That backfire is the turbo anti lag system in action. Without going into to crazy detail, its very good for performance because it effectively eliminates turbo lag. On the other and the nature of the system is pretty harsh on the turbo itself.

No they work by igniting gas in the exhaust manifold to spin the turbo, typically burning out your mufflers lol
I think there are systems that can catch the fire so it doesnt bang .. flame traps but might actually also stop the als effect
