He is a weak, selfish man with no leadership qualities beyond scant charisma and the ability to use some simple and weak shouts.

"Why on earth Mercer Frey, a mortal, thought he could outsmart Nocturnal a Daedric Prince-" Because the Grey Fox did it. He did it, cucked Nocturnal out of their Cowl using an Elder Scroll, and made the details of doing it highly publicized. The man basically wrote an autobiography labeled "Here's how I fucked over the Daedric Prince Nocturnal." And we know Frey admired the Grey Fox. So is it any wonder that the man tried to emulate someone that was essentially his idol?

3:08 That’s the thing Avarti. He DID build a lavish lifestyle. And that’s what got his predecessor, Gaius, suspicious of him to begin with. You know? The guy Mercer murdered to become Guild Master? The guy who’s death he framed on said mans lover? Also the Grey Fox who stole from Nocturnal is the founder of the Cyrodiil thieves guild. Every other thieves guild by the time of Marrowind onwards is completely independent from each other.
Yeah and got himself cursed for it. However, theres a bit of a difference between some random thief stealing from Nocturnal and a person who is supposed to be one of her servants sworn to protect her shrine. The former is impressive, the latter is pure stupidity and would be taken as a far greater insult. As such, the Gray Fox got off comparatively lightly with a curse that could be broken, while Mercer will likely end up being used as Nocturnals footstool/punching bag/fed to her ravens for the next eternity.
If the Skeleton Key can unlock _anything,_ can't he just _unlock_ the secret to eternal life and thus postpone his servitude indefinitely? Makes me wonder if both Miraak and Mankar Camoran went for the wrong patron Daedra. The Prince of Forbidden Knowledge and The Prince of Destruction hold unimaginable power, but if you want that power for _yourself,_ your best bet is to _steal_ it.
Also, the Grey Fox in Oblivion was way smarter. He actually successfully ripped off Nocturnal because he broke the curse and rewrote history to where the curse doesn't even exist. Not only that but he got his old life back being a count of Anvil with his wife and the cherry on top is he got Lex to be his right hand man, the guy who was hunting him down for ages and NO ONE will ever know this because the Hero of Kavatch has the cowl so everyone will only see him as the Grey Fox. Honestly, you need to do a video on the Grey Fox as a companion to this video, showing what an intelligent Thieves Guild leader does.
Mercer never has to worry about what Nocturnal will do with his soul after his death in my playthroughs. As far as I’m aware she has no way of retrieving it from the soul cairn.
uno bruh momento I imagine all the daedric lords would be pretty pissed if the Dragonborn made deals with them which should seal the soul’s destiny but doesn’t because Akatosh is like “bitch, that belongs to me”.
@@SpookyMarine still, they are gonna hunt you down when you leave and they finally recover. It won't be pretty. And that does not even CONSIDER what nocturnal would do to him...
Jason .C True but my point was that the thieves guild had really lost its touch and Mercer played on that fact. Yeah the nightingale and nocturnal would be a problem but Nocturnal was really relying on the nightingale which was down to its last member getting to recruiting both you and Byrnolf (who was really reluctant on the fact) Karliah was not willing to cross blades with Mercer which implies Mercer was a far superior swordsman. It’s hard to say if without the Dragonborn if the nightingale could even take down Mercer. So is it really fair to call Mercer an idiot if he’s pretty much on par and perhaps even superior when it comes to stealth and swordsmanship to the other nightingale, one of which he was able to kill, and frame the other? In my opinion, no. If Mercer can take on a nightingale, then how would the thieves guild be able to touch him? He could cut down all their members easily, and outsmart them. Considering he killed a guild master and took his place and turned the entire guild against the nightingale.... yeah I doubt the thieves guild would be able to effectively hunt him down without the nightingale.
It took the Dragon born, and a Nightengale to even get them to see they were getting money stolen. Even then, Mercer could have framed Karliah if the DragonBorn did end up dying in the ruins.

