I’m very proud of my new release, Modular Tonalism. I hope that you enjoy it too. It focuses on developing the pitched portion of my compositions that I have experimented with over the last 6 years or so. It gives a name to the style too! It’s available now as a download, CD or stream. Listen for free at douglynner.bandcamp.com/album/modular-tonalism
Hi Doug, this is just amazing. I have looked at my Triple Wave Shaper for 20 years and this never came to me. Maybe was just too lazy to try out every patching possibility, but now I know. This is going to change my next gig this month. All hail the mysterious Hypno Serge!
I'm preparing for a Bloop-Quack concert this Saturday at Tom's Place in Berkeley. I'm preparing the Mystery Serge for the show and the patch is focused in part around the Triple Wave-Shaper. Here is a bit of reference. th-cam.com/video/CeLPs369p0s/w-d-xo.html
Any way of doing this in software? In a way that: A) doesn't create an aliased mess, B) doesn't send the average computer to it's knees in terms of computation. Some of this reminds me of FM, but has it's own characteristic. I'll probably just have to to get someone with a modular to record some sweeps and then convert it to wavetables in Serum. There's not much like this in the software world that doesn't have the problems outlined earlier :(
+Adam Smith I don't know off of the top of my head. I am playing with a digital modular called Trilobite but haven't tried this. Maybe more in the future.
+Adam Smith Check the Aalto VST. It's based on Buchla waveshaping but its very similar. if you have ableton Live check the waveshaping capabilities of the Saturator
You can do wavefolding using FM / phase modulation. Use 2 operators, set the carrier to sine, 0 Hz. Try an LFO on the modulator operator to vary its amplitude. When the phase of the carrier is at 0 degrees, the wavefolding has only odd harmonics. When its phase is 60 degrees, you get all harmonics. This sounds like many analog wavefolder, a full saw like sound. At 90 degrees on the carrier, you get only even harmonics. All odds are suppressed, including the fundamental, so it sounds an octave up. For a different flavor, try a 0 Hz triangle as the carrier.
All of my cables are Pomona Brand. Quite a few of them, including the long white cables, I have had since I bought the synth (the early 70s). They are pricey but will last for decades.
Doug, I am writing a series article (in Japanese) for a web site introducing Serge techniques. Can I make reference to this video on my next article? I think that more people should know about this. My last article looked like this: www.miroc.co.jp/mailman/140509/#Column

tibetronica Hello Doug, here is the Japanese article, including a link to your web site. I referred to you as a "Wizard" of the Serge: www.miroc.co.jp/mailman/140516/#Column Once again, thanks for this tutorial. It was ground-breaking for me.
Hi Doug, I came back to this years later and actually tried it. incredible.
I'm glad that you did! It provides a rich palette. As much as is revealed here, it only scratches the surface of what the TWS can do.
My Serge is the only thing I've held on to since the 70's.
Great video.
I'll never let it got.
Me too, I think!

Its also a great module for feedback patches, adding the variable bandpass filter and the Wad to the loop.

I'm thrilled that this tutorial opened some new doors for you! Thanks for commenting!!
This is great as I have been looking for stuff on Serge modular gear.
Very good.
3:59 that's my favorite bit.
Excellent video Doug
Thank you very much, Ian!!
that last patch=kick ass
Can't believe I missed this one... FANTASTIC and inspiring! Thank you Doug :)
djangosfire Thanks!
that lazer noise you get at the end!!!!
When I grow up I want to be a Serge.

Great one ! Now I want a TWS again ;-)
It will be like meeting an old friend again ;-)
well done -
Jon Denney Thank you, Jon!

Just discovered this xhip.net/effects/?p=Multiplier . Not quite the same, but looks interesting, as well as being aurally quite similar.

On the computer, for modular stuff I use Reaktor 6 Blocks. I haven't tried Trilobite. What it's like?

Those white banana cables seem super high quality

Serge or software synth?

Yes, of course you can, but, let get you a link to use. I will leave it on this thread a little later.
