The horns actually help goats regulate their body temperatures for those who dont know! My pygmy billy Beau 8-9 months old is very close to this level of respect and mannerism, which lets me know im doing things right with him❤so thank you for sharing this!❤❤️

I have never seen this so perfectly articulated. Whenever people find out I have packgoats, they immediately have a story of a goat that butts people or climbs on cars or something. I tell them mine are trained not to, and when they ask how...."I don't know, I just do". Your explanation is perfect.

Thank you for this video, we recently rescued a billy goat who had been tied up all day alone and crying. He's only been with us for a few days but already he's enjoying a cuddle/scratch. However he charges at us occasionally. He has huge horns and is very powerful. I don't think I'll be able to flip him but I'll try the water bottle.

Nice work. I told my wife one day I'd like to have a milk goat. For my birthday she surprised me with a billy goat. Lol.
His teenage "years" I trained him this way and it helped and he also reared up and wouldn't butt me. When he grew up and became a 250lb+ monster, it was a different ordeal. He would mostly rear up and stop his head right at my knee but then..he'd start pushing softly and then harder against my knee and then the fight or flight would have to happen. Protect your crotch at all cost from the horns. Lol. Wild part is he learned I would grab his legs to flip him over and he would pick his legs up quickly and then stick you with the horns or put you in the dirt. His cardio was better than mine and due to worrying the kids would get hurt I had to sell him to a better equipped home.

Stacy, this was great!!!! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your experiences. This also shows that you can keep both kinds of goats together ( horned and un-horned, which many breeders I've talked to told me was impossible!!!) I've been trying to learn as much as possible about goats, and there is so much conflicting information. I got my first two in March, and want to have a good bond with them, like you have with your goats. I am teaching them their names, using treats, which works great except for the fact that they very smart and only seem to know their names when treats are involved. I spend lots of time with them and try to give them lots of love. It would be nice if they'd come to me just for a scratch. Is there a way to transition? I'm sure it all takes time and patience and they are still less than four months old. They are amazing and I want to do right by them. Anyway, THANK YOU for letting us see what is possible and how to have happy goats!!!!!!

Thank you so much for watching. Congratulations on getting your goats!! that's so exciting. I have quite a few videos that may be helpful for you, especially the training video. Yes, it does take time and patience to get a goat to warm up. They all have different personalities and some like to be approached more than the others, but treats definitely help. At 4 months old, it should be pretty easy to teach them.

Thank you! My goats all have their horns. It is part of their physiology. If someone is going to get goats, they really need to study the animal. We showed goats at the fair, but I believe in raising my animals naturally. So, when we would show, we showed open class. Horns and all. People were surprised that the females had beards. We did not shave them to show. Just a good bath.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience/expertise. I wanted to ask if your males were fixed or not. I just bought a goat and a billy goat. He seams pretty young. I am in Mexico and he spent his life tied until now. In 2 days he already took very bad habits. Butting of course…and I let him free in my 5 acres as it’s all fenced. I am used to animals as I bread horses and had stallions. I am used to the feet and the kickings, not as much to the horns and butting. And around me everyone is telling me to fix him and to cut his horns. I read that it’s a way for them to refresh (kind of a ventilator around the surface of the horns). So I was wondering if it makes sense for me to try this method as a male or if I will loose as he is not fixed. So for sure, horns, nope, but fixing, if you say it’s possible, I will try as is.

    • @StacyAlan77
      @StacyAlan77  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Congratulations on getting a goat!! My males are all fixed now, some of them I banded at 12-16 weeks old and the others I had taken to a vet to castrate because they were 2 years old. Either way, they are still easy to train and work with.
For your goat, I'd recommend getting him some friends. Goats need to be around other goats. It's possible he just wants to play with you and that may just need other goat friends. I definitely do not recommend cutting horns off, but you may want to have him fixed.

@@StacyAlan77 thank youuuu so much for your answer. Actually I also have a goat female(she was bred 2 months ago) so he is not alone. Though I am wondering if he is not feeling stronger and protective *thanks/because* of the female. As I am off the grid in Mexico, vets are not around the corner and they don’t come very easily. I will try my best to follow your guidelines, and if he turns too strong and testing me too much, I will bring him to a vet (they will laugh so badly, but I don’t care 😉. Today I already had him twice on his back. I also have to keep my dogs out of the picture as they want to protect me. I find it easier with horses. But I will learn and find a good solution for him. Thanksssssss again

thank you so much, yes Rusty was castrated at about 3 years old, but he has always had the same temperament since a baby. Each goat is different and has their own quirks, but I'd imagine if you train them not to butt you, it would also go for any human.

Hi Stacy, I have an issue where my goat doesn't headbutt me but will headbutt people who come over to the house. Having company is quite hard these days. One thing you need to know is that my goat is a house goat. He is potty trained and comes in the house to nap and sleep. He was an abandoned feral goat who was blind and his options were few. I live in a beach house in Hawaii so there is no space for a farm. However, he is quite happy with his current living situation. I just need to train him not to harass my guests. Any advice?