I think theres an arguement to be made that Mercer wasnt a total idiot. The skeleton key can unlock a lot more than just doors. Perhaps he planned to unlock the secrets to immortality. If he was successful, he had no reason to rush his plans. He could do it slowly and carefully
That's why he's so powerful, in-lore, and why he can blast the cave apart in the final battle. He unlocked his physical potential and was apparently planning to try to unlock his lifespan.

That recruitment reason is the reason i got a mod that makes brynjolf not approach you until you have a specific level in various thief skills and stolen a certain amounts worth of goods. Makes much more sense
Well we can probably say that the lore it isn't the dragon born and he probably didn't came to the person, the person came to him with a robbed good and he noticed it, and then he presented himself
I like when my character has a bunch of sneak /middle gear and Mercer goes “you’re quite loud for someone who claimed to be a thief.” Big talk for the guy who screams and charges at every draugr instead of trying to hide
This dumbass tripped every wire on the way to find Karliah. He even got smacked with the spike door. Man took no accountability and I honestly just let him feebly fight all the draugr by himself while I sat in a shadowy corner, silently munching on bread.
Caveat: the mentally I have always thought went with Nocturnal's curse on the cowl was something of a backhanded compliment. She was impressed that someone stole from her as much as she was angry, so the curse made whoever wore it the best criminal possible but also made it so the couldn't have a personal life. A "I gave you EXACTLY what you wished for" sort of curse.
If you cross the thieves guild to the degree mercer did i wouldnt put it past brynolf to use the back sacrament and mercer would likely become arnbjourns snack.
brinjolf's approach isn't random actually. By meeting a set of requirements, it's revealed in dialogue, that he knew more or less a bout the dragon born since, he/she was stopped by the guards at the gate. he gained enough knowledge by "sizing your mark" and approached the DB comfortably.
Drago 303 and considering most of us got that money from butchering bandits, and possibly theft... yeah he’s completely correct in saying we didn’t earn it cleanly.

@@hayato1886 Yes, but Emer never promised his soul and servitude to Nocturnal, he got her approval due to his skill and audacity, Mercer disrespected her with his betrayal.

Personally I actually liked Mercer frey. So I’m going to play the devils advocate and disagree with you that he’s an idiot. Nocturnal and the skeleton key: Nocturnals skeleton keys has many allegedly mystical powers in the lore. In the game it’s a lot more boring albeit helpful being basically an unlimited lockpick, but lore wise it’s alleged that the key can open up any door, even to other dimensions. It’s possible that if Mercer wanted to he could escape death itself. Or if not that gain the knowledge of how to by using the skeleton key to obtain it. Maybe by going to hermaous moras dimension and reading one of his black books perhaps? This is obviously no guarantee that nocturnal wouldn’t just bump him off of course, she is a daedric prince after all. But there is at least some logic to stealing the skeleton key. There is also another possible reason why he stole the key, because he’d know that nocturnal would try to curse it. Think about it. Mercer has been planning to steal from the thieves guild for a long time. Probably before he murdered gallas. If you were Mercer who despite being wealthy and the leader of the thieves guild, was surrounded by equally wealthy people with a lot of power and influence. How would you go about weakening them? You’d cut off their revenue naturally. The curse of nocturnal, even if it would reduce the amount of money you’d be able to steal from them, would still be largely a boon to you in the long run. Because unlike everyone else you wouldn’t be affected by it due to you owning the skeleton key. If Mercer has succeeded he could’ve effectively had a monopoly on thieving THROUGH nocturnal. Stealing from the thieves guild: My guess to why he stole the gold and dipped out as quickly as possible was so that he could get out of the thieves guilds range. This obviously didn’t happen because the Dragonborn caught up with him but seeing how he’d been doing this for quite a while it’s entirely possible that he could’ve gotten away with it. Once he was out of range he could’ve hired hitmen to kill the already weakened thieves guild without putting himself at risk. From then on he could’ve spent the rest of his days or even eternity as an immortal thief living a life of luxury.
Kabbfix Wow Plus on the afterlife side of things, Nocturnal is business-orientated and she isn’t Molag Bal or Mehrunes Dagon. She wouldn’t torture and torment Mercer, she’d make him repay his debt, probably by guarding the Twilight Sepulchre for an insanely long time.
But him betraying the guild by killing the guild leader who was part of the Nightingales and stealing the key deeply affected everyone in the guild him included. He literally thought he could get away with it knowing some of the members don't fuck around, he ain't that sneaky leaving behind evidence unlike his conrad Kaliah who hid from them for 25 years and slowly started to get back at mercer without them figuring out it was her.
The fact that Brynjolf calls me a thief when all of my 7k septims was given me from all the grateful people I saved and I can't knock his teeth out hurts too much!
Well, Astrid and Mercer are done, only Savos Aren and Kodlak Whitemane left... Well, and maybe Viarmo. What? He's made vid about the leaders of DarkBrotherhood and Thieves'Guild, it won't be fair if he didn't make one each for CollegeOfWinterhold and TheCompanions (and maybe Bards'College too) LOL
Am I the only one who thinks that Savos should have been the antagonist of the college plot line ? It would have been a *good* subversion of our expectations by also being predictable if you looked at the right elements (like his reaction to you saying that something strange happened in Saarthal and his first reaction is thinking that students died again and that he will have to hide the proof or something, all very calmly). Honestly, it would have been better had he been the one to go mad with the power of the eye, on top of better building the character it would have made Ancano and the Thalmor less one dimensional by being actually here to observe and monitor things because the Thalmor doesn't trust human with magic as they will probably do stupid things with it (it is to me the most logical reason why he was sent there knowing the past of the Thalmor, I think that they have grown very patronising now that they have come out of their isolationism)...... I won't go too much into this but log story short : Savos should have been the villain, the questline and everyone involved would have been better off
This gives Nocturnal your soul...although: I get the meta theory of each guild being a different life option lol: by the end...the DB's soul is promised out...to a COUPLE of Daedric Prince's lol. They'll have to fight over it.
This is exactly what happened when I bet my soul at Uno a couple of times. I lost each time, and now the guys who won gotta fight over my soul after I die.

