  • James O'Brien questions the intangible consequences of the Israel versus Iran conflict as Israel reportedly launches retaliatory strikes.
Iran's air defences were triggered early on Friday in response to reports of explosions near the city of Isfahan, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.
Explosions were heard just after 5am local time in the central province of Isfahan, Iranian state media has said.
Air defence intercepted three drones in the region, with no major damage sustained to buildings or facilities according to reports.
Tensions between the two states were raised following Israel’s air strike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus on April 1 - a strike that killed 13 people, including two top Iranian generals.
In response, Iran fired around 300 miles and drones at Israel on Saturday, the majority of which were shot down by Israeli air defences.
A senior Iranian official has now said the country has no immediate plan for retaliation against Israel.
There has been no confirmation of the strike from Israel following reports of the explosions.

It has always done so, going back decades, and their rationale was it had to happen through a negotiated peace process, but of course, that only ever applied to the Palestinians. The US-pushed partition plan of 47 was supposed to create two states and an interstitial zone, albeit it gave most of the land to the Jewish minority, the bulk of whom were recent immigrants. It was a terrible plan on multiple levels, but it involved a two-state solution.
Since then the two-state solution has been purely rhetorical. The US has continued to support Israel no matter what it does with only minor scolding now and again.

Bro, I grew up in Iran and there are so many Jews living here. Iran didn't expel them like many European countries. They are our country men and every bit iranian as we are. To assume Iran has problem with every Jew and vise versa is just a western/zionist agenda which has been pushed by the media. it was Probably some mosad agents or infiltrator from iraq which they paid off.

Neither to the Iranians want a conflict - BUT Netanyahu DOES. The USA has given him a Green Flag to ATTACK RAFAH in exchange for not widening the war - EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTED. To be honest that trivialises it. Israel is the only nuclear state in the region, there is no symmetry, no mutually assured destruction. It has been trying to get the US involved in war against Iran for years. It recently struck an Iranian consulate in contravention of international law. People did die in that first attack. So no, cute names for it are not especially appropriate.
Iran basically had to walk a fine line here. It's goal was to be able to say A) We've shown our capabilities (even if no real damage was done), B) We won't tolerate attacks on us, C) We don't want escalation with a nuclear power that genuinely might decide to use them with no real fear of consequences.
Israel's retaliation against the retaliation was more in the emotional category, but Iran basically had no choice. Otherwise it would be sending the signal that when Israel attacks it, as Israel has done before this, it would just do nothing and let it happen.
I would certainly ask whether your attitude if you were in Iran's place would be any different. There are after all two alternatives. You could do nothing after a number of your people were killed on your own de jure soil, or you could try to deal real damage and risk escalation. Which path would you choose?

Iran also bled everyone financially because it cost Israel and her allies over a billion dollars to stop most of the missiles launched which only cost Iran 10’s of millions dollars in comparison. Iran notified the US in advance of launching missiles so that they could start the expensive task of stopping the missiles which were only launched to attack military airbases as opposed to Israel attacking civilian locations.
