  • Three approaches to rhythm generation are combined to create a versatile, master-patch for live or studio percussion needs.
These patch techniques were used in my recent performance, Tenderloin Rain Dance - • Tenderloin Rain Dance ... .
Though this is illustrated on a Serge the concepts apply to many modular synthesizers. Let me know how you apply this on your modular synthesizer.
To see the modules used in this patch in detail see the Mystery Serge at www.serge.synth....

    Hi Doug,
I went back and watched this video carefully. It's a gem!
The particular combination of envelope speeds, cross-holding each other create unpredictable but still semi-regular cycles. It feels like looking at the Da Vinci Code of where rhythms come from.
On my system, built by Rex STS around 1993, my ADSR does not have a hold, but maybe I can try something similar with my Smooth module. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for writing, Tiberonica! It is a shame that the hold function is present on more modules. I know from Conversations with Rex that he is a fan of Hold functionality too. Lots can be done with it on the SSGs. I look forward to hearing where you go with it!

Doug Lynner I meant to say "isn't" present on more modules.

Thank you for this! Indeed gem knowledge and procedure. Which modules are interacting with their hold functions? Two SSGs?

      Thank you for watching!
In this video I used a special gate output on the Envelope Generators called a Window output. It is a gate related to the voltage excursion but able to be positioned along it. I patched the Window outputs in a feedback cycle to create a more playable instrument.

Super polyrhytms! Wondering how this consept would sound if applied with other sounds and perhaps slower decayslope?

Jussi Piekkala The sky is the limit in that regard, Jussi. The tutorial illustrates the bare bones of the patch concept. I look forward to hearing how you use it :-)

I’m very proud of my new release, Modular Tonalism. I hope that you enjoy it too. It focuses on developing the pitched portion of my compositions that I have experimented with over the last 6 years or so. It gives a name to the style too! It’s available now as a download, CD or stream. Listen for free at douglynner.bandcamp.com/album/modular-tonalism
