How many miniatures has 15 dollars gotten me?

Today I'll share how many miniatures 15 dollars has gotten me. These are all about 28mm scale. How I calculated these counts: Number of minis = Number of minis per item / cost of item * 15 I neglected shipping costs and did a bit of rounding so it is not perfect.

Bold miniature painting from Kid #1

Hello. My daughter loves to paint. She especially loves to paint Daddy's little guys. Here I share some of the highlights from her growing collection.
Lesson learned, priming 28mm while humid
มุมมอง 3326 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had an unpleasant experience after priming a set of 20 miniatures in humid conditions. I would not recommend it. I actually tried to strip the primer from the miniatures using isopropyl alcohol and even brake fluid, but they were not effective. It was about 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius) and maybe 70% humidity? It felt very humid.
The Hannibal's veterans set Agema make helps add diversity - they work well enough as Romans, and certainly as allies. Only three poses, but two in mail and one in Linothorax.
And another smashing unit! Looks great
Thanks, yes that's a good point, that kit does add a bit of variety to the range
First class painting, and these gorgeous shields add a lot to these Romans!
Thank you
Wouldn’t be a miniature video without a shield flying off at some point.
Ha
Nice work! Republican Romans are best romans. Interested to hear how the gaming session went.
Thank you! I'll post about gaming soon. Holiday season has been very busy, I've got a couple more gaming systems I want to try
Looking great man, you should do some formal reviews, you have excellent insights. Is it fair to say if you’d pick just one set it would be the Victrix one?
Thank you! To do reviews, I'd have to split my current video design and specialize. Very doable for me, I think I'd do a kit theme, like Hoplites. I would pickup the Victrix ones if I needed to pickup one, especially considering my huge Victrix collection for cross kit building. Have you done any Romans?
@ Nope, not so far. Probably wouldn’t do any in the near future, either, unless they put some more new stuff out.
Great work on these guys! The new basing really has complemented the look of the unit overall. I have only done the Carthaginian Agema kit and had a lot of similar thoughts about it when compared to Victrix ones overall. Looking forward to your Velites too.
Thank you. I think I need to think a bit more about basing generally. This base turned out well. Not saying standardization is the answer. My Carthaginian and Roman armies have this eclectic mix of basing styles, and I don't mind the variety
That’s awesome!
Very nice figures, just subbed
Thank you
You have a great eye for matching colours man! Good job
Thank you!
Extremely impressive work just subbed to take you to 350
Thank you
I like the shield transfer diversity, makes me wish i didnt use the same transfer for entire roman units
Thanks, based upon the Little Big Man transfers, I think it's best if you can buy and build models in bulk, so you can mix designs. Of course, I am just getting started here but so far so good
again nice, but you could save some work if you make the Triari 1/2 the depth of the Hasti and Pricapis . Possible the Triari maniple is 1centuary of triari on the same frontage as 2of the H and P ahd a second centuary of Velites
Ah, yeah in the back of my mind thinking about how I would represent the typical ratio of legionary infantry; makes sense I could make the hastati and principes deeper to accomplish this. I might just double up on those types of units. We'll see!
Great update man, inspirational unit. Gonna be honest, I am stealing that conversion tip for the spear arms, and the shields look great. Soldiers and ghosts is an awesome book, cool to see you take inspiration from that. Looking forward to seeing the game you put on.
Thank you, and thanks for the recommendation again. I am going to ease myself into wargaming, looking forward to it. I've got a few friends and gaming group that would probably try out some games with me. Battle reports are not in the immediate future, there's no way I can jump into 7th son quality battle reports but I'll think about it
@@busydad_painting Yeah 7th son level need serious planning, but take some pics and clips and do an AAR.
Wow, beautiful figures, cracking job...and the shields are amazing!
Thank you
Lookin Great !!!
They look great.
Basing problems like this is why I mount my troops on 1 inch washers. I make movement trays for them that work just fine.
Very nice looking units! Love the kitbash you've done with the Triari. I've yet to do anything other than the Agema Carthaginians. I found they scale up well, but the Victrix ones just have so much more detail. Looking forward to your progress with the Velites you've got left and the new Hoplites.
Thank you
I think the Republican Romans are way more interesting than the later Imperial version because of their varied troop types. Great kitbashing on the Triarii and Gallic skirmishers, i will have to use some of these ideas. My only query is about the size of the Triarii unit. They are often said to be half the strength of the other units in a maniple (60 men vs 120 men for the Principes, Hastati and Velites (I believe these are pronounced WELITES as v is silent in latin). Will you be making the other maniples bigger or having two similar sized units to represent two centuries of 60 men? Just wondering how you will be doing this.
Yup. Weh-le-tays.
Thank you! Weh-le-tayes eh? Good to know. I am not sure yet about the organizational structure of the Romans that I am going to use. I didnt have a particular unit / size of formation in mind; the models are based upon what I can get into that size of base in 28mm scale. I think I'll actually do some Italian allied groups next so I'll have some time to think about this
@@busydad_painting An excellent video on the Republican Romans can be found on Lindybeige's channel. That was where I heard the correct pronunciation.
Cool. Nice diversity of Romans as I gather was historically accurate at the time. Who do you like more of the Agema or the Victrix plastics ? I lean towards Agema. Hey and why no crouching Agema Triarii ?
