Great review! I bet Dave, if you got behind the concept of a kit similar to this with modern materials and new design tweaks, many of us would buy them for an honest price as you always do! Exciting stuff, man!😊
I’m so happy to see this video. Not long ago, I saw this mess kit in a video by Mr. Dyer. Not long ago, you were asking people if they wanted a new version of the boy scout mess kit. I did not remember the name of Mr Dyer’s m-kit, I was going to look for it to propose you to make this model rather than the other one, and today, bang, you make my day. Long live the Pathfinder who restores the legacy of the past.
What a great design, a remake with a widemouth lid and a small 200ml cup that could nest over the lid. All in stainless steel would be perfect. I truly hope you do decide to bring out a "preston pathfinder kit" in the future, id get one for sure. Thanks for sharing
Quite a few years ago, i saw one of these at an antique shop. It was missing the water bottle and the pouch. It was obvious that some part or parts were missing, but i wasn't sure what those parts might be. Now i understand. Thanks for the video.
That's a pretty neat kit. I really like the VDV Soviet/Russian canteen kit. Having two cups which nest onto the canteen and still being able to drink from the canteen is great.
Thank you for bringing yet another practical well thought out piece of survival kit to light Dave this one looks fairly easy to fabricate I just might try.
Mr. Canterbury r u thinking about making Preston mess kit with the changes that u spoke about & yes I would like 2 👀 other mess kits thank u 4 another great video
The stoppel mess kit was mentioned in passing near the end. It was shown in a video on hobo streamlining on the Waypoint survival youtube channel and a later video was done on making a diy version from tin cans.
That boot style closure on the satchel is pretty cool. Makes me want to make a bag like it. I know you mentioned that you were moving in a different direction than the boy scout cook kit. Any hints?
This is definitely the coolest mess kit I have seen ! Agreed that the olny downfall is the thin aluminum. Very curious to see what you come up with for the remake.
If you were to re-do it it will have to be from titanium because it's humongous so stainless steel will weigh a too much. Most people aren't aware of it but Keith has very large round canteens. They are round and they get pretty big - 2L, 4L, etc. If I were to do something similar I'd consider doing round because then the frying pan and plate would also be round... then again, the cooking cup might be an issue so I don't know. Either way the neck and mouth will have to be much bigger. I think the question is what benefit does it have over already existing products (putting aside the cool factor)? I'm not sure. I have the Keith canteen (which comes with the cup and lid) and in all honesty I don't find anything else to be missing. If anything, I'd consider getting another one so I'll have another bottle to cook in, and another cup so one can be an actual cup and one a pot to cook in. As for a frying pan... I don't do much frying in the field and if I did I'd prefer either your new carbon skillet or, and this may surprise some people, a small restaurant level copper pan. I know it sounds crazy to people because it's both expensive and heavy but you really need to try it... it's unbelievable and despite the weight it wouldn't add more than the size of this Preston. I also think this Preston skillet is too shallow. It's very cool. I really love things like this but I'm not sure it's an improvement on already existing products. Dunno.
I love the concept of that something a little smaller (1L?) with a cup, a deep pan and a plate, perhaps. Wide mouth would be great, but don’t know how you’d get that to work. One to think on.
That thing is so friggin cool. I love how compact it is and how easy it is to use their utilitarian very practical. It would be really awesome if “self reliance outfitters”/“Pathfinder” released its own version of this. Very cool stuff thank you for sharing!
If you have the opportunity to train at the Pathfinder School, do it Dave and his group of instructors our outstanding, not just in their skills, but personalities, as well. You won't be disappointed.
please tell me when the Pathfinder version of that Preston mess kit is available. genius. the two halves, pan and lid, I see myself making pizza in and under coals with it already 😀
Hey Dave, use to live in Florida, Tips: Deodorant lots of underarm deodorant, plan on 3-4 T-shirts a day (you'll sweat through one just walking 5 yards) Same for under draws boxers or go commando . Lots of baby powder for your nethers and feet, loose clothes lots sunscreen and depending on if you're in the woods bug dope, also any body of water bigger than 10 gallons might have a gator. Hope that helps ,safe journey . Good luck
I suppose someone could make something like this for the GI two quart canteen. That would give you a 7.25" x 7.25" frying pan with cover, you can put the "cup" on the outside to hold the pan and lid in place. The "cup" would be approximately the same volume as the GI canteen cup.
Ok, only a few minutes in and I'm assuming the new and improved Pathfinder version will be ready for Christmas 2025! I can add it to my new carbon steel skillet! Pans could be a tad deeper, and the handle of course needs to fold to the outside and not have that hard to clean channel.
For the time when it was made, this is an ASTOUNDING leap forward! This is the sort of thing that Indiana Jones should have been carrying in his shoulder bag. So when you bring it back, never mind stainless steel: let's see this in titanium!
Does this mean your going to reverse engineer and re manufacture a modern version Dave, because that thing is awesome. I’ve got a bit of a canteen/Mess-Kit obsession and that system had to be just about the best design ive yet seen. I can’t honestly think of a design that is more worthy of re manufacture today. Hmmmmm stainless or titanium 🤔🤔🤔
...and another great video...the VERY BEST you ever made were the ones on single barrel 12 gauges and the possibilities for black powder with them...bought a Baikal after seeing that...lollol...😀...
Can’t wait to see the pathfinder stainless steel version of this.
I've never seen anything so worthy of a modern day remake/remodel as this piece of kit - it's absolutely superb! ( In stainless steel, of course)
Build one brother!! We will buy it!!
I'm just a gear junkie, period. Doesn't matter if it's historical, or cutting edge. So I always like seeing this type of stuff.
Great review! I bet Dave, if you got behind the concept of a kit similar to this with modern materials and new design tweaks, many of us would buy them for an honest price as you always do! Exciting stuff, man!😊

Dave, that's amazing! Great piece of kit history!
Love it, the word titanium comes to mind.

