Updated stats: Wheeler wins 68% of die rolls and 74% of matches in which he wins the die roll, for a 68% winning record overall. Serge wins 38% of die rolls and 29% of matches in which he loses the die roll, for a 35% winning record overall. Wheeler once again puts on a showcase of his exceptional dice skills, now outperforming the predicted 50% of won dice rolls by 18%. Since Wheeler is so dominant in rolling dice, and either Serge or Nelson must lose a die roll for Wheeler to win one, he has actually pushed the average die roll % of a north 100 showdown competitor down to only 39%, meaning that Wheeler has an implausible die roll vorp* of +29%. (*value over replacement player)
This match feels like two people who drafted the same GW cube deck, one person got all the “food matters” cards, and the other person got all the good cards.
JUDGE!!! at 26:16 Wheeler exiles a Deathrite Shaman from Serge's graveyard. However, that Deathrite was previously exiled with a March of Otherworldly Light back on turn 2!
I think at 1:16:32 when Serge was deciding whether to block the Bloated Contaminator, this was such a crucial decision. Sheoldred has Deathtouch - which Serge maybe forgot about - which would kill the Contaminator without having to double block (because the poison was likely irrelevant at this stage of the game) but would cause him to lose the Sheoldred. With the gift of hindsight (and the outcome of the game) perhaps blocking there and killing the Contaminator at the loss of the Sheoldred would have been a line to consider, and he would keep his Kylie Minogue (I believe) too. A really interesting scenario and an incredibly complex game. 😍
I was also thinking about this line, but the poison counter probably doesn't matter (in the short term) so much as proliferating in general. If any damage gets through with Trample, Wheeler can proliferate the Jitte up to 5 counters after combat, which can kill the Sheoldred, but Serge has to double block and lose his Sheoldred anyway if he wants to prevent all of the damage. It's a bind for Serge, since the Sheoldred was his only remaining wincon (on board) after losing Treebeard.
I don't think there was a good option to be honest. Blocking with just Sheoldred might have been best but that still leaves the Jitte with 4 counters (-1 to pump, +3 from damage and proliferate) so Wheeler can still kill the other 4/4. It's hard to see how Serge wins from that position but it's maybe the best of a bunch of bad options.
No, I think if he was going to block at all the double-block was correct. With the double-block, and assuming he wants to kill Sheoldred, Wheeler can either pump twice and spend the 2 extra counters to also kill Astrid, or pump once, leave Astrid alive and 3 counters on jitte. If he only single-blocks, Wheeler pumps once to kill Sheoldred, but then 1 damage tramples over and he proliferates, meaning jitte ends up at 4. He could spend it immediately to kill Astrid (which puts him in exactly the same position as the double-block), but he also can leave Astrid alive with 4 counters on jitte, one better than the double-block. Plus Serge would be down one life. Note that if I'd actually been playing, let alone on camera, there's no chance I could have worked the above out at all cogently :) Love the format.
@@vitriolUK The double block leaves 1 counter on Jitte if Wheeler chooses to kill both creatures, vs 0 with a single block. If we assume the 1 life is negligible then the single block is better in this instance. The disadvantage of the single block is that it gives Wheeler more options, so if he has better things to do with the counters than kill Astrid then the double block could still end up being the better line.
Hey I just realized that I forgot the $ signs in my excel commands when I was doing the analysis I post on the last episode. I've fixed them now. Nelson hadn't been credited for his win in the most recent episode, but there were no other changes. I'll post updated stats once I watch this one
Seeing Wheeler play both Bloated Contaminator and Streetwise Negotiator in the same game makes me so happy. One of my favorite 3 drop Green Creatures cards and Limited All-Star that I always forget fight spells don't work with.
Dont know how relevant but serge didnt tap down a different land to pay for merry at 17:01 when he wanted to put urza's saga down after merry to get the token. May have changed the next turn if he tapped down the land that made white mana but idk.
I’m excited to see more versions of food fight, and maybe experiment with it myself! Could we possibly get a brewing stream or a podcast episode talking about the deck and what it might need? That would be a really cool thing for these emerging decks that have been coming up in discussion recently.
