Thomas Jouannet did an excellent job in the movie as well as Julie Delarme. Sadly, he didn't even nominate for the award. Julie Delarme won the best actress for the Saint-Tropez Fiction TV Festival. I think they both deserved for the awards.

Just speculating here, but there may have been some lingering bias in France in 2004 and other former German occupied countries against sympathetically portraying a German officer in a film about WWII. There may also have been an issue with the criteria for nomination. Julie Delarme was the central character and appeared in every scene, but Thomas Jouannet only appeared in about two-thirds of the film. Other actors nominated that year were the central character in their films, whereas the role of Werner was not the film's central character. His role was too big for a supporting actor nomination, but too small for a best actor nomination, given the stiff competition.

The male lead is a *really* good actor he plays subtly extremely well - you truly believe he is in love, shows, quietly all that is going on inside him. The scene when he looks up after finding the envelope on the floor is very well played - now he knows she has been there. You see subtle surprise mixed with hope as he begins to scan the room... what did she look at while she was here? Which if my things did she want to see....?

Yes, nice movie, in fact I looked at it twice ! However, what makes it special bothers me. I was 11 in 1940 and lived through the all four years of occupation, I knew older people, strong anti Germans, who found themselves with one or even two officers living under the same roof. As we can expect each case would be a little different. What bothers me in the fiilm is maybe what gives it its charm but it would have been hard for any host not to, at least, respond politely to his goodnights. The older man does not like his own behavior but finds the willpower to stick to it «almost to the end » which is remarkable and a high point of the fim, I will agree. Many found love in that period and too many were wrongly labeled as collaborators without proper evidence and judgment. Nice film’ Thank you.

por un beso... yo no sé
qué te diera por un beso.

I don’t think he is married as her last name was not the same as his on the back of the envelope. He may have a commitment to Greta but he finds himself in love with Jeanne. His speech about reading Jeanne’s silence, meeting her at the fishing dock, playing the Bach piece and wanting to explain the letter are his attempts to break down any barriers that keep her from returning the love he wants from her. He later said, I was the easiest person to speak to and hired me for the job. I stayed until they close the department but the only person he gave two weeks compensation was me only. One can talk from a distance I know I accidentally called out his name and later I saw him drive by my apartment looking for me? Also, another week he called out "hello" and I responded back "hello." We have similar birthdays, both left hand, dedicated to our work and family oriented. However, this is not to be since he is married and I don't want bad "karma" for either of us. I made a vow not to contact him at all. Despite him stopping by my place of employment I wouldn't go up to him. For what? It just wouldn't be an ideal situation. I care too much to form any further connection. It is enough to know someone cares that much about me.

When he discovers she was in his room and in his bed, he now knows he is not alone in his feelings. He realized she had been in his room by the letter out of place and the pillow on his bed had been disturbed. He was hoping that she would respond to him if he got her alone away from the house. He is sure that she is hiding her feelings for him. She has no choice but to walk toward him. His tall dark figure including his heavy boots is meant to show the power he holds over her but he never uses it. He immediately steps out of her way, as he wants her to come to him of her own free will. She can only glance at him, but not speak to him. The disappointment is on his face as she rides away from him.

maybe he was overwhelmed in his love for her.but strange that he,a german officer,a man of education ,sence of loyalty to his country,(they all were brainwashed),someone used to the harshness of war, should be stricken dumb in front of a slip of a girl

She was more than a slip of a girl because she maintained the household and took care of her grandfather. There was something so mature or her age and dedicated to her life teaching lessons to earn a living in this town. He was stunned by her strength of character.

I believe he wasn't accustomed to the war and was still naive how things were until his friends came to visit and explained in their language this is how it is- face facts! It was depressing to see his world fall apart at that time.

In the book it's his (ex) fiancee , whom he doesn't want to marry. Werner has some particular dislike to German girl in general, and foolishly believe French could cure it.
