I... actually made a lot of the environment work for this game. Sorry, bit of a zombie post. But, the prison was largely based on the Eastern State penitentiary in Pennsylvania. The opening scene, with Torque, did pretty much all the environment there, walls, fences, floors, prison cells... "Where are all the bodies?" We hid them in the vents. Where else are you gonna put them? Then you're crouching through them, traipsing through piles of gore. Had to do some texture research on abattoirs for that. They kinda garnered Stan Winston's name for it, but he wasn't involved. Ben Olson did almost all the weird monster character design. He went on to work on Doom at id. He's such a cool guy! Small, super-friendly, unassuming, everybody loves him. "How did all these just really bad monsters come out of you!?" Hehe. I was at Surreal (which was acquired by Midway, which was subsequently acquired by WB, then they glommed Monolith, Midway, and Snowblind in to one big studio, which... had its assortment of issues) Anyway, Richard Rouse III wrote both Sufferings. There won't be any sequels, or at least, none that I'm aware of. Blackmore was Torque's alter-ego. It was his rage. Craig Blum and I kinda tag-teamed on the environments. I'd make the structural elements, he'd make bits and pieces, props, sets, graffiti. Todd Clineshmidt, Andre Mcquire, and Nathan Cheever did the lion's share of the game design. Programming? Stuart Denman, Greg Alt, Steve Suhy, bunch of others, I could rattle off the whole credits. Tonya Lyle, Scott Cummings on character animation. Brad Shuber was art direction. On the whole, it was a blast to make. Well, the Riot game engine... the toolset was tough for artists to work with. It wasn't buggy or anything, just... hrm... not what one might call intuitive. UDK, Unity, those are easy compared to that. It was a bit more like the early versions of QRadiant, that the first Quake games were made with. Sound engineering was spot on. The whole thing created this atmosphere that keeps you in a panicked state almost all the way through, with some moments to catch your breath. System Shock was a lot like that. The pacing is kinda frantic. I think... part of it, thanks to the storyboarding artists too, was the cues. Like, just hints at what's about to happen, *leetle bitty hints*, a sound, a baby's cry, a needle, blade scratching on the other side of the wall... then, *BOO!* "Ack! A new monster!" Ah well! Fun playthrough! I'm looking at it and I'm just, "Made that, and that, and... oh! That too!" Making artfor these was much more direct. WYSWYG, "What you see is what you get." It's evolved a lot since then, but, there are a few I'd love to see remastered. Drakan I did a lot of the environments on, too.
Do you know if the copyright ownership issues were ever sorted out ? I read years ago that different people were claiming ownership and the ip was left in lingo due to the disagreement.

Midway acquired the rights, when they acquired Midway, then WB got them as just part of the whole package when they acquired Midway. As to what would happen if someone suggested a reboot of it? Who knows? It's not exactly a mass selling franchise. It would be a really cool horror series. Netflix would probably dig it, if all the right people came together and promoted it, which could then be coupled with the game. That's just spitballing, though.
this game gameplay and story was really good in it's time , no micro transactions no bullshit just a good story and gameplay , i remember discovering it when i was playing mortal kombat shaolin monks and i found it's demo inside the game lol i played it and i was hooked and waited for it's release to buy it , good times i swear.
Exactly right and well said. A good game and technically impressive back then as well. On top of that it was all on disc. No additional downloads. No micro transactions. No obvious bugs that needed to be patched. Proper console gaming as originally intended. We CAN go back to those times. We just need to keep putting pressure on developers, publishers and hardware manufacturers

This game and the first Suffering are awesome.The first one is more psychological survival horror than this that is more action-oriented,the psychological element is still very present anyway .So sad there'd not be a sequel most likely,it'd be great to see the third chapter on new consoles.Fuck.
I finished the first game on hardest difficulty but this one was really bad. Enemies take all of my ammo to kill and the special abilities are nearly useless. I gave up after a while.

I think by “game” Blackmore probably means life. So wat he means is that he sees life as a game and that everyone is playing this “game” in their own way.
One thing I want to know is if Blackmore is just a figment of Torque's imagination and is just another one of his personalities, how to characters in the game claim to know him? Like how do those prisoners at the beginning serve someone who doesn't exist?
Blackmore was pretty much Torque's alter-ego, or split personality. A lot of it is left to the player to figure out, so that the moral choices aren't something predetermined. Seek redemption, or seek not just revenge, but control over the system that wronged him, and so many others. I can't remember the entire plotline off the top of my head, but it blurred the lines. It would be well served by a remake, or a continuation. He was battling with his own internal struggles. One side, immense sorrow, leading to empathy for others who'd been wronged, the other, dominate via bringing out the dark sides of others. It's quasi darkside/vs light side of the force, I guess, but it doesn't shy away from things like drug addiction, capital punishment, mass incarceration, draws some from The Stanford experiment, where innocent people were put together in a situation where some were given guard authority, and others were made their prisoners, and the power dynamic. Delves into further history as to how prisoners were used as guinea-pigs in early medical experiments. Became warped versions of themselves. The Suffering amplified those to the 9's, so to speak, but presented it in a very, "Bomb exploding in your face," kind of way. It wasn't really a political statement, more a cultural shock factor. Anyway, yeah, Torque would basically be Blackmore, ruthless leader of the prison riot/breakout, then Torque would try to undo what his alter-ego had wrought, or... be given the choice to become his darker half. Gets prickly. During playthrough, it doesn't really give you a lot of time to stop and think. Lots of run-and-gun.
I feel like Blackmore at one point was a real person. But probably got Taken off the senses by Torque! And the reason on how the prisoners know his name is due to somebody probably posing as Blackmore! Basically continuing his operation since they say they never see the guy in-person! But the real Blackmore still haunts Torque’s mind! The crime boss probes subjected him to horrific things that he probably never can forget! And now..He basically believes that he himself is no better then Blackmore! Basically continuing his legacy of endless murder and destruction. But hey! That’s how I see it!
Something I noticed that is missing from this game A lot of the introductions of the newer ememies Like Gorger, he just shows up with no fancy introduction. And Marksman, he too just shows up. The Suppressors, or the legless one-eyed malefactors, Burrowers, Maulers, and Isolationists also don't have a fancy introduction
I just saw this underrated gem and i was hooked. Btw im at the stage where there is a hole in the ground around 4:06:00 . In my case the cracked road did not open up and the right never triggered a burnt hole on it. What should i do?

You can see this being a lot of inspiration for "Dante's Inferno" and "Resident Evil 5". It is a shame I didn't pick the game up ~20 years ago. I think "God of War" eclipsed it. A game like this, couldn't be made today.

You can see this being a lot of inspiration for "Dante's Inferno" and "Resident Evil 5". It is a shame I didn't pick the game up ~20 years ago. I think "God of War" eclipsed it. A game like this, couldn't be made today.
