We look at the jobs I use in my room and how setting up an economy helps with behavior management.

This is why, sometimes, I envy primary school teachers. You can build strong relationships and classroom activities/routines that I can't do. With more than 200 students, it'd be too difficult! :)
+A happy teacher - A true story you have a very hard job! I can not imagine trying to keep up with that many kiddos.
Do you have any ideas for how I can get middle school students to follows rules and such? FYI I teach Home ec. AKA Family and consumer science ...the problems I'm having are students completely opting out of any work, classroom disruptions , cell phone use, destroying my supplies/equipment, going to the bathroom often and not returning quickly, being disrespectful to me and fellow students and coming unprepared
I teach high school but thought about doing something like this (as it would work with a few classes that I have). I just have not completely thought out how to keep up it with all of my classes. Thank you for your explanation.

Just discovered your channel and this video. This is great! Do you have the kids switch jobs at some point? Have you had any issues with kids not liking their jobs and wanting to "trade"? Thanks for the great ideas.
They have the job for a week and then get to the do the next job. They will eventually rotate thru all of the jobs. Yes they have asked to trade jobs before and that is totally fine. That shows a great skill to work together and compromise.
Thanks for the reply, and one more question. At what point in the school year do you start introducing all of this? I'll be starting my 3rd year of teaching, but I've never done anything specific with class jobs before, so I appreciate your insight.
So it depends on the grade and class. I would depend the first week or two really focusing on behavior Amdahl expectations. Then one the class is going smooth, introduce it with a conversation about responsibility and being a school family. Introduce the jobs first and then add the economy the next week.

They change jobs on Mondays. First thing in the morning we announce the new jobs and do a really quick review.

You said you have the banker pay the kids their tickets each day. How does that work? Thanks! So excited to try this in my class this year!
Jessica Allen I sit on the floor with the banker and the rest of the class sit in their spots on the carpet. I take my box of folders and take one at a time and add anything I need to the folders and hand it to the banker. The child comes up to the banker and gets their folder and the tickets, while I fill out the next folder for the next child. It is like an assembly line. Good luck next year!
If you are in teacher's station and a kid comes up and talks or if a kid is bossing around another kid do you collect tickets immediately?What phrase do you say when a kid does something to owe tickets? What if the kid refuses?
Tickets are paid right then. If they refuse to pay then I say “no worries, I will take care of it, try not to worry about it”. Then I pay the other kid and then rake care of the refusal later. Usually it will end up costing them way more later. But remember that I use this economy linked with love and logic! Having a strong relationship with choices and fun help keep my kids functioning in a helpful mood.

Hi. How do you divide the time say when two kids want to buy the comfy chair on the same day? Are there set times when the chair is available? Is there a time limit on the chair?
I usually do a first come first serve situation. If two kids come to me in the morning with money for the chair, then the first one gets it today, and then I will let the second have it the next day.
In general, a kiddo can get 3 tickets per day, so 15 tickets per week! If it costs only 10 tickets to rent the comfy chair, doesn't it cause problems? For exemple, 3 kiddos have 10 tickets each and want to each get the comfy chair? I'm confused as to how it works if the things they can buy are not that expensive? :o
There are many choices of things to buy. So for example, the prize box was 15 tickets. That is how much they get a week. So lots of kids save for Friday. Some use tickets for trading snack (10 tickets), others loose tickets when they have to pay someone who cleans their mess, etc. Through Out the week, the tickets get spent.

+Titan Artist they are called good choice tickets and I just made them in word. The kids don’t really care about what’s on them. All they care about it using them. As for the introduction, I start with the jobs one week and then the tickets the next week. I start with the payments and then the next week introduce what they can buy with them.

I tried it with my grade k learners and it worked but, its been 2 weeks since I started with pre k, and nothing seems like working with them, please advise.

Do you do a clip chart in your room or is this in lieu of that?
+Anna Spencer I got ride of the clip chart. The research has shown that is can cause kids to be worse and act out. Also, I don’t use it because it is hard to connect that to the really world.
