@@RailwayScholar Gordon Goose is still evil. Do you think he still has his ex's on ice in this version? Or probably not since it's more based on the movie?
@@dartagnanjames8069 First of all, why the hell did they rename him? What was the point of that? And secondly that's a good question and probably just another plot hole that the writers didn't care to fill.
@@RailwayScholar I feel like there's season 2 potential. The plot twist was a neat move but Scott gets robbed of a lot of his personal growth. Lisa's lingering feelings would still be a thing. Kim's lack of closure is probably still a thing, and she just lost her job so she might still move away. Most importantly Stephen Still's needs an episode to realize he's Gay. There's a lot more they could work with.
@@dartagnanjames8069 Yeah, all that, and the premise itself is so rushed and broken. The anime gave us a Volume 6 style finale but without any of the buildup. The whole point of The Scott Pilgrim Comic was seeing two young adults freeing each other from their vicious circles of heartbreak and denial, and growing as a couple. Ramona did all the personal growth of like 5000 pages of comics in 8 episodes of anime. Neither did Scott get his portion of personal growth Nor was he present when Ramona improved as a person. What motivates these two to even be together? They didn't go through months of hardship together, they JUST MET. They should've just adapted the comic 1:1. It has the best of both the anime and the movie, it's literally the perfect way to tell the story.
10:47 they hadn't died in the comics. The author explained in an interview that, after being defeated, the exes respawned at their homes, having learned their lesson, and that they don't go after Scott afterwards because they all live in the U.S. and "going to Toronto is such a hassle"; an explanation that IS canon to this show as future Scott repeats this same information and is friends with the twins. On a side note, the twins got shafted character wise for another adaptation
This reminds me of how the comic actually had a _checkpoint_ appear to Scott at some point, implying that if he'd managed to nab it (which he wasn't able to in time) he'd have just respawned _there_ after Gideon killed him rather than all the way at home. Perhaps the Exes saw checkpoints of their own before their battles with Scott and just didn't bother using them (either due to overconfidence or, like Scott, not knowing what they were looking at)? 🤔
As someone who is going through the passport process currently to go from USA to Toronto, can confirm: definitely a hassle. Especially if it’s not a necessity.
@@riakun yeah, even in the comics most of the exes only went to Toronto on occasion if they had another business going on (Lee filming a movie, Todd had a concert, the twins were invited to a party, Gideon hosted an event). Only Matthew and Roxie went there SPECIFICALLY to kick Scott's ass (and even Roxie had a secondary goal of rekindling her relationship)
@@floricel_112 Haha, actually, the comic says that Roxie got there because she's an artist and happened to have an exposition at a local art gallery in Toronto They all had something going on there, except Mathew
There is no such thing as everyone unanimously agreeing about anything, especially in fandoms. Shhhh, did you know there are people who don’t like The Rise of Skywalker!? 😱😱 I know!! I was shocked too!! 😜 But I do agree with you about the art style 👍👍
Lucas Lee was easily a standout in this one. I loved the changes to his character. And the fact that they managed to give everyone's relationships closure with eachother without anyone dying was great.
one detail i absolutely adored was the hair dying scenes at the start of most episodes. it really does a good job of signifying that, yes, this is ramona's story, and while in the other adaptations her hair would just inexplicably change color and you just have to deal with it, here we're taken through EVERY color change, step by step, as we're following ramona this time.
**SPOILER AHEAD** And some hair colors even made sense with the storyline. E.g. the ones after Scott's "death" had a darker color. After she discovers that he is, in fact, alive, the colors start to get brighter, as if she had reborn inside. Brilliant.
Just a complement: in the last scene we see Ramona dyeing her hair "white", the brightest color of all and, for the first time in the series, we see her actually happy (thus, bright), and right after she leaves with her new friends and boyfriend, Scott. Basically, she feels happy for the first time after he left. Isn't it a brilliancy or not?
it is, but its a skip another trojan horse show using the brand name to then not be the brand never about what u can stand, you can stand a lot, its about a standard you should have its another waste of a opportunity to make the actual remake it should of been, its a skip
The biggest thing that i like about the show is how it made Ramona confront her exes rather than let Scott do that with violence. They all have flaws but the exes stayed bitter because they lost communication with Ramona who keeps running away but when they finally got that chance, it made Ramona realize that she cant always run way from her problems. This gave so much depth and more character to the exes especially with Roxie and Lucas Lee.
Really hoping they address Scott's past in a season 2. It could give Envy, Kim, and Lisa some screen time and development. If they do that, it may make Scott and Ramona's relationship more believable than either of the other mediums. (EDIT: I know we don't "need" another season. I'm just expressing my hopes that they'll do more since I loved the show.)
That's my real hope... the main thing that currently holds the show back for me right now, is that the books do such a good job of illustrating how BOTH Scott AND Ramona basically 'earn' one another by growing up and deciding their relationship was worth sacrificing their own selfish 'comfort' problems for. The movie still does this for Scott, and this show still does that for Ramona, but thus far ONLY the book does it for both.
@@KingHeavyMetal I honestly would be okay if this was the only season. I loved it. But I trust that they could still make an incredible follow-up, and both could be perfect.
As someone who only ever watched the movie, I DID NOT expect Matthew Patel to become one of my favorite characters, my precious Wallace is still number one but I have never enjoyed a flat arc character as mush as I enjoyed Matthew. Lucas Lee ended being somehow even more badass, and I'm glad Ramona isn't just there in the plot, she's front and center and I love that
same same same. The only thing that I disliked a little is Scott's and Wallace's relationship, as someone else already commented on. I felt like even in the movie they weren't as distant as in the anime, but if there's a second season or another project that follows up on this season, I hope they'll portray their friendship differently, as i actually really liked the portrayal of their friendship in the movie. Aside from that, I FUCKING LOVE THIS ANIME AND I LOVE MATTHEW PATEL
they're fanfic ideas that sound interesting but really aren't in our heads they wound interesting til you flesh them out and realize they're just pessimistic
“Ramona would finally confront her shitty past to then realize she probably hasn’t changed in the future causing scott to become another evil ex” so stupid
@@Saintdidntdoit She didn't change because in that timeline she didn't confronted her ex's , in the new timeline she did so personaly there is a chance she does change, that's the plot of the show how did you miss that
One thing I really missed from the other iterations of Scott Pilgrim is Wallace's best friendship with Scott, Wallace being somewhat distant from Scott made me a bit sad
Yeah, he's one of his best friend but even if the comics he was never a good friend. Just like the movie he was always trying to kick scott out. He's the A-hole friend. That just so happens to be the closes relationship scott has.
