DIY Making A Needle Felted Fox-- PART 1

- After many requests for an actual tutorial, I have finally attempted to create one. The supplies you will need are below in this description.
This video is intended for you to be able follow along and make a similar fox. I do not have a professional filming set up, so please be merciful. I did my best, and I hope that you are able to benefit from it in some way.
Please know that it took 18 hours for me to needle felt this fox. It is not a quick or simple project. However, even if you cannot execute your needle felted fox to exactly the same degree, I think you can still enjoy this craft, and still end up with something nice. Best of luck!
MATERIALS
For PART 1 of the fox tutorial, you'll need:
-A felting surface (such as a foam pad)

-Needle Felting (barbed) Needles:
40T yellow and 36T black needles (www.etsy.com/shop/FeltAlive)
** It is important to note that these needles can break, especially the 40 gauge, so you may want a spare needle or two. When shaping areas that are very dense, use the 36T to reduce the risk of breaking.

-Core Wool Roving or Batt (maybe about 2oz.) Purple Moose Felting

-Plastic Safety Eyes (7.5mm)

*optional-- you might want an awl for piercing the wool to insert the eyes, but you might just be able to force the eyes through the wool with out an awl.
-Paint (acrylic paint in a rusty, orange-brown color for the eyes)
-Glue (I use Aleene's Tacky Glue)

In PART 2, PART 3 and PART4 of the tutorial you will also need various "fox colored" rovings (please see those video descriptions for links). I used: white, black, dark gray/charcoal, mixed brown, tannish orange, reddish orange (nutmeg) and medium orange (pumpkin). You will probably only need an ounce, or half ounce per color. I get all my wool through various Etsy sellers. The primary body color of my fox is made using Nutmeg Ashland Bay Merino www.etsy.com/listing/20795430... and Pumpkin Ashland Bay Merino from "slimchicken" on Etsy --if you are really wanting to get the exact same color. But you do not have to have the exact colors I used. If you do an image search for red foxes you will see there is great variation in their coats depending on the age, time of year, and individual genetics of a given animal. So this is pretty forgiving in terms of how you make your fox.
And for the whiskers I used some KANEKALON doll hair (from DollyHair.com) in the color Kool Black. I like this for whiskers because in any animal that will have whiskers no longer than half an inch or a centimeter long, this works perfectly. If they get too long they get droopy with weight. But I have tried other types of doll hair and they are more droopy right away. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

I love your videos as well. However I have a question about the eyes. Where do I find the acrylic safety eyes that you can paint? All I'm finding is the ones that are already colored. I have also seen that some people use glass eyes and paint them but I can't find those either. And how do I know what size eyes to buy for a certain project? Thanks for your help!

I have watched a lot of needle felting videos and I have never seen anyone start with this fiddly eye application. If this were the first felting tutorial I ever watched, I would NEVER have even considered starting needle felting. Maybe this is more felting for sculptors than felting for crafters. It doesn’t seem to be something the average person can learn. It appears one would have to have actual sculpting talent. Such an elaborate process!
Yes, I agree sculpting talent helps, but I did very little sculpting ever in my life up until 5 years ago (I had always done 2D art until then). All the needle felted projects I have ever made are available to view in photos/ photo albums on my Kreations by Krysta Facebook page. If you look through it you will see I started out at a much more simple level. If the eyes (or any other part) seem too overwhelming, definitely simplify wherever you need to to make the process enjoyable. You could simply use a black dot of wool for the eyes. Or some orange wool with a black center. Just have fun!

This is a very thorough tutorial. Krysta has an innate sense and is able to use a free form approach. I still need a bit more structure for my foundation.. I used this tutorial in combination with other felting techniques from other instructors. It took me a while to realize that Krysta does not use the usual felting lingo. Her use of color blending and color delineation is excellent. I learned a lot and highly recommend this tutorial for building on your skills.