Great episode! In game 1, if Serge had attacked with the 1 karnstruct that could attack and Wheeler took the damage, nothing changes. If Wheeler blocked with a creature, it would have been a different game.
I really love this episode because wheeler just, stops pointing out all of the serge-isms. Now there could be many reasons for this, but I’d like to image it’s because the boardstates were becoming shockingly complex. Like when serge pointed to the counter on the Jite and said “you’ve got a plus one plus one counter” and wheeler didn’t even react, you know that’s because he’s too deep in the tank to process 🤣 wheeler could never let that slide otherwise
I'm genuinely wondering why Ben has such a hatred about blood tokens. They cycle your cards later into a game, Count toward affinity and Academy Mana, make your constructs larger and are permanent to sacrifice to ahnnialator. He said something about not having enough time to talk about it one stream, but I would like to hear his thoughts about them sometime.
Apothecary White from the new CLUE set needs to be in Food Fight. She creates food tokens and makes 1/1 humans per food token you have for 1 white mana.
With how banlist work and how pts are considered, wouldn't karakas, a card that is mentioned everytime a new legend pops up, being in every deck that can run it, be worth being hit with at least a point cost? It literally hurts deck building, is meta defining and hurts deck variety. Seems to check the boxes. Would be curious why it never was considered.
Answers are harder to justify pointing than questions. If it’s pointed then it’s not as likely to show up in decks where it’s being used as an answer than it is where it’s being used to rebuy etb effects. There’s also the fact that its ubiquity is single handedly keeping a lot of legends off the points list. It warps the metagame, but it warps it by keeping certain things in check instead of being dominant. There’s unfortunate cards caught in the crossfire, but the alternative is to bloat the points list further which would kick a lot of other already struggling archetypes in the gut. White agro would likely become unplayable
It's weird because legendary is a mostly irrelevant rule in the format except for clones (which are kind of niche) and, as mentioned, Karakas. And there's already so much incentive to run cards with ETB effects that it feels weird to have more punishment for slower creatures. But they do try to have a very high bar for pointing. The real annoyance is just how low the cost of inclusion for Karakas is in a deck with white, but hey, welcome to the ways old cards were broken, which was different from the ways new cards are broken.
It doesn't really do any of those things to the format. Creatures without good stats and ETBs are already getting ignored, and a lot of the legends that can't see play because of Karakas will also suck in any game that they get hit with Swords immediately after play. Not to mention, in a format with Time Vault combo, blanking a legend is not even remotely the meanest thing you can do. What's next, we start pointing Blood Moon? Fatal Push?
I have a question for serge and wheeler. So I’m building a sorta food artifact token matters deck for commander. I like watching Canadian Highlander for inspiration. Is blue worth adding for things like urza and oko . Curious about your opinions not just for commander but for canlander too
Was wondering why Wheeler didn't Jitte Sheoldred but his final play was better for sure, higher survival rate and doesn't waste his charge counters. Great games.
Since they mentioned it as an aside in the first game I'd be amused to hear people's thoughts: for the "cycle" of one mana instants (healing salve, recall, dark ritual, bolt, giant growth), how much more would each of the non blue ones have to do to be as good as ancestral do you think? Ie how much life from salve, pump from growth etc
Legitimate question. I so so rarely see people run artifact removal. I don’t think there’s a single deck where there hasn’t been at least one problematic artifact. Is there a reason for this?
….sheoldred has deathtouch. The 2 damage every turn is not worth being slowly toxic’d to death. Why did Serge not block before there were enough jitte counters to kill Sheoldred outright?
I swear Canadian Highlander (and this show specifically) is my favorite format I have 0 interest in playing. It's wild to see Power get beaten down by draft chaff half the time!
North 100 Showdown is my No. 1 favourite gaming content on TH-cam.

