Morning routines have honestly caused me depression. It’s been within the last 6 months that I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that they aren’t real - and I’m not a failure just bc I can’t achieve them.

Airfare is crazy. I’m an executive assistant and I used to book first class international flights for a previous manager. One time I was working with the travel agent to get the fare down and we ended up at $16k. I was so pleased, but then burst out laughing when it occurred to me that I paid less than that for my car. 😂

YES! The two new trends I want to see crash and burn is gender reveal parties and the cake face smash bullshit. Engaging. And no worries Angie, I have 3 kids, we can sit back and judge together.

You just reminded me of something that made me laugh out loud 😂 when I was pregnant and people would ask what “it” was I would make this really offended look and say “it’s a baby! What do expect? A dog???” 😂😂😂 someone asked me after he was born “how does he sleep?” I said “with his eyes closed “😂😂😂

This is such an important conversation to have, thank you! I wish more creators would be honest about it. Sure, show the cool things, but make it clear, you only get to do that because of your job. If you had a normal 9-5 day job, life would look different! Also, creators who are honest, shouldn't feel guilty for the special perks that do come with their job.

  • @anadanaya
    @anadanaya 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +57

Hi Angelica, you are so right, none of these things are normal! Most importantly, they can be distracting from the real important things in life. Sometimes I think the moral values and life criteria is being subverted and becoming more shallow.
Please keep bringing discussion topics like this to your channel. I follow your videos and channel (even me being a boring neutral person) but your artistry impresses me and I love to see you create all your looks. Thank you Angelica!

I've been thinking a lot lately about what is "normal" and trendy, and I think depends a lot on what and whio you surround yourself with. I saw Kelly Gooch's video on trends, and thought how the people I usually hang out with would never dress like that or do their makeup like that. Then I went to a wool festival, where people wore homemade crocheted skirts, hand embroidered vests, and knit sweaters while selling the yarn they got from their sheep and alpacas. What's normal and trendy in that space is not normal or trendy outside of it. This past weekend I went to a metal concert. The fashion there, with heavy black makeup, fishnets and spikes, a dash of fake blood, is its own sort of normal. And in all of these spaces, people feel like they need to compete and compare themselves with their peers. So this is bigger than stacked bracelets or designer bags. It's a humanity wide thing where we want to know where we rank. I don't think there's a better solution than to be mindful and love yourself for exactly who you are right now.

  • @meganbailey1080

I think this is one of the best topics/conversations to date. I worry about the younger generations (I'm 50) that think they need to be doing or achieving the things they see on social media.

    • @flowerchild2657
      @flowerchild2657 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

We're the same generation and I worry too. A huge difference was that before, all the photogenic stuff was in glossy magazines or/and TV ads, we knew the models or actors were promoting a product, a movie, a role and that they weren't like us. But with the "explosion" of social media reality and fiction are blurred, the product is the person. The term "my brand" is applied to an individual, it has a monetary value. The whole point is to make people believe that their public persona and their private one is the same. Deep down the basic thing didn't change: a good image sells. Standards of beauty might change, evolve but it has always been and will always be about "how things LOOK" instead of "how things ARE" It's all about appearances. The truth has become irrelevant. That's what's scary.

Thank you for your thoughts and opinions on these things! They are becoming all too normal, and most of us don't live in that tax bracket. I find myself falling victim sometimes to social media brain warp...thinking I need more than I have. If I don't see it, I don't need it. But if I do see it, I feel like I NEED it. Ugh, it's horrible. I started watching TH-cam for makeup tutorials. Now it's all about hauls and what's new coming out. Which I do love! But I miss creating looks, not sales. I appreciate your content. I love get ready with me stuff and indie brand support and much more I've come across. Thank you so much for reminding me that I don't, in fact, need it all. Emily Noel does almost daily a morning routine. She's been a broadcast professional and has a big family and it's normal to see her videos with darkness in the background or a kid waking up and coming to say good morning. Occasionally she shows her routine, but she seems like she has a tight program to make the most of her days. Personally I am a night owl, so I am not a morning person, but she certainly got it from years of being up well before dawn.

Angie, this is a great topic of discussion! I have a 17 year old sister and I’m going to have Jewels watch this! She thinks everything on IG and TikTok is real and she wants everything they have and it’s so unrealistic! I’ve watched so many videos of “Spend the morning with me or spend the day with me” and they get out of bed looking so refreshed, the perfect outfit, the perfect lighting, their fridge when they go to get their creamer and everything is so perfect and so organized, they use all of the super expensive hair tools, makeup, jewelry etc….and it’s so obvious that it’s all fake! There’s 20 year olds on IG and TikTok living in these beautiful very expensive apartments and homes and they have every single pair of whatever is trending and it’s not real life! What a great video!!! Definitely 💯 sharing this with my little sister! ❤️

"Morning Routine" doesn't really mean much to someone on a different circadian rhythm. I hate mornings and morning shifts. I work as a nurse and told my manager at employment to only give me afternoon or night shifts, and man nightshift is the best for me. I wake up and get kids from school, cook dinner, go to muay thai and work out, get home to shower and do facial then work my 10hr shift. Get home, second facial and sleep through day. Rinse repeat.