Very informative video. Thank you for sharing this with us. I’m wondering, Where do you buy your eyes from?
I get them from different Etsy sellers, depending on what I need. I always just search for what I am looking for. One seller you might try is GlassEyesOnLine (via Etsy). They are an American company. The have the slit pupils in small sizes (6-9mm) only in glass (search "Glass Eyes with SLIT Pupils on Wire"), but starting at 10mm and up they have plastic safety eyes. I prefer to buy clear eyes and paint them, especially with glass eyes, because the pre colored eyes are transparent. I think the pre-colored plastic ones are not transparent (I mean so that you can see straight through to the wool/glue behind the eye). The dome part is still transparent like a real eye. You can also try painting the backs of the eyes with metallic or glitter paint for some neat effects (even nail polish could work). But they do have some really neat looking pre-colored eyes too!
To get smaller PLASTIC eyes I have ordered eyes from an Etsy seller based in China (but it was a LONG time ago). The reason I like them is because some of the actual glass eyes I had tried were not as consistent in pupil size as the plastic ones.
Sometimes I make my own eyes using tiny glass cabochons and painting or using color pencil on thick paper or photo paper to design the eyes, then adhering the cabochon on top of the paper designs. You can even painting the back of the cabochon, but it is more difficult since the image is magnified through the glass. Hope this helps! Best of luck!

Well... to be honest my very first introduction to needle felting was by accident when I came across this video: th-cam.com/video/4QDOS1GzDsI/w-d-xo.html From this one video I started making similar little cats, then dogs, then slowly it progressed as I realized it was possible to also make realistic animals (which has always been my passion in art). Primarily I was just making cute pet replicas, later realistic replicas, and was using Facebook as my only platform. If you go to my Facebook page, I do have everything I have ever needle felted there--just scroll down to the very beginning and you will see the whole progression. I did not really spend much time on TH-cam until years later. Now that I am focused primarily on my TH-cam tutorials rather than taking custom orders, I have also seen several neat videos here, but I don't suppose there is any one particular channel that I could say helped me. Many that inspire me perhaps. ;)

Sorry for the delay. I have some of that info in the description of the various parts to this tutorial, but in general I search for whatever I need on Etsy. I very often buy core wool roving from Dream Felt on Etsy. But if that shop is sold out, I have purchased from several other sellers too. I haven't really had a bad experience buying from anyone on Etsy.
Where do you get the eyes from? I'm struggling to find any of good quality, that are clear, and cat-like
I usually search for "clear plastic safety eyes" or "clear plastic safety cat eyes" on Etsy. I always buy clear eyes and paint the back side, but you can actually get some nice pre-colored eyes there too. :)
Are cabochons good for eyes cus I just bought them
This is the best tutorial I have come across on how to make a fox! You did a fantastic job on this and I appreciate it so very much. I do have difficulty in getting proportions correct when I make an armature, especially the head size and leg length.
Thank you! Me too, I always struggle with sizing and proportion and end up changing it as I go along often. I have seen some people print out an image of an animal and then build the armature by laying it on top of the image. It seems like a smart idea to get correct proportions to start with. I tend to just start with the head always.

Is the acrylic paint enough to keep the eye properly colored without peeling off? Have you tried covering the dried acrylic with clear nail polish or spraying it with Krylon fixative?
Since the paint is on the back side of the eye, I have not had any problems with it ever peeling. It is fairly protected, and also I think the glue seals it a bit when the eyes are glued in place.
I’m planning to need felt soon and I’ve been wondering-is the wiring inside just to make it sturdier? Or would I be able to make it posable?

The wire can do both. I have not made many items that I intended to be posable though. My baby Yoda had posable ears and arms. But, mainly when I use the wire it is to make it sturdier. I did not use any wire for maybe a year when I first started needle felting, and sometimes I still opt not to. I find the wire to be something that has both benefits and, well... annoyances. Wire increases your chances of breaking these already fragile needles. And I find myself often frustrated by them because I loose some freedom in the needle felting process when there is a wire beneath the wool. However, there are instances when the benefit outweighs the annoyance. For example, I am working on something right now that stands on 3 of 4 legs, and I think the wire is helping it to keep its pose secure. Also, if you are hoping to make something posable, wire will be great for that. Keep in mind thin wire, bent over and over in the exact same spot, will eventually break. But I imagine 18-22 gauge wire would be safe to pose for a long time. Best of luck!

Well... when I first started I did not ever use wire. And I am totally sure you can make this fox without wire. However, I think you will find that maybe using even just a doubled twisted up chenille stem for the front legs might be helpful to get support while still remaining slender. But it is not absolutely necessary. Have fun!

I saw that u trimmed the front arms . I have not but how many inches would you say that you added to the channel stems?

