  • A big THANK YOU to all of you guys for subscribing, commenting and making this community really big and successful!
    You did it: smarter people than me have worked hard on a solution for the PHEV battery problem... and found it.
    The DIY Triple Procedure which calibrates your software to the battery. And you can do it at home.
    All the details will be coming soon on this channel.
    I'm still torn apart about the software/battery problem. If the so DBCAM is correct (as Mitsubishi says), we see fully healthy batteries in 4-5 year old cars and but also totally f****d up batteries in new 2019 models. What is correct and why is it like this?

    Fact can be stranger than fiction and from something small a much bigger impact than first considered can be achieved. Good one Andy and to everyone who's spent their time, effort and knowledge working out what's going on and what could be the solution. One of the best things about the internet. People like Andy and the community help a lot of people make informed choices and not to feel isolated in their problems. That would have a material impact in terms of sales and choices made by end users.
    We would hope consumer law and companies do the right thing, but that's not always the case.

    Hey from Portugal! So last year my dad bought a PHEV, since then he usually uses pure EV mode, the range that appeared was 42kms. Now it just shows 35kms. He went to Mitsubishi and they didn’t say nothing! They said it was all good, and the reason was just that my dad wasn’t careful while driving, what does not make any sense... I feel bad for my dad because this his new car, last one was a Mitsubishi Carisma from 1999, i was looking forward for the PHEV, and for Mitsubishi but now this is just sad.
    Thank for your awesome videos! Hope Mitsubishi does something about this issue

    My diesel from MY2008 had a recall in 2018 for the windscreen wiper motor because it was potentially unsafe. Certainly MMC can do a BMU replacement for their faulty and polluting PHEV's because they are using more fuel than neccesary and lugging around perfectly good batteries without applying them for driving EV driving! #PHEVgate

    Hi Andy, think you have hit the nail on the head, how many of these vehicles have Mitsubishi made and sold worldwide? If the problem is the BMU and they cannot make alterations to it's software, and therefore the only way is to replace it with a new one, think of the cost to them. Mitsubishi might think a recall of these vehicles would look bad for them (although I always think the opposite when this is done by a manufacturer). The bad publicity they are getting now is only going to grow as your and others airing this problem shows with the viewing figures you are all getting. Better Mitsubishi owns up and calls for a recall to solve this problem rather than let it fester. I would buy one of these vehicles tomorrow if they didn't have this fault. I can't believe Mitsubishi can't see the harm this is doing to them and their reputation and even potential greater sales if it's sorted. Keep up the pressure and good work you are doing and let's hope they see sense. 👍

    Grateful for all this work that you have been working on for us consumers, it should no longer go between your issues explaining that something is wrong with the calculation of the charge on the battery in this car which should be repaired, this causes Increase consumer spending and should be regarded as a slight defect, it should be on the shoulders of the manufacturer to pay for all the work and hassle out of showing consumers the obvious design deficiencies encountered during your measurements on this car.
    It is time for those who service these cars to ask for instructions on repairing the charge on battery and loading and requiring guidance but not overlapping.

    The 2014 PHEV with the used battery that achieved 39.9Ah after DBCAM is probably correct. Due to the "artificial" degradation going on since 2014, the battery was never put under constant stress, it was being under-charged since the owner bought the car. Battery studies have shown that if you keep the battery charge near the sweet spot somewhere in the middle, then degradation is almost NIL.
    So to re-frame, think about like this. The battery is programmed to not use the bottom or top 20% (or whatever it is), AND, out of the showroom it was calibrated to 38Ah, with an additional artificial degradation slapped on top.
    The Mitsubishi programmers are either geniuses, or complete idiots. If they were geniuses then as part of the regular 12 month service routine they would include a BMU reset and DBCAM. So, they're idiots that happened upon a coincidental method to keep battery health at an optimum state.

    • @unpluggedEV
      @unpluggedEV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Every full charge of the PHEV puts the battery to real 100%. 4.1V is 100%SoC as per the Yuasa specs for the LEV40 cells. Even it did not use the full capacity from the beginning (38Ah) it was still charged to 4.1V. This should have caused some degradation over the years. Even keeping the battery on 65%SoC of this time frame would have caused some deg...

