Elated to see such a clear explanation of the technical challenges harpists encounter. The late Gail Barber was my best friend, and I used to watch her marking the pedal changes and changing music composed as if the harp were a piano to something that can actually be played on the harp. This brought back such wonderful memories and was presented in a truly helpful way. Thank you for bringing tears to my eyes.
I came across this video via the double bass tuition....and I just thought I'd have a listen. But man....I couldn't look away. A lovely way you have about you Karen, and not patronising at all. And the hours that must have gone into that...I am so impressed. And practice? Ain't like you can lug it about. Very glad I stopped by.
Brilliant video. I never, in a million years, had any idea that a harp had pedals. I'm in a bluegrass band, but adore classical as well. You can well imagine, harps aren't too often used in bluegrass. ;-)
you now how theres those instruments that are like, "oh that looks really easy, ill play it well" and then you try it and are like "WTF!"...yeah well the harp isnt even like that. I mean the instrument LOOKS so damn hard in the first place, i simply couldnt imagine playing it at that level. But i think its one of those instruments that takes an insane amount of work and practice and it pays off by an absolutely splendid sound. Much respect
@Vaylemn No musician starts out needed the most expensive instruments. It's an investment over time. I'm a cellist, and when I first started 16 years ago I rented instruments. Then I paid payments toward a student level cello, and traded that for a higher quality one and the same for my professional quality one now. There is no sure way of knowing you are serious about music for the long hall at the beginning. (But yes, piano's are very expensive but you wouldn't start with a grand piano.)
Honestly, the pedals seem to me to be the most daunting part of playing this type of harp, looks like the bass pedals for a pipe organ down there, Yikes!
The lady has a dry wit, but in that piece it is a likely schedule, but remember the 61 lever changes in the last bit, so when you are playing, you had better be at the top of your game.
This is the on,y instrument I've seen where it seems an absolute miracle that those sounds can be produced by human hands.
My blood pressure went down by 20pts the second she started playing. That was gorgeous.

peter robinson you can’t lug a piano about either...
@@ytyt3922 pianos are everywhere though. Harps are not very common to come by.

what she really means is "move over bitches, imma show y'all how it's done..."
shit got real.
What the actual fuck? This makes me not want to call myself a musician anymore. Outstanding.
elegant instrument, played by an elegant lady :)
I never really took the time to listen to any harp music. Its absolutely beautiful.
even without any knowledge of a harp, i am still amazed with Karen's teaching. i have never seen a harp
We love you, Ms. Vaughan! You are a beautiful gift to harpists all over the world. ❤ ♫ ❤ ♫ ❤ ♫ ❤ ♫

This instrument is so intimidating.
The harp looks so difficult ! yet its so beautiful !!! especially when played with so much talent such as this lady's !!!!
Your harp sounds so sweet too, and in great tune.
Thank you Master Karen. Best Regards

I love the harp
I am always amazed with people with talent. As I have none.
You surely do. Just stop criticizing yourself and you'll start discovering some of them;)
Karen, you are an amazing harpist! WOW!
Thank you so much Karen! I really enjoyed your tutorial and playing of the excerpts!
She is amazing!
Karen Vaughan is so awesome!

I think this instrument is very hard to play well. But i love this instrument. the sound is so nice

Karen those are such nice shoes to use the harp pedals.
Very wonderful tutorial from a master harpist! Thank you for the lesson. Very helpful....
Thank You. God Bless.🙏
I can only say gorgeous...I am learning how to play the harp too and this remarkable lesson certainly will help me.
Beautiful.
What she's saying is there's an incredibly long rest for the harp player.
Wunderful
I find this video very useful, as I'm learning the solo cadenza from Swan Lake. Thanks for the video!
from PERSIA with Passion
I know, right! This is where my jaw dropped on the floor. :D
Crazy composition, crazy delivery. O_O
I wish my music teacher would teach all our classes like this
Practical and helpful.
Maravilhoso som !!!!!!

Baffling troubling amazing instrument played by a master. It is very humbling to try to write for, but getting it right has wonderful rewards
How about the Cadenza from Capriccio Espagnol in the 4th Movement?
@shaldana Well, there's a first time for everything. Only the big harps (concert harps) have the pedals; the smaller harps won't have any pedals.
Great playing and easy to understand tips. Something about this is almost like a cookery programme. Do you cook?
she has cute bows on her heels!!! :)
I love playing the harp :)
LOL at around 2:06 when she says F-sharp.
Giuseppe Verdi: Pissing off Harpists since 1862!
que clase de Arpa es esa, me parece un maravilloso instrumento aunque no se nada de ellas, saludos
2:06 points at the F sharp _while giving the middle finger_ 😏
More importantly she said it with a straight face!
What kind of harp would you buy as a beginner? (Like brand/price/size)
erro na tradução: key changes = mudanças de tonalidade, não "mudanças de clave"
"and then the second harp can go home, the first harp can have dinner and come back for act 4 for 1 aria...." xXxLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLxXx

Impressive
11:35 - 12:12 is awesome.
woooooooooooooooow!!!!!!!!!
Can anyone please tell me what chord she is playing at 2:10??!!
My favourite part is 03:42 Just so beautiful!
👏👏👏👏💙🌹
Look at her eyes.
They're always looking down to read!
Do you have the music sheet for this? PLEASE
IMSLP ;)
The 2nd harp can go home and the 1st harp can have dinner lolololololllllo555555
I'm a pianist but i think this video is charming ;)
due to price, beginners usually Rent a harp, and a more affordable harp to rent, to really start with, would be a lever harp. and you go by there~
@11:36 The beginning of a Ballet class on harp
Is it wrong that somehow this arouses me?
Hahaha. I actually enjoyed watching this, and I'm not even a harpist...
What did she say around 3:35-3:40
"But Zabel told Tchaikovsky". xD
Honestly, the pedals seem to me to be the most daunting part of playing this type of harp, looks like the bass pedals for a pipe organ down there, Yikes!
iam guessing classical guitar would be too easy for her
>:O Oi! I saw that!! 2:04
11:36
WOW TOTAL BABE
She looks like a harp player.
she's hot
If you want to get a job in an orchestra play the viola, harp, or horn.
3:45 Zelda LTTP
Something about a rippling effect
Is it really true that in real live performance "the second harp can go home, the first harp can have dinner, and then come back"??
The lady has a dry wit, but in that piece it is a likely schedule, but remember the 61 lever changes in the last bit, so when you are playing, you had better be at the top of your game.
GILF
Be great if she moved in next door!
She's a Karen but the cool type
Clearly not very well written for the harp Verdi...