At around 25:20 in the video I see that the front legs will not be long enough. I did not measure the additional pieces when I made it, but it looks like about 2.5 inches (6.5cm) of additional chenille stems on each front leg, with maybe 3/4 inch (2cm) or more being used to twist together with the original stem. You might try to look at the leg length at around 33:00 minutes and compare the length/proportions to see if what you end up with will work. It does not have to be exact, but just reasonably similar. Most importantly, have fun ^_^
Do you ever hurt yourself while doing this or are the needles no that pointy
I have made the baby yoda, now on to your Fox. I've watched it about 20 times and I think I'm ready now. Question......I saw some other felters dip their needle in a dot of glue when felting in the folded over fur, have you ever done that?
Sorry for the delay, I somehow missed this comment. I do not do this because I find the glue and wool becomes sticky and a pain to manage. But I have done something similar with watered down glue one time (if I remember correctly) on a pet replica which used a large amount of real fur from the cat. Other wise, I prefer not o use glue with the wool. I do however dip the needle in glue when I add whiskers that are made from doll hair (like the whiskers for this fox). It is still a bit of a pain, and I do find using a damp paper towel to keep cleaning the needle between every couple whiskers is helpful. I see no reason why using glue when adding the wool would not work though, especially if you keep wiping the needle as it gets tacky and starts causing the wool to stick to the needle itself. It's totally up to you 😉😊

I have found the glue to be all that is needed. Plus, the wool is built up around the front edges of the eyes which helps secure them as well. I have never had them wiggle at all. :)
So I'm doing research on felting I want to do a life size head of a unicorn 🦄 and I'm trying to thing of stronger + filler to get how I can make it work any points so so appreciated
I made a life size zebra head once. On the inside I used foam (like the kind in craft stores for making furniture or cushions I think, similar to mattress toppers. NOT memory foam, just the normal spongy foam). I formed a very basic shape of the head/neck by folding/rolling the foam, tied it off with strings so that it retained its shape, and then began felting wool on top of that foam base. After that I proceeded to sculpt by building up the wool as usual. Hope this helps! Good luck!
The pink clover pen: is it made of three 36T needles as well? If so, then how’s it different to the black-tipped 36T needle that you used at 1:04:35? Also, did you add whichever needles to that pink pen you wanted for this tutorial or did you receive it pre-equipped with them three 36T?

Could you please tell the size the fox ended up being? Also it would have been helpful if you gave the measurements from the tip center of of your folded pipe cleaner to the end of your twist, then I could be sure I had the length close to yours. Same thing for back. Just would have been helpful. One more tip, on video it is very hard to tell size so any time you can give an idea of the size, it would be very helpful. For example when you finish the head and said it was about the size of ping pong ball that would give me a good idea. Ps: haven’t watched whole video yet, so if you have done that please excuse me for being redundant. Thank you. Love your fox!

What’s the total wool you used for this fox ?
It's hard for me to say exactly how much wool I used. In my typed video description (when you click on the arrow to view the rest of the video description beneath the video title), I tried to give safe estimates of what you will need (2oz core wool and 0.5 to 1oz of the dyed wools) as well as some links to some options for purchasing the wools. Hi there Annette, unfortunately I do not have something like that available. I am so sorry. I understand that would be helpful and I do hope to create something like this in the future, and in fact have a pdf in progress for a cat, but it is still in the very early stages and I have not made any progress on it in quite some time. I unfortunately have very little time to dedicate to needle felting over the last several years. I find I am only able to make one or two items per year 🙁

@@annettepeacock967 yes... I wish I had a good estimate for you in ounces. Overall the head is about the size of a ping pong ball I suppose, and the density can be variable in this craft, so it's up to you in a sense. Unlike clay, where for the most part all one inch cubes will weight 0.3oz or something (I am just picking a random weight here), you could easily have one inch cubes of felted wool with a wide range of weights (ie., containing very different amounts of wool). It really depends on the artist and how dense they choose to felt the wool. I like to make things fairly dense, but not so dense that the shape cannot be modified if needed. I wish I could think of a common everyday item to compare the density to. Maybe about as dense as a pool noodle? It should be pretty firm, but still squeezable with a fair amount of force. Not sure if this is helpful... 😆

why don't you take normal wire, much more stable
Sometimes I use different wire, but sometimes I use no wire armature at all. The wool itself can be very stable when tightly felted :)
