Such an amazing tone and vibrato! Sometimes the contra, when played by a mediocre technician, can sound sterile and hollow, but you, sir, give it such a depth of sound! Bravo!
I've been playing the bassoon for almost 4 years now and I love it to death. But, if there's an instrument any cooler than the bassoon, it's this. It's basically 2 of them together! Great video, thank you.
This is just a wonderful video! I never played anything but piano and some guitar, but all the full, low orchestral instruments are my favorites - cello, bass, oboe, bassoon, contrabassoon. I'm crazy about the expressions they make. (Ray Thomas of the Moody Blues once said there are instruments and notes that can make the bowels move and there is no doubt! I'd put the contrabassoon on that list! LOL) Love the part about muscle memory, too. It's so critical, just as it is with sports and dance. Thank you to Dominic!
I would substitute the oboe with the English horn (Cor Anglais) for lower notes and add the Bass Clarinet as well. The oboe is a treble clef instrument.
In regards to all the comments, I'm a clarinetist and a performance major, and I have to say that Contrabassoon is just so much more versatile and pleasant sounding than contrabass clarinet. Just my opinion, but I've heard both instruments played in many situations, and contrabassoon is just so more kind to the ear.
The contrabass clarinet is used mostly for rhythmic bass lines while the contrabassoon actually has a wide range of playing styles for an instrument of its size and character
HELL YA...playing bassoon for seven years ad i had the privilege of playing on Fox's secret 5 hole contra haha...love it! ive been waiting for bassoon/contra masterclass for a few weeks...and i was not disappointed!
This is the same instrument that you hear in The Sorcerer's Apprentice from Disney's Fantasia. In the broom scene, after Mickey chopped the broom into millions of pieces, the broom's pieces begin to come back to life. It's the contrabassoon that begins the solo. "Breaking Winds" did a terrific job of this!!
The score calls for a contrabass sarrusophone, a conical-bore, double-reed, brass instrument. However, most contemporary performances are on the contrabasson.
@@toddmichaelwillis if memory serves, the score calls for either of the two. There's also a whole theory about how French composers of the time may have seen the instruments as being 100% interchangeable (Contrabassoon is abbreviated as "Sarr." in Daphnis & Chloe), though, so who knows what was actually intended?
@thisistides97 Actually, the Oboe and Bassoon are two separate families. The bassoon has an instrument in it's family called the tenoroon, the oboe has an instrument in it's family called the bass oboe. They are both double reeds yes, but they aren't the same families. It's an easy confusion.
@JasonTongRulz Bassoon and oboe were technically a combined family i thought, Bassoon and Contrabassoon being the bass intruments of the oboe family, but i might be mistaken.
Meaning deep full rich sound, if you played on instead of the other it may not make a difference The Contrabassoon has the same sorta sound as the Contrabass Clarinet if you told someone to pick between wich sound was the Contrabassoon and witch was the Contrabass Clarinet they might not be able to tell you as long as the person doesent know much about music that is
Thank you very much sir, with your suggestions and ability i feel much more secure with the contrabassoon repertoire!!! Too bad I'm a tuba player......Phenomenal nontheless!
Anyone know if the Bach movement they give a PDF for is in a different key than the original, up a 5th. Is that right because that makes the range absurdly high.
@jowil93 Play some Holst. He seems to have a fetish for sexy instruments... Got an alto flute in there, and great double reed section including contra, english horn and bass oboe... WOOHOO
Such an amazing tone and vibrato! Sometimes the contra, when played by a mediocre technician, can sound sterile and hollow, but you, sir, give it such a depth of sound! Bravo!
Regardless of the instrument, it’s just Great to see someone who is totally in control and a Master of the instrument. Very inspiring.

there is truly nothing more terrifying than a "lonely entry" on contrabassoon. :P Learning to tame the beast is quite the task.
Such an amazing variation of tones from a beast of an instrument. Thanks

@Christopher Churcher i thought that too haha
I would substitute the oboe with the English horn (Cor Anglais) for lower notes and add the Bass Clarinet as well. The oboe is a treble clef instrument.
That instrument has some insanely beautiful overtones.

I play the bassoon.. It's the worlds most epic instrument. I really enjoy playing it. I'm fortunate to be able to.
There's so much nuances on playing that instrument. Everytime i see classes like that playing guitar gets easier
HELL YA...playing bassoon for seven years ad i had the privilege of playing on Fox's secret 5 hole contra haha...love it! ive been waiting for bassoon/contra masterclass for a few weeks...and i was not disappointed!
OMG it goes sooooooooooo deep, it made me laugh the first time he played... I love this =)
LOL I love the contrabassoon/contrabass clarinet fight goin' on down there! XD
I was gonna comment the same thing, and saw yours, and I thought, "Wow, I'm not alone in this world for once."
I've been playing bass for too many years and feel considerable shame that until recently I'd never heard of this beautiful beast of an instrument.
this is epic.
Bruce Willis is teaching to play contrabasson.

Wow! I never knew that nor that that instrument existed. Amazing!

