Dan Stevens was superb in the American thriller The Guest. Not as well known as Downton Abbey, of course, but he's an excellent actor and did a great job. Best thing Dan ever did was leave this show. Just watch The Guest and see how versatile the man is, from Mathew Crawley to David Collins. As nice as he was in Abbey he’s absolutely terrifying in The Guest.
Dan Stevens of course is a fine actor with looks and personality to boot. I hated to see him leave Downton Abby......But the show was and is still great. I would still loved to have seen him remain on the show....❤
I fell in love with (Mathew) on this film and really really enjoyed watching the show but when his character died, I felt like drinking cold bitter coffee watching the next continued episode.
I was shocked and sad when Matthew Crowley died but the character was too white bread and one dimensional for a talent like Dan Steven’s. I HATED when left… but more because of his BRO-MANCE with Tom Branson than his ROMANCE with Mary. Since then I’ve seen him in some diverse roles where he was fantastic I’m glad he took the risk.
For all who say that Dan Stephens made a mistake by leaving, who else from the cast has had a widely successful career outside from the series/films? Maybe Hugh Bonneville? I’ve seen him in one film I believe. But no one has fared much better than Dan has I think. He did what was right for him and when I think of him I know exactly who he is as an actor, and I don’t necessarily think about Downtown Abbey first.
Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern (as two examples) have plenty of acting roles under their belts. Guessing you'd never heard of Dame Maggie Smith or Dame Penelope Wilton before? I can't speak for all of the characters, but I did see plenty of them in earlier years in Midsomer Murders.
@@monique8641 Dame Maggie Smith is probably one of my favorite British actresses and I have been watching her in films since the 90’s (The Secret Garden/Sister Act) However, her career was established before Downtown Abbey, in fact she carried the film in my opinion. I’m in Jamaica, which matters because while I’d never heard of Elizabeth McGovern or Hugh Bonneville before DA, I do know who they are now but for me they’re totally associated to the film - ie not famous enough to have the same international impact at Smith. Now, I was replying to comments that Dan Stephen’s’ career hasn’t blown up since he left the film (suggesting that he should have stayed) and I’m saying that I haven’t seen where the other actors have fared any better. If someone blinked and never watched Downton Abbey, they probably would never have heard of any of the other actors, Smith excepted, while Stephens has since been in a few films where he might be remembered on this side of the world. 🤷🏽♀️ Update: Never heard of Dame Penelope Wilton before Downton Abbey, in-fact I had to google her to know who you were referring to!
Sybil's death was horrifying and completely made sense in the setting of the show, and I really invested in Tom's storyline. With Matthew, somehow it was so different. I guess I'm 1 of the few who understood Mary and loved her icy heart and how it melted for Matthew. I think I hated the result of his death and the disservice they did to Mary - just when she was running the estate and coming out from under her grief she is blatantly told by the characters and the writer "you must marry this pretentious annoying man" so she married off to a man she never really loved for the sake of getting married. She had more chemistry and attraction to the journalist who mucked with the pigs than a whole season and 2 movies with the guy she married. See, I can't even remember his name. Is it Tony?
Dan Stevens was excellent in the German film: Ich bin dein Mensch. All in German. Not dubbed. It came out in fall 2022. His German is excellent! He plays a robot, and he is marvelous. Try it!
You didn't mention another film he did after quitting DA - Charles' Dickens, the one who wrote A Christmas Carol, I think it was one of his best because that character didn't require him to look handsome, and he did a great job. I also enjoy his character in the TV series Sense & Sensibility. I think he is a versatile actor, and I respect his personal choice. But I think this channel should stop using click bait headline like that. You fooled me.
He seems to be playing roles he enjoys. It's not always about chasing Hollywood stardom but finding projects that are interesting and challenging. And it's not always possible to pursue other roles while doing a series.

Lauren thanks for reply. There has been no news in UK for nearly a year. Thought he looked gaunt last seen. Perhaps for new role. Much of his work we do not get in UK. Would love to see him in theatre. Brilliant actor!
There's no development with the couple happy forever (remember Tolstoy "all the happy families are alike"). Life is one thing, a show is another.
Oh, did not know he was the Beast. But…..he could have written his own ticket if he had stayed on Downton Abbey.
Apparently they were all originally signed up for three seasons to see how DA worked out. In the meantime, other offers came up and he was afraid of being typecast. Same for the actress who played Sybil. The writers stated that if they'd had time to think about it, they may have killed them both off in a car accident.