@@FexyVRC in fairness, can you hold it against Wallace that he wants to kick Scott (a freeloader who doesn't pay rent, barely owns any of the stuff in their place and uses his money) out?
@@floricel_112 yeah, totally reasonable to try to kick him out. He's just written as the mean best friend. That will secretly stick up for scott. Sorta like we see in the movie.
I think they were going for "he likes Scott but keeps that to himself after he dies" as an angle and it just fell a little flat. His whole relationship with Todd started because Todd was dressed as Scott, and there's lots of ship tease between the two. (Such as Scott being Wallace's sugar baby, or the scene where they almost implied that Older Scott and Older Wallace were married before faking it out with a "his husband works at Nintendo" joke.) Scott/Wallace ship tease has always been a running subtextual joke in the series, but it's also just straight up implied that Wallace has a crush on Scott. In the comics we see their first meeting, and it's a 1:1 match of Scott's meeting with Lisa, his first love interest, as they both show up at his house and say the exact same lines. But the series never goes into it, and so it's always left Wallace feeling a little shallow in every iteration.
to me, the Gideon thing made sense because Ramona's flaw isn't "running away" at all. Ramona's flaw is choosing to date people who she thinks are inferior to her. whenever Ramona chooses a partner, it's usually someone who is pathetic in some way, and has the potential to be completely obsessed with her. she likes feeling needed. and the problems with this are myriad. for exes like Roxy, being treated as inferior is actually really painful. and when Ramona leaves, it feels like she was most afraid of Roxy improving, and realizing that she could do better than Ramona. so Ramona dipped before that could happen, because she's scared of dating an actually good person. for exes like Todd or Matthew, Ramona is idolized like she's the best thing that ever happened to them. and that is simultaneously flattering and pressuring. Todd literally punched a hole in the moon for Ramona, which she found horrifying. as soon as these guys got actually irritating, she left. but they were fanatical enough not to let it go. but then you get to exes like Gideon, or to some extent, the Katayanagi twins. the twins were both trying to date her because she was younger than them, and they presumed she was inexperienced... so she two-timed them as a sort of power play. it's right in line with Ramona's whole pattern. she loves feeling superior. but with Gideon... she found an actual bad person. actually, given his pathetic beginnings, and the way he remains obsessed with her after she leaves, Gideon is kind of the whole package for Ramona. basically, if you go around looking for people to date who are worse than you, sometimes you find an actual bad apple. and no, this doesn't qualify as the hardship of that being "Ramona's fault" or anything... but it is a bit of a wakeup call, that not every idiot that she thinks is pathetic, is actually harmless. Ramona's struggle with Scott is to choose someone who has room to improve himself, and actually let him improve. to hope for his improvement, and actually help him along the way. that's how Ramona herself will improve... by making a decision that's good for both of them.
As someone who hates how modern movie marketing/coverage spoils important twists/cameos months or even years before you watch something, I loved that this show's twist actually managed to surprise us. I don't mind a good bait-and-switch as long as it's in service of great storytelling.
I and my girlfriend went in without any knowledge of scott pilgrim and we both loved just how wacky it went and how emotional it was. Very enjoyable overall
@@tvirus9369Not this. Clearly, even people with no past knowledge of the series have enjoyed it. Just because they changed the story doesn't mean that it wasn't well told. This series is at LEAST on par with the movie.
Don't let these responses skew your opinion of older content. I definitely recommend you check it out because it's all just as fun and interesting as this series!
Funnily enough, scott literally TAKES OFF in episode 1 so the name makes sense. If they were gonna do a 1 for 1 adaptation they would have just called this scott pilgrim vs the world. I put the blame on the marketing division for the bait and switch feeling but i still enjoyed the new experience overall. Especially how they flesh out the side characters instead of making them one note villains who die and are never seen again.
I don’t mind the bait and switch. It hides the overall fact that it’s a time traveling sequel, and it makes the twist more unexpected, bringing more intrigue into the story.
Love how at first Scott had to put in the work to be with Ramona, but now Ramona is put in a situation where she has to make an effort as well. Their relationship didn’t flourish because they both were incapable of communicating properly, but perhaps now after seeing how bad things can be and witnessing how hard they each worked to be together, they can actually make it work.
Considering the original was based on a lot of events in the authors life, including meeting his eventual wife, I think the Netflix series was inspired by the fact he has since divorced his wife in 2014, and his reflection on everyone over the years. Being as old as even older Scott, I definitely fantasize about changing the past sometimes. Thanks to quarantine and wfh letting me work out, I'm also stronger than I've ever been lol.
i'm having a battle in my head over a potential season 2, cause on one hand the story is done and it's really good, no need, but also i desperately want more time in this world with these characters as they are, because my favourite thing about this show is that i can disappear into the world and forget that it isn't my own reality, and i need more of that
Is it done? Ramona is a developed character, but scott? He’s still the same start-of-story piece of shit Scott. Leaving it where it is now, Ramona’s dumpin’ en because he’s still gonna be raising the ‘possible evil ex’ flags and being a total nothing-person due to missing any chance to grow lol.
"To some, this may seem like the set-up for future installments, but O’Malley insists that it was a “fun little parody of post-credit scenes.” But don’t be too dismayed, as the creator added, “If we ever did magically get to make more, maybe we could play with that idea… But it really was just something we threw out there as a fun little thing. And it does end the story arc for those two, now they’re together.”
As someone that only had vague knowledge of the source material, I absolutely loved every second of it! I'm a big fan of New Game+ style stories that result in characters ending off better than the OG timeline, while still acknowledging that the OG did happen. I'm praying we get a 2nd and 3rd season to explore these characters further. Most interested in seeing if being humbled the way he was results in Gideon becoming way less bad than he originally was, or if he'll still wind up just as bad if not worse than the comics.
that's what they should've called it, "New Game+' instead of "Takes Off" doing that would imply this wasn't going to be the story fans were expecting, which may have helped ease some of the negativity, regardless of how justified it is.
