    I've had great success using a combination of the Philly shell and Dustin Poirier's modified high guard that utilizes elbows to pick off incoming shots. It's a pretty smooth transition even in kickboxing/MMA.

      I love using that too but mostly just the high elbow guard.

      I tend to use porier's high guard in conjunction with a long guard. So like Jon Jones you keep range control using the front leg side kick and your jab, then if they try to overwhelm you, you fall back and contract into the poirier style high guard.

      @@DevilDogMartialArts- yo that's exactly what i do. Being a shorter fighter i love to get inside, so i try to be annoying with the long guard then close the gap when they get impatient.

      I daresay that style looks like it would be useful in a street fight also. Someone hits your elbow with a naked fist it's game over for them.

    Use of elbows from the philly shell too is quite easy to mix in. Pull counters too flow nice. Plus the Poirier style mixed in helps allots

    Bladed stances aren’t just dangerous when low round kicks are involved but also Oblique kicks. Taking oblique kicks when your leg is sideways is a really easy way to have your knee blown out. Like in the Khalil Rountree fight, the reason why the guy’s knee blew out so brutally is bc he took the kick in a bladed stance.

    It really works well for me in mma. I adjusted it a little bit, and it's more like a Dustin Poirier's stance, so I block mostly with my elbows, and so far, it works really well for me. It's my favorite guard, and I feel very safe under it, but ofc I keep in mind that it has some weak sides, like being more open for kicks.

      So why no keep the front leg toe forward and then, then adopt the Philly shell ?

    Answer:
    If you mix it up it does.
    It's a bad idea to do the same thing in MMA.
    The M stands for Mixed.
    Like you said, you have to have vision and great head movement.
    The bread and butter of the P. Shell: you are waiting for your oppenent to do a cross and then you are just out of range and then you hit them with a cross of your own.
    A good way to beat the P. Shell is to never get into a pattern. The Philly Shell is about vision. Blind the Philly Shell by keeping up pressure and being random, and have more stamina. Philly Shell guys love to win fights on points and to wear you down and then attack late in the fight.

    People think that blocking in MMA like you do in boxing or kickboxing doesn't work because they have big gloves. That's just silly, because in both sports you're supposed to block with your arms and elbows, not your hands.
    Pros in boxing and kickboxing also have 8 ounce gloves only (or 10 ounces for some weight classes); you can do something with that but it's still too small to be used reliably.

    • @cadcc
      @cadcc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true bro. You block with gloves in boxing, not with arms or elbows, it can be done, but textbook blocks are glove touching glove.

  • @travisdonaldstanley6420
    @travisdonaldstanley6420 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    One good thing about the P.S. is that when someone shoots on your forward leg you have one arm already charged to drop a elbow on the top of their head.
    So, convince them to shoot on you, and drop your weight, slam that elbow down.
    You can also do this with your rear leg. It's way back there and charged.

  • @travisdonaldstanley6420
    @travisdonaldstanley6420 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lead hand low also prevents the oppenent to see where it is coming from. They can't see it load up well.

    One big advantage of the P.S. is that you are ready for the Philly Shell-Bow.
    You are already half way turned.

    What I don't understand about strikers who use the philly shell is they only think about it with how it is used it in boxing. But it was also used in American Style Kickboxing, lead leg kicks and spinning kicks come out very natural from that stance. Now when I use I only have it at ranges where I can easily react to leg kicks. Once I'm in the pocket I might block and counter using it but as soon as I have that opportunity I'm squaring my stance and my guard is coming up. Then I pressure him back and have combos to get me back side ways in my philly shell at distance. This is more for kickboxing with low kicks though.

    I've only just read the video title but you couldn't have timed this better, I've been experimenting with the philly shell in my kickboxing sessions recently and because I'm not good with that kind of guard I'm getting tagged then told to keep my hands up. Interested to hear your opinion on this 👍

      @@zachleprieur2871 Yeah I was wondering if we had to make some adjustments for a good application of the philly shell in kickboxing or if it’s just not effective.
      I’m still a novice so I’m gonna take Joe’s advice and go back to practicing with a high guard but I’ll definitely try it again sometime.

    @TheClinchMagazine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Joe, I wanted to know if you are allowed to hit the rear part of the body [not the back of head though] in MMA and Kickboxing ? If it is allowed, then shouldn't the most obvious counter to Philly shell would be just roundhouse kick or simply strikes to the back of the torso/body ?

  • @DevilDogMartialArts-
    @DevilDogMartialArts- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good video! I think there are a few reasons why philly shell isn't used frequently in MMA. With the smaller gloves it's harder to close up the gaps in your guard. Also since MMA tends to fight from a longer range, it uses more straight punching and from the closer range where tight hooks and uppercuts are more common, you see more of a clinch engagement used. Because of this, the long guard or a high guard tend to be more useful. Personally, I like the philly shell as a transition guard, like when you have someone who tries to blitz on you, so you tighten up and pivot out of the danger to re-establish your range.

    This is a good stance for Karate style Kick-Boxers because they throw a lot of their kicks with the front leg. However, it's not so great for the Muay Thai stylist because it's impossible to get that rear leg off. As for MMA, you are too exposed to the single as well as Muay Thai style kicks...
