    FOR ME This series answered the age old question of "Does Ramona love Scott?" She does, she says she does, she tries to prove it, but for years she's been doubted by the fanbase. A version where Scott "Loses" and she spends the series looking for him kinda really does show a lot.

      @@dartagnanjames8069 I remember in the comics that they had an easy time starting to date and making out sometimes, because they felt a chemistry between them. But that was just the start of it. Remember how much it took for Scott to say the L Word? That's where that whole joke came from. There's a big difference between dating your crush and being truly in love, a love that stood the test of time and interference.
      Scott and Ramona went through so much more at the end of the comic, it felt like a true payoff. In the series their grand finale is in reality just their beginning. When the fused Ramona told Scott she loved him in such an Ernest way, I couldn't help but think "girl you dated that dude once, you don't love him, you haven't even seen him at his worst."
      I hope if they make a second season Ramona and Scott almost break up before reconciling again, cuz that's what real relationships look like, and that's also what Their relationship looked like in the comic.

      @@NationalistsRuinAmerica My experience with the comics was that Ramona was always a sort of Ambiguous goal post for Scott to reach. I love how they were able to take both parties, have both parties in the wrong, but still manage confront their issues (in unique ways) and manage to come to an understanding. And it’s not just Ramona’s exes.
    Envy Adams manages to find closure in a different way than losing her Boyfriend to Scott defeating him and instead Wallace seducing him.
    Knives Chau manages find herself and build a career with Stephen Stills, and having no hard feelings after her initial rant at Ramona.
    Kim doesn’t get an apology from Scott, but understands what he brings to her life and they sort of let bygones be bygones. Plus, she is helping Roxie Richter after she’s able to find peace with Ramona.

    Having both read the comic and watching this -- let's just say at start of both versions Scott and Ramona deserved each other.
    Also it seemed like we missed out on seeing what really happened in the original timeline future, since it feels like either one or both of their character development didn't stick but we see a lot more of Scott's POV until the literal end

      You sound like you've got your head on your shoulders about this. So before I watch, I have three main questions.
      1: Does it capture the spirit of the 90s? That's what the original comic did so well, and would be the most important strength to retain here. (I'm giving this some kind of chance because Ramona as an object is one part of the 90s I'm not fond of, but that has it's limits the other way too!)
      2: Is Ramona Flowers a complete Mary Sue, or does she also have flaws as the review suggests? This is obviously a more convoluted setting and story compared to the original. (A minus for sure.) But I can live with that if the characterization is good.
      3: Is Scott Pilgrim "Done Dirty" as happens so often in a switch like this? He would need to be on equal footing with Ramona for the dynamic to feel fair. I like the idea of Ramona not simply hiding behind him, but not at Scott's character expense.

    • @symantares9171
      @symantares9171 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

      @jordanscherr6699 1) it definitely captures the feel of the 90's in the references and aesthetic
      2) Ramona is very flawed in both versions, and making her the main protagonist lets it be more visible here
      3) Scott loses some characterization due to being absent for most of the show, but he is portrayed faithfully to the comic from what we do get. At least Present Scott is; Future Scott is almost an exaggeration of what he was, and Far Future Scott came off as completely deranged, and we don't get much of a reason for it besides "Ramona left and he had a breakdown over it"

      I really enjoyed the Scott Pilgrim movie. It's been in my top 10 ever since. So I was initially excited for this new show.
      Before I go further, I did enjoy the show, but have also grown to loath the marketing bait and switch, because of what it hides about the changed material. So I understand why many will abandon it after the first episode or by hearing about what happens.
      But looking past the marketing. It's a very enjoyable watch. Showcasing that Ramona is just as messed up as Scott, and hurt people in her life because of it. They are both imperfect people, but can be the best for each other, while being understanding of the others flaws.