@@willfanofmanyii3751 yeah... but then it wouldn't have been a surprise, and it was said (I think) that the series wasn't going to be just a retelling, so there were hints
This show scratched a very particular itch of mine by having the intro boss beating the final boss and making it big. It being Matthew Patel (my favorite evil ex for his EVERYTHING: despite being an evil ex capable of being over-the-top with his excitement, bollywoodness, demon hipster chicks and mystical powers, when he gets thrown for a loop he drops the attitude and shows more aspects of his personality like how he's awkward, a little meek, yet very polite and formal, doing things very properly and official by informing Scott of the situation twice. He's very dorky in a cute way) absolutely demolishing Gideon Graves (who's just THE WORST) with his new indian war god form is just the ICING on the sweet strawberry cake. Like, I LOVE Matthew with all of my being and HATE Gideon with a burning passion
Im glad I'm the only one who WASN'T thinking about Gideon's actually supposed to be like. Like in this iteration he seems a bit weaker I guess like physically maybe the Video game version of Gideon Graves was like physically very weak in his real body but like dude had 3 fake versions of him.
@@nicholasaugello2534 Gideon is like his movie self where he's only a decent swordfighter (where in the game swordfighting is ironically the only thing he DIDN'T do personally as he pulled a Wily)

@@floricel_112 they did downplay just how horrible of a human Being Gideon was meant to be but because he got defeated so early he didn't get to properly display how conniving he really is. And part of me thinks that he didn't think Mathew Pattel was even that strong.
As someone who watched this without having read the comics or watched the movie (only knowing some stuff of Scott Pilgrim through osmosis) I personally never felt lost or like I didn't understand what's going. I think the series is fine for a newcomer to enjoy and even understand, even if later reading the comic/watching the movie will probably help you understand it more (I also accidentally spoiled a friend that had read the original comic on Scott's death without knowing it was a spoiler lol) EDIT: Why are people reading the comments on a video that outright starts with "There will be spoilers"?
Loved all the game integration including the different games with Lucas' skating opening, the random documentary style ep to play up on the camera work. They play so much with the animation.
Between Ramona being the secret main character and the fucking amazing animation, I loved every moment!! I would like to thank my ex for officially getting me into scott pilgrim which saying it out loud I realize how ironic that is
I'm happier that Ramona actually has to deal with her exes, not Scott. I would've preferred that Evil Scott went back in time and captured Scott, having Evil Scott get stronger every time Scott held his tongue and emotions from his relationship with Ramona, to try to force him to communicate because it also causes pain to Evil Scott.
I was so confused when episode 2 kept playing out normally. I kept expecting the “dream sequence” to end and reveal Scott was alive. Once I realised it was much more enjoyable. Whilst I wish we got more Scott I adore that we got more of the side characters. The ex’s getting closure was great. More Wallace will always, ALWAYS be appreciated.
Am I the only one who really wasn't that interested in the exes and their woes and instead wanted to see Scott and Ramona grow closer as a couple instead of just deciding at the end that they're made for each other, because of... sparks or something? The anime tried to put the same amount of emotional finesse into the anime ending as the comic finale had. But in the comic finale Scott and Ramona were a couple for over a year. The comic makes everything so much more believable and impactful.
I had seen the movie, and my uncle owns all the books and loved the film, so this isn’t quite what we were expecting, so later we dubbed it “Ramona Flowers Takes Over”
Given how the Book, and Film have slightly different endings messages. I'd see this as getting the "Final" ending after beating the other levels in a Sonic game.
I mean, I hate to be the Sonic guy here, but in most of those games you don't unlock the final ending by doing all the levels, but by collecting all the chaos emeralds
@floricel_112 please be that Sonic human, bonus because of the joke in the show about a sonic 'fun fact' I suppose specifically, I ment Sonic Adventure 2: Battle 😅

As someone who didn’t read the comic, I think the even older scott makes sense with what we know about him from the show. He is immature and fails to see his wrongs and I think what Scott needed was to see this side of himself hurting who he loves to grow. I was a little confused at times but I really enjoyed it, very funny, well animated and overall intriguing story.
i agree with this stance from the show but having read the comics (spoilers) scott actually realises his mistakes and becomes a better person so its sad for me to see that erased 20 yrs later and him revert back completely
The fact that Ramona get's the "sword of self-love" this time, cause then it means they'll have a healthy relationship, unlike with the other 2 from the future, where Scott thought that needing a time is the same as a divorce
I agree. The evil three laughing at the end is just their happily ever after, no need to expand on it. I also think framing future-scott's actions as a backslide is better than what my friends thought of as the growth not sticking. All in all, this got the most "if you want the original story, it exists" reactions from my friends in the watch party. I do love the idea of scott pilgrim being a pseudo-universal story like hamlet where future writers and directors can rewrite the story focusing on different characters
@@floricel_112 not really, i wish at times that too, but this series gives us something new and a new side to the story while the comics are the comics, they are still kept intact And here si one thing, the fact that every iteration of Scott Pilgrim being different, gives place to a different type of discourse, like, go to discussions of some series like say, Naruto, One Piece or others like certain Marvel comics, and you will see a constant discourse of "comic/manga did x or y better, anime was better, etc" but in itself, most of the times its just the same story, dont get me wrong though, i love regular adaptations, but when you get something that treats with respect the source and makes its own take giving it more depth overrall, im all down for it, big example being the first Castlevania series with its 4 seasons, it gave a new take on the story and took the viewers and source with care to show something more formative, same with SPTO, it takes the cast we know, and give it a spin while still revolving around Scott, its fun, is good and i loved it for that
The original story (which is better) exists but isn't animated. All I wanted was the best comic I've ever read to be properly animated and voice acted. Instead I got a fever dream time heist that I will never ever accept as canon.
Speaking as someone who’s only ever watched this show and nothing else Scott Pilgrim related: I would’ve liked to see more of Scott and some more proper development for him, it kinda feels like nothing really changes for him. I think Gideon is actually a good character isolated in this show not knowing the context of exactly what a dick he was. Same with all the evil exes. Ramona is wifey. That is all.
@@jp3711nc1 That’s what I would want to see too. Could be more slice of life and relaxed with fleshing out how Scott is careful not to become his evil future self again and how he deals with problems properly
Scott's character has been explored to death at this point. This was a perfect way to have a fresh take on the material without just redoing the same story again.
@@skyhunter2816 Cool, but theres a lot of people who have no idea of the original story and would love to get to know that outside of youtube videos lmao.