    • @StacyAlan77

that is a good question. Though Rusty won't butt me, he will try to butt the goats at feeding time and sometimes for no reason at all. He is definitely the herd boss and I wish I knew a way to stop him from messing with the others. The others have just learned to give Rusty his space.

Here for advice. We live in an area in Hawaii very RURAL and goats roam freely. An orphan goat adopted my curmudgeon, elderly neighbor. He’s a little too senile to do anything. Mainly he just feeds it so the goat doesn’t belong to anyone. The goat tries to head butt (mainly posturing) my 11year old daughter every morning when she’s at the bus stop. (If my dog doesn’t accompany her up the hill).
How would you suggest she “train this goat?” we have “goat sticks” at the top of the driveway so she can put it in front of herself when he rears up (not to hit but to block). He’s never hurt her or even made contact it’s more annoying than anything.
Two more pieces of information we don’t really have animal control where I live, also I would hate to call . And I leave for work so I can’t wait with her which would clearly be the easiest solution.

    • @StacyAlan77

As a 4-H leader I do want to add a bit of information from the “other side” for education. Especially as this video is a bit biased and based on bad experiences that should never have happened.
If you want to show in Dairy Goats the goat must be hornless. Either polled or disbudded. There is no getting around this rule. Horns are an automatic disqualification.
Many 4-H clubs require all goats used by children to be hornless. This is for safety and insurance reasons. Even the sweetest goat in the world can move it’s head the wrong way and injure their handlers or herd mates.
It’s important to understand that there are many different opinions on this issue. It’s a very highly debated subject. Where people have a lot of intense emotions on either side of the debate.
At the end of the day it’s personal preference unless you show or do 4-H.
Lastly.. The best way to train your goats not to head butt you... Don’t play head butt games EVER!! I tell my 4-H families all the time not to play that way with their babies. Yes it’s “cute” when they are little, but not so much as an adult. It can be dangerous.
I have been show breeding for 13 years. None of my goats ever try this because I have never allowed anyone to play those games with them. I didn’t have to “train” them not to do it. Just never ever played with them like that.

    • @hf5749
      @hf5749 ปีที่แล้ว

We never played with our buckling like he is doing here and he started head butting us on his own. He was a bottle baby and always kind of pushy and jealous. It took a lot of work with the squirt gun and putting him on the ground to get him to stop. He will still press his horns against my leg occasionally if im petting another goat or late with breakfast. His disbudding failed and he has horns not scurs. We have a disbudded doeling and 2 grown does that have never tried to ram us even though they do rough play or try to establish dominance with each other. I'm new to goats but I'm sure there must be other goats who naturally tried to push around their people without playing games with them. He hasn't hurt them or us with his horns but was very annoying until we learned about how to train him.

Polled goats seem to do just as fine as horned ones. But I've seen horned goats get stuck in all sorts of ways and injure other animals. It's the process of disbudding that I don't like, even if it's only for a moment. It seriously looks like torture, jeez. 4-H leader. They actually don’t make much of a difference. Horned goats are not colder in winter than polled (naturally hornless) nor disbudded. Same in summer the horned goats will have no temperature variation from polled or disbudded either.
My 4-H kids did a project on this year’s ago. All goats registered the same internal and external temps. It was quite interesting project. 😊

My male goat plays with me the same way. We got him as a baby and were told he was a pygmy. He definitely is not, he's huge now, his head comes almost to my chest. He's never tried to headbutt me but he constantly tries to hook my leg when I'm playing with him. I can't seem to get him to stop this behavior and it REALLY hurts when he sneaks behind me and does it and I'm worried he'll hurt me badly one day without meaning to. I've tried pinching his ear and flicking his nose when he does it, but he still seems to think it's hilarious. Any other ideas? (He's been castrated btw)

I also refuse to disbud my goats. I have bought some which were disbudded, but their kids will all have their horns intact.

Get a hotshot. Instant results. Because anyone with the hotshot in their hands will be avoided. Where as everyone would have to go through this training with the goat. Who has time for that. "no" the hotshot does not harm them, and they will still come to you when you want them to. Don't hate it till you try it. You will see.

I have a yearling I just weathered. He had some health complications and so we had to put off banding a little longer than I wanted, and he is such a little turd now. He’s gonna get turtled..

True, but I'm sure there are other techniques to use for larger goats.

Well....there is this way of interacting with them. And "wow it works, it's magic"... people are just stupid and uninformed, sadly for the benefit of their own interests, disregarding what's good for the animals. They use band-aid methods to solve agression issues in animals, and those dont even solve the agression issue...just make it sure the animal can't hurt it's precious "owner".
And it's all a-okey, in our "CULTURE"... I live in Hungary, and here aswell, if you show this video to any person, 99 out of 100 will just look at you sir like you are a crazy person for "fussing and overthinking things". Cause they see animals as lesser beings not worth the attention.
Ofcourse, they make their own lives miserable aswell :) And in the process, make more work for themselves and less money - ah that sweet money they crave so much :DDDDD
So all in all, great video, but I guess most of white-culture-civil-humans are just not built and raised to understand this. How you have to spend time with other beings to actually understand them. :D
Well done and showcased here. You Sir deserve everything good, and you probably get it aswell - for you have wonderful company and time well spent with these animals. :)
