Early San Francisco did have some rough times. I guess it won an Academy Award as a historically accurate film. There was a gang that bullied everyone until the city (really just a town) got organized and ended it. Although filmed in 1935, the wisdom of 1849 applies today; "Someone has to tell the people of San Francisco that you can't have a city without law and order." Interesting movie. Fun to see how Hollyweird saw old San Francisco. Great acting, odd script, and nostalgic sets. The acting makes this flick recommendable.
Is that David Niven being made to leave out the door way @13:34 saying, ' Alright alright alright, you think it's worse than the Barbary coast in Africa! ' In David Niven's second book ' Bring on the empty horses ' he mentions his first role as an extra in this film. He said in the film his role was he got thrown out the window of a brothel saying ' Orl right Orl right!' and landed face down in the mud and everyone including donkeys walked over him!
Best performance by Hopkins that I've seen. "I grew up in a bell jar with forget-me-nots in my hair." I Googled it immediately and got nothing. McCrae explained who she was meant way more than her hardscrabble background. Hopkins and Robinson were both great in angry confrontation. Hopkins: "I wish I could tell you something that would make you howl and shoot!"
At 1:04 he said that no city can exist without law and order, no truer words were ever spoken. Today our country has many cities and some states that fit that description.
Was Walter Brennan ever young lol. Here it is in this movie 1935 and it looks like an old man. He must’ve had false teeth even back then, because his big smile shows no teeth at all in this movie. God bless Walter Brennan. He sure got around!
Hopkins was hard to work with. In his book - Robinson wrote that there was a scene where he had to slap her. Hopkins told him to really hit her and he did. SLAP!... Robinson said the whole crew broke out into thunderous applause.
The lady with the Blonde Banana Curls is Miriam Hopkins who was in Gone with the Wind. She ran the Whore House that Rhett Butler frequently visited. Wonderful actress the other reason I like her is she intently disliked Betty Davis.

As one would expect in a Samuel Goldwyn film; excellent cast, crew and direction under Howard Hawks. Goldwyn made many films, financed them himself and released them himself, or through United Artists. After his problems with Paramount and Goldwyn Pictures (pre-MGM), he had no trust in the New York moneymen who financed the studios.
David Niven said in an interview that this movie was his "big break", where he's thrown out of a window and says "All right, I'll go." But I didn't see that scene anywhere in the movie. Let me know if and where you find it.
Is is possible that Niven was referencing (loosely) the scene @13:34? That appears to be the only scene close to what he describes. The character has a british accent (I can't tell if it's a cockney accent) and is being thrown out of a brothel (but not thrown through the window), and the dialog is different from what Niven reported in the Michael Parkinson Show interview. But perhaps he was remembering rather loosely.
