Finkelstein is a man who could've gotten with the program and lived a life of unwarranted prestige and unlimited financial comfort, like much of his ivy league contemporaries. Instead, he unwaveringly said the truth, he was fair and principled, and never relented even in the face of great personal and professional harm. I’ve been listening to Norman Finkelstein for a long time. I remember when I saw his debate with Alan Dershowitz on “Democracy Now” and was impressed by his courage and passion. He made a fool out of Dershowitz and proved to the whole world that zionists lie about everything and they unfortunately have a massive support from both the media and the politicians which means that their talking points are being presented as truth. Norman has really sacrificed a lot for the Palestinian cause and he deserves the utmost respect. Greetings from Sweden.
It's so disheartening that the oppressors have so much support, even though many of them will openly claim support for other humanitarian and socially progressive causes.
Agreed though I'm sure he would say his sacrifices pale next to those who have died for Palestinian freedom, even as he devoted 40 years to researching and publishing the truth
Massive support from media are you serious? Mainstream media parrot everything Hamas says and cry about every "poor civilian" that gets blown up because Hamas decided to dig tunnels under their house.
This has got to be, by far, the most intelligent discussion on the topic of Palestine and Israel that I have ever heard in my life. I'm very grateful to have been privileged to listen to it.
Incredible. It's been a privilege to listen to these 53 minutes of Norman's amazing analysis, the history of struggle, and why, wherever there's injustice, there's always resistance, which must be understood, not condemned.
I am sure you are referring to the pain of the 224 hostages kidnapped from their homes and families. Or perhaps the suffering of the woman who were raped. Or maybe, just maybe, the suffering of the babies who were beheaded. Because after all, as you said, you just have to be human to feel the suffering of other people.
@@jaykay7180 there is no evidence of women being raped that day, none. It is an IDF claim, but lacks evidence. There were no 40 babies beheaded, that was disproved many days ago. You forget to mention the palestini women in israeli jails that are held without charge, and are being raped and tortured as a matter of fact. You demand compassien for non existing beheaded babies, yet do not mention the schildren that DID die during that incident.,, and you completely ignore the far over 2000 dead children in Gaza.. Do you think bomb shrapnel and falling buildings do not cause suffering? You never mention what Israeli children learn in school.. To hate arabs and pity secular jews. To kill arabs, and take them as slaves. Do you really mean that living a free life in a lovely city, and being born to live inside a prison makes people equal? And.. you do not mention that there was little to no firing of weapons oct 7th until IDF showed up and killed israeli and Hamas without a care of their own people. And still.. yes we do feel for those israeli who died and suffered that day.. but not more, or before those palestinians who had much worse done to them.
Chris Hedges is where I go to seek clarity, it's been this way since Occupy Wall Street. His books have single handedly changed my mind to be critical of all aspects of our culture and the rhetoric used by politicians and mainstream media. He has affirmed the moral direction of my heart and set the intellectual stage of my life. I am SO grateful Hedges interviewed Finklestein. This is extremely valuable content. Thank you, and please, Chris, if you see this... know that you've shaped lives in such a positive way and we NEED you more than ever to continue these interviews and to continue digging for the truth. Thank you. ❤️❤️
Rosa Parks once said: "There is only so much hurt, disappointment, and oppression one can take... The line between reason and madness grows thinner." I shared this quote today on another channel, and it's come back to haunt me. I'm trying to write about the horrific events of October 7th. Now I realize the two roads in front of me and which one to take to successfully write and get my piece published. The only road leads to a deep philosophical look at condemnation and why we must shut out the noise, condemnation and censorship, (some of my posts have suffered, for the first time ever), of when condemnation is and isn't appropriate. Thank you, Chris for your endless illumination and a special blessed gratitude to Mr. Finkelstein for lighting the tunnel I was in. I can see clearly now.
Unfortunately for the good people of Israel, it has been Netanyahu's Modus Operandi to hold on to power by tactically Gaslighting the good people of Israel and inciting the enmity towards Israel and the fear of good people throughout the world.
I’ve heard Norman Finkelstein many times but this discussion with Chris Hedges reveals him at his most measured, thoughtful, humble and inspiring. Thank you Chris.

Don't forget the on denominator to all this: US empire US = empire by denial/deception - Immerwahr ...using proxies (Israel,Apatheid South Africa,Germany,Japan,Saudi, France,Ukraine, etc), pawns & patsies