@@peryite9979 Sotha-Sil had the ability to create, whereas the Daedra are bound by the laws of Mundus when they refused to give up their power for the mortal realms creation. The Daedra cannot create, they can only cause chaos and change. Sotha-Sil CAN create AND cause chaos AND kept his physical form, unlike the divines. It's a catch-all. But even further than that, it is postulated that Sotha-Sil ascended beyond the realms of the gods. And perhaps Talos ascended even further than he. Talos is the same, he created the verdant grasslands of Cyrodil, so he too can create, and he too can cause chaos, and he too kept his physical form. An argument could be made that Talos is closer to the primordial forces that created the divines than he is a divine.

Brynolf actually approaches you with different dialogue depending on how much gold you have. If you don't have a significant amount of gold, he instead comes to you purposing more means for you to obtain gold. Gesturing at your near empty wallet.
Remember that he had the Skeleton key. The longer the user carries it, the more strange powers it unlocks withing him. We can verify this is the final battle against Frey. He may have outwitted Nocturnal indefinitely or even surpassed her power at some point.
Nocturnal could just shut that effect of the Key off or she could just wait till key jumps to another Wielder leaving Mercer Frey powerless and just a reminder achieving CHIM makes you immortal so that's definitely not the case
Why are the Thieves Guild surprised when they find their vault empty? I thought they had fallen on hard times and were basically broke. They shouldn't even had wealth if that was the case!
I find it funny i basically "returned the Thieves Guild to its former glory" without even finishing the guild questline. Heck, by the time i completed all the special city jobs, I still had to tail that lizard in the docks.
I mean...in fairness, giving that key back was like the very last thing I did in this game before starting a new save and Nocturnal doesn't seem TOO bothered.
It has to be a special mosquito, it has to be an exceptional human. Mercer is.. a somewhat talented thief. Daedric artifacts sooner or later come back to their Daedra on their own. Even Daedra prefer not to engage other Daedra in their own realms.
I can confirm that Brynjolf will approach the player even if you haven't stolen any gold. The way Brynjolf recruits people is like how a person you haven't seen in a long time suddenly tries to recruit you in a pyramid scheme.
My headcannon? He had the cowl of the grey fox. He has a bust of the grey fox in his house, so he's clearly familiar with the item. It would allow him to steal the money and the jewels, and then disappear forever.