What you're talking about is the normalization of being rich, while income inequality is at the highest, even more so than during the gilded age. I've given up on buying high end, I have a kate spade purse that I got at a thrift store for $60, and it makes me so happy that I got it second hand, and even cheaper than other thrift/consignment stores.

I love you for being so honest and real! During pandemic, where our routines were scrolling social media everyday, I made a course called "the science of well being", I truly recommend it to every human. Trust me! I learned how the comparison makes us incredible unhappy, and today we compare ourselves not just with our neighbors, friends and family, but also with "influencers" who make us think that it's normal to live in a fairy tale without responsibilities, taxes and with enough time and money to spend in a variety of vane things. It's just not real, and you're ok to be normal.
We all need to take a break from all the lies of social media, and try to spend less time consuming that kind of trash content

I am 50 years old, and I remember what makeup used to cost..... And I am extremely disappointed and pissed off at women that has been paying like $80 for a SINGLE blush, or 30 FREAKING DOLLARS for mascara!!... they have ruined the makeup market by accepting the outrageous prices for makeup. I don't know if it's too late for people to be outraged and vote with their dollars or not. I stopped looking at social media around 2011 or so because it's completely fake and I'm so much more happy for it

There’s actually a huge business in helping social media influencers “appear” rich and successful. There are actual props people rent to influencers so they can take pictures with things….like…a fake airplane to take pics by, or fake first class passenger seats to take pics in, empty Gucci bags to rent to take pics with, etc. It’s crazy. SO MANY things are so fake online. We just have to keep in mind the MAJORITY of the people in the world are lower and middle class. The majority of us struggle to pay bills, or simply live paycheck to paycheck and our bills are paid. We lay around in the mornings with our mismatched pajamas on, or old sweatpants and T-shirts. We don’t eat fancy foods. We eat spaghetti, grilled cheeses, or cereal 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ lol

First, as a jewlery nut, Cartier and Hermes and Chanel are the easiest jewelry in the world to copy because they have no gems and can be stamped, not cut or anything else. Everything that glitters is not gold. Second, for tiny wrists, check Indian (Eastern) and Vietnamese 22-24kt gold shops. The workmanship is exquisite, the gold content is much higher, and I know there are plenty of shops in and around Austin (esp. Indian shops b/c tech engineers have sweethearts to buy for, lol). Mexican fine jewelry also runs small. I sure hope that helps! I just love your content, and you have really hit on some of my hot button issues today as well! XOXO from a fellow expat in Texas

I work 50+ hours a week between 3 jobs and raise two kids by myself who are homeschooled. If I did not have a morning routine and "sunday reset" routine, idk how I could function. I do agree though that the stuff they show on social media is very manufactured. This was a nice video reminding everyone that social media is fake and that we don't need to keep up with anyone. Even though I know it, it is good to hear other people talk about it.

I’m a morning person and I don’t have to be to the office until 8-8:15. I do have a morning routine. Wash face, make bed, put away any laundry I hung out over night (in the house, not hung outside). Makeup, getting dogs and cat fresh water in their dishes, doing something with my hair, brushing teeth, getting dressed, grabbing my packed lunch, protein shake and something caffeinated…..then heading out the door to deal with 30 ish min of lovely SLC traffic as I make my way up to the university. I’m a bit overly routined, all day. 💛🌻

I really appreciate you and other content creators who share thoughts like this and remind us of the reality that goes on around those highly curated moments. It can be all too easy to fall into the traps of comparison and want, but real life is messier and full of things that aren’t shared on the ‘gram. As I get older, I’m better at reminding myself of that but I still sometimes get FOMO because I’m human. But definitely good things to keep in mind, especially as we are in holiday season now and will be seeing a lot of content that could make us feel like we’re missing out or not doing enough.

I am disabled and don't have to work. My morning routine is literally: I get up (not at all properly clothed for a camera and with my hair a mess mind you), grumpy af, limp or zombie shuffle to the bathroom, swallow my necessary morning pills, take some ibuprofen if I hurt bad enough to need them, start the coffee, sit in front of the computer and drink that coffee, then take a shower to reduce pain. It's far from glorious.