Thank you Chris Hedges for giving Norman Finkelstein the space and time to make his carefully constructed argument on behalf of Palestinian rights. Norman Finkelstein is the best and most compelling voice on this subject. Many thanks to you both.
I totally agree with your observation. Chris, who is also brilliant, subordinated his own ego to allow his guest the scope to deliver his cogent observations.
This is one of the best interviews on Palestine I have heard. He explains my feelings perfectly; better than I could explain/understand. I can't express how grateful I am.
Bravo, Chris. I think this was the most moving conversation about what is happening in Palestine right now that I've ever witnessed. Nuance and moral clarity in the news media is in less than short supply. This program is what some of us have been aching for. We have needed just one person, from somewhere, to describe what Palestinian reality is and the why's of their actions. Norman Finkelstein is the clarifying voice. He's done all the research and has engaged in deep thought about the issues, as well as made profound sacrifices for his truth. Thank you both from a grateful North American.
The comparison to the slave uprisings in the US has a lot of merit. Unfortunately most people in the US have no idea how terribly Israel has treated the Palestinians since their country started. They ask "What do the Palestinians want?" Because they have been brainwashed into believing through mass media and their own churches and even high schools that Israel can never be wrong. Period. Thanks as always Chris.
Respectfully, I must ask, have you had your head under a rock. Israel is under constant scrutiny in the U.S. for decades. If Israel sneezes the wrong way, the media is on it. As for schools, they are infected with a one-sided agenda. I grant you, this was not the case decades ago, but today you are absolutely wrong. Most churches have gone woke. The fundamentalists are pro-Israel but other than that, Christians are quite willing to criticize Israel...and as for the secular Jews which are in effect the majority of Jews in America, they examine the Palestinian issue in a way that no other group imo would. It's rare when a group is at war, under attack, and/or has land disputes with others, that they even reflect on what might be the underlying issues. The war in Ukraine could have been prevented and resulted from years of terrible U.S. leadership. Notice how in the first months of the war, almost no one dissented or took the time to look at both sides. This is typical. Secular Jews constantly examine their issues--you are in error about this. It's not a matter that Israel can never be wrong. As is the case with all democracies that have a myriad of issues, people tend to look at the big picture at the expense of nuance. Far more nuance when it comes to Israel and what you say, the opposite is true. Israel is the only western power that gets constant examination. My problem with this is that other countries should be examined with the same frequency.

So glad to see this. Like Norman I'm a student of abolitionist and other radical liberation movements in US history. Since the "40 babies" claim started I have talked about Nat Turner's rebellion and how they even killed children. And I've told people this was a tragedy that was the fault of the slave owning class. No one can imprison, starve, torture people and then critique their most extreme resistance out of context. I'm sad to say many "both sides are equally bad" people have told me no Nat Turner and Hamas must be condemned. They just won't see that puts them on the slaveholders side. It's so sad to see these monstrous stories of deluded supporters of injustice in the name of moderation. It's so heartening to see Norman saying something like what I've been saying. A minor note: The men John Brown beheaded were part of violent pro slave brigades so only "civilians" in a technical sense. It's worth thinking about that in other contexts too. Israel has a policy of moving the most militant zealous settlers near Gaza so while it's certain many innocent did die it's worth considering that just not being in the army doesn't always mean people don't take part in a war of oppressor and oppressed. It's often more complicated.
The Jews have certainly come full circle. Holocaust 1.0 was inflicted by others on the Jews. Holocaust 2.0 is now being inflicted by Jews on the 'others'. This will definitely not end well for Israeli people if they continue to ethnically cleanse another group of people. Who will be next after the Palestinians???
I came here to say the very same thing about John Brown. He did not execute the women or the children. He executed men who were friends and employees of Dutch Henry, a pro slavery zealot who gave meals, lodging and funds to Border Ruffians and other pro slavery militias who had spent the previous years brutalizing and killing abolitionists. The "massacre" was in reaction to the sacking of Lawrence KS, the provisional abolitionist capital of KS, not recognized by DC (the pro slavery capital was however.....interesting) and the near fatal beating of abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner, by southern pro slavery dandy/tough guy, Preston Brooks, cuz his feelings were hurt. It can be argued that Potawatamie was a legitimate military action. One must consider the source when we believe that John Brown killed innocents. I do not believe that he did.
Wow this was the best talk I’ve heard on this whole situation Norman said in defense of Hamas: “I find it very hard to condemn people who are born into a concentration camp, whatever they do, I can understand whatever they do, I can understand being driven mad.” I have chills

RIGHT!?! I get bored if a TikTok is longer than 2-3 minutes! This video was just under an hour (which it totally didn't feel like) and I didn't want it to end. I just discovered Mr.Finkelstein tonight, the first thing I saw was a clip of him pretty much telling a college student to quit the blubbering. 🤣 That clip was only 3 minutes and made me want to find out more about him, so this is the second video I've watched. Off to go find some more!
You'll enjoy his interview with Katie Halper then; it's over two hours long. He gives the actual words that Garrison wrote about the Nat Turner slave rebellion; incredibly powerful! Edit: She has several videos with him, but the other ones I looked at are excerpts from the long one.
At the GOP debate they approach this issue from trying to say anything the fastest and get a pat on the head, then not know who is getting criticized because they all said the same thing but painstakingly try to make them distinct, vs someone who is pre-emptively smeared because what he says is too distinct.