    Honestly I didn’t expect it to be a sequel/subplot but I’m not disappointed despite that. Even though it’s from another perspective I still found it interesting and enjoyed it. I honestly like new things added onto lore as it provides more content, more screen time for other characters, and isn’t just a lazy copy and paste cash grab. If you’ve only seen Scott Pilgrim from the movie I recommend getting into the comics and game as well. I don’t blame the author for wanting to do something different and try to flesh out his other characters and at the end of the day it’s his choice.
    Sometimes I feel like people are too quick to judge everything these days. There’s so much each has to offer and I’m sorry if I sound too optimistic about it but I’m still happy to see a continuation of Scott Pilgrim series. And hey, if there’s a 2nd season we’ll probably see more of Scott Pilgrim himself. I know it’s a bit different from what people are used to but I would still try to give it a chance and watch all of it and if you still don’t like it that’s fine. However as a what if scenario i thought it was pretty fun take to see Ramona take a more leading role as you say having to confront her past/ex's herself rather than hiding behind scott as a scapegoat of sorts.
    I never got the hate with Ramona I absolutely love her and scott as characters they're both lost as in neither of them know what they want, both are very flawed and due to this are both very susceptible to manipulation by gideon in the comics with the whole the glow thing. The comics do a good job of showing neither one is perfect and both are flawed but together they can work through their differences and make it work. which is really how relationships work it's not all sunshine and rainbows and sometimes the relationship sours but if you and your partner take the time and effort to just talk and help the other understand it can work just like it did for them. least that's my personal take.

It was great exploring Ramona’s wrong doings with her exes and both of them coming to terms with their pasts and growing from it. Though the bait and switch is what hinders the show as well because….. you know it’s advertised as Scott pilgrim and shows scenes of him even though he’s gone most if not all season, I wished they could’ve sprinkled him in in some places without revealing the plot twist but that’s just me. Even though yes I’m a little disappointed that the comic wasn’t just adapted in the anime I knew it was going to have differences because the creator Bryan Lee O’Malley even said so whenever he was asked about an animated series with Scott pilgrim, he specifically wanted to be different from the comic, movie, and game. The correct way to do this would be to name it 'Ramona Flowers vs the Universe' (or some other subtitle AFTER 'Ramona Flowers' and MARKET it as such so as to inform everyone coming to see it what they are being 'sold'.
    This is NOT an adaptation... it's something of a quasi-sequel. This was a dishonestly marketed show that's good enough for what it is IF you aren't a big fan of the books (I think it is better for people who never read the books but just saw the film) a lot of character beats simply don't make sense when taken in accordance with the comic book. Like... do we just Ignore that Gideon has his six former ex's frozen in cryosleep somewhere while we're meant to feel bad for him moping at home? The dude is a MONSTER... and we're just meant to pretend like he's not cause the anime is... I guess retconning him... all the side characters are 'mixed around' too much to make space for all this extra stuff that never originally happened and where something like Communities 'dice roll' episode once did an excellent job of portraying a dozen separate realities branching off of an event and how it changes when one person is gone REALISTICALLY to all the characteristics and personalities of those remaining, Scott Pilgrim Takes off simply INVENTS new characteristics and personalities for its side characters to partake in. I'm sorry, but Mathew Patel winning or losing does NOT have any effect whatsoever on who Gideon Graves is BEFORE the fight. We can't pretend like he's actually honestly probably a pretty decent guy if given half the chance. He's got women hidden FROZEN in tubes in his basement.
    The movie sidelined Ramona too much to focus SOLELY on Scott's development. This Anime sidelines Scott WAAAAAAAY too much to focus solely on Ramona's development, and as a result their relationship, forgetting the well enough done examinations of their personal growth in their staring role, is NOT developed at all. The books did a FANTASTIC job of showing TWO problematic people bettering themselves and overcoming their flaws to become worthy of each other... where is that here? It's not. Scott and Ramona don't actually even KNOW one another by the end of this adaptation. They've spent the LEAST amount of time together yet of any adaptation. The 'future' Scott is MORE likely to occur now than ever because now he hasn't gone through ANY personal growth to overcome his problems. Ramona has... but as the BOOKS were smart enough to know, ONE party of a relationship getting over their shit isn't enough. You BOTH have to make it work.

      @ThePhobiephozee2000 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree the anime didn’t showcase Scott and Romona’s arc together but I felt it was pretty upfront about that in the show itself. Like the conflict at the end centered around Romona (literally) asking herself is this guy that I just met even worth it? Speaks to a lot of people’s experience of feeling pessimistic about new relationships after a history with bad breakups. The show explores Romona being realistically jaded and I see all the effort Romona goes through to find Scott as an exaggeration of her feeling compelled to give their relationship a shot. The show ends at the beginning of their relationship which is why we don’t see them “grow” together. It’ll happen in future seasons if Netflix green lights more but I feel the ending reads as optimistic.

