You were 13k subs at time of this video...you are now approaching 100k subs. Bravo! Congrats! I know absolutely nothing about lumber or milling but find myself watching because this is way better than all the junk on TV
November 2018, as you say, 13k subs. Your post was at almost 100,000. I just watched, and on 14 December 2021, there are 271k subs, and this video has 14 Million views in 3 years and a month. Wow.
I just recently branched out into sawmill videos and found your channel. Great presentation. It's cool to watch older videos and seeing you so happy at having 14K subscribers. Now 4 years later it's 344K and this video has 14M views. You deserve this good fortune.
When I got passed 60 years of age I discovered it was a whole lot easier on me to watch others do the hard work. That's why I like watching ya run the mill. LOL. Just teasing.
I've watched a few different channels since stumbling on this subject and I think what I like about you is that you don't have the top of the line equipment. You just have the basics, which allows you to be proud of "doing it yourself," I mean how can you be proud when some machine does all the work for you like mechanically rotating the log for you, moves itself down the log etc. I'd rather be able to say, "I did it" Kudos. 👍👍👍👍👍 PS I love the outtakes.
Definitely explains why this wood is used in all the trim for older homes. When we look for houses to live in we specifically seek gumwood out. It’s beauty can’t be matched. Drives me nuts when people paint over it.
Even though this is an older video, I still love it. You do such a good job with explaining what you are doing and why. Love your videos, keep them coming!
You know, I hadn’t watched until the end until just now. No wonder my channel blew up! 1.5 million views??? That’s amazing! I’ll be able to tell folks “I knew him way back in the day!”😁 thank you for the shout out! And awesome job on the outtake edit. Perfect!

Lots of opinions on this species. Experience helps: Sweet Gum is a WONDERFUL Wood, and HAS been used, and IS being used to make all kinds of beautiful and functional things. Yeah, there are defects sometimes. Same with Firewood use; LOTS of Heat. - look it up. Just because some don't like it isn't much reason to call it "trash". Nice Sawing, nice video, and thanks for sharing it.

Thanks again for an awesome video! There are lots of different species I'll never get a chance to saw because they just don't grow here, so thanks for letting us have a look at what we might not ever see otherwise.
I literally jumped in my seat when I saw that poison ivy! I react badly to it and where I live it's everywhere, so I've grown to spot it quickly. Nice work on the log. Something new every time...
I watched the other sweetgum video you mentioned here, and I'm working on getting all the logs from a fallen sweetgum in my neighbor's yard. Thanks for sharing these videos. I really enjoy the channel.
@@sparke7638 that tree was definitely already dead lol. ivy running up and down it, ants in the rotten bark, no actual tree limbs or leaves, dry wood etc etc. if you wanna hug this tree, don't come cryin that you need some damn lidocaine afterward XD
That is beautiful wood. Since this for a project at your home, how about doing a video on finishing the planks? The wood is beautiful in rough cut form. I'd really like to see the planks in finished form. And as always, keep up the good work.
Sweetgum is a pretty wood when sawed, but both it and Elm are notorious for twisting up very badly during the drying out process. Strip it out real close and put lots of weights on top to help hold it flat. We used concrete blocks and plenty of them. Great video!
Wow Thank you so much for the shout out, really appreciate it! What a surprise at the end of a great video. Like the out takes too, we should put more of them on, the good Lord knows I have many of them! Thanks again for being a great American. Tim
Great video and interesting content. I built a band sawmill years ago, and used trailer wheels for the pulleys. I got a lot of enjoyment out of running it. This brought back memories. Good luck with your channel's success!
Sweet. Gum has less graining but nice and is like hickory wood and Australia cypress with beautiful heart ❤️ Thank you god bless you sir. Build a dry storage building on a show
I think that the first blade was only for separate the bark from the tree and it's less sharp or less accurate. But the second, stronger is used for harder, inner wood.

Great fireproofing. SG won't hardly burn. Not much to build structurally with though. Very weak if it has to bear weight but it sure made beautiful lumber!!!
I saw someone use a pressure washer on a log before sawing it to remove rocks and dirt. That seemed a good way to preserve the sharpness of the blade. I think that pattern on that gum is beautiful!
Great camera work. Excellent editing, too. When I saw those vines in the beginning, I immediately thought of poison ivy. I get it easily. Terrible stuff.
I have 3 of those nasty trees I would happily give you.Used to be 6, but two were taken out by the power company when they dropped limbs on the power lines...& one was completely destroyed (exploded) by lightening last month. The gumballs they drop are a mess & their roots have destroyed my paved driveway.