BRILLIANT discussion, Anjelica! That’s exactly how I whittled down my list of beauty content creators. I used to follow anyone that was makeup focused - the list was long. Now I follow just 5 constantly, though I think that there are a small handful of those that are just occasional. But I don’t buy anything based on that small handful. My purchases are not based on anything but what I know will work for me. Long story short, you’re brilliant. Again, thank you!

My morning routine is simple: wash my face, some hydrating facial spray, light makeup. Done. I’m ready in about 20-25 minutes, but as I have a 6 year old daughter, my morning routine includes doing things for her too. I think 20-25 minutes is ok. I don’t have the time nor the desire to spend 2 hours doing my “morning routine” at 6 am.🙈

I will say that when I had a job or class that required me getting up early, I would make sure I had at least an hour before I had to leave to make/drink coffee, shower & dress. I usually had a long commute in & out so I used it to ease into my day & decompress before coming home. I always (tried) to pack everything I needed for my day the night before & even lay out clothes I wanted to wear just to make the morning go easier. It only took me about 10-15 mins to put makeup on or I just arrived early & did that in the bathroom at work or school. I left the house with wet hair & just let it air dry. I did not have kids so I never had that responsibility or chaos in the morning. Just had to work around my husband's use of the bathroom since back then we only had one(tiny) & lived in a one bedroom apt. Getting into a house with 2 saved our marriage lol. I highly recommed his & her bathrooms 😊
Edit: it is not at all unusual to see women doing their makeup & even sometimes their hair (removing rollers) on the train or bus when commuting, but it's really annoying when they do it in traffic while driving...but I get it. It's 30 or 40 mins of time that you have to yourself.

Wonderful video Angie! When I was young influencers weren't there and it was the movies we watched that influenced us. And we were often reminded by our parents that movies aren't reality. We need reminded that the same is true for most of the lives of influencers 🙂

It is so refreshing to see someone in the beauty world that is still so down to earth and realistic. I was noticing some people I follow for years and how they’ve changed. I’m not saying changing is bad, I’m saying that not all people would be okay to spend ridiculous amount of money with certain things because they now have money 🤷🏻‍♀️

Love this. It's so easy to get caught up in these fantasies we see on social media, so it's nice to have a reminder that we all need to chill lol. I've never been big on trends anyway, but they do tend to get me on the "must have" items of makeup or nail polish, and now I have quite a hoard of those things. I'm really trying to take a step back and ignore the FOMO, especially since I really need to get myself into a better financial situation. Thanks for this video Angie! I don't buy makeup anymore, so I'm 100% only here for your chatty videos 😊❤

I appreciate and admire that you do videos related to this topic every now and then. Sometimes we all need a reminder that they don't need to compare ourselves to social media. Sometimes I also think that a lot of the views and likes that overly perfect, luxury, "flexing" content gets come from young viewers who haven't experienced a lot of real life yet (paying bills, working, etc) and maybe don't realize how truly insane some these luxuries really are compared to necessities. A designer bag that costs as much as my mortgage payment? A bracelet stack that costs as much as my last car? Hell no. Not for me lol.

Regarding the flying always in business thing: I don't know how common this is in the US, but a lot of frequent fliers in my social circles (like my partner) get the business upgrades "for free" from carriers' loyalty programs and/or having the carrier's own credit card which racks up flight points when you use it. I'm kinda surprised you don't have anything like that since you travel so much, but I also get that this would require focusing on picking your flights from a single company, which might be easier here in Europe than in US.

I love how real you are!!! That is my goal for my channel also. Too many social media influencers create unrealistic expectations, and that’s fine but it makes people feel like they have to compete with them. It makes me feel like that for sure. Just remember that you are beautiful and perfect in your own way and everyone is different for a reason!!!!

My morning routine is up at 6am, bathroom, feed dogs, dress self, wake bf, and out the door at 7am. Pure chaos.
I get depressed when I see morning routines with like yoga, household chores (but you know, cute), the gym, Starbucks, journaling, etc.

