Victrix Libyan Spearmen, Log 3 (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Multibasing)
มุมมอง 1.8K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today I share the first full block of soldiers I've ever done; Victrix 28mm Libyan Spearmen. I put 27 miniatures on a single base and I am happy with how they turned out. The unit is basically done, I might touch up the base and remove some loose sand. These were very easy to paint, and I'll share the paints I used with you. (Note, I meant to say the shieldbearer's spear is in a "relaxed" posit...

How many miniatures has 15 dollars gotten me?
มุมมอง 2013 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today I'll share how many miniatures 15 dollars has gotten me. These are all about 28mm scale. How I calculated these counts: Number of minis = Number of minis per item / cost of item * 15 I neglected shipping costs and did a bit of rounding so it is not perfect.

Here I share a set of 28mm figures I've been working on, using Victrix kits. I've really enjoyed painting these up so far. I'll share miniatures from the Warriors of Carthage, Armored and unarmored Gauls/Celts, Armored Iberians, and Greek Heavy Cavalry kits I reference 7th Son's Ancient's October videos, you can find the first in his series here: th-cam.com/video/0IliRlXC0l8/w-d-xo.html I think...
Bold miniature painting from Kid #1

Hello. My daughter loves to paint. She especially loves to paint Daddy's little guys. Here I share some of the highlights from her growing collection.
Lesson learned, priming 28mm while humid
มุมมอง 2383 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had an unpleasant experience after priming a set of 20 miniatures in humid conditions. I would not recommend it. I actually tried to strip the primer from the miniatures using isopropyl alcohol and even brake fluid, but they were not effective. It was about 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius) and maybe 70% humidity? It felt very humid.
How did you manage to find that?
What do you mean?
@@busydad_painting How many miniatures has 15 dollars gotten me?
Looks great! Really enjoy the video. Can I ask what the actual base is? I listened to the basing part but dont recall hearing it. Thanks!
Thanks. I got the MDF bases from Simon Miller's Bigredbat shop. I talk more about it in my last video on the iberians
absolutely stunning :) they look really nice all based up together
Thank you
Maybe try geek gaming base ready range for the basing. Looks good, and can put it on the base after you've finished without worrying about getting texture paste on the models.
Thank you for the recommendation, I hadn't seen their stuff before. They've got a lot of options!
Very nice looking unit! What game are these based for or are you just collecting and painting for the sake of that?
Thanks. Painting more for the collection and process, but I might try out Hail Caesar or To the Strongest at some point
@@busydad_painting That is a great hobby in its own right. I was a miniature gamer but dropped it when I discovered hex and counter wargaming. Id like to get back into it but only paint historical miniatures for the enjoyment of it. Debating on what scale to go with 10mm, 15mm or 28mm. I really do like the massed effect you have going with the Celts.
To add scatter grass between densely packed figures I use a pipette with watered down PVA. Its possible this would work with watered down acrylic paint.
Thanks, thats a good idea, not sure if I have a pipette around but my local hobby store probably has one. I'll certainly help next time I use the sand basing
Where did you get these minis from?
Victrix, ordered directly from their site. They have a wide range of miniatures from the classical and roman time period.
Fantastic work, they look fierce and superb, great painting and basing, and the shields are just awesome!
Thank you
Have you considered individual based models on a movement tray? You can make the tray yourself so the edges are level with the tops of the bases. You'd have a slight gap between the bases, but if you paint/texture each base it should blend well
Yes, it is viable way to put these large units together, but for me right now the look and spacing I can get with true multibasing outweighs the practical benefit of a movement tray. I did go down the path of drilling my own base holes in an mdf board. I discuss this in a little more depth and the motivation for my multibasing approach in my 3rd video log on the Libyan spearmen
@busydad_painting Makes sense. Are you wargaming with these?
@@takenogundam1 I might in the future use them for hail caesar or to the strongest, we'll see. Focusing on the journey right now
@busydad_painting In that case, individual bases wouldn't be best anyway! Regardless, models look superb!
First time your videos have come up on my feed. Instant sub. The mix of hobby, artistic and historical detail is just delightful. Have a good one
Thank you, glad you enjoyed
Excellent looking Gauls!👍
Thank you
A fantastic looking unit, well done!
Thank you
Now THAT’S a shieldwall! Looking great!
Thank you Dan
Impressive looking warband. What rules do you play with these?
