Victrix Libyan Spearmen, Log 3 (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Multibasing)

  • Today I share the first full block of soldiers I've ever done; Victrix 28mm Libyan Spearmen. I put 27 miniatures on a single base and I am happy with how they turned out. The unit is basically done, I might touch up the base and remove some loose sand.
    These were very easy to paint, and I'll share the paints I used with you.
    (Note, I meant to say the shieldbearer's spear is in a "relaxed" position).

      Yeah thanks; I love the detail and I find the sculpting works well with washes and contrast paints.

    Talk about multi basing, honestly I might considering basing like this if I stay will to the strongest. So much easier to move and transport

    Basing has been a struggle for many wargamers. I am waiting on a set of rules called Hobgoblin which will work great for multi-based minis.

      Nice, I hadn't heard of that game before. In addition to the basing I like that it is miniature agnostic.

    Great project! I went through a similar journey to you regarding basing. I agree the individual basing just doesn’t look like a real body of men. Great job on the Carthaginians! Regarding wargaming those would work perfectly for hail Caesar or to the strongest.

      Thank you. I am really happy I went for a large base. Before I saw your channel I hadn't even heard of the battle of Strasbourg; your armies are looking great. Godspeed finishing them in the final weeks

    A really good looking unit. I’ve been painting miniatures for 30 years and have constantly struggled with the aesthetic look for basing miniatures. A lot of my figures are based individually and set into movement trays to suit earlier gaming systems but I think they always look better multibased. Multibasing gives a better sense of unity and also the figures being part of the landscape that they are fighting in. There are a few rule systems now which support this too . I intend rebasing a lot of my old figures on multi bases. Nice work.

      Thank you, and wow 30 years that's great. Good luck with the rebasing; I had to do some rebasing for this unit since I kept changing my mind, its annoying but manageable.

      @@busydad_painting thanks. Yeah I’ve done a lot of rebasing over the years. It’s actually not too bad once you’ve decided what you want and much quicker than painting.😊 Looking forward to seeing your next units.

    They turned out great, I like how their ranks look kind of ragged and loose which is fitting for a unit of Levy.
    What system(s) do you plan to use these for? That’s always been my greatest reservation with multibasing, though the end result certainly looks phenomenal.

      Thanks. I was tentatively thinking of using them for Hail Caesar or perhaps To the Stongest, but just painting and assembling units is my current hobby.

    Hey, the basing is awesome, how did you do it?

    • @busydad_painting
      @busydad_painting  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. For the material I used two different sand mixes from All Game Terrain, one of fine sand and the other with mixed in green and larger sand pieces. I added just a touch of wash strategically to the base. Used watered down white glue for the adhesive. The squiggly base pieces are from BigRedBat's shop; I should talk a bit more about it in my next video.

      @busydad_painting  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Aye, they've got a mysterious tragedy to them. Its such a shame we've lost all their writing; though we kept their alphabet. I got the plastic box set, and their republican roman set too. I'll see if I can mix them in with the Victrix guys well.