    • @lenajohnson6179
      @lenajohnson6179 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ThePhobiephozee2000 It's fair that, if we DO get extra seasons and they DO get around to the two of them growing into a couple that it might recover and get around to being 'about as good as' the source... but at this juncture we don't even know if another season is even intended or not. I can't imagine it's cheap to get a cast this prolific together unless it really is just a ginormous passion project from everyone involved.
      Currently I just cant see this as anything but the worst version of the material. Unlike the other two it doesn't stand on it's own like the others (Like who cares if Scott doesn't defeat Mathew Patel if you don't KNOW he's supposed to... and this show is riddled with this sort of thing that just necessitates foreknowledge). It doesn't have the glorious 'edger wright' sense of perfect timing and plot structure, and it doesn't (currently) approach the same degree of careful character work of the original for anyone except Ramona and a COUPLE of her Exes. I DO hope we get a season 2, I hope that if we do, it's more about the BOTH of them in the way the book was the best of both worlds that we have of that thus far.
      I'm certainly not against more Ramona after how sidelined she was in the films in any way. She's the best part of this version, and if it were called 'Ramona Flowers Takes Off' I'd probably have even fewer complaints... but maybe, god willing, three or four seasons down the line, it'll all feel like more of a complete thing of its own... I'll still always be bummed we'll never get the BEST version of this brought to life onscreen though :(

Ramona is shown to be a lot less cold and abrasive and Scott a lot less whimpering and scummy than in the movie, which makes the relationship between them that much more likeable. I DID NOT like the focus on Young Neil though as the one repeated joke of him being oblivious got real old real fast. This show seemed to have a lot of jokes that fell flat, and became more eye-rolling each time they repeated it. All in all, this season felt like its purpose was to unchain the setting and characters from the source material and set them up for whatever story they want to tell in the coming seasons. So we'll see...

    Gotta be honest, this series really let me down. I’m not saying it has to be a complete adaptation of the original series, I actually like when there’s different changes and twists, but the changes seemed like they were only there for the sake of being changes rather than enhancing the narrative and story. It’s missing a lot of that Scott pilgrim charm and I believe a lot of that is due to Scott’s absence. The plot about finding him just felt flat and uninteresting. I like the idea of the exes accepting the past and moving forward, but it felt very repetitive and shallow tbh. The thing that bothers me the most, however, is the way they advertised the series. It was just false advertising and I hate that.

    I kinda saw this twist coming when O'Malley said this wouldn't be a 1:1 adaptation as, 'anyone can read the comics anytime', but I wasn't expecting just HOW different it would be. I personally see this show as "Ramona Flowers Takes Off" but it was still cool to see new adventures coming from old characters and it still stayed true to the spirit of what the Scott Pilgrim books were all about. So this, to me, is a welcomed edition to the franchise that can stand as its own story. Just wish there was more of the title character, but that's all.

    Really loved it. Was pleasantly surprised when the story diverged from the original story, and it honestly made me enjoy the series a bit more. Having the show follow the characters on an original, unique story allowed the fans to be able to explore and learn more about the characters, and I personally appreciated seeing how the characters interacted with each other.
    It's not a direct adaptation from the books, nor does it follow up the movie, but that honestly was a great decision: to expand on the lore and universe in a unique way rather than retread the same story. I know some would have preferred that it was a 1:1 adaptation of the book (because the book series was AMAZING), but honestly once you get over that, it becomes a genuinely well-written, visually appealing and enjoyable expansion to the Scott Pilgrim lore, that truly feels like the writers nailed the humor, pacing and visual storytelling of both the book and the movie and even the videogame.
    Personally, with me having wanted more from the Scott Pilgrim franchise and story, it makes me hope and wish that more people will watch it, give it a chance and rate it highly, so we can get a few more seasons before Netflix inevitably cancels it solely for being another animated project. 😔

    I honestly loved the show from start to finish, visuals, voice work, animation, references, humor, and even more so the story, it was not what i expected but i welcomed it, while its not a 1 to 1 with the comics, it helps in fleshing itself out more in a way that a regular adaptation would be unable to do so, and would bring a different issue, the classic and usual "source vs adaptation" discourse of "why this was better than the other and you should or not waste your time, etc", and instead, gives us a complemetary work that serves to expand more on an already stablished world, if someone writes it off as "unfaithful, false marketing", pal, let me tell you, you are being delusional and havent gone past episode 1

    the most impressive aspect was the script's balancing across the entire ensemble cast
    it reminds me of how The Sopranos would regularly shift the focus of the storyline away from Tony
    almost every named character has a character arc with at least a B-story plotline
    the exceptions are maybe Stacey and the Twins, but they were even more sparse in the comics and movie