Watch ‘The Line of Beauty’ - his first mini series back in 2006. He’s incredible in it. He definitely has a gift. I’m sure he regrets leaving Downton considering how huge it became, but I don’t blame him for not admitting it. Although I would admit it. I notice he usually mentions the other projects plus he also followed the advice from colleagues and friends at the time. I’m sure Jessica Brown Findlay regrets her exit from the series.
I was angry when he died off, but he is absolutely awesome no matter what he does! ❤👏 he made the right call
Exactly! He made it through the war and all that, only to take his terminal breath in a ditch by the roadside...:(
What’s he done better since?
He’s no longer a household name
I agree he made the decision to leave I'm a dan Stevens fan I don't listen to negative comments about him I listen to positive comments about him I had a crush on Matthew Crawley
Dan Stevens was superb in the American thriller The Guest. Not as well known as Downton Abbey, of course, but he's an excellent actor and did a great job.
The danger of a long running serial is being typecast, which makes getting work later way more difficult. His contract was ending, he made his choice. End of story.
Won't be subscribing to a channel that uses click-bait, and doesn't do the research into how to pronounce names.
It was not as if he was playing Fonzie.
Why does nobody talk about Dan Stevens in “The Man Who Invented Christmas” from 2017?! I love that movie!
I used not to forgive Yoko Ono. Now I added Dan Steven to my list of Unforgiven Ones 🤠
Welcome to the club!
To be honest with you he should have stayed it would have been a better for him financially and better for his career and it would have developed him personally
Why would someone take a major role in a tv series and not really be committed to the show. I think it’s selfish to the audience and other actors who would of been committed.
He was committed. He did his three years as promised. they decided to extend the show due to its popularity and that wasn’t what he wanted for his career. He had a right to move on.
@@janniegurl05 Naturally you have to finish a contract. He moved on because he wanted to explore different roles. Again, why take on a major role if you weren’t committed to seeing the show through.
@@jerrilynnfagan5505 The same reason people who might work for a company switch jobs. It’s what suits their needs. It’s not about us, it’s about him and his livelihood. The folks who created the show decided to extend past 3 years. He wasn’t obligated to do more.
@@jerrilynnfagan5505 because the original contracts were for three seasons. He completed that contract and was offered other work when the three years were almost up. There was no guarantee at that stage that the show would continue.

In Japan, people graduate from University, go to job fairs and interviews, are hired and stay in that company until they retire at 60. It is called stability and security. Most actors are out of work more than they work. The rest should be grateful.
I hope Dan Stevens is the next James Bond!
I highly doubt it
I'd like to see Tom Hiddleston do it.
I'd like to see Sam Heughan.
Henry Cavill is born to play James Bond
It was written a bit strangely that when anyone had a baby, their partner would die. 🤣 I thought they could've mixed it up a bit with Matthew's death.
When the writers made him walk after he was supposedly paralysed the nonsense was too much for me. I also left Downton after that.Too soap opera for me.
Mary didn’t deserve him, she was selfish, interested, spoiled, arrogant, she is the worst, I so wanted Mathew to stay with someone else.
Lavinia! 😢
She LOVED him.
Hmm I saw her a different way. To me she was elegant, kind, fair, and confident
This dude has gotten so much better looking with age.
I'm so mad Steven left the show, it's not the same anymore after he's gone. The most disappointment was they dont even give Matthew "proper death scene" he's gone just like that, he was pretty big character even bigger than Lavinia and Sybil but everybody else got proper longer death scene.
Why is the fact that Matthew and Mary fifth cousins so creepy? Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt were fifth cousins.
Teddy Roosevelt supposedly told them they were clever to keep the name in the family.
He should have stayed.
What are these weird roles he took on. He should have stuck to time period dramas.
Have you tried google?
Rip Maggie Smith. 🙏🏼What an actress she was. ❤️
If he is uncomfortable he is not forced to stand there. He was the best young actor there
I would love to read the screenplays of those 5 episodes Matthew was featured in that never got produced.
He got the big head... and then... we never heard from Dan again.
Perhaps you should google him and see what he's done since.
Best thing Dan ever did was leave this show. Just watch The Guest and see how versatile the man is, from Mathew Crawley to David Collins. As nice as he was in Abbey he’s absolutely terrifying in The Guest.
I must say, I am quite disappointed in his lordship's decision to leave Downton Abbey.
Matthew did not have a title.