god i love baseball
Get him to a craps table now!
This match feels like two people who drafted the same GW cube deck, one person got all the “food matters” cards, and the other person got all the good cards.
Hour and a half video and a chaos filled intro? Yes please!
An intro like this is ALWAYS a good sign for the episode.
JUDGE!!! at 26:16 Wheeler exiles a Deathrite Shaman from Serge's graveyard. However, that Deathrite was previously exiled with a March of Otherworldly Light back on turn 2!
I cracked up when, at 53:37, Wheeler said "We don't pause unless Ben says pause" and my phone IMMEDIATELY took it upon itself to buffer out
It IS great to be here.
Thanks for having yourself

Jitte is such a house, and it makes combat math so difficult.

I have the utmost respect for Serge as a human being.
welcome to South 100 Showdown, a Texan Highlander hoedown

That intro is pure madness. I love North 100 showdown
So happy to finally see the food deck after hearing y'all talk about wanting to build it for so long, and can't wait to see how it evolves!
dudes will see that serge is playing the food deck and just be like "hell yeah"
(i'm a dude)

Really enjoy this show. I like how you discuss the lines and what is going on. Thank you for the content!
Perfect deck names, no notes 😁
I always look forward to Wednesdays when I get to see some great Highlander and have a few chuckles.
Oh boy, 90 consecutive minutes of Wheeler and Serge playing Canlander!
What a series. Loved the food deck Serge!
Dont know how relevant but serge didnt tap down a different land to pay for merry at 17:01 when he wanted to put urza's saga down after merry to get the token. May have changed the next turn if he tapped down the land that made white mana but idk.
Thanks for making this episode, it's great to be here
Haven’t even watched the video yet, saw the deck names and know it’s gonna be a good one
With a deck name like Selesnya Idiots it's GOTTA be good content
Honest to goodness my favorite constructed content to watch. You guys love your format and I love watching it!
What a game 1. There was a point where you all were just straight up playing commander in that game. Commander combat math and all.
I can't believe Serge brought a precon to North 100 Showdown
I'm so glad to see a Food deck in action
Yes, I've wanted to see the Food deck in action!
North 100 Showdown is my favourite Canadian Highlander throwdown on TH-cam.
Both of these games are wild, especially the second one. Great stuff!
Fantastic games. Always some of the best Magic content on the internet. Love you guys.
That was such a good game. Love you guys!
Thank you for having me it’s great to be here with SERGE
I’m excited to see more versions of food fight, and maybe experiment with it myself! Could we possibly get a brewing stream or a podcast episode talking about the deck and what it might need? That would be a really cool thing for these emerging decks that have been coming up in discussion recently.
what an amazing match!!!
More tense matches like this please !! This was great =)
Great episode!
In game 1, if Serge had attacked with the 1 karnstruct that could attack and Wheeler took the damage, nothing changes. If Wheeler blocked with a creature, it would have been a different game.
1:15:00 BROTHER SHEOLDRED HAS DEATHTOUCH
Serge just brought an upgraded commander precon to a canlander game
I really love this episode because wheeler just, stops pointing out all of the serge-isms. Now there could be many reasons for this, but I’d like to image it’s because the boardstates were becoming shockingly complex.

That was my favourite match so far on the channel. I really love that food deck. Jitte is strong!
Great games and even better hosts.
So much fun, so tense!

