True fan of Band of Brothers and I just recently found your channel and can’t get enough! Great job on your research and travel to the WW2 grounds where the greatest generation fought so bravely for our freedom! Can’t say enough! Thanks
Last night I finished episode 6. The series is most excellent. It confirms everything I've ever said about the air war. I thank God I never had to do that. I have nothing but respect to the generation that did it for me.
That scene where they hit IP, start their turn and the bomberdier calls out enemy air at 11. Then you see the escorts (P-51s) race to the front to intercept the fighters with their contrails off in the distance. It's just an incredible scene.
My granddad was an engine mechanic in the 9th Air Force. His Squadron used Douglas A-20 Havocs and Douglas A-26 Invaders. He said that the most nerve wracking time for the ground crews was waiting for the aircraft to get back in from a mission and see which of the crews made it home. In the attack and medium bombers they were usually much lower and flying much faster, meaning the faced more ground fire. One of the nice things about the Invaders was, once they had dropped their bombs, the A-26 was very fast. Versions of it saw service all the way to Vietnam
Privileged to have visited Duxford museum near Cambridge UK where a still flying B17 ‘ Sally B’ is based and in the American section of the museum a static one also . Masters of the Air is brilliant and so different of necessity to Band of Brothers but shows the horrendous attrition and terror these brave young men faced on a daily basis . We owe so much to them .
JD & Erik, If you're ever in Central Ohio, stop by the Champaign Aviation Museum in Central Ohio. They are currently restoring a B-17 named Champaign Lady, and you can see the original drawings and parts list for B-17's. They also have a restored B-25 Mitchell as well as a C-47 anf other WW2 aircraft. The staff there are great, and are proud to closely show off the great work they are doing. On another note, I must have spent 20 minutes looking at that Pug bomber jacket at the show! It was incredible.
My son and I went to a local bookstore today in Pulaski County and we bought Masters of the Air, not realizing it was a "tv" show. We don't watch tv and we don't stream, so the only way we could watch it is to get it on DVD's. We also weren't aware of this event in Louisville. Glad you posted it on the channel.
Thank you for featuring a 380th Bomb Group USAAF jacket. The 531st Squadron served from Long Field, near Hayes Creek in the Northern Territory Australia in 1943/44. Lest We Forget.
Ok I only cried once in Band of Brothers but Master of the Air I have cried in every episode. This series has been so heart braking. Even after reading the book I can never imagine what these men went through.
Wow! That helmet is absolutely amazing!!! Re-reading the chapter about Jack currently - fabulous book - The Rifle 2. What a fantastic video, missing only Jack, himself, with that helmet.
Last week my son was searching on a b17 crash site here in the Netherlands and found two of the metal plates that are in the protection piece for the Flack gun in the aircraft. He was so happy. 7 of the crew jumped out, the gunner under the plane died at impact, the second pilot dropped dead because his parachute didn't open. The pilot survived and had a long story after his crash.
Very cool 👍 you're making me sorry I didn't go 😅 I'm about 20 pages from the end of A Wing and a Prayer. Sure they took a little bit of artistic license with Master of the Air, but it follows Crosby's story pretty well.
I stopped by the Gettysburg Museum of History on February 19th (Monday) and unfortunately it was closed, possibly because of the snow storm that blew in earlier that morning! I knew I was taking my chances at this time of year on a long drive from the southern US but, hey, at least I know it exists. I did get a coffee at the Ragged Edge Coffee House in downtown Gettysburg so shout out to them.
Hi JD I know this isn't on the same topic as the video but I was wondering if you would ever consider doing videos or something about the Vietnam war? I have been watching your channel for a while now and I've noticed that you have never really talked about that topic very much. I was also wondering if you have ever heard of Ron Kovic or read his book Born on the 4th of July?
At 1:54 Does anybody have the contact of the person who has the flak jacket and other items of Lt. C.E. Magnuson? I have a navigator case with an ID tag and a few other things with the same name and serial number. As soon as I saw it I jumped out of my chair and went through my collection, and sure enough, it is the same airman. Absolutely wild. So if anybody has their contact info please let me know!
MATT LEITCH ! BOB , Floyd Talbot, I don't have the Apple subscription yet mate. Gifted an I-Pad on Black Friday 2023, , so maybe 3 months free when I fire it up ! ! I will watch MOA just based on a BOB veteran actor recommendation though I doubt it will beat you guys ! Cheers MATT . mate . from an expat in Texas ! BOB forever !
Y'all have got to stop comparing MotA to BoB and the Pacific. Watch it and enjoy it as it's own thing. It was never gonna be as good as Band, nothing can be. Be grateful that we've got a well made show about WWII to enjoy and stop expecting perfection.
I’ve absolutely agree but I still love Band of Brothers because without them I don’t think we would have had Masters of the Air and The Pacific. We owe a lot to all these shows for bringing these heroes to us.
I think I’m alone in my sentiment on the show. I genuinely don’t enjoy it. It feels more about the drama than anything, but that’s only my opinion. My dad loves it and keeps telling me I’m crazy.
Nah. I'd say common consensus is that it's very mediocre. Critics and audience a like. Never have I've seen such a big name show fly so under radar before. Completely silent.
Characters you don't recognise or care about, nice aerial action , unnecessary padding scenes which should have been used to get you to actually know more than three of the guys names
The series has been a huge disappointment to me. To much Hollywood BS. My Father was in Europe in Bombers at the same time. If a Group or Squadron Commander let his flight stay with a strangler he would have been court martialed. Poor series. I cancelled my Apple subscription.