Well, I think this is one of the first times where the "please go and watch the show first" spoiler warnings has been emphatic and positive enough that I'm actually going to follow it hahaha
That is literally what I did I was going to spoil myself but then he sounded so serious so I was like nah I'm going to watch it first took me three days to do too, worth it.
It's been three days, I read all the comics, watched the movie, binged the series, and I'm so ready for this review. I hope he mentions that Kim Pines deserves more, because she totally does
Its a little too bad that Stephen never got to meet Joseph(He's a background character somewhere in the final episode) but at least its really nice that he and Knives(love the sibling like relationship) are trying out things for their band.
I really wish they'd just marketed it as what it is... If they have a season 2, they have a chance of still doing what the books did in more depth but better (I.E. the two of them dealing with their stuff together) Alas as it stands, while the show ABSOLUTELY does do what the film fails to do and really delve into Ramona... she does still deal with this stuff in suitable and impactful ways in the books but with a bit less detail than here... but SCOTT goes through NO development and IMO is currently more likely to become 'future scott' than ever.... but that's only an issue if there isn't a season 2 that can better act as a show about the two of them doing what they did in the books... and really earn one another...... and I agree on Gideon completely... I guess we're meant to just assume he's been retconned........ that's a part of my biggest gripe with this show. It's not JUST a reshuffling of the source material predicated on changing a single pivotal event, it's one that sort of rearanges the CHARACTERS involved not just AFTER the event... but BEFORE the event too? Here's hoping we get a second season that can better flesh out some of this... like with Scott actually IN the show, he can start going through the growth he missed out on and maybe act as a canvas against which Ramona can work out which of her exes deserve apologies for the way she treated them... and which ones she was just WISELY escaping.
@@JasonDeline Im sure people probably did want to see one of their favorite comics animated like this yeah, I dont get why people say "u want the same story?" That said Scott pilgrim takes off was good
@@coal159 Well, we got the Manga, movie and videogame already, so I'm glad we got new content. Especially since it helps redeem Scott and fleshes out the other characters. That first episode had me thinking it was going to just be the movie shot for shot, but was pleasantly shocked at the end of the pilot. Binged the series over two days. Very happy. 🤘
It says a lot about Scott's character that if he were to die, the only other person in his circle (besides Knives) who would care is the one who spent the least amount of time with him. I do like how Ramona was able to gain closure with her evil-ex's and I can already see a lot of potential videos being made out of this series.
Actually watched an American Dad completely by chance last night where Klaus runs away, and 20 years later everyone gets a funeral invitation,.and literally nobody cares because of what a creep he was. So hearing your analysis has me wondering if that episode was actually an inspiration for this thing. 🤔
Mae whitman gave the anime type voice acting without over doing which shows how great shes been in voice acting, since that's how she started her acting career
I actually like that they completely omitted ANY of the bi-erasure of the original. Ramona does not once mention that her relationship with Roxy was just a phase! The story does not lose anything for it, if anything it makes the relationship feel more real and the same is true of the emotional impact of Ramona breaking Roxy's heart
I'm obsessed with this series, it's so good! Glad you liked it, saw some early hate for it and was worried there would be more of it going around. Agree with everything you said!
Each version is it's own thing, that's what the creator said. He finished the Movie script and game script before he finished the comics. Each one has it's own ending and breaks near the middle. And each version is Cannon. So there's that. Like the Movie is what's suppose to happen, The game is how Ramona see things. The Comic is scott's version. And the Netflix version is just an ALT.
If they did a season 2 for this show, have it just be a slice of life following these characters. Show Scott and Ramona trying to have an actual relationship, and flesh out some of the non evil exes. Overall tho, loved the series and if this is all we get I'm still happy.
As a person who has read the comics and wat hed the movie multiple times, I loved it. I pretty much have the same take on it as you did, personally I would say it is definatly a great addition the the franchise as a whole
The third episode was probably my favorite tv episode I’ve seen all year. It’s so great in how Ramona reconciles with Roxie and seeing her side of the story and how much she meant to her it actually got me quite emotional. Also No Account video is one of my favorite settings in the comics and seeing Hollie be there was amazing since she was my favorite underrated character
It still makes me so sad how Stephen didn’t have enough screen time. He is a side character in the comics too but like you said, he had his own little arc. I finally wanted to see Joseph. 😭
It feels like a sequel to both the movie and the comic. I would recommend reading the comic, watching the movie, and then watching the show. They almost all complement each other, each one focusing on different characters and themes.
The reason the twist in this worked better than in he man is because Scott Pilgrim has a game a comic and a movie the story has been told three times already I actually liked how this was a stealth sequel to the original continuity
Yeah like as much as I miss some of the comic exclusive fights, there would have still been people mad if this anime was just like the first two volumes word for word so you can't please anyone. I'm glad overall that this was a reboot/spiritual movie sequel bc giving it the typical anime adaptation treatment would mean we'd never see everything we wanted anyway.
You call is clever, I call it purposeful misleading. If people knew Scott wasn't the MC they'd be pissed. They purposefully marketed it as an adaptation of the comics. It was not.
@@jase276 the crew said in interviews that it was different from the comics. None of the marketing really suggested otherwise. And again, another big hint was the title, as it isn’t the title of any of the graphic novel volumes, unlike the last adaptation.
Honestly, I was kinda bummed about the twins not getting as much screentime as well, but then I realized something. This whole show is built on subversion, and by the time we get to what we think is gonna be the twin's episode, we've kinda fallen into a rhythm built by the initial subversions. So they subvert that expectation knowing we probably won't be expecting the twists to be compounded upon like that. And while I will admit it is kinda anticlimactic to have the twins just be okay with Scott and Romana and just kinda chill out in the background, I can't deny that it was a really clever move from a structural perspective
I loved all the time we got with the exes & other 'side' characters. It was way different from my expectations. 😆 I hope they focus on Scott more next season.