IT IS SO GREAT TO HE HERE FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF EPISODE LETS GOOOO /hype
what ive learned is that jitte is a messed up card
It is so busted. Also, WotC so misunderstood how strong it was that it was in a precon.
This is the energy I want to start everyday with
Apothecary White from the new CLUE set needs to be in Food Fight. She creates food tokens and makes 1/1 humans per food token you have for 1 white mana.
Should have blocked with shieldred, it has deathtouch!
I never expected Wheeler to be the type of man to just kill another mans Gaffer
Game 2 would have been a lot different if Serge hadn't let wheeler get the Jitte. Great games though, nice v1 of the foods deck.😍
Awesome food fight debut, I think tear asunder would be a good addition to the deck, it seemed like it needed more interaction.
Kinda curious if Serge knew Sheoldred had deathtouch because it was the phyrexian version? Feels like it might have changed some of the plays.
I like how serge is just playing a commander precon
Serge showed up to prove Canlander is actually just EDH 33:30

As the premiere watcher if the format I enjoy this show
Hoping to see food fight again!
Yes FOOD DECK!
Saw a 1.5 hr showdown episode and thought “cool! Gonna get the mythical 5-game episode”…. I guess this is just 2024 magic lol
Omg the food deck is here!!
This video was epic!
IT'S DA SURGE!
Amazing matchup
SERGE RETURNS!
Love the show :D @serge you not runing Underworld cookbook?
Ooh, Tootsie-Tier confirmed on the Patreon!
I have a question for serge and wheeler. So I’m building a sorta food artifact token matters deck for commander. I like watching Canadian Highlander for inspiration. Is blue worth adding for things like urza and oko . Curious about your opinions not just for commander but for canlander too
Also the may I suggest aristasnacks as a name for the food deck
When do we get the cowboy episode? North 100 Showdown, a Canadian Highlander Hoedown?
Normalize calling decks Guild/Shard/Wedge Idiots. It's so good.
also during game one when wheeler was using his lion sash the deathrite was already exiled from the march of otherworldly light
Great game one of the best!
Ironically the flavor fail of not running "Food Fight" in the Food Fight deck 🤙😅🤙
Was wondering why Wheeler didn't Jitte Sheoldred but his final play was better for sure, higher survival rate and doesn't waste his charge counters. Great games.
I don't understand why serge didn't block with bird or dork in game one when the jitte came down.. is there something i'm missing?
Food fight? We're eating good, boys. See what I did there?
what a game!
great games
Since they mentioned it as an aside in the first game I'd be amused to hear people's thoughts: for the "cycle" of one mana instants (healing salve, recall, dark ritual, bolt, giant growth), how much more would each of the non blue ones have to do to be as good as ancestral do you think? Ie how much life from salve, pump from growth etc
Google Power Lunch
They always say it's not the first ancestral that wins the game, it's the second, so obviously 10 damage lightning bolt would be right.
Legitimate question. I so so rarely see people run artifact removal. I don’t think there’s a single deck where there hasn’t been at least one problematic artifact. Is there a reason for this?
Is that North 100 intro music based on the Kids in the Hall theme?
There was some beef (and math) in these matches
Serge! Serge! Serge!
🎉
serge is playing my commander deck in canlander
how long before wheeler is calling himself the premier food pilot of the format lol
insulting maverick should be a crime. that deck is the heart of magic the gathering. its like if I insulted you canadians love... like beavers
What is the purpose of "points" with certain cards?
I enjoy you gents. Thanks. Comment made less than 2 minutes in.
Screw food tribal halfling tribal is where it’s at. Is it basically the same yes
Serge.... My dude, be more aggressive. You had that game in the bag.
I actually factually forgot Jitte had the gain life mode 😅
I think that Jitte card might be pretty good.
Funny thing it isn't really these days
You know it's a good one when it's 90 minutes long.
….sheoldred has deathtouch. The 2 damage every turn is not worth being slowly toxic’d to death. Why did Serge not block before there were enough jitte counters to kill Sheoldred outright?
Biggest problem with Food is that it makes games last a lot longer. Not complaining about getting more content though :P
Frood token? I always knew Serge was real hoopy.
I swear Canadian Highlander (and this show specifically) is my favorite format I have 0 interest in playing. It's wild to see Power get beaten down by draft chaff half the time!