The series has been outstanding so far.
Where can we watch this
@@tod2992 - Apple TV+. 100% worth it.
I’ve been loving it since the first episode. But episode 6-7 it’s really slowed down. I am hopeful that the last two will bring it home for me.
sadly the series was very underwhelming for myself and most others.

Very much so.
Watching the Little Friends bravely and eagerly charging forward to engage the enemy and protect their comrades must've been an awe-inspiring sight.
Thank you JD and Erik for the tour and showing the memorabilia. Thank you!
💯👍👊
My father was USAAF. He was with 15th Air Force stationed near Foggia, Italy.
My great grandpa was 15th Air Force too! He was with the 463rd Bomb Group, 774th Squadron.

I have always been fascinated with the B17 ever since I watched 12 O'clock High as a child. I have 2 Eighth Airforce jackets and caps.
👍🏻
The most famous bomber in the "Forgotten 5th" was Old 666. The Fat Electrician has a fantastic video about their exploits.
My barber is the nephew of John sarnoski
Great vid JD! Love MotA series. Gramps was 8th AAF, but not 100th.

I'm still mindblown by the "John Moran" helmet!!!! Would love to be a bug on the wall seeing his reaction!!
Yeah, that’d be cool as heck.
Absolutely LOVED the show
From laughing to yelling and a lot of crying
380th covered the Dutch east Indies, hence the Dutch flag on the back of the jacket. What a piece!
👍🏻
@@TheHistoryUnderground is it for sale JD? #askingforafriend
I've had a love for B-17s since I met the pilot of the Memphis Belle at an airshow when I was a kid. I think the series has been incredible so far!
I hope they put this movie on DVD so I can buy it.
Ok I only cried once in Band of Brothers but Master of the Air I have cried in every episode. This series has been so heart braking. Even after reading the book I can never imagine what these men went through.
It’s really really good.
I've cried as well every episode. But because it's so incredibly bad.
wow you are really sensitive..

Wow! That helmet is absolutely amazing!!! Re-reading the chapter about Jack currently - fabulous book - The Rifle 2. What a fantastic video, missing only Jack, himself, with that helmet.

Fantastic video. Absolutely loved that painted up Luftwaffe helmet. What an incredible piece of history.
Visited Thorpe Abbots just last weekend and there is separate sections dedicated to certain raids and one for Rosie Rosenthall.
Fascinating artefacts. Good to see the guys from SNAFU docs in the video.
👍🏻
Thank you J.D. and Eric for your Amazing video. I always learn something new about WW 2. You guys put out superior work.

JD Shame on you. There was a BAR under that flack jacket. You didn't show it. LOL I still LOVE your channel. Keep up the awesome work.

Really enjoyed the video mate been love the series I watching next episode can't wait for the next video mate
Glad you enjoyed!
Band of brothers and the pacific are totally different, as is aviation verses infantry.
I was gifted a piece of the original runway from Thorpe abbots in england
There used to be cigarettes in those old ration packs.. they had their priorities squared away..

Apple TV+
❤❤❤
Very interesting!
Joey and his dad are there
Yep! Talked to them for a bit.
How often is that show? Thanks for this JD
Once a year.
It would be fun to watch Erik out fakes….
I thought you were going to prank him? 😅
Band of Brothers was a 10,Masters is a 5 at the most
😦
Band of brothers was a masterclass in making multiple characters likable and memorable...Masters of the air.... isn't
Take it back!
I’ll probably get labeled an apostate for this but I think Masters of The Air has outdone Band of Brothers. It’s just been awesome so far.
I honesty may agree. I’ve freaking loved it so far
You’re not alone:)

@@cyndiebill6631 It doesn't diminish Band of Brothers to me and you're right, without their success we wouldn't be enjoying Masters of the Air now.

Yeah, you're crazy. Loving every minute of it, some really powerful stuff
MOTA is too polished, they threw in every cliche they could think of, wasn’t worth waiting 10 years for
If you read the source material, you’ll find that much of the script and dialogue pulls from what those guys actually said and experienced.
Who cares what this actor thinks?
The bitter irony is that you are here commenting under the assumption that people care what you think. 🙂😉
You cared enough to comment 😂
Masters of the air is crap conspired to BOB and The Pacific.
