Dude, I've got to say this is actually really helpful. You do all your resampling in one place, and I think that's got to do wonders for your workflow.
It's important to note, though, that most of the sounds you hear in "Saturated" and "Fuzz Disc" are sounds that are cut up before that happens after being resampled. The finalized bits that are arranged into the track are rarely all that long.
The primary use of resampling through Harmor is being able to take advantage of the unison settings. The "prism" knob, used sparingly, also helps. Tweak the "sharp" knob with either the prism or unison engaged. I, typically, start with just two unison voices with the pitch very low and the phase set at middle. Adding some distortion in the FX section helps as well. I have to imagine Ableton has some plugin or process for capturing live audio. Use that to capture and import into Harmor.
Make sure you have "on play" selected next to the recording button. This way, when you have recording enabled in Edison, it will start recording when you play the track, and stop recording when you stop playing the track. The loop markers will show up when the time marker in the playlist loops back, or when the pattern loops if you're in pattern mode.
Harmor has two filters in it that can be set to various routing options. As well as having all the standard filter type options it also gives you the ability to design your own filter shape.
I'm recoding the audio separately. You can see in the beginning in the Edison where it's recording my voice. I record the video with FRAPS and my audio in the master Edison, and then sync it up afterwards in Adobe Premier Pro.
Very rarely do I do the same FX settings more than once. It can work sometimes, but usually not. The automation and jazz were all done before the resampling into Harmor. Sometimes I do automate settings in Harmor because the movement does do different things. But I often find that I don't have to.
Sometimes that works. I have done that before with previous resampling techniques (that didn't work out nearly as well) and it seemed to yield the best possible results. I haven't tried that with the Harmor stuff yet.
They FX are different every time. Sometimes you can get a favorable result with just the same FX more than once, but I tend not to. Also note that I used the Sytrus sound like that in the beginning to show that it's possible to get something cool out of something relatively lame to start. My starting samples are usually way closer to awesome. I may do a second tutorial about specific things pretty soon.
Seamless...If you could do a specific tutorial on just ONE of those bass sounds you did in the intro song (one that really showcases the potential), I'm sure I speak for EVERYONE when we say we'd be forever grateful. I've been working on this for the last couple days since I came across your TUT and I just can't seem to get too close. Thanks again for the replies. Your sounds are LEGIT!
Specifically? No idea :] Here are some things to try/keep in mind: Starting out with a sound that already sounds good to you will make the process quicker. Keeping the "pitch" fader on the unison pretty low is recommended since the effects will stack each time. Keeping the unison settings different each time is also recommended. Foll around with the "sharpness" knob in the IMG section. Be careful how many times you stack distortion. Use the "prism" knob very, very lightly.
Well, once you import the audio and bounce it into a new file it's a whole new file, unrelated to the previous recording. I was saying, basically, that it helps to try and get the sound as far along towards your ideal final sound before bringing it into harmor. It makes the process easier. Of course, at the time of making this video the process was still relatively new to me. In How To Bass 7 and 9 (in my channel) I start with relatively simple sounds and get better results than in this video.
I'd suggest taking this video to the ableton forums and asking someone more experienced with the software for the best practices. But Edison is also available for purchase as a VST from Image Line :]
This has to do with what the pitch setting in the Unison does. Imagine two waveforms, one is being played slower or faster, creating the pitch difference. If you see these two waves together you'd notice that one is moving ahead of the other. Eventually, they'll get to a point where there will be some phase cancellation, causing a drop in volume or "thickness". One way to counteract this is to reverse your sample every so often to try and balance the effect.
I have absolutely no experience using Ableton at all. I can tell you that Image Line, developers of FL Studio, sells most of their plugins in VST format for usage in other DAWs. Harmor included. At the time of making this video, my primary method for generating bass was to use Massive first, and then run it through Harmor. As far as things to run stuff through, Harmor is the only plugin I am aware of that can do this as well as it does.
even for 8 years ago, this sound is what my friends use all the time except they resample and use the harms in such a way that it makes a metallic tone and also uses the pitch articulator to create prismatic textures
This would be phase cancellation due to the pitch unison. A way to avoid this is to reverse your sample before resampling so that the effect is weighted differently in time. This effect is why I generally don't use a resampled part that's very long. If there's a big part that I want all through a specific chain, I do it bit by bit to ensure none of it is cancelled out by phasing.
The loop markers are present when the playlist or pattern loops. So, I'm guessing when you're recording the audio it isn't, itself, looping. In the video, I made the loop in the playlist and had it play from there. So when it reached the end of the loop, and looped around, it made the "song jump" markers. I'm not actually aware of any way to make edison NOT do that, so if yours isn't, I don't know whats up :]
If you are looking to resample a bass in Ableton with Harmor as a VST, play a single note on the sequencer using whatever bass you like from beginning to end. Then, highlight the entire note and solo the track if you have other tracks open and then export it with bit depth 24 and no dither. Now, open Harmor and go to IMG. Take the audio file you exported and drag and drop it. Now you have resampled it.
