It’s the first I’ve really seen of this kid, the other being a cover of “You Really Got Me” which was impressive. I think both Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter would be immensely impressed with this interpretation by all three musicians. And Mancuso’s voicing of the Black Market chorus and bridge are beautiful, edgy and inventive. Bravo to all three musicians.

Matteo is a Phenomenon ~ and I mean that in the kindest way ~ I am gobsmacked by his amazing skill on the fretboard, and his right-hand fingers work a lot harder and faster than anyone could with a pick. I look at my guitar with renewed respect now. You are Gifted, young Sicilian ! 🎸
Matteo, simply a superior mind. Everything starts from the brain. Technique, musical creative ideas, phrasing, musicality and more are direct consequences. First of all, he has an incredible head, that's what I think. In every musical genre his performance is the top.

Very interesting take on a classic *Zawinul* composition. This instrumentation also gives some insight into the *Weather Report* sound had *John McLaughin* accepted the original group's invitation to become its guitarist. All in all, a very compelling performance.
As much as I like and respect McLaughlin (and I did not know he had been a possible choice for Weather Report) I have often felt like his guitar musings were too busy and overly complicated/esoteric (at times). Showcasing guitar virtuosity and even dissonance(? )however brilliant musically it might be to the attuned ears of more sophisticated musicians, over harmonious integration within a composition. Too much muscle flexing. I don't hear that really with this player (Mancuso) , he still shows a respect and homage to the piece it seems to me, where McLaughlin would likely do something much more tangential and mess around with the time signatures and phrasing to the point a novice listener like myself either loses the thread, or just loses interest because the feeling/vibe has been lost.
@@nicolasrossi5978 That's one perspective. Another is there's a possibility that *Zawinul* would've kept *McLaughlin* under some control regarding his solos (which could possibly be one of the reasons why he declined the invitation). As evidenced on "In a Silent Way" (Miles Davis), *Zawinul's* arrangements muted *McLaughlin* to the point that any competent guitarist could've been performing.
However, in retrospect, that could've been a good thing. Such control could've likely given *McLaughlin* even more freedom when performing live concerts. If you're also familiar with *Return to Forever,* you'll notice how creative *Al Di Meola* became during concerts and his solo albums. *McLaughlin's* playing wouldn't seem so esoteric had he also followed this formula.

As always, Matteo is simply phenomenal. This the 2nd best cover of the Weather Report classic after Shawn Lane's interpretation, which is beyond human understanding. Bravo, young man, you are an inspiration to us all.

Matteo, Stefano, Giuseppe, and the other two guys Matteo plays with are keeping the spirit of the 90's fusion alive, which was keeping the fusion of the 70's and 80's alive. :)
I like the trend of bands doing medleys of popular songs not written by the group playing it, like Khurangbin does so well, too.

Damn you guys are nasty! As a longtime guitar player honestly never thought of doing a guitar cover of Black Market. Works nicely and you all nailed the hell out of it though imo. Also nearly lost it when you were doodling around and started the SMB underground level.

@@Mrmoon1976 A mio parere MM è un talento mostruoso dalla tecnica strumentale innovativa che lo porterà lontano. Ma al momento, musicalmente parlando, è ancora molto immaturo, o meglio ha la maturità che si confà alla sua giovane età. Nel senso che i suoi progetti musicali sono ancora di basso profilo (e si consumano in giochini come rubare progressivamente il tempo alle ultime battute di Black Market che si può ascoltare qui). Questa potrebbe essere una risposta (anche se io non credo che tutto debba essere veicolato tramite Bollani). Ad ogni modo, piuttosto che fare il leader dei suoi trii con poche idee, dovrebbe lavorare ponendosi l'obbiettivo di fare delle collaborazioni prestigiose con grandi musicisti a cui prestare la sua tecnica e da cui prendere la cultura musicale necessaria per fare pian piano il salto di qualità come musicista (non come chitarrista: quello l'ha già fatto, ma come musicista). Se vuole uscire da TH-cam quella è la strada. Se no rimarrà per sempre in questa dimensione da chitarrista funambolico buono per i complimenti perlopiù del circuito dei rocchettari. Ad ogni modo, io credo che MM sappia bene tutto ciò e sono fiducioso.

Io in quasi 60 anni di cui 45 come appassionato di musica jazz, classica e rock non ho mai visto niente di simile. Uno che praticamente dal nulla inventa una tecnica rivoluzionaria che stupisce il mondo, con una musicalità e un gusto rari...osannato dai grandi, attenzione, altro che chitarrista da YT. Ha tanto tempo davanti a sé per promuovere progetti seri (alcuni già li ha in cantiere ed altri già realizzati). Impossibile che tanto talento vada sprecato, tranquillo. Uno come lui, serio, preparato, ha una testa notevole. Sa bene cosa fare, e ha già girato l'Europa per seminari e robe varie. Che poi il trio degli Snips non abbia idee, perdonami ma non mi sembra proprio. Arrangiamenti sontuosi, tecnica incredibile, interplay eccezionale, e già numerosi riconoscimenti internazionali e giudizi estremamente positivi da tutto il mondo. Se non ti basta...ci sarà dell'altro. Musica personale ed originale sarà certamente creata. La maturazione arriverà. La composizione sarà il prossimo passo, seguita da uno stile musicale riconoscibile e personale, il vero obiettivo di ogni artista

Lo stesso credo si possa dire per Bollani con Rava (raccontato in più interviste). Sono tutti esempi di quel che volevo dire. Perché o c'hai il genio di Jacob Collier (e allora 'sfondi' anche incidendo il disco d'esordio con i lavori che fai in cameretta da solo a vent'anni), oppure ti serve una personalità forte del livello dei top musicisti per fare il salto di qualità. Se lui continua a suonare coi suoi amichetti... Poi, come dicevo, ho fiducia anche io, credo che lui sia intelligente abbastanza per sapere quello che sto dicendo.
