I'm gonna use the ideas in this video to make a drone when I get home! I use a stock shared system plus so the methods are going to vary but I'm sure I can use these ideas to create some cool stuff!
douglynner.bandcamp.com/album/modular-tonalism I’m very proud of my new release, Modular Tonalism. I hope that you enjoy it too. It focuses on developing the pitched portion of my compositions that I have experimented with over the last 6 years or so. It gives a name to the style too! It’s available now as a download, CD or stream. Listen for free at douglynner.bandcamp.com/album/modular-tonalism
+MANTRA 5 Thanks! Be sure to check out this recent performance to see how I used a version of this patch live. th-cam.com/video/OyadJzr0QiI/w-d-xo.html
Does your triple waveshaper exhibit some weird slewey/timbral effect when some of the knobs are turned? My custom built will sometimes make a timbral change as the knob is moving but then go back to normal after a few milliseconds. I actually like it a lot but I don't know if that's a common thing or if I misplaced a capacitor?
Chartre Khan That is absolutely normal for the module. In fact, it was noticing this characteristic many years ago that caused me to run VCOs through a VCA BEFORE the Triple Wave-Shaper as I do in this Patch of The Week and the previous one that I refer to in this video. It produces the timbral effect you are speaking of without the knob turning. The effect is very pronounced in this tutorial.
I don't know the exact answer to your question because I am not an Ableton user, though some readers may be and I welcome them to chime in. But to explore a similar solution for the wave-shaped/folded voices, I would ask myself what module(s) in Ableton affects the wave-shape of oscillators directly (as opposed to subtractive filtering) and dynamically. Look into running a few instances of the modules you think of in a series. Run the oscillators through individual VCA/Env Gen combo analogies and see what you get. In a digital modular environment that I use, Trilobite, I got similar results, when using simple drone tunings, from the Product Module. Their help file describes it this way: "The Product module performs a vectorized multiplication of all connected input signals and produces a single output signal. In essence, it acts as a primitive Ring Modulator." Because the oscillators are tuned the output is not clangorous like a normal Ring Modulator output might be. I hope this helps a little!
if only those modular monsters were not so hard to find.Went through JP 8000,Nord Lead 2,Juno 106,needless to say that Juno came closest to what i wanted, but all those synths that were present in the old Yugoslavia were sold to foreigners for a ridiculously small amounts
This is so great! Love the breakdowns of your patches. Thanks for sharing!
+Chris Beckstrom Thank you for watching!
Thank you for sharing - epic and beautiful patch!!
Thanks for watching :-)
Thanks for this tutorial. I do a lot of drones but this gives me a lot of ideas. Great.
Cool!!
powerful drone thanks for the tips and videos
Thank you!
That is so damn cool. I'm in the researching phase of purchasing my modular. Only bought my sequencer so far.
+Carlosonebillion What sequencer did you buy?
A Korg SQ1. Seemed like the most features for the money and I've seen a lot of people using them effectively with Eurorack synths.
Great!
Good stuff!
+moor hertz Thank you :-)

I would love to hear what you come up with!

Nice patch man! :D

Could you make me a tape of an hour of just this patch, please?
how can I achieve this in Ableton with stock devices, like Abletons - Operator ?

Hi Doug, Very interesting topic. Appreciate this comment, it helps to understand. Got to keep pushing the brain

+Dekonstruktion Kru I have heard about the problem with finding modulars in that area. Sad!