I think we can all agree that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off can truly be the end of the franchise. So much love was put into it, and realistically, its Bryan O'Malley's love letter to the franchise that addresses the biggest complaint that most fans had. Like you said, that Ramona gets no development
Incredible show loved all of it the hope is that season 2 focuses more on Scott’s past and really allows us to focus on characters like Kim, envy and Knives more
I kinda just want games of the adventures that old Scott went on that eventually led onto what would have been their divorse. Their ACTUAL RELATIONSHIP is the main thing that this series ends up NEVER touching cause it sticks to its roots in being a big anime reference. The movie, comics and series end with them "being together" but then that leaves the people who understand the BASIC CONCEPT that a kiss isn't a fleshed out relationship and that there needs to be actual character moments and reasons for love and personality traits that intertwine and are shown doing just that without immediate halting or punishment for simply being together. The series does everything right for every character except for Scott and Ramona (and knives but im pretty sure they didnt wanna get DOUBLE cancelled. Lets really talk about it) by simply ignoring their relationship AGAIN. Don't get me wrong, it was COMPLETELY in Scott's character to just ignore the past 13 years, forget all about it and what it meant to him and move on, but to not even have an internal moment of reflection on future Ramona's part feels like blatant disrespect to the people who wanted actual depth and reason to WHY they love eachother rather than just cause kiss at the end or pretty gurl meet funni boi. They get into what made them NOT work, but not what actually kept them together for the 13 years in the first place. While more time is given to them in the comics, lets be honest. The comics AND movie *both* end with them basically JUST beginning to seriously date. Nothing is done that isnt halted by an ex or knives and nothing COUNTS until she even knows about knives IMO and you end with essentially what COULD be a good relationship by the end if they just touched on it. But they don't so i want a game. Sorry for the essay
I never watched the movie or read the comic and even so this show was amazing, I feel like I didn't know Scott that much like you said, though those last two episodes were helpful in showing more about him, all the source material seems super interesting. Everything has made me want to read the comics and watch the movie!
Who knew that “subverting expectations” could actually be done so well. Having watched the movie, the comic and played the game, the show was just an awesome rollercoaster. There was only 1 thing that I was sad about not seeing and that was still not getting a full adaptation of his high school best friend he never noticed
As someone that, when I watched the series, hadn't read the comic or watched the movie and barely had any context of them thanks to a MAD parody skit, I still really enjoyed it
As someone who was raised on the franchise (I've read the comics so many times my friends probably have a list of no context panels I've sent to them, and I've watched the movie since I was like 7 and knows its soundtrack by heart and geeked the fuck out when the songs "Black Sheep" and "Scott Pilgrim" made cameos,) this is something I absolutely ADORED.
I've been watching your videos for over a year now and watching a Scott Pilgrim related video is amazing!!! Me and 300+ people in the Scott Pilgrim fanbase are currently re-making the movie entirely (With voice acting, music, animation, and more!) This anime is super awesome, I'm so happy it's finally here
My uncle dropped the show and that got me curious... I saw the twist on ep 1 and kept going, it was a nice "what if player 2 happened instead" story. Its nice.
as soon as you said it is fantastic, i stopped the video, turn on the show, watched it, loved it, and now i am back to watch your amazing summary (as always)
The feeling I got when the Evil Ex theme from the video game played when Even Older Scott fought the Exes was unreal. I loved that whole final battle, and wasn't actually expecting to hear any music directly from the game, even though Anamanaguchi did the music for both the game and show.
I never watched the movie nor read the comics, but let me tell you I loved this series! What spoke to me the most was just how they'd subvert your expectations at pretty much every twist and turn. Whenever I found myself getting into the rhythm, they'd throw me yet another curveball. That being said, I definitely want to do my homework and catch up on the universe after enjoying this so much :)
As a big Scott Pilgrim fan, I do think this show is great, but.... the fact that if we do assume that this future Scott went through the same developments as comic Scotts it does feel like a character regression, as the whole point of Nega Scott gets thrown out the window and it feels like character assassination. It probably isn't the same Scott from the comics tho, since Future Ramona mentions that it was their first big break, even though in the comic she left and they did have a break, which caused Scott to confront himself, so idk. Still a fun series.
i dont read the comics but old scott is definitely based on movie scott and not comic scott.. yes they are from the same story but also not really (one is a very condensed version of the other)
As some who had the animation as the first time in this story, not having the context to anything made it all so much funnier, dead people turning into coins, vegan powers, a dude with magic powers just because, Ramona's purse and huge hammer Imma watch the movie now
I definitely preferred the comics, so it left a sour taste considering the marketing around this. But at the same time I love the Scott Pilgrim world and characters so much that I love them doing new stuff with it. While I much prefer Scott as a protagonist, and more importantly I love the slower pacing of the comics where Scott and Ramona slowly came to terms with themselves and started to work towards being better people. This one is amazing in most regards but that just felt lacking here in how quickly they fell in love and changed here that like the movie felt like a more generic heroes journey. I also have to headcannon that future Scott and Ramona are different from the comic versions because I hate the idea of this being how they turned out, especially with the amazing ambiguity of the original. There are a few issues I still have, like the stuff you brought up or nobody caring about Scott dying, but regardless I still really liked this series. I love the focus on the evil exes and how entertaining they are. The humor is great as expected and the movie set stuff was really fun, and fuck the animation and choreogrphy was just phenomenal. Great show overall but it still irks me in a lot of ways.
Yeah it felt a lot more boring and this has been done before many times instead of a coming of age story. The original had a simple premise "beat dudes to get girl" but the complexity came with its characters.