Thanks Dom, I originally had Hail Caesar in the back of my mind when I first started the project, though I am now curious about To the Strongest too. I've just joined a board gaming group and some of the members are familiar with Warhammer, so at some point I might pitch a game of Hail Caesar. No rush, I'll get there when I get there
Wowser! Great work, but I've never seen so many 28 mm figures on one base (and what a huge base!). Awesome! I'm enjoying your progress and journey, thank you for sharing. Cheers.
Thank you! Having a great time
I'd like to ask you a question. Do you prefer smooth shields so that you can paint as you like, or especially to use decals, or would you prefer there to be a sort of guide with predefined decorative shapes to make painting easier ? I'm asking because I sculpt miniatures, for my Samnites I've left the shields smooth, but I'd like to change that for my next army with the Etruscans, obviously the Senons will come later ;)
Hmmm, personally I am much more familiar and comfortable with shield transfers. I do have a few aspis/hoplite shields with raised and they are easier to paint, but I prefer the flater shields to let me pick a suitable transfer for each individual guy. Good luck sculpting!
@@busydad_painting Thank you very much for your reply, in the future I'll probably have to consider making my shields perfectly compatible with the decals, but also making embossed shields, leaving the choice up to you in short. May the omens be with you!
Sorry, the dimensions for the BRB bases you use? There's many on the store page and I'd like to use the same as you have. 9.5ish cm by 4.5ish?
Yep, I've been placing them in ranks of 2 so the frontage for my blocks of infantry is about 19cm. I've been varying the depth; for my Libyan spearmen and the Iberian Scutarii (shown in this video) I used the FK&P14b bases placed 2 by 2 Thats just enough room for 3 ranks if you place the infantry close together. For a bit more space depthwise you can use FK&P14c bases or even the 14d bases (which I used for the Caetrati and Carthaginian Cavalry respectively).
Very nice! You get bonus points for painting the caetrati´s javelins as soliferrums!
Ha, thank you. They are such a unique weapon
Look really excellent. And the big basing style really suits the caetrati as well. Agema and V&V also do some great plastics and resin for this era - the latter particularly for command figures, which are superb.
Thank you, I did grab some Agema Carthaginians and Romans which I am very excited to build up/mix with the obscene number of extra Victrix pieces I have. I like the look of the V&V miniatures, though I am not as familiar with resin; complementing the plastics with some specialized, high quality figures from V&V is a great idea.
@busydad_painting it's what I've gone for. Mixed in a few of theirs into other units / used them for the command bases. They're actually really easy to work with. X-acto knife and superglue was all that was needed. Nice to chuck some loot ukraine's way as well. Look forward to seeing your agema guys if they are as good as what you've done with victrix!
Thanks, I'll be getting to command bases soon enough and I'll keep that in mind
Fantastic work. I really like the way your bronze is done, has a nice luster. What is your method for the bronze?
Thank you, I use Pro Acryl's Metallic Bronze, and depending on the location/if I want to dull it a little, I put a light brown wash over it
Superb painting and basing, I do like the dynamic poses and the gorgeous shields...Most beautiful units, congrats!
Thanks, those transfers do add a lot to the models
Victrix has quickly become my favorite historical miniatures producer. I have 4 sets of their Vikings, and they are phenomenal. Same with their Romans.
Wow, four sets! The Vikings set was the first I bought, it's a classic
@@busydad_painting Yessir. I used them for Warhammer Armies Project: Norsca.
Lovely progress as always. You’ve convinced me that I definitely need to pick this kit up for my own Carthaginians.
Thank you, great to hear. I think every Carthaginian army needs some Iberians!
nicee, i love the large bases, they really looks like a full unit
Thank you
Great painting. Love seeing this era of miniature wargaming
Yeah, I love this time period
Those look great!
Dang, they look great !!!
Thank you
Growth of a childs artistic challenge is important just never have your work too close to a busy bunch of fingers lol . Keep building your army with odd figures acting as ambassadors making your child feel proud once they're a little bit older as their understanding expands in pre school etc. I'm a grandparent now so my three are now hopefully doing it with the energetic gang .
Carthage had such a magnificent naval fleet are their any chances to feature a ship on ship battle with a ships outline put on paper with the correct marines and heavy weapon some ships had. The history of this period is interesting and a decent book on the period. Good luck for the future painting even if they dont fight a battle for a while long or short !
Thank you. Currently I am focusing on creating the land armies of the period, no grand plan but I'll see where it takes me
Great figures great painting with excellent enjoyable educational back stories! Good luck with the future fighting murderous Roman home wreckers!