Gosh...This video was really easy going & well said in terms of the unrealistic ideas of "normal" life routine.
I honestly like watching your videos even though, i have a brown skintone, i think you give incredibly honest review and showcase the swatches so well that i can view the colours properly enough for me to know tge products & also consider purchasing for myself.
I like when you spwak for yourself & on your preferences / experiences i can relate & it even educates me in areas i wasnt aware of before...now i know to be aware of that etc..
Thank you lots of positive vibes and love your way 💜

I get up at 6:20 to be out the door by 7:30. Most days I never make it to the makeup stage because I don't have that energy to spend in the morning. 😮‍💨 Also, most of my jewelry is costume. I don’t trust myself not to lose the expensive stuff. Learned that the hard way. 🙃

Ohhh man I wish this could seriously be a 📢 Public Service announcement 📢
Never in my 40 years of life have I ever experienced the “Keeping up with Jones’s” like I see nowadays. It’s like a damn craze. These topics are so critical for our up coming generation and well everyone to hear.
Our lives are not about just our successes and happy times and adventures. Life is about the ups and downs the rollercoaster of life the mountain to climb and we will all have failures and heartbreak and anger and sadness. No one is privy to that. Rich or poor..true happiness comes from contentment and gratitude, not material possessions. And Angie you hit these topics right on the head.
I retired my FB acct in 2015. It felt good then and still feels good now. Showing everyone we ever met so much of our lives is dangerous in general, nevermind foolish.

lol woman preach. yes I agree in regards to these really esthetically pleasing routine videos and the like. I wake up with crusties in my eyes, usually pillow lines on my face. This type of thing is why I dont do social media etc because of all the edits and "planned" moments etc.. def can make a lady feel like shes a frumpy thing when we start to compare to online photos. I have no idea how to photoshop anything. I enjoy quirky facial expressions; means you are human

I agree with you! I don’t watch lifestyle or family channels because I know it’s not realistic. In general it might be but the perfect aesthetic combined with a perfect outcome just isn’t realistic. I can also tell that they cut a ton out to get that perfect reel.
    I love beauty TH-cam and that’s it.

We need more people to talk about this! These things are so trendy, and a lot of people are also demanding them. But if everything needs to be posted on social media, you can create a picture out of everything! Like, I’d make a picture out of the meadow flowers, if a guy would get those to me. Possibly would even dry them and keep them somewhere safe, cuz it would bring memories along with them and would cost nothing to that guy money-wise! The real value of the things doesn’t really lie into worth of thousands of dollars. I’d better get these meadow flowers, but keep the memories rather than getting yet another diamond necklace for the sake of getting it. And both can be saved into a picture form. Diamond necklace, ofc, also can get the memories and different kind of value, but those things posted on social media more has a flex to it rather than some meaning to it.

BTW, I picked up the Oden's Eye Snow Dream palette (thanks for the money off!), and did my first yellow/brown look today Angie style. Love! And what easy shadows to work with. I see why you favor them.

First: sometimes I watch "morning routine" for a laugh. I inappropriately giggle at how absurd most things they do are. Come on, meditation, journaling, doing meal prep for a week??? That's ridiculous!
Second: flying first class. I watched it here on TH-cam, a man traveled that way just to see what's it like. Interestingly he barely paid for the tickets, because he knew people, websites that gave different discounts, plus it was even cheaper for him with "flying miles" from airlines. I remember that I looked at what he paid for a ticket, from things he said and it was sometimes even cheaper than business class. I aspire for this type of craftiness.😂

My own personal morning routine, even when I was having to go to work: has been me waking up before my kids, having coffee, looking at my planner, getting dressed/sometimes makeup, then waking my kids, getting them ready, breakfast for them and out the door. I will say though that there were a few years in between when my kids were under 5 that it was a lot more rushed. 😅 And not all mornings have been ideal nor are perfect.
Also, I definitely outfit repeat lol, I have a nice small collection of clothes I love.

I arrive at work at 8am and have a 15-minute commute. So, yeah, I do actually have a long morning routine. And no social media influencer "influenced" me to do that. It's just what I've done since before "a computer in every home" even existed. Not all of us live under the tyranny of social media.

I have a morning routine. Up at 6am and sit on my couch looking like a sea hag drinking my coffee and watching the sun rise. Then is a 20 minute dash I slap on some makeup, get dressed, eat peanut butter and run out the door for work. But on the weekends, I often get to FaceTime with my 1 year old grandson, so I put on nice makeup first and brush out my hair so he recognizes his GoGo.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! My morning routine when working would be a blur 😂 rushing from the shower to walk my dog, to eat something, pack my lunch and go go go 😂 I don't have time for a 10 step skin care routine, doing a yoga course and journalling. Yeah, if I get up at 3, but then I beed to make due with only 5 hours of sleep. No thank you... 😅😊

My morning routine is get up between 4a and 5a, put on workout clothes, and try not to forget deodorant. Head to the gym, then go for a walk outside. I work from home. Make my coffee, protein shake, and some breakfast. I wash my face, and brush my teeth, at some point, then shower on my break. After that it's body lotion, and face moisturizer.
When I used to work in an office, I would have to skip the walk. And, somehow be showered with eye makeup on before heading in. And, I might even have lunch packed. No idea how I used to accomplish that.