What I'm thinking is that the future Scott's in this series are versions of Scott who never got the development that we saw in the comics. I think the show is amazing in terms of art style and animation, and I like that they did something different. But I think it acts as an interesting companion piece to the original story more than anything, definitely not a true sequel
Only thing that really bugged me too Was that the fact that most of Gideons plans got erased. We dont have his big babe cryoginator and he hasnt even Affected Ramona with the glow beforehand which is weird considering that the show and the comics would split stories after matthews battle. (tho I also like to think that the series is a sequel to the novels)
@@neroatlas9121 not really. So basically, everything prior to the fight with matthew is supposedly the same in both the show and the comics so that implies that Gideon still has his Baby freezer and the glow but for some reason they dont play a role in the anime. Kinda weird. It's essentially the same Gideon as the one in the comics, just that here, scott "doesnt win" against matthew. The glow and such would still exist but idk
@@neroatlas9121 basically there is two alternate Versions of the story. There is the movie and then there is the comics and anime. Basically, old scott is the scott from the comics, the one who fought all the exes etc. Then, we get the anime scott who loses hjs fight against matthew. This implied that the Events of both the show and the comics before the fight against matthew are the same. So either the glow and Gideons frozen girls got retconned, forgotten about or the show and the comics are both also separate stories
All I’ll say is this, I’m glad new people are being introduced to Scott Pilgrim, and for people that love to show I’m happy for them, but there’s that part of me that does feel a bit disappointed about the fact that they weren’t really being honest when they marked it, Personally, I would’ve preferred a faithful adaption of the comic with the exact character development from the show with the characters, plus without the exes dying with also more episodes to to really flush out the characters that kind of got sidelined as well, but again, I can be happy that we got something though.😊😅
I would've loved if Scott didn't die and instead got dragged along with Ramona as she tries to clear things up with her exes(I dont know how they would make that happen but it'd be cool) so Ramona wouldn't be randomly obsessed with the "death" of Scott and Scott and in turn Knives, Kim, and Envy could all get character development arcs along the side! It would take much longer but I think it'd be worth it
Matthew Patel is honestly one of my favorite characters because he’s kinda supposed to be the tutorial boss of the story but he ends up defeating Gideon and taking his empire despite being the lowest ranking ex
@@nicholasaugello2534 perhaps but I like to imagine that the only reason he lost to scott was because he underestimated him and didn’t have the chance to get serious
Honestly the only thing that bugged me is that I kept asking "where's Nega Scott?" "Nega Scott is behind this right?" "Ok, Old Nega Scott" "This is really old Nega Scott, right?" "Nega Scott is gonna show up right? He hardly did anything in the movie" ..."was the bad guy Nega Scott corrupted?" "where's Nega Scott??" Then the show ended. :/
The show may be cool and all, but still, it would have been nice to finally have the comic adaptation everyone wanted from years and years. And yes, "the original comic is still there", like Bryan said, but there's nothing wrong in wanting a decently faithful adaptation of something in another medium. Even with the necessary liberties for it to properly translate from a narrative mean to another. Unfortunately, with this show existing and O'Malley's "I don't want to do the same story a third time" mindset, at this point it's unlikely to have the proper adaptation of the comic in animated form. At least in the near future.
At very least he doesn't go for bs Kirkman excuse of almost doing faithful adaptation and then adding bs which comic mocked and which makes most of story beats way worse than they were initially. I really hate Invincible show. At very least Scott show has the humour and charm with good visuals. Watch Pantheon, folk, it's deserves more love.
scott pilgrim had been on my to watch list for years now and i never actually watched a trailer or saw anything from it (besides that one "he just left" scene from the movie) and the anime was the first "taste" i got of the show. i was very confused as to why they would randomly start fighting and the fact that they were able to change scenes. i skipped some of the first few episodes (not entirely, just some scenes) but at the end, i fell in love and watched it all over again! very, very good story. my favorite thing from the show was knives and kim's duet because of just how much i fell in love with the song. this show is the reason that i'm itching to play drums again. haven't played them in years.
Once you get past the shock that it isn't actually an adaptation, the story makes more sense. It's like playing a visual novel that locks the true ending behind new game plus.
This is what I want from an ADAPTATION taking some source material and do something(not all) different and give you a new perspective about that original work, now.. I just need to read the comic!
Whatever is my favorite episode tbh united states of whatever is amazing Also love how Lucas lee and Todd both jab each other especially since Chris Evans became a big actor after this movie was kinda cheeky and funny
Never read the comics. Thought the movie was eh. Loved this series. I genuinely had so much fun with this show. I actually teared up during Roxy’s reconciliation. I think it was the music they used for the flashback and apology. So simple but it hit me in my feels. Also Mae Whitman can do no wrong, she is an icon and a Queen and gives a stellar performance. Speaking of. When that extra went “icon. Queen. Mommy” to Envy I almost choked on nothing. If I’d been drinking I would have done a spit take. Took me by surprise and I laughed so hard.
I went into the anime blind with cautious optimism and was absolutely blown away. So happy with the new plot. The pacing was excellent, sound and design was fantastic, I would be hard pressed to find any major criticisms. It was a series no one was asking for, but I am so glad someone got high and said "what if Scott Pilgrim, but anime?"
I watched it thinking it was going to be an animated version of the comics done by the actors of the movie. I grew up with the movie I never read the comics So I was looking forward to seeing what the movie had cut out but this was an absolute shock and it was indeed incredible!!!! I loved it so much of it was well done they clearly had fun with it and there was love for it. I am looking forward to reading the comics to learn even more and have a much more appreciation for this series when I re-watch it in the proper context
I think this is like a sequel to the comics, Scott and Ramona got together and married, they “divorced” which led to old Scott changing the timeline by kidnapping his younger self causing this to happen
As someone coming in fully blind, I absolutely loved the series! I loved the exes! The twins were the only ones I didn’t care for but I really enjoyed all of this!
just another fact that made me appreciate the show even more, bryan lee o'malley divorced his wife (the real life inspiration for ramona) in 2014 so do with that what you will
I actually really liked the Todd stuff, since Todd starts acting very different in response to what happens. Even apologizing to Envy. Other versions of him apologizing for falling for Wallace? Nope never would happen. I don’t think he’s a jerk anymore, he’s just not bright. My fav bit is that he’s training probably to prove himself to Wallace and regain his powers as well in the end, with Roxie training him.
I do understand why some fans could felt cheated, since a lot of them were looking forward to an animated version of the original story and the marketing really made it look like that’s what it would be, but I really enjoyed what they did with this series, and the people who aren’t watching it because of the twist are missing out
I just love the twins. They're just like "Yeah our Robot said we're bro's in the future, later bro" and they're all friends now.
"and they're all friends now" is a good summary of the story-telling depth of this anime. it's nonexistent
@@floricel_112 Haha, actually, the comic says that Roxie got there because she's an artist and happened to have an exposition at a local art gallery in Toronto
They all had something going on there, except Mathew
Wait. So, scott beats them, they turn into money and they respawn....so why didn't Scott respawn when they thought he "died"

one detail i absolutely adored was the hair dying scenes at the start of most episodes. it really does a good job of signifying that, yes, this is ramona's story, and while in the other adaptations her hair would just inexplicably change color and you just have to deal with it, here we're taken through EVERY color change, step by step, as we're following ramona this time.
**SPOILER AHEAD**
And some hair colors even made sense with the storyline. E.g. the ones after Scott's "death" had a darker color. After she discovers that he is, in fact, alive, the colors start to get brighter, as if she had reborn inside. Brilliant.