Much respect for you Chris Hedges for allowing Norman Finkelstein the opportunity to present his knowledge and understanding of the Israeli Palestine issue without interruption. That’s a rare trait amongst most interviewers who seem intent to merely push their own narrative.
I've only just learned about Norman Finkelstein and Chris Hedges today, and I'm grateful for it. To hear everything discussed in such a clear, intelligent manner truly helped me understand better the scope of everything. The fact that Norman Finkelstein has put his credibility on the line every time he speaks out, and never backs down from his own morals in spite of it, is truly commendable.
This is first-class journalism and the reason I support this channel. Mr. Hedges, you are just as good interviewing as you are at being interviewed. It takes real courage to tackle a subject like this when everyone is still reacting at an emotional level. And I believe it is really no different when analyzing the Ukraine-Russia situation. We are all tempted to 'take a side' and react without fully understanding the reasons behind why history unfolds the way it does. International relations requires a kind of dispassionate and non-judgmental state of mind but media these days is content to simply shock and numb its audience doing a real disservice to everyone. This interview reveals all of that without even saying it. Congratulations to both of you and I am grateful for this forums' high caliber journalistic standards that actually enriches and helps listeners understand what's happening. Keep up the good work!!
Norman Finkelstein''s moral intelligence and courage is inspirational. He stands as a beacon of light in a world marked by self-interest and cowardice. And ditto for Chris Hedges.

Although I think it is possible to condemn an act and yet understand how it came to be, I'm glad Prof. Finkelstine explained how he could not condemn the terrorists. It's not that he is condoning their acts, but rather that he understands the deep context in which these things tend to happen. But on the back of the worst global misinformation scandal in history (governments/media handling of the pandemic), I know longer trust what I’m being told. When this happened, media and everyone I know, jumped on the same band wagon, I thought now is the time to really look into this matter. Not just the past week or so and not just the past 75 years, but also the past 3000 years!! Suffice to say I’m learning A LOT that I would never find out on MSM. Good interview 👍

The Israelis dropped leaflets saying go south within 24 hours or you'll get bombed. Many did evacuate to the south and still got bombed. What's wrong with this picture?
This was so good. I'm so appreciative of both Finkelstein and Hedges for their moral clarity on this issue. One difference between the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and today is this: the Jewish people living in the ghetto lost, but they are - rightly - hailed as heroes. The Palestinians are in an identical scenario as the Jewish people in Warsaw, and the West, its leaders and its media call them "terrorists" for rising up against their fascist oppressors.
I remember when governments and the media labelled Nelson Mandela and the ANC as terrorists. Pinochet was welcomed on state visits; now it's the Saudis they can't get enough of. Future generations will look back to this time in history in horror.
Actually he made a point of making no moral position but instead used loaded language to describe Israeli actions while romanticising the final goodbye's of the Arab insurgents.
Norman Finkelstein has been abused for decades for his views on the Palestinian/Israel conflict. I know he will be remembered for his contribution on human rights.

You should read one of his books! Illuminating no doubt

Agree wholeheartedly on all points.
There's also an interview of Dan Cohan on The Grayzone. Fantastic. He & Mac Blumenthal spent months in Israel filming a documentary, Killing Gaza.
I'm a simple woman; once I see Prof. Finkelstein's name, I click. Same with Chris Hedges. These two have never disappointed me.

Watch Normans interview with Katie Halper. Lasted almost 3 hours. Wonderful.
Incredible. It's been a privilege to listen to these 53 minutes of Norman's amazing analysis, the history of struggle, and why, wherever there's injustice, there's always resistance, which must be understood, not condemned.
As I say, you don't have to be a Muslim to feel the pain, you just have to be a human
I hate to say it but being human is not enough-apparently. :( :( :(
Sadly, there aren't enough humans willing to speak up against the atrocities committed against the Palestinian people.
What a perspective
" I 31:56 can understand being born into a concentration camp and being driven mad"

Thank you Chris for letting Normon speak uninterrupted.
Love the level of intelligence & humanity of Finkelstein & Hedges. We are fortunate to have their voices.
Perhaps you are unaware that you left out the fact that they are Caucasians and our Torah starts with Genesis ie human origins IE Black people.
All human lives are important, I don't know what your disagreement is based on.
@@benyahudadavidl you're position is unclear to me
Respectfully, I must ask, have you had your head under a rock.
@@benyahudadavidl i am not unaware that the human species originated in Africa. What's the next racist style question? Yes King Solomon was dark but comely. If your a christian... What exactly is YOUR beef.
Norman's integrity fills me with awe.
Exactly, it's indeed what stands out about him. So rare and impressive.

Although I think it is possible to condemn an act and yet understand how it came to be, I'm glad Prof. Finkelstine explained how he could not condemn the terrorists. It's not that he is condoning their acts, but rather that he understands the deep context in which these things tend to happen. This was so good. I'm so appreciative of both Finkelstein and Hedges for their moral clarity on this issue. One difference between the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and today is this: the Jewish people living in the ghetto lost, but they are - rightly - hailed as heroes.