Wonderful Sound ❤
oh damn! i want that in the high school!!!! i'll play it!!
Now this is an instrument that would be fun to play!
if i had one of these.. i would put it in a glass box, and worship it every day. :)
@thisistides97

contrabassoons are beast
Wow, that thing could kill at 50 paces. It sounds AWESOME.
@JasonTongRulz Bassoon and oboe were technically a combined family i thought, Bassoon and Contrabassoon being the bass intruments of the oboe family, but i might be mistaken.
Geez I never knew an instrument like that could go that low!!! :O
I like jazz music so much more than symphony music. But i still find the videos enjoyable.
@dctomm Yes, Mother Goose is literally on every audition. Left hand is on most auditions.
Meaning deep full rich sound, if you played on instead of the other it may not make a difference The Contrabassoon has the same sorta sound as the Contrabass Clarinet if you told someone to pick between wich sound was the Contrabassoon and witch was the Contrabass Clarinet they might not be able to tell you as long as the person doesent know much about music that is
I WISH I COULD PLAY THIS, BUT I'VE NEVER EVEN SEEN ONE UP CLOSE
That's awesome! Thanks for the answer!
I'm playing the Cor Anglais in this piece at the moment and the guy playing the contrabassoon in this is surprisingly similar to this.
Dominic Morgan was the Contrabssonist
What a range!
first time seeing this instrument!!! love it in contrabassoon in mother goose though!
Thank you very much sir, with your suggestions and ability i feel much more secure with the contrabassoon repertoire!!!
Too bad I'm a tuba player......Phenomenal nontheless!
OMG I'm such a contrabassoon junkie. This was like heroin.
Wow! Wonderful!!! I find the high(er) notes equally alluring to hear! Beautiful! May I ask how heavy this instrument is?
Incredible. Simply incredible.
Do Contrabassoon fingerings differ from Bassoon fingerings? Just curious.
(Me talking to my Bassoon) It's not that I don't love you Bassoon..... its just I found somebody so much better.... THE CONTRABASSOON!
If you guys like low sounds, you should check out the Octobass xD
Now I want to give up the clarinet and play this 😫
ask to switch to bassoon, and transition to this in college
Get your wallet ready :O
It's 30 grand!
there are slight variations on certain notes but generally the same
Sick bass! :)
i hope contraforte will be next generation contrabasson
PV0GP YES!! Please that would be so cool!
Very nice video, useful things. But why isn't the masterclass about the actual audition repertoire?
OMG i was like "whoa...thats soooo low!!" :O its pretty cool
B flat, the next-to-lowest note on the piano. Some have a low A extension, I hear, though I've never actually seen one.
What a horn!
awesome
Hmm a doctor who theme song here would be awesome!
+Draganko123 yes
I just played a concert that included Beethoven 9....I regretted volunteering to play the contra part once I saw the part :3
omg this is a fucking epic instrument
Will the band be able to hear me now?
this guy should be in carnal decay!
Anyone know if the Bach movement they give a PDF for is in a different key than the original, up a 5th. Is that right because that makes the range absurdly high.
if i'm not mistaken, Eb is the tenoroon? I forget if tenor is in F or Eb
I play bassoon. I would love to change
@NinjaCOOKIEZZ74 you can
This instrument is so beautiful.
I'm so jealous of the oboe family :c
@BurningMeUpInside
Your school has a contrabassoon? o_O
feel da bass
Fine thanks
is he actually principal contrabassoon in a big orchestra or is he just third or fourth bassoon
@BurningMeUpInside your school has a contrabassoon?
Voldmort played Contrabasson
Maybe I get to play Contrabass Clarinet over the summer And nextyear at college my first year yay
Did you get to
No the contrabass Clarinet sounds just as good as the Contrabassoon
Is it hard switching from bassoon to contrabassoon?
Turn on the automatic captions xD "a super thick forty" WTF
@venskus2009 Yeah, that's why all classical composers after the 18th century write for contrabass clarinet. HA!
@vacuumlover1 I don't play clarinet.
sounds sinister
@MarcoAJuarez Dominic is tall though.
"... the Eb, which can sound rather flat ..."
@cranberry133 ahhhhhhh i see misnomer. my apologies >
Not an awful lot, but yes a little. Eb is the most different.
@17ckehrli dude, have some respect! Every musical instrument have their place, you can't just say that, have some respect, dude!
Nope... I played a contra some a few weeks ago, and... it's a horribly scary beast once you start going into the upper register.
Are the bassoon and contrabassoon fingerings the same?
They are, basically, the same. The contra just reads an octave above its actual pitch, so it reads the same clef as bassoon.
What's the lowest note the contrabassoon can reach?
Its the B flat2
Does anyone know what brand contra he plays on?
I believe its a fox. its nearly 30k on musicians friend
I think it's a Mollenhauer actually
Anyone else think this gentleman looks like a long-lost cousin to Bruce Willis?
A Contraba de what?
holy fuck on the low note...
dubassoon step
1:05 muzak for depressed ferrets not in love.
I feel like contrabasoons always have the most boring parts
I don't get it. :(
@jowil93 Play some Holst. He seems to have a fetish for sexy instruments... Got an alto flute in there, and great double reed section including contra, english horn and bass oboe... WOOHOO
Nevermind! I get it now. :P
You should play game of thrones theme song.
@NinjaCOOKIEZZ74 u be surprised
4:35
@lennic95 Sorry similar to the guy playing in my conservatoire ^^
Oh sure, a contrabassoon is allowed in the symphony, but a Euphonium? NOOOO....
@venskus2009 I know people who've played in bands at Carnegie Hall... not that impressive.
@venskus2009 No.
Ma questo è Bruce Willis