I have never used ableton, so I cannot comment on how it handles recording and what not. I suppose, at the very least, you could render out a sample, put the render in Harmor, and render out again. Harmor is also availalbe as a VSTi from Image Line's online store, so you can use it in other DAWs, including ableton.
I was trying to realize why my Sytrus doesn't sound sharp on the second bar start. It's where you set 4 fast cut off drops. And finally found the reason. The X/Y modulation set to smooth by default! removed smooth and it sounds sharp as yours.
Seamless, this may be pedantic of me, but I have heard from somewhere (I think it was a forum like gearslutz or something) that this is technically resynthesizing rather than resampling since you are putting it back into a synthesiser and not a sampler. I think putting the sample back into a sampler would technically be resampling it. I guess it doesn't really matter.
Excellent you gave that away really nice, sometimes i spend weeks doing this, noisia i heard spend month’s working on a sound, great work, but how do you record your voice, my sound card wont let me record audio and stream at the same time.
This is a relly great approach! Thank you very much for sharing! Guess, I gotta think about buying Harmor by now :D Cheers. btw: "Saturated" is a genuine banger!!! Wish you all the best
awesome thank you.. and so what your saying,,, is make a basic wobble and put it into harnor, mod a couple of things, then put the modded version back into harmor, mod more things then plug it BACK in... continuing the process until it sounds good? im looking to create a.. The Frederik, Noisia, Feed Me, and Koan. again. thank you
awesome.... i dont know if anyone has told you, that your a walking breathing genius... now.. i know you dont use ableton but.. without that tool to record a clip that you used.. to throw it back into harmor. how would you record it? just in an audio channel and then just throw that audio clip back into harmor? and what would the various parameters that you would change when resampling?
Nice stuff man. Just a quick question, what kinds of tools does harmor have in it to aid resampling (does it have notch filters and comb filters and all that goodness?) ?
so what im not getting is, do you do the same thing every time? do you just add the same fx, export, bring back in and add the same effects, and keep repeating it? or do you do different stuff each time? im assuming your also doing some kind of automation clips and controls with the bass in the intro and in your other 2 songs that rock btw!!!!
You know that FL Studio has a button up top that allows you to render whatever is highlighted in the playlist into a wav, right? Is it just quicker to record it and drag it into Harmor?
When you initally bounced the sample, you were talking about the sound being already perfect as you can get it and denoising, were you trying to say that once the resolution's gone you can't get it back? Just want to make sure I'm understanding your explanation.
Hey, I've experimented a while with this now and I've noticed almost all of the audio gets cancelled out on faster moving wobbles, for example I did sort of a saw-wave-shaped lfo on a detuned saw-wave (and non-detuned) wich was gradually speeding up and as soon as it started moving really fast it got cancelled out during the resampling processed. Any idea why this is? I've noticed it gets cancelled out mostly in the lower frequencies.
This may sound silly, but your original midi file...the automation that you have going on. is that just a filter cut off? I can never get my bass to have that much movement without chopping it into different channels which is annoying since by the end of a 4 bar loop i have like 8 bass channels.
I'm just made a sound using this technique for the first time and I noticed that when I did my first resample, the sound coming out of harmor was a bit quiet and my mix is turning out kinda quiet. Are there any ideas on how to make it sound fuller and louder. Also could you do a tutorial on the first sound sample you showed after the main sytrus part of the tutorial. you are awesome! keep it up :D
So when you get the result you do in the video, the first resample, we saw which FX you used. When you say you went through the process 6 times, did you just keep harmor with the same settings, and keep resampling...? Or did you change the settings/add different FX/take some away each time? (Really trying not to get the "just experiment" response :/ )...like did you every add flanger/chorus/choose not to add some distortion, etc.. It's all about that deep ripping effect.
okay this was a good tutorial but i feel you could have went a little more in depth. I really want to know what exactly you did to make the bass in your intro because thats such a huge difference and its definitely the kind of sound im aiming for but i just cant seem to do it.
Great tutorial :) Do you know any other VSTs where a sample can be re-synthesized additively? I'm asking, as I have mac and Harmor is only for windows. Do you think alchemy, kontakt, vertigo or morphine could do the job? Thanks indeed :)
One thing I never understood about resampling. Why not duplicate the Harmor six times in a row behind the Sytrus? Sure it's more resource heavy, BUT you'll get to keep your dynamics. Or am I misunderstanding something?
You basically made this lowfi bass a reese bass. Sound like u had a bit of phaseing going on. Did u do the same tweaking over and over to get the sound like that or no?? BTW thanks a lot . Big help
Hello Im trying to resample audio clips. i record the clip through edison. then drag it to harmor to re synthesis it. i get the sounds i want and can play them through the piano roll. however when i close the program, all of my resynthesised clips are gone and turn to beeps. do i have to save them through harmor once i resynthesis them? or whats going on. please help me.
Thanks for the video. I have a problem with Harmor and Ableton (not to forget Edison). I recorded a bass sample from Harmor using Edison and I tried dragging and dropping it into a new Harmor track and it didn't work. If anyone can tell me what to do (well I can record the audio without Edison) but what can I do to resampl
seems logical, but why would you need to make an audio clip? if you freeze the flatten the midi clip.. it turns into an audio clip... not necesarily on an audio channel, but its an audio clip? wouldnt it be the same?
Same question for me. I have Sytrus loaded to Default. Played out for the same duration and I created an automation clip for Modulation X on the Main screen. Waveform looks identical to yours but modulation x automation clip doesn't seem to be changing original sound.