Thank you. I prefer the Victrix Ancient models generally, because I like their proportions and detail. For the republican romans in particular though, the Agema figures support some nice active poses with pilum or sword. I am considering doing a full Agema only unit soon. I think I am going to save those crouching models for a special command base, I like them but I want all my blocks of men to appear to be on the verge of making contact with the enemy
nice paint jobs , The Gauls with the swept back hair used lime wash to hold in place needs a bit of white on the hair
Hey that's a great point. I didn't even think about their hair products whitening their hair! I hadn't read that quote from Diodorus Siculus. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I do some Gauls
Great looking results! The basing really compliments the figures nicely. What figures did you use for the Carthaginian Noble Cavalry?
Thank you. I used the Greek Heavy Cavalry Kit from Victrix with Carthaginian style heads from their Carthaginian kits. Very simple, I talk about it in my log 4 video
@@busydad_painting Thanks. I'll check that video out. I have Numidians and Gauls as my cavalry for my Carthaginians, but I like the look of the ones you have done. They look really sharp.
Very nice models 😃
Thank you
These look great, as always. I’ll second that the horse painting method sounds neat, I’ll give that one a whirl with some contrast paints.
Thanks, yeah try it out
Just found your channel, very good. Subbed 👍
Thank you
SUperb painting and basing, impressive close ups! 👍👍
Thank you, I am overall happy with the base
I'll try that horse method. Looks v interesting.
Great, I've only tried it with orange and red, but once you get the hang of the shading I think it'll be very versatile
nice:)
look cool
Thanks
Bro they look awesome
Thank you
Awesome, I like the colors chosen in your models I too have Carthaginians I romanized them though, gave them Auxilliary helmets. for my civil war. but now seeing your work I regret my decision. I may repaint or buy another set.
Thank you, I think the Carthaginian warriors set is a very versatile kit
Simply beautiful. Great work! Keep at it
Thank you
These are a very good amazing work
Thank you
When it comes to basing I would fix the first rank into place, put down your basing "mud" just past the front rank, then fix the next row and do the same until finished. I've had the same problem and found this the best solution! A fair bit less cleaning up unintentional mud touches by a wobbling paintbrush!!
Ah, that's a good idea. I think I'll try that out for my next infantry group. Thank you
I just use Gesso now on mine.
Try using one inch washers for single bases. They're flat, cheap and add weight to plastic figures. Single basing also allows a skirmishing force and personalities.
Nice job. I'm personally not a fan of decals. The total formation looks great though. The purpose of the Pilum was to create a casualty in the enemy force. The shield will be penetrated, passed through and strike the man holding the shield.
Thank you. My point on Caesar talking about pilum stapling shields was both for its oddity and that it communicates how these Gauls were fighting in close order. Of course, like you say the javelins have direct effects that Caesar didn't feel the need to comment on
So cool !
How did you manage to find that?
What do you mean?
@@busydad_painting How many miniatures has 15 dollars gotten me?
Looks great! Really enjoy the video. Can I ask what the actual base is? I listened to the basing part but dont recall hearing it. Thanks!
Thanks. I got the MDF bases from Simon Miller's Bigredbat shop. I talk more about it in my last video on the iberians
absolutely stunning :) they look really nice all based up together
Thank you
Maybe try geek gaming base ready range for the basing. Looks good, and can put it on the base after you've finished without worrying about getting texture paste on the models.
Thank you for the recommendation, I hadn't seen their stuff before. They've got a lot of options!
Very nice looking unit! What game are these based for or are you just collecting and painting for the sake of that?
Thanks. Painting more for the collection and process, but I might try out Hail Caesar or To the Strongest at some point
@@busydad_painting That is a great hobby in its own right. I was a miniature gamer but dropped it when I discovered hex and counter wargaming. Id like to get back into it but only paint historical miniatures for the enjoyment of it. Debating on what scale to go with 10mm, 15mm or 28mm. I really do like the massed effect you have going with the Celts.
To add scatter grass between densely packed figures I use a pipette with watered down PVA. Its possible this would work with watered down acrylic paint.
Thanks, thats a good idea, not sure if I have a pipette around but my local hobby store probably has one. I'll certainly help next time I use the sand basing
Fantastic work, they look fierce and superb, great painting and basing, and the shields are just awesome!
Thank you
Have you considered individual based models on a movement tray? You can make the tray yourself so the edges are level with the tops of the bases. You'd have a slight gap between the bases, but if you paint/texture each base it should blend well
Yes, it is viable way to put these large units together, but for me right now the look and spacing I can get with true multibasing outweighs the practical benefit of a movement tray. I did go down the path of drilling my own base holes in an mdf board. I discuss this in a little more depth and the motivation for my multibasing approach in my 3rd video log on the Libyan spearmen
@busydad_painting Makes sense. Are you wargaming with these?
@@takenogundam1 I might in the future use them for hail caesar or to the strongest, we'll see. Focusing on the journey right now
@busydad_painting In that case, individual bases wouldn't be best anyway! Regardless, models look superb!
First time your videos have come up on my feed. Instant sub. The mix of hobby, artistic and historical detail is just delightful. Have a good one
Thank you, glad you enjoyed
Excellent looking Gauls!👍