I think it can also be seen as the reversal of Ramona's baggage, as with every breakup she changed her hair style and colour.
Just a complement: in the last scene we see Ramona dyeing her hair "white", the brightest color of all and, for the first time in the series, we see her actually happy (thus, bright), and right after she leaves with her new friends and boyfriend, Scott. Basically, she feels happy for the first time after he left. Isn't it a brilliancy or not?

another trojan horse show using the brand name to then not be the brand
never about what u can stand, you can stand a lot, its about a standard you should have
its another waste of a opportunity to make the actual remake it should of been, its a skip
Yea that’s the funny part, Lisa was just… not in Season 1. I can understand why but still.
I really hope they do not do a season to this story and world is perfect the way it is.
I do hope they make a new story in a different universe.

One thing I really missed from the other iterations of Scott Pilgrim is Wallace's best friendship with Scott, Wallace being somewhat distant from Scott made me a bit sad
Ur right 😊
Yeah, he's one of his best friend but even if the comics he was never a good friend.
(Such as Scott being Wallace's sugar baby, or the scene where they almost implied that Older Scott and Older Wallace were married before faking it out with a "his husband works at Nintendo" joke.)
Scott/Wallace ship tease has always been a running subtextual joke in the series, but it's also just straight up implied that Wallace has a crush on Scott.
Super well said (I especially enjoyed reading that last paragraph)!

This, definitely my take as well
Considering the original was based on a lot of events in the authors life, including meeting his eventual wife, I think the Netflix series was inspired by the fact he has since divorced his wife in 2014, and his reflection on everyone over the years.
I’m kinda disappointed that its not a full on adaptation of the comic, but other than that its hella great.
this show was written by the original creator, so even though it's not adapting the original story, it's story is still inline with his vision
The comic makes everything so much more believable and impactful.
so they made a show called scott pilgrim but killed him off? lmao pass.
I'm really the only one who doesnt like how they handle wallace and Scott's friendship
@@daymm8330 No, I know what you mean.
@@RailwayScholar my bro wallace said Scott's funeral was an excuse for him to wear black, like??? Wallace would NEVER 😭
I had seen the movie, and my uncle owns all the books and loved the film, so this isn’t quite what we were expecting, so later we dubbed it “Ramona Flowers Takes Over”
That should’ve been one of the titles for the episode 😂
@@Pwilliams4000 ikr it’s so obvious but they never took it
Given how the Book, and Film have slightly different endings messages.
What were the messages?

@@BlaxkSun Yes 😂
Even though I have some problems with Scott portale l in this show. I did prefer this over just a adaptation of the comic
Not an anime
@@lukescrew1981Technically it is. It was animated in japan.
Except that Scott is the comic book Scott who already had grown up and had his happy ending with Ramona. Way to go ruining the original story.
@@chiaapetYeah, the anime basically flipped the comic off and i seriously dislike that.
But I just want to watch all the cool moments fully animated. Is that so wrong?
@@floricel_112 Apparently so. Fans of the original story can just fuck off, I guess.
@@floricel_112 not really, i wish at times that too, but this series gives us something new and a new side to the story while the comics are the comics, they are still kept intact
And here si one thing, the fact that every iteration of Scott Pilgrim being different, gives place to a different type of discourse, like, go to discussions of some series like say, Naruto, One Piece or others like certain Marvel comics, and you will see a constant discourse of "comic/manga did x or y better, anime was better, etc" but in itself, most of the times its just the same story, dont get me wrong though, i love regular adaptations, but when you get something that treats with respect the source and makes its own take giving it more depth overrall, im all down for it, big example being the first Castlevania series with its 4 seasons, it gave a new take on the story and took the viewers and source with care to show something more formative, same with SPTO, it takes the cast we know, and give it a spin while still revolving around Scott, its fun, is good and i loved it for that
The original story (which is better) exists but isn't animated.
All I wanted was the best comic I've ever read to be properly animated and voice acted. Instead I got a fever dream time heist that I will never ever accept as canon.
@@RailwayScholarcope
Speaking as someone who’s only ever watched this show and nothing else Scott Pilgrim related:
I would’ve liked to see more of Scott and some more proper development for him, it kinda feels like nothing really changes for him.
I think Gideon is actually a good character isolated in this show not knowing the context of exactly what a dick he was. Same with all the evil exes.
Ramona is wifey. That is all.
I personally think if a 2nd season comes around we can see him grow get jobs etc out of his phase.
@@skyhunter2816 I get that, and I figured that might be the case, I just spoke as a person who’s only seen this show.
This is the first time I have done so, I actually stopped watching to go binge the whole show and am soooo glad I did.
Me too :D
That is literally what I did I was going to spoil myself but then he sounded so serious so I was like nah I'm going to watch it first took me three days to do too, worth it.
It's been three days, I read all the comics, watched the movie, binged the series, and I'm so ready for this review. I hope he mentions that Kim Pines deserves more, because she totally does
matpat's sans is ness "play the game first" was the main push to get me the finally play undertale
They did us dirty< awesome animation, sound effects, and fight scenes for a story we didn't ask for :(

I'm so happy they took such a different approach to telling this amazing story. If they decide to make a season two, it would be so fuckin hype
The entire funeral scene I was hoping that the coins were in the casket and got my wish granted and it was hilarious 😂
As someone who dislikes reading, dislikes liveaction and while not disliking, generally don't play games as much, it kinda sucks for me, lol
Wanted the story to be told in Animation too
The marketing didn't say it, but the title literally says that Scott takes off! Such a clever choice.
You call is clever, I call it purposeful misleading. If people knew Scott wasn't the MC they'd be pissed. They purposefully marketed it as an adaptation of the comics. It was not.
@@jase276I expected something with similar story-telling depth and emotional complexity as the comic. My bad.
@@jase276 the crew said in interviews that it was different from the comics. None of the marketing really suggested otherwise. And again, another big hint was the title, as it isn’t the title of any of the graphic novel volumes, unlike the last adaptation.

So as a person that is just jumping into the Scott universe I FUCKING LOVE ALL OF THIS!!!!
I binged this all night the day it came out, and I loved every damn second of it. This was such a mind-blowing surprise!
I hope they focus on Scott more next season.
