piece of spring steel under the two phasers to keep them from moving. Worked 100% and wanted to thank you for this video !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Tech Tip: if you leave the cam gear lock tool in place you can pop off just one cam gear and do one cam at a time without worrying about the tensioner or even having to mark the chains. Also when I do the back cams in a Promaster I remove the motor mount at the front of the engine there so the engine can be dropped down giving you way more room to deal with the rear valve cover and more room to loosen and tighten the oil control valves. Ohh and one more thing, you don’t have to remove the actuators on the valve covers to get the valve covers off. I’ve done a ton of these and never had an issue.

      Ural Rider Most of the time the problem is in the roller follower (rocker arm) the bearing develops too much play or freeze up and starts chewing up the camshaft lobe. I also had some misfires due to collapsed hydraulic lifters.

    • @TDRAuto
      @TDRAuto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sergio Ibarra If I remember right the left bank is the one where the cams are under ‘pressure’ in TDC. So you only move them after the chain/sprockets are out to release tension. I do it clockwise less then quarter of a turn slowly. You put them back in TDC and again turn them clockwise, you’ll feel the neutral position. After torquing the caps put back to TDC. I highly recommend professional do this job as these are interference engines. One little mistake can get very expensive.

    • @TDRAuto

      If it's a warranty, FCA pays around 2- 3hrs for this job. Alldata time is like 5 hrs (customer pay). Most dealer's labor rate is anywhere from $120 to $160 per hour. Mopar camshaft $213 (best online price) and rocker & follower $12 . It's a good idea to replace all rockers and followers (12 in each cylinder head).

    • @Mia-adventures
      @Mia-adventures 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mr. Mike I would compare it to a injector tick, only louder. And funny thing is when rocker and cam are worn it just ticks. And you get misfire when the lifter is collapsing.

    • @frazercollins9559
      @frazercollins9559 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The real design flaw is the horrible PVC system they have. It actually cools the engine gases and injects it back into the engine instead of the exhaust to get burned up. This also makes it into a sealed system with no way to equalize engine pressure and vent the moisture. Because the engine can't vent, It fills the intake manifold with oily gunk. and corrupts the oil with water. You should change your oil more often. at least every 5,000 miles. By having oil misting out of the intake manifolds into the cylinders it causes carbon to build up on the intake, exhaust valves, and the piston tops which is a known issue with the 3.6.
    There is a fix and it's adding two catch cans, one on each side of the motor. This is a well known problem with the 3.6 and many companies make catch cans for them. The catch cans get the moisture and gases out and clean up the intakes. Carbon coated valves will cause them to run hot and burn, even though they're forged valves. If there is any flaw with the engine, that is it. I highly recommend catch cans for anyone who owns the Pentastar. This is especially prevalent in cold temperatures and will fill up the catch cans with white gunk. That is what water does to oil and it would be back into the engine with even more water without the catch cans. I have an 18 Charger and at 9k miles, the intake manifolds and the air intake were soaked with oil. And the thing ran so well, I couldn't believe it. Not anymore.