Nice video, where did you get those bases from a great size
Thanks, I got the bases from Simon Miller's BigRedBat's shop. The various MDF bases fit together like puzzle pieces and I put four of them together for these particular bases.
@@busydad_painting I have just ordered some.
Where do you get those bases from?
Simon Miller's BigRedBat shop
Wow great miniatures buddy, where are the awesome bases from?
Thanks, I bought them from Simon Miller at the Big Red Bat shop; the various MDF bases fit together like puzzle pieces and I put four of them together for these particular bases.
Really nice! If you want a more war torn look, you could do a bit of weathering on the metals, maybe a darker wash and a few slash marks. Same for the shields. One more thing you could do is lightly drybrush their feet, bottom of tunics and lower part of shields with the color of the basing material (in this case a light sand color). Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the suggestions. I've been thinking about how better to integrate the miniatures to the base visually; and I've got a ton of sand colors that I could use for this sort of basing blending.
@@busydad_painting a great option imo
Awesome work!👍
Thank you
Beautiful job....all the best
These look amazing! This video has greatly inspired me to continue with my ancients project.
Excellent, thank you. I love the look of the period.
Thanks for the shout, Alex, and these are looking amazing. I think you’re selling yourself short on your painting ability, and I doubt I’d be the only one interested in a tutorial from you. You’ve also convinced me to pick up some of those LBM shield transfers to thread into my own unit of Veterans, freehanding really can’t compete!
Thank you Dan, your freehand shields look awesome. The LBM shield transfers can work really nicely, so if you want to try transfers I'd recommend them; cutting out these ones for the central bossed scutum takes a little finesse, but the final product looks good.
@@busydad_painting Hey I meant to ask for your thoughts on how the Agema and Victrix kits blend together?
1000% agree. He did a great job on these models and should be very proud of how they came out. Even the base looks good.
When you build models within each kit, they blend together well in a unit. The Agema kit supports more upright, non fighting poses. I found the cross-kit builds to be a little difficult, at least for this Agema Veterans kit which has very few parts. The bannermen I built here had a Victrix head (which I think are a little bit better than Agema) and a Agema body, and I had to add material to the neck to get the look right.
@@busydad_painting Great to know, thanks for the synopsis!
You've done a nice job on them minatures! Where did you source those mdf bases from?
Thank you, I bought the bases from Simon Miller's BigRedBat shop; they come in smaller pieces that fit together like a puzzle and I glued em together with some backing
@@busydad_painting nice work 👏
look cool bud
Id personally reccomend looking at the Divide Et Impera mod for Rome 2 for some good colorscheme inspiration!
That's a great idea, I had forgotten about that mod and I think it is super popular (I already own the game)
Great Work what are the base sizes ? /
Thank you, they are about 19 cm by 11 cm for the infantry, 19 cm by 13 cm for the cavalry unit. I combined some bases that I bought from Simon Miller's BigRedBat shop, I recommend them they fit together like puzzle pieces
Nice one, just discovered your channel and subbed. excellent painting sir!
Me too mate I love his energy and unique basing in bulk
Hello.Hope you are well.Lovely figures,very nice paintwork.For someone who's only been painting for just over a year,your progress is excellent.All the best.Randolph.
Thank you very much, its been a very rewarding hobby to get into
stunning!, all the different shields look really nice together, especially on a large unit base
Thanks, yes there is a certain quality to quantity
Very nice models 😀
Excellent additions, love hte blue/purple shades on your cavalry and, of course, the gorgeous shields...
Thank you very much. I love that deep bluish purple color
I especially like the cavalry, the cloaks turned out great. Do you have any fully armoured cataphracts?
Thank you. I do not have many cataphracts, just a few from V&V miniatures, though that would be a great unit to do for this time period
Painting looks great to me, don’t sell yourself short. Are you doing to do Roman opposition force?
Thank you! I can't help but see little errors I made. Yes, maybe in 4 units or so I'll start working on some Roman or at least Italian units. I've only got Agema Romans right now, but I am looking forward to building them up and giving them some character.
Love the large bases! Where did you get them?
Thanks, I bought these from Simon Miller's Big Red Bat's shop; they are MDF bases and I piece together smaller bases, which fit together like a puzzle, to create a single large base about 18 cm across
@busydad_painting I thought as much. I knew Simon didn't have that base but never thought to glue them together. Well done!
Thanks. I bought from his shop before I knew he was such a big name in the community