Dan Stevens of course is a fine actor with looks and personality to boot. I hated to see him leave Downton Abby......But the show was and is still great. I would still loved to have seen him remain on the show....❤
The thumbnail had nothing to do with the content. Blatant click bait
"Feminist badasses" "Sexist" ...gotta love buzz words.
If “feminist badass” mean insufferable. Mary became even more insufferable.
Why does the title say “I can’t work with her “? That is not with the video says at all. Very Clickbait.
I fell in love with (Mathew) on this film and really really enjoyed watching the show but when his character died, I felt like drinking cold bitter coffee watching the next continued episode.
He was the best character, he was greatly missed when he died
The show still stayed amazing till the end and the movies. But Dan Stevens really almost fked up one of the BEST shows to ever be made. I mean wow. 😢
He should have stayed!
A great actor.
The Guest was my first film watching Dan Stevens
Biggest mistake / risk in his career.
Google him and see how he's fared since he left.
He left thinking he would cut a massive swathe in Hollywood. Sadly for him....didn't happen.
David Duchovny suffered from that same delusion when he left The X-Files. Luckily for him, they can resurrect you in SciFi.
Very nice people aren't average. They are a rare species !!!
He was one of the best of the show imo
@@monique8641Oh, I see where my original comment doesn’t specify that I was referring to the cast’s post Downton Abbey careers so I take your point.
Michele Dockery has had a great career. She’s had several mini series and has been in numerous TV and mainstream movies.
Ummmm…. How about Lily James, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Penelope Wilton, Maggie Smith …
I never seen him on anything else. 9r if i did i don't really remember. Beauty and the Best was that much success
The biggest I would say was playing David in Legion 🔥
Is it Tony?
Yes. Stayed.😊
Dan Stevens left uk as he thought he was better than anyone else in Downton may he have problems in the USA
Where is he now?
Why don't you google and see what he's done since Downton instead of making inane remarks.
@@monique8641Just wondering, are you Dan’s mom?
@@monique8641
Every actor has a filmography on IMDb. His is not impressive. Quantity, not quality.
In 2012, he moved to New York and appeared in a Broadway show
Dan Stevens was excellent in the German film: Ich bin dein Mensch. All in German. Not dubbed. It came out in fall 2022. His German is excellent! He plays a robot, and he is marvelous. Try it!
Apparently he wanted to leave to play beasts, mutants and robots. How....."diverse"😏.
He also trimmed by at least 15 pounds, stopped bleaching his hair, and showed that he could talk as Americans do. Not bad. @@tessdurberville711
I think Mathew needs to alive after his death i didn't watch further
You didn't mention another film he did after quitting DA - Charles' Dickens, the one who wrote A Christmas Carol, I think it was one of his best because that character didn't require him to look handsome, and he did a great job. I also enjoy his character in the TV series Sense & Sensibility. I think he is a versatile actor, and I respect his personal choice. But I think this channel should stop using click bait headline like that. You fooled me.
NOT WRITER--S! WRITER--SINGULAR--SERIES CREATOR, SIR JULIAN FELLOWES!
Wow, I didn’t know he was ‘the beast’!!!!!!
He seems to be playing roles he enjoys. It's not always about chasing Hollywood stardom but finding projects that are interesting and challenging. And it's not always possible to pursue other roles while doing a series.
Do not miss Dan Stevens a bit
Downton Abbey is definitely bigger than that version of Beauty and the Beast, and his chemistry with Michelle Dockery was beautiful; the chemistry with Emma Watson was nothing like it.
The Beauty and the Breast was trash.
Beauty and the BREAST? Really?
Misleading thumbnail! 👎
A pity that commentary on a British series is voiced by an American. It tends to jar somewhat.
Plus they never get the pronunciation of the names right!
Wow..
He left to do the third installation of Night at the Museum.
Me sentí decepcionada!!!
Where was the, “I can’t work with her” bit?
Dan Stevens is a fabulous actor! Although the only film I like of his is Downton..I couldn't getninto genres I don't care for.
He was mad
Dan Stevens literally shape shifter after downton, i do think he escaped a flytrap
He left to do "Beauty & the Beast".
No, he did not.
Couldn't he have done both? His death storyline worked out well. Hope Dan Stevens will get even more great roles...
maybe I'm living under a rock, but ai've never seen stevens outside of downton abbey. is the presenter herr exaggerating stevens' ongoing success after da?
Terrible decision
So where in all this does it "EXPLAIN" why he wanted to leave, as it says in the description?
I had heard by the end of his contract to do Dickens.