That’s the thing Avarti. He DID build a lavish lifestyle. And that’s what got his predecessor, Gaius, suspicious of him to begin with.

Also the Grey Fox who stole from Nocturnal is the founder of the Cyrodiil thieves guild. Every other thieves guild by the time of Marrowind onwards is completely independent from each other.
Ah Marrowind now that was a good game.

Honestly, you need to do a video on the Grey Fox as a companion to this video, showing what an intelligent Thieves Guild leader does.

Jason .C True but my point was that the thieves guild had really lost its touch and Mercer played on that fact.
Yeah the nightingale and nocturnal would be a problem but Nocturnal was really relying on the nightingale which was down to its last member getting to recruiting both you and Byrnolf (who was really reluctant on the fact)
Karliah was not willing to cross blades with Mercer which implies Mercer was a far superior swordsman.

Personally I actually liked Mercer frey. So I’m going to play the devils advocate and disagree with you that he’s an idiot.
Nocturnal and the skeleton key:
Nocturnals skeleton keys has many allegedly mystical powers in the lore.
Stealing from the thieves guild:
My guess to why he stole the gold and dipped out as quickly as possible was so that he could get out of the thieves guilds range.
Him using the skeleton key the way he did is like using Volendrung as a door knocker.
I mean, he didn't hire even a few mercenaries to kill THE FREAKING DRAGONBORN. It's not exactly a secret, every guard in Tamriel knows about you!
Probably because he realizes it was kinda pointless to do so.
I won't go too much into this but log story short : Savos should have been the villain, the questline and everyone involved would have been better off
Not to mention Isran, Haarkon, etc
@@sephikong8323 I would have loved that. Anything to make Ancano less just a generic bad guy who does bad things because he's evil.

What about why you shouldn't join either?
@@madhouse2594 Strange reply to come from you General... you'd best hope the Emperor doesn't hear word of this
@@audileyeti4478 Don't tell the emperor, understand soldier?
@@madhouse2594 How about you withdraw all imperial forces from the provence of Skyrim a proclaim it to be an independent nation here on and we call it a deal ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Honestly i like thieves guild a lot. It has shit ton of mildly interesting NPCs in it not to mention their playstyle is seriously interesting. I always liked sneaky playstyles. They also have an established story for themselves. Also brynjolf is a bro.
Pft... An idiot?
Step one: Get rich ripping off a god
Step two: become an immortal vampire.
😏
Step three: Become Molag Baal's bitch.
If Mercer returned the key or even planned to do so nocturnal probably would have applauded him, like Mercer said she could care less about the guild or the nightingales, she only cares that her key was stolen.
Had whiplash when i saw Brynjolf had this k-popstar, host, model haircut. Guess all that thieving money went to his stylist
*demigod that kills Alduin, Ulfric Stormcloak, and assassinates the Emperor*
Random guy in Thieves Guild: “So…you’re Brynjolf’s new protige, huh? You don’t look like much to me”
Forget the thieves guild finding out, Mercer's real worry would be the IRS.
Pretty much everybody who almost killed the dragonborn is an idiot because they’re just gonna die from a dragon right after
Dragonborn: You think you can just steal from us and walk away?
Mercer: Yeah.
Dragonborn: so you have chosen death
"Your end is neeeeeeeear!!!"
The only best thing about Mercer Frey.
Karliah was quoted saying that the key can unlock untapped potential in one's self given enough time with the key, so I wonder if he thought he could potentially use it to make himself imortal.
I loved the irony of the guild being pissed that mercer stole everything out of their vault. I despise thieves in real life, and pretty much forced myself through the guild quest line for the achievements
During the quest with him as a guest, make sure to spam "Marked for death" on him for an easy kill at the end
I love the thieves guild because the NPC's in there are the nicest in the entire game. All of them treat you with decency and respect.
Brynjolf's opening speech is right on the money if you're the Arch-Mage of Winterhold though
"Not many people are stupid enough to betray a Daedric Prince."
Mannimarco: *exists*
