My goodness, an entire week of reading for which I'm envious. Martyr is one that I keep hearing about, from an author who I keep meaning to read as well, so I appreciated hearing your take on it. In future, I've also got plans to read Natalia Ginzburg, but for now have to focus on the books on my shelves.
I must look out for Martyr when it is released over here. I read one Ginzburg a couple of years ago and was bowled over by it. You remind me must pick up another. It is years since I read Donna Leon. My mother in law always bought them and would lend them on to me. So enjoyable. Since she died I have forgotten to go back to them.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Martyr. Donna Leon is my favorite kind of palate cleansing author- one who writes a sense of place and culture, character and a little intrigue to stir it up.
Great to hear your thoughts on Wellness as I keep getting tempted seeing it in bookstores but I'm hesitant to get one until I know I'll have time since it's so long. I think I'll wait but you've got me so eager to read Martyr! It's out here in early March. Looking forward to it. Thanks!
Wellness is on my audio TBR. My best reads of February so far are Greta & Valdin ( especially on audio for the Māori/ New Zealand/Russian/ Spanish accents) Hello Beautiful 😍 The Bandit Queens ( audio again) Currently listening to Time Shelter 🍀👋☘️📖🇮🇪📚☕️📕
Well done, no more NetGalley and Goodreads! The California public library system sounds perfect and it’s without pressure to read and report back on books. And when your main goal is to catalogue your books, then imo Librarything is far superior. The social function of Goodreads? I fail to see it. Yes, Zola is beloved, adored!!
Hi Sarah, you always expand my reading options. I want to read both of those novella’s and maybe one day Zola. I’ve read a few Donna Leon books. I have some issues with the author. But mystery is my thing. I am cohosting March mystery madness next month. Have you read Rex Stout, the Nero, Wolf series? I read a few many years ago, but just heard that he might be a better writer than Agatha Christie and that got my attention to start reading more. Aloha friend.
Oh thank you! Knowing your love of Paris, you should try Zola. And knowing your love for Cora Sandel, I think you would also like Natalia Ginzburg. She a bit less atmospheric. Maybe more like the second in the Alberta series. I seem to remember dropping a Nero Wolf because of some sexism but can’t remember which one. I know the Donna Leon work gets more open as the times progressed, which is great or I would have had to dump it then, too. 😉
@@HardcoverHearts I'm looking for my first Natalia Ginzburg. Thank you for suggesting it. As for Donna Leon, I read some articles where she was unpleasant to people, which came out in some of her books. But then I learned she was born in New Jersey so I might give her another try 😀
@@MarilynMayaMendoza Oh I read one of her essay collections and she is wildly opinionated. But she has created an incredible character in Commissario Brunetti and the Venetian culture is ever present. There is some homophobia in the first one, written in the 80s but in the last one he even chided himself for such a narrow and old fashion mindset.
Thank you for bringing a new author to my attention! The Road to the City sounds wonderful ❤
That’s my pleasure!

Oh yes, I think you might really enjoy both Martyr and the works of Ginzburg. No hurry. They aren’t going anywhere! 😉

I suspect that Martyr will be a winner for you, Eric!
I so much want to read Martyr now! Thank you for the introduction to it💕
I didn’t even touch a tenth of what’s in that book.

I love an ensemble narration when there are dialects in a story!

I would be lost without LibraryThing when it comes to protecting me from buying books with different covers.
Really? I love Goodreads.