Nice piece of kit Dave! I would for sure leave one in my bush truck if I had one!

Thank you for sharing and for always going in depth and breaking down the design functions for us viewers 👍🏼
Saw this on Mr Dyer's musings I believe. He's collecting names to see if enough interest to get a stainless steel version made. I signed up.
Quite an innovative set-up!
Thank you for bringing yet another practical well thought out piece of survival kit to light Dave this one looks fairly easy to fabricate I just might try.
Very cool and historical piece of kit. So, when can we expect this mess kit to be available on your site in stainless steel? Thanks. 👍
yeah this is one of those things that once you see it, no matter how good your current kit is, you suddenly want to change things up.
Super cool mess kit! Hope to see a pf version! Titanium would be cool to keep it ultra light
You should try to reproduce this Dave! Of course with the Pathfinder twist!!
Mr. Canterbury r u thinking about making Preston mess kit with the changes that u spoke about & yes I would like 2 👀 other mess kits thank u 4 another great video
First time I ever saw this kit! Thanks Dave
That was awesome. You should make a new one similar.
Nice piece of history
I really hope to see a reproduction of this kit one day. Hopefully honorable outfitters project will kick off. He's got a sign up list on his channel.
Reproduce it Dave. I'd buy one. Love this stuff.
The stoppel mess kit was mentioned in passing near the end. It was shown in a video on hobo streamlining on the Waypoint survival youtube channel and a later video was done on making a diy version from tin cans.
It would be great if you could make something like that I have your canteen kits and love them. ❤️
Nice gear for it’s time! Cool! 👍👍😁🇺🇸
Very cool video Dave!
That’s pretty awesome. Look forward to where this one goes.
Very cool kit.
That's awesome! You know Dave's gonna do it in SS
That boot style closure on the satchel is pretty cool. Makes me want to make a bag like it. I know you mentioned that you were moving in a different direction than the boy scout cook kit. Any hints?

Thank you Dave , I’m an old timer, I was in the scouts an outdoor geek 👍
Cool. Are you thinking of bringing a modernized version to market?
Please do a remake of this!!!! Would buy that in stainless!
Titanium version of this set would be really nice as well.
Could there be a Pathfinder version in the future???
That's really cool, Dave. Thanks for sharing that. Hope that you come up with a modern version. 👍🏻
I like that dial mechanism.

So yeah - a titanium version please! Great design classic atb Andy
love seeing classic gear!
If you made one in stainless I would buy one👍
i know Horace Kephart wrote about this kit, and if this was reproduced i would order one so fast
Dave yall should remake that mess kit I would definitely buy one

Such a simple practical approach!!! Like others, "when's the pathfinder edition coming?!"
Wow! How cool is that.!
Can you make one like this in the Pathfinder kits.
Dave, your company should remake and introduce a newer modernized upgraded iteration of that specific kit, no doubt it would be a good seller.
You should remaster this and make it your next bit of pathfinder kit for me to buy lol
Great video. Thanks
I would like to see pathfinder remake of this
Dave, Just do it, it would be Great
That’s great dave
When are you bringing this out in Stainless Steel Dave. I need this in my life😝
The whole set is really cool. But that pouch, especially the closure for some reason is an awesome idea to me
If you have the opportunity to train at the Pathfinder School, do it Dave and his group of instructors our outstanding, not just in their skills, but personalities, as well. You won't be disappointed.
Carbon steel clam shells, titanium canteen and cup...oilcloth or leather outer sleeve. Like this comment up boys, let Dave see it!!
please tell me when the Pathfinder version of that Preston mess kit is available. genius. the two halves, pan and lid, I see myself making pizza in and under coals with it already 😀
Never used such old school gear. 😅
Cool piece. Thank you DC

Nifty.
Very cool.
I would take two in stainless if you remake them.
Dave is the king
Hey legend , can you bump someone off the may basic class for us
I think there are 3 slots left might check again tomorrow to be sure
You should make a modern version of this. I think it would be a hit.

I look for 4 things in a mess kit:
Frying Pan
Pot
Cup
Container.
That is almost a perfect kit.
I agree with others on stainless steel but for the bottle I'd prefer titanium (ideally ofc) although stainless steel bottle will be cost effective
Yep, that in stainless with a wide mouth would be the ticket
I'd buy a reproduction in a second!
Was this the inspiration for the old GI mess kits and canteen cups/ kits?
You didn’t say where or how to get a replica one.
For the time when it was made, this is an ASTOUNDING leap forward! This is the sort of thing that Indiana Jones should have been carrying in his shoulder bag.

Neat kit would be nice in stainless steel
Well now I want one!!
Pretty cool!
This would be great reproduced in stainless steel. Hint hint.
One made out of titanium would be great.
Who else is wondering when Dave will make a stainless version of this kit?
1ST do more survival archery videos please
Where did you say yall are headed? Brookville fla or Brooksville?
Repaired with lead solder ?
I know you have a made at similar kit from ss. Will you do this one in ss?
Aluminium is ok! Light weight
Aww
I think that you are being shadow banned, I never said see your videos unless I look you up.
...and another great video...the VERY BEST you ever made were the ones on single barrel 12 gauges and the possibilities for black powder with them...bought a Baikal after seeing that...lollol...😀...