oh i see, so just start here and then each time add something else and it should keep getting a little better each time??? either way i guess there is no formula and just try new things and see what works!!!! thanks for the video, and im sorry i left like 5 comments on your other videos too lol!!! plus that intro bass was super cool!!!!!
This doesn't work for me, when I drag the sound into a hamor and change the advanced settings I just get a high pitched screech. Anyone know how to fix this?
sweeet, alright man, thank you so much for getting back quickly and thoroly and being nice haaha, and for most of all. answering my question. ive been searching for the answer for atleast a year lol. follow me on soundcloud or what have you, peace! ReduxOfficial :D
I tried reversing it each time I resampled it, didn't really help at all... maybe I'll just have to do it bit by bit. Takes such a long time though :( Also, thanks for replying!

It does take forever doesn't it? No problem :] Happy resampling.

agreeing with @theofficial Halloween...it does sound weird but if you can actually MASTER the effect you can make cool sounds

cool ! thanks for the tutorial , i think feed me use this technic too cause it sounds similiar as him

I resampled the final result about 6 times like you said, but i just got a really gross, wet, empty-sounding bass. What do you think i did wrong?
So when you get the result you do in the video, the first resample, we saw which FX you used. When you say you went through the process 6 times, did you just keep harmor with the same settings, and keep resampling...?
Or did you change the settings/add different FX/take some away each time? (Really trying not to get the "just experiment" response :/ )...like did you every add flanger/chorus/choose not to add some distortion, etc..
It's all about that deep ripping effect.

very awesome dude. i'm going to have some fun with this >:D. sweet track btw
Big help
can u try recreate in massive or ableton live plugin ? would love to get my hands on those.
Is there any preset already available for the basic saw bass? Or i have to create it?
Hey seamless i got a question, when i am resampling my noise seems to get quieter and quieter, why is this?
nice tut dude. everything moderation is the key ?
First off, I've got to ask, how long have you been working in FL Studio? I would love to message you sometime and ask you a few questions.
Im a bit late to the party but did you do any follow up video? Id really like to see a vid on the tune u played at the start, its amazing
Hey man, is there a suitable resynthesis software for us OSX users? Danke
Thanks for the video. I have a problem with Harmor and Ableton (not to forget Edison). are you using a sine or square for the basic bass?
I'm kinda new to the whole process, like I have no idea how to get the starting sound in Sytrus. Can someone explain?
I like the woofish sound in that track... been trying to resample something like it and didn't come close lol
Is there any tutorial on the Sytrus preset? I'd love to learn this technique. But i don't know how to do the sytrus stuff C:
seems logical, but why would you need to make an audio clip? if you freeze the flatten the midi clip.. it turns into an audio clip... not necesarily on an audio channel, but its an audio clip? wouldnt it be the same?
Damn, image line is a hero hahaha, well thank you so much man... now my question is... how do you think this would sound in a type of houseO.o
So cool!
what is re sampling? if i wanted to re sample a bass from someone else song so i can make a remix is that possible?:)
ur a wild man... great video
Same question for me. I have Sytrus loaded to Default. Played out for the same duration and I created an automation clip for Modulation X on the Main screen. Waveform looks identical to yours but modulation x automation clip doesn't seem to be changing original sound.
Use a Sine wave or a Square! works best with them

Wishing you luck, space captain!
Here's hoping your journey has been fruitful.
@@Xenowave Not at all, I gave up but Im still using FL from time to time creating noise
@@MurphyMittens Glad to hear you're still on FL, it's just a fun pastime regardless 💃💃
@@Xenowave Its bittersweet knowing I wrote that 6 years ago, but I like you
every time i resample anything the audio comes out all muddy is there a way to fix that ?
oh i see, so just start here and then each time add something else and it should keep getting a little better each time??? either way i guess there is no formula and just try new things and see what works!!!!
thanks for the video, and im sorry i left like 5 comments on your other videos too lol!!!
plus that intro bass was super cool!!!!!
This doesn't work for me, when I drag the sound into a hamor and change the advanced settings I just get a high pitched screech. Anyone know how to fix this?

Something not explained guys.
Put your FM on a open track (click it and assign to open right[right click])
In mixed put edison on FM track
In a sea of shit tutorials, you are our savior.
Alright, so I went to record my bass on edison and clicked record on play, but nothing was recorded. Any suggestions?

Every time I record with Edison and send it to the playlist, the recording sounds higher in pitch. What's going on?
I tried reversing it each time I resampled it, didn't really help at all... maybe I'll just have to do it bit by bit. Takes such a long time though :( Also, thanks for replying!