I love how the ex's became either friends with scott or just chill with scott (because ramona) by the end
I think we can all agree that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off can truly be the end of the franchise. So much love was put into it, and realistically, its Bryan O'Malley's love letter to the franchise that addresses the biggest complaint that most fans had. Like you said, that Ramona gets no development
This show was genuinely amazing. It was a pleasant af subversion of tropes and I was absolutely here for it!
Incredible show loved all of it the hope is that season 2 focuses more on Scott’s past and really allows us to focus on characters like Kim, envy and Knives more
I usually don’t listen to spoiler warnings and just watch the video, but I am so so glad I did this time it was such a good series!!!
I adored every second of it! God it was so much fun.
This is good ✨
I mean, it's not exactly false advertising. Scott Pilgrm certainly takes off.
I never watched the movie or read the comic and even so this show was amazing, I feel like I didn't know Scott that much like you said, though those last two episodes were helpful in showing more about him, all the source material seems super interesting. Everything has made me want to read the comics and watch the movie!
“Everyone needs closure; That’s why they call it closure.”

Me and 300+ people in the Scott Pilgrim fanbase are currently re-making the movie entirely (With voice acting, music, animation, and more!)
This anime is super awesome, I'm so happy it's finally here
My uncle dropped the show and that got me curious... I saw the twist on ep 1 and kept going, it was a nice "what if player 2 happened instead" story.
Its nice.
Player two, new game+ , Ramona dlc. Either works, really
as soon as you said it is fantastic, i stopped the video, turn on the show, watched it, loved it, and now i am back to watch your amazing summary (as always)
The feeling I got when the Evil Ex theme from the video game played when Even Older Scott fought the Exes was unreal. I loved that whole final battle, and wasn't actually expecting to hear any music directly from the game, even though Anamanaguchi did the music for both the game and show.
Yeah this! I was soooo stoked to hear the game's music at the end!
It's like an amalgam of Movie Scott and Comic Scott. Which given how there's changes before the disapperance, makes sense its another continuity.
i dont read the comics but old scott is definitely based on movie scott and not comic scott.. yes they are from the same story but also not really (one is a very condensed version of the other)
As some who had the animation as the first time in this story, not having the context to anything made it all so much funnier, dead people turning into coins, vegan powers, a dude with magic powers just because, Ramona's purse and huge hammer
Imma watch the movie now
I definitely preferred the comics, so it left a sour taste considering the marketing around this.
Yeah, maybe this gideon cares even less than movie gideon as he's even lazier.
@@neroatlas9121 not really. So basically, everything prior to the fight with matthew is supposedly the same in both the show and the comics so that implies that Gideon still has his Baby freezer and the glow but for some reason they dont play a role in the anime. @@godomoths242 so... wtf is THIS gideon. Will we get SOME explination?
@@neroatlas9121 basically there is two alternate Versions of the story. There is the movie and then there is the comics and anime. Basically, old scott is the scott from the comics, the one who fought all the exes etc. Then, we get the anime scott who loses hjs fight against matthew. This implied that the Events of both the show and the comics before the fight against matthew are the same. So either the glow and Gideons frozen girls got retconned, forgotten about or the show and the comics are both also separate stories
@@godomoths242 I GOT A THEORY. THIS IS BASED OFF THE VIDEOGAME.
I mean think about it, most exes have their videogame appearances.
It would take much longer but I think it'd be worth it
I'm sad that no one said "He punched the highlights out of her hair!"
Matthew Patel is honestly one of my favorite characters because he’s kinda supposed to be the tutorial boss of the story but he ends up defeating Gideon and taking his empire despite being the lowest ranking ex
I honestly felt like Gideon got nerfed in this series atleast compared to the Video game version of him
@@nicholasaugello2534 perhaps but I like to imagine that the only reason he lost to scott was because he underestimated him and didn’t have the chance to get serious
Honestly the only thing that bugged me is that I kept asking "where's Nega Scott?" "Nega Scott is behind this right?" "Ok, Old Nega Scott" "This is really old Nega Scott, right?" "Nega Scott is gonna show up right? He hardly did anything in the movie" ..."was the bad guy Nega Scott corrupted?" "where's Nega Scott??"
Then the show ended.
The comic: somewhat bad/good ending?
The movie: Chaotic-neutral ending?
The anime:Yea, this is what acutally probably went down.
scott pilgrim had been on my to watch list for years now and i never actually watched a trailer or saw anything from it (besides that one "he just left" scene from the movie) and the anime was the first "taste" i got of the show. i was very confused as to why they would randomly start fighting and the fact that they were able to change scenes. i skipped some of the first few episodes (not entirely, just some scenes) but at the end, i fell in love and watched it all over again! very, very good story.
my favorite thing from the show was knives and kim's duet because of just how much i fell in love with the song. this show is the reason that i'm itching to play drums again. haven't played them in years.

A glowing endorsement, I shall watch it immediately
Never read the comics.
Thought the movie was eh.
Loved this series.
I genuinely had so much fun with this show. I actually teared up during Roxy’s reconciliation. I think it was the music they used for the flashback and apology. So simple but it hit me in my feels. Also Mae Whitman can do no wrong, she is an icon and a Queen and gives a stellar performance.
Speaking of. When that extra went “icon. Queen. Mommy” to Envy I almost choked on nothing. If I’d been drinking I would have done a spit take. Took me by surprise and I laughed so hard.
I love that you included the American gods clip, it helped illustrate your point well. Also, great analysis!
Everybody complaining that Scott didn't get enough backstory, just read the comics or watch the movie. It's all there.
The twins were the only ones I didn’t care for but I really enjoyed all of this!
just another fact that made me appreciate the show even more, bryan lee o'malley divorced his wife (the real life inspiration for ramona) in 2014 so do with that what you will
"If you haven't seen the show yet... You can leave."
Well... that's all I needed to hear. See ya, I'll be back after I watch the show.
I just wish they had found a way to fit in the "You named the cat Gideon?" joke inside the show. That would have made it 100% perfect ^^
Does 2 will be soul bro
my sister described it as netflix funded fan fiction and i think that describes it VERY well and i loved it
I was waiting for your review!!!! I binged it all the night it dropped
I do understand why some fans could felt cheated, since a lot of them were looking forward to an animated version of the original story and the marketing really made it look like that’s what it would be, but I really enjoyed what they did with this series, and the people who aren’t watching it because of the twist are missing out
