I imported quit a few European 930s. I really loved playing with the turbo lag. Leave a light at low revs and then stand on it and the engine would make intake noise and you might see someone start to accelerate to beat you. Then the revs, boost and acceleration would come on, the front end would pop up to the end of suspension travel and if some was trying to race you they realize they really weren't. 80s and 90s gray market.

Because they are. Turbos kill a car's exhaust note so much. Case in point, Pafani Huayra v Pagani Zonda, but if you want a more direct comparison, the Mercedes V12s off which both cars were based.
turbo engines are more quiet than naturally aspirated ones, antilag, pops and crackles don't count as the engine note, so yeah turbo cars are less loud, best example porsche gt3 rs engine note vs Porsche gt2 rs
Well modern turbo cars sound awful.
With those pure software aided 'fart' noises and bland exhaust notes they're quiet.

No engines make loud noise.
All the noise you hear from a car is literally exhaust noise.
Anti-lag is made by forcing fuel through the turbo and back through the engine and out the exhaust, so yeah, it's all exhaust noise.
Engines themselves are relatively quiet

I love pops and bangs. But when it's done purely through software management it sound awful.
Proper antilag through mechanical tuning sounds much better. That BMW was forced too much
