- Nhl news today - Pretty sizeable Edmonton oilers news today and Nhl trades have been aplenty lately and the jake guentzel tampa bay lightning trade carolina hurricanes leaves plenty of questions surrounding steven stamkos free agency , julien brisebois and more. The edmonton oilers jack campbell buyout opens opportunities for nhl free agency 2024 for jeff jackson and the group formerly helmed at gm by ken holland. Connor mcdavid leon draisaitl stanley cup final window is open so it'll be interesting to see what they use the cap space on. That's a breath of fresh air for Edmonton, clearing up extra weight. And it's a huge plus to secure Calvin Pickard, who is a loved character and one of the heroes of the season. That said, Campbell is indeed an awesome guy and has shown promise in net. I'm sure everybody is rooting for him to find a spot and excel there.
They will need every extra cap space they can get for the upcoming season. I feel sorry for Soup but this had to be done, also i think he would like to move on as well.
@@Chris-qo4rt I hope he joins a team and then pulls a revenge arc, and beats the Oilers in the playoffs next year. I would call that poetic justice. He showed promise in Toronto, but he left in soft goals and the offense mysteriously vanish. We don't see the offense vanish when Stuart Skinner is in net. Seriously, the Oilers put up so many points in the playoffs like it's in the 80's. Skinner probably has the best goal support in the playoffs and seeing some monstrous blowouts in the 2024 finals. Imagine if Skinner played in the 2003 Mighty Ducks team that rarely scores. Giguere had to turn god mode during the 2003 run and most of their wins were one-goal differentials. There are goalies that are stuck with low offensive output and poor defense. Soup is pretty unlucky at the time he joined the Oilers.

maybe as an ECHL goalie, but his pro career is cooked. He lost the starting job in the AHL too. Love the guy, great person, but not an NHL goalie
@@popeluigi he's had a good career still. Played in LA, few in Toronto and sadly didnt end well in EDM but mans got paid and hes living his best life now

I am NOT an Edmonton fan, but you have got to LOVE the moves they have made so far in the off season. Solid, solid moves by them with the guys they picked up and the cap space they have freed up. You've got to think that they are the Cup favorites heading into the next season, especially with the heartbreak they suffered a few days ago. Those guys are going to be HUNGRY!

Kinda feel bad for Soup. We had terrible defense during his tenure as an oilers...but when we started getting good D we didnt even try
Never thought of it that way. He didn't steal any games, and let some stinkers in. Ya, defense was bad, but 50' uncontested shots must be saved.
I thought he was kinda overpaid, but $5m? For a 1A/1B goalie? Not bad.
It's really weird that Jack Campbell doesn't seem to have a lot of goal support, but Stuart Skinner got a lot of goal support and the defense blocking shots for him, which explains that his save percentage is not as high as other top goalies. Imagine if Jack Campbell is in the 2000's NJ Devils, he would be a stud there as evidence from Scott Clemmensen's amazing 2008-2009 season. Another weird part is that Campbell faced many shots as well. The Toronto blue maples team were not known for defense, but Campbell played the best he can there and the offense strangely sputtered. If he in the 2007 Anaheim Ducks squad that won the cup, then he would have won the cup like what Giguere did, but with less impressive stats.
Now Edmonton just need to figure something out with that nurse contract
If I were Campbell, I would retire. He's a multi-millionaire at 32. Enjoy life.
Or go play for a team in a gorgeous town In Switzerland or something. Possibilities are endless
It's not easy to quit something you love, especially something you've dedicated your entire life to.
Thank God you aren't his agent lol. He has another window here to prove himself, change the narrative around his play, get an even bigger payday beyond what he's already gotten, and continue doing the thing he loves and has dedicated every day of his life to mastering since he was a child.

Jeff Jackson had no choice but to buy out Campbell as the window closes after today. Not sure about the comment on how he's 'acting' like a GM, he will continue to do so until he finds one. BTW- you may have missed it but at the Draft he said whoever he hires he will be working closely with - that means he'll be a quasi-GM anyway regardless of who is hired (compared to NIchols who just sat back and collected a paycheck and maybe concentrated on the off ice stuff but day to day operations on the club personal wise Nicks did nothing)
These players have it all their way, even if they're not good enough. They get bought out by a team and then are able to sign somwhere else. The minute they sign that should free the cap space on the original team. You can't have it both ways.

Just remember that it was the Oilers fan who demanded Campbell play here to replace the far batter Koskinen. Despite the fact that Campbell had worse numbers on a team (leaf's) with better D then the Oilers at that time.
It feels like Tampa has the chance to change their trajectory but Guentzel really doesn’t do that for me
Guentzel is a great player for sure but Tampa needs depth, they already have the top end talent to win (a core 4 of Hedman, Kuch, Vasi and Point is great)… The team doesn’t have the supporting pieces to be anything more than a good team but unserious contender
I’d rather get a cheaper sniper to allow the rest of the roster to get filled out (someone like Tyler Toffoli)
They should keep trying to get Marsseasault back. MSL 2.0 I like Guentzel I don't see the fit with Tampa.

Sure Toffoli has had some rougher years in his career for sure and Marchessault is coming off a great year but Toffoli has basically been a 30 goal scorer since 2019-20 counting the years he was on pace for it while Marchessault has been the same with a few outliers in terms of goals and points (This year’s 42 goals and his 75 points in 17-18 for example)
I’d rather have Marchessault neutral but I think it’s more than possible that March gets around 8 while Toffoli gets around 5 or 6 with the cap going up… Idk if March is that much better tbh
The only thing that $3.9M really does is offset the bonuses for Connor Brown and Corey Perry

Say it straight.Holland was not "out" as Oilers GM. It was his last year before most likely retiring. The guy has been an executive for a long long time. He did an excellent job with the Edmonton Oilers. Using words like out as a GM is extremely misleading as to the body of work that he did.

I couldn`t agree more. Cale Makar of the Avalanche makes half Nurse`s salary and is ten times the defenseman Nurse pretends to be. Holland`s worse signing ever. Way worse than the Campbell deal.

@joshmoxey. The Campbell buyout didn't clear out enough to afford Stamkos. Plus, he's going to want some term, and the Oilers need to make sure they have enough room for the massive increase in the Draisaitl and Bouchard extensions. Right now Leon makes 8.5 and Bouch makes 3.9. Draisaitl will get 14+ and Bouchard will probably be 9.5-10. Thats 11 mil right there. Going to need to get rid of Nurse's 9+ million

@@tmorin008 I highly doubt Draisaitl takes less than 14 unless it's like a 2-3 year deal. Draisaitl has been on a massive discount for the last 5 seasons. He wants to get paid. Listen to his end of season presser. He basically said, without saying it outright "show me the money." As far as Stamkos goes, 3 million in a no tax state was considered an insulting offer according to him. He's looking for something closer to 6 per.

Tampa can sign for 8 instead of 7 by having his rights now. Thats what the 3rd round pick is for, not the extra day of negotiations.
no they can't. you can only do 8 years if that player was on your roster at the trade deadline. the only way Tampa could get 8 years is if CAR did a sign and trade (CAR gives him 8 years, then immediately trades him). sign and trades aren't very common, but it can be a way to get a bit extra for the team trading away the player.

Because he turned down the Pens offer of 8 years X 8.5 M per. His team was asking for 10.5 M + per year. Carolina's initial offer was 8 X 9 +M, which was turned down, so Carolina said "good luck with free agency". Tampa's offer of the 3rd round pick gave Carolina an out, without losing Jake for nothing.
