I just have to say I really appreciate how much you give credit to and share channels that helped you or had valuable information, Fern. I have found that the plant tube community does seem to help each other out by giving credit and mentioning one another on their channels, but I still think you’re a stand out. 😊 I’m sure these kinds of videos are a lot of work - shooting over many months to document progress, but they are one of my favorites to watch. It’s so satisfying to see the roots grow, leaves pop up and the ups and downs. So good. 💚

I’ve propagated alocasia like this for years, so I’m always surprised to see people question if it’s possible. If you cover the stem with substrate it will grow roots and it has growth points and nodes, so it’s absolutely possible 🙂

I stem propagated my alocasia around six months ago, didn’t air layer just chopped it up and plopped it in some soil without leaves. When I say the leaves on the stem cuttings made me fall in love all over again with this pant, it really did. Each stem cutting produced two growth points.

In the past month, I’ve gotten so many Alocasia varieties… and I’ve been wondering how I could potentially propagate them! This is perfect timing ❤
I bought a couple of larger variegated Frydeks and a small one, and then a bunch of small starter plants in plugs. I’m having issues with a couple of the tiny ones but most are doing well so far!
I can’t wait until I have corms to harvest from my larger ones 💚🤍💚
    I love your Alocasias ❤
There’s also a few other people I watch that have gotten me more into them recently, but I initially loved yours and added some to my list :)
I’m just glad I have beneficial mites being shipped on Wednesday, because I have a thrip issue I’m trying to get ahead of, and I’m worried about spider mites with all of the alocasias that I now have 😅

Yay for getting into Alocasia - I love them so much! I find they can be difficult when they're starter plants, but they get tougher as they mature. Beneficials helped my thrips so much, so I hope they help you too!! Thank you for watching

It's November 6, 2023, and the time frame says this video was from a month ago, but your saying April and May dates so? Oh, I see now...
But anyways, I appreciate this video very much. I have two small Alocasias and they never have more than two leaves 😢 Alocasias are great. I've been learning so much about them...such as they have corms, and how to prop them, and now this too. I learn so much from you❤
I'm new to your channel and I often times binge your videos. I love all your planty videos and how you share all your plant knowledge with us. Thanks for all your hard work 👍 I appreciate it! Much love and support from Seattle 😊

Randomly sharing this as your plant ways made me remember something.
Years ago we had moved into our place we had bought from an old man (91yrs old). He and his wife had raised their two children here, having bought the house new sometime in the late 1940s. Anyway, I had been mowing and pulling weeds when i happened upon a lock of silver and gray strands of hair tied to the old wire trellis that ran the length of the disused garden plot out behind our garage. It was apparently his wife’s hair tied to the wire. I recalled from the man’s realtor that his wife had grown ill and died some years back and loved her garden.
I am assuming he tied her hair there. I knelt down and just stared at it till I realized I was staring at the vegetation behind her hair.
And that is where it has been for over a decade now, and so shall it stay till we leave or die.

Hi Fern, this Alocasia treatment has been very similar to what I did when my Polly came down with spider mites, except that I used the opportunity to transfer the mother plant into leca and found 7 corms which I grew on to eventually join the mother in leca. So now I’m getting a lot of new growth on all the corms as well as the mother plant. It’s looking fabulous. Thanks for sharing your experiment with us and keep us updated on the progress.

Maybe you could do a alocasia plant care guide video one day. only my black velvet is still going strong😅🌱💗

Loved this video. Such fast roots and beautiful new leaves. The new and old plants look amazing! I have been afraid to try Alocasias because I heard they were very difficult to grow. I'm getting back into my houseplants after several years. There is a lot of great info online. I appreciate it whenever you share sources for good info. I am learning so much from all your videos. I have never grown an Alocasia, but I was wondering if when the leaves drooped when you repotted it, would it have helped any to support the leaves back in an upright position for awhile? I am wondering if the repotting just shocked and weakened it and it didn't have the strength to stand all the way up again. Maybe propping them up would have helped them get stronger and after a few weeks you could try taking the support off. Have you or anyone reading this tried that? I also wonder about when to take off the old growth - keep it to give the plant energy from it's leaves or chop them and grow new ones with the energy the plant has. Someone said they grew plants from pieces of stems with no leaves on their alocasia. I loved seeing the progress over time in this video. I would love for you to do an over all general Alocasia care video. I love them, but I cannot afford to buy plants that I may have no hope of growing and I thought that was Alocasias. Now I am thinking I am wrong and I might try one. I'd love to know a good inexpensive one to try. Can't wait for your next video! Thank you so much for all your hard work on this. ♥

  • @brianhardaway9716

Great experiment Fern. I also chopped My Variegated Frydek because I was getting less and less variegated leaves. It had also root rot from being in a glass vessel with no air holes. To anyone using Lecha and Alocasia in glass or plastic pots without air holes the plant is doomed or You have to constantly change the water. So I have stems with no roots but hundreds of growth points which if kept moist will eventually grow roots and start anew. My leaves in Nov. we’re ca. 40-45cm long!! I’ve also found that if given “enough” water, light and nourishment, they don’t go into dormancy. I suppose You can only tell how much enough is is if the plant lives, flourishes, or doesn’t go dormant, the leaves fall off, or the plant dies. I’ve also noticed that by staking the stems when young and extending the stake each growth spurt also helps to strengthen the stems and they stand up. But the main factor is good lighting. Not so the leaves burn but you’ll see when removing the stakes I the plant is happy because the stems will stand like a 1. Your plants look incredible. Keep US informed on the progress. I hope I get more variegation after this experience since I already have a green Frydek but they do grow very quickly.

What do u think about growing alocasia in 40-50% humidity? Is it even worth a try? I do have a humidifier but sometimes the humidity drops to 40%.

Can you use rootone or perlite to get roots on the leaves you cut off?

    • @wildfern

No, leaves won’t root on their own.

The way she gets PTSD flashbacks to the thripocalypse every time she sees a black spot on a leaf 💀 I pray that it never comes back 🙏

That's how I've troubleshot it in the past, but unfortunately this one wouldn't perk up even with a soltech above it. Poor guy was just too far gone!

I LOVE the genus of alocasia, but the constant spider mites just ruin them for me 😢

Don't make fun of me for this... a goddess told me... try not to pass plants and ignore them. They feel disappointed when that happens.
So take advantage man... take advantage... lol (Friday quote)

1:00 I saw a reel by @leafydiva on this topic, basically she moved the alocasia on a spot with less light and the leaves bounced back in no time

      @Sofia-.-7 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't know if that was your case, but generally it can be a good tip if there aren't any other causes for the leaves' droopiness