  • @copysoftltd
    @copysoftltd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm wondering as you said why seems there is no degradation in 4-5 years old cars and after triple procedure the SOH restores almost completely. May be there is a top "hidden" buffer. May be the real capacity of the batteries is bigger and the real degradation is still in this buffer. That's why Mitsubishi says that battery will be usable until the end of vehicle's life.

    • @unpluggedEV
      @unpluggedEV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would be like in the Ioniq Electric where the battery has 31.8kWh but only 28kWh are available.
      However, this is not the case in the PHEV. It always charges to 4.1V which is 100% real SoC of the battery as per manufacturer. Because of that we don't see any regen if fully charged, the battery cannot take more energy.

    Hi Andy, You are THE BEST reviewer I found on internet when it comes to Mitsubishi Outlander. I also have an idea to buy a beast and still evaluating my options. I am from Sri Lanka and the market price of a used 2014 model is roughly around USD 32,000. I am evaluating Nissan x-trail model as well. (2016 used vehicle market price is ¬ USD 30K ). I checked the battery replacement cost from the agent in Sri lanka and he said its around USD 12,000, and that is a VERY VERY BIG concern for me it hybrid battery fails. I checked few models (YOM 2014) and dnt know how long battery lasts? Do you think will it fail in next 1-2 year time? If something happens (100% battery failure) could I still start the vehicle and run in Petrol mode? Kindly give some advisors . btw thank you for your time and for these great video series

    The "triple procedure" seems to work very well but the underlying problem is still there, as soon as you start to use the car the buggy software starts to lower the SoH at an insane rate, that is nothing that this procedure can fix, we need a updated software.
    Someone who has also a Nissan Leaf said that the Leaf also calculates a degradation of the battery, but it is only 0.01 Ah every couple of weeks, so it is only 10% of what the PHEV calculates and with longer interwall.

    • @vferrandobe
      @vferrandobe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. We need a fix. But having in mind the official answer from MMC, I wouldn't expect any fix soon.
      And in the mean time, if we have the means to do the procedure at home by our own means, we can do it every year and keep the range at good levels.

      Another point worth thinking about is that the 30 Kwh hour Leaf was supposed to have lost more battery capacity than the 24 Kwh batteries did, are we now seeing a similar decline with the 2019 PHEV? Also, looking to the future, Nissan and Mitsubishi are now in alliance (with each other and with Renault) and the technological exchanges will produce advances which may be applied to older models.

    I've not long purchased a used 2017 phev, 80k miles and the battery range when starting claims 21miles range from a full charge, and it appears reasonably accurate based on my normal commute, so I assume the BMU has made false assumptions over its life or the batteries have indeed degraded?

      Don't those have 16kwh batteries? Massive buffer at either end. GM get some stick and deservedly so in some cases. But the volt is a really nice piece of engineering.
      10kwh out of 16 basically is 60%, so full =80, empty=20. The sweet spot. Plus it's thermally managed with a liquid system. Deg should be extremely low for such a design.

    Surely all the triple procedure "fixes" is completely irrelevant in real life? The batteries charge up to 4.1v and go down to 3.8v. The difference between them is the capacity. The BMU is "measuring" capacity and comparing the calculated capacity against the nominal capacity but it's just an estimate. Sure if you confuse the hell out of the BMU it might think your capacity is better than it is for a while but it's not going to magically make the actual capacity any more or any less. Batteries degrade and the software is just trying to model that. Mitsibushi clearly didn't do a great job but then who cares? It's irrelevant in a PHEV. In a pure EV in which range is more critical it might be important (if it says 40 miles and you run out after 10 it's an issue) but in a PHEV with a full tank of petrol? I'll try and maximise my EV range but I don't care what the car thinks it could / should be. Surely all the "procedures" are just to create a theoretical capacity on a screen. Good for bragging rights in the pub but not much else.
