  • We hark back to the days of Duke Nukem 3D modding to look at an old unfinished mod thing from back before I had a decent mic. I was going to split the video into two before I remembered that I couldn't be arsed. Also: the return of Q&A!

      @@dragonfire7354 in the 5 Days vid at 33:27, Trilby says "I'm no expert on guns, but I think that's a late-18th-century musket rifle. Standard issue of the British Army of that period."
      Based on that, it's either a Brown Bess musket (standard 1722-1838) or a Baker Rifle (standard 1801-1837) according to Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_rifle#United_Kingdom_&_British_Overseas_Territories)
      But then again, "shotguns" as we know them didn't really become separate until rifles became more distinct. Plenty of muskets were loaded with ammunition that resembles buckshot (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shotgun#History)
      So you're right, at least technically. But it could have fired projectiles similar to a shotgun.

    In regards to the Douglas Adams comments, he talked later in his life about how basically he had very little interest in going past the initial trilogy of HHG2TG, but his agent and other people around him basically kept hounding him to keep writing. He admits that lot of his writing is pretty mediocre and didn't really have much passion behind it after a certain point. This is why I thought it was kind of bad form that his wife/estate basically just released crap he hadn't finished in Salmon of Doubt, and then allowed another author to continue the series based on random ideas they assumed Adams wanted to actually write. Pretty tacky.

    Similar to the capable protagonist debate, Bruce Willis's performance in the original Die Hard was noteworthy because he was a vulnerable action hero. He was crying as he pulled the broken glass out of his feet. It was a nice touch that he lost in the sequels, so the sequels suck.

    I always thought Jackie Chan was a great "overly capable" actor. A lot of his movies are played with him getting his ass kicked, and half the things he tries never working within a scuffle. He's Jackie Chan, so he always succeeds and comes out on top in the end, but as Gabe says, he does a good job acting hurt, surprised, and like he's totally shocked he survived throughout each scenario.
    As he got older, I think his movies leaned more towards comedic slapstick violence instead action kung-fu carnage.

    The whole "Nate is a monster" thing makes me think of an idea that maybe we could have a hero who in any other story would be the villain. So, they sacrifice other people, kill without remorse and, not enjoying killing, but still doing it. I would keep going just to see how far they would go.

  • @greenredblue

    It's interesting to me that Gabe & Yahtz take such pains to detail every tiny feature and trick of the early levels, and really highlight how limited the game engine is - e.g. Going underwater is actually teleporting to a different room, etc. - in the very early stages when the level design really is pedestrian.
    But in episode 2 when the level design gets genuinely interesting and engaging - faking turning on a water-pipe that floods a room; having moving platforms in the middle of water so they have to be synced across rooms - not a peep.

    "Jackie's always OK."
    -Jackie Chan after eating shit due to a failed stunt.
    I will always have respect for Jackie due to the fact that he does his own stunts. The plug in his skull is testament to his desire to deliver an exciting and enjoyable viewing experience. His attention to choreography and cinematography provides some of the best action and fight sequences I have ever seen in films. I think my favorite fight sequence is the bit at the end of Drunken Master 2 where he gets his ass beat by his bodyguard before really getting "serious" and kicking it into gear.

      How did Sterling "give rise" to FNAF?

    • @dreamingserpent8372
      @dreamingserpent8372 9 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      MCHellshit According to the rumor that has been going on... Well just watch Jim Sterling's FNAF 3 video then you'll understand.
      th-cam.com/video/Hd0ulmT2qRw/w-d-xo.html
      But to make a long story short:
      Scott Cawthon claims that he created FNAF after critics heavily mocked one of his games while it was on Green Light. A game with Creepy Beavers. The most popular one being of Jim Sterling's video where he bashes the games horrifying character models.
      This led the Creator into a deep depression before rising back up and saying "I bet I could make something scarier" So with the criticisms he received from the last games, he then went to work in making Five Night's At Freddy's.
      That's rumor, I don't know how much of it is true or not, probably is a myth but even then it makes a very interesting parallel with Yahtzee :)

    "The worst flaw of a work you hold close to heart" is an interesting question. What comes to mind for me is Final Fantasy 4.
    SPOILERS...
    FF4 is a tale of redemption. As a Black Knight, Cecil committed terrible acts. During the game, he has to redeem himself, which he proves by passing a no-one-has-succeeded test to become a Paladin.
    But was it a fair test? Late in the game, it's revealed that the Paladin test was run by the spirit of Cecil's father, KluYa. So did he succeed where no one else had because he was actually the most worthy? Or did the others only fail because they weren't KluYa's son? It's a pointless twist that undermines the theme of "hold yourself to a high moral standard", just to give Cecil a bit of "Destined Hero" flavor.

    Correction for Yahtzee: It's not his job, but a good player can be offensive with demoman's pipe bombs. they deal huge amounts of damage if you hit someone with it before it hits the ground once. Playing that kind of Demoman is fun when you get the hang of the aiming. :D
    Also, if you bring a shield instead of a mine layer, your job is 100% offense.

    Dark Souls actually presents a very believable explanation for all the game areas, as long as you pay attention to the NPCs and item descriptions, especially the boss souls. The only issue about them is that they're very small even when they're supposed to be entire cities or even countries, mashed together in extremely close proximity from one another..

    • @miserableoutcast
      @miserableoutcast 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I don't think entire countries are mashed into the game,at least not in DS1. You play within the kingdom of Lordran. I think the areas in the game exist within believable distances of each other, but I agree that there is a lot of shit compacted into the area you play in.

    • @suwatsaksri7191
      @suwatsaksri7191 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Compare that to Dark Souls 2 where you go up the elevator in a poison infested tower only to end up in a molten metal sunken castle somehow on top of the tower even though you could see its peak and the sorrounding area suddenly turned from a cesspool of poison into lava, there is suspension of disbelief and then there is Dark Souls 2

    • @miserableoutcast

    You know... That's a really good point about flaws making characters more appealing.
    I didn't really think about it until now, but... I really liked the characters in KonoSuba, but all of the main characters are intentionally written to be awful people. Be it Aqua's overconfidence that basically always backfires on her or Megumin's delusions of grandeur and immaturity that create no end of problems or Darkness's inability to hit anything and humiliation fetish...but, despite that, they are all so incredibly interesting to watch form episode to episode.
